I really like Pho Ketkeo. It's one of my most visited places in New Haven, and it never disappoints. I almost exclusively order the beef pho with sliced steak (B2). Broth is tasty, steak is super tender, and I love adding the chili garlic oil (halfway through, so it's almost like having two different dishes in one). It's definitely pretty spicy, so a little goes a long way. Occasionally I'll get the drunken noodles (usually with beef) and those are also very good - just the right amount of spice. I also like the pork belly stir fry, but it's not always available and I only order it for dine-in - as take-out it loses the crispiness that makes it so good. The portion sizes are solid. I think a small is the exact right amount, unless I'm starving in which case I go for medium. The Rudy split between two people plus an appetizer is also a good way to go. Quality-wise, it's definitely better to dine in, but take-out/delivery is also pretty good. They do a good job packaging everything separately for you to combine at home. Head ups for my fellow cilantro haters - the pho broth comes with cilantro unless you ask for it without. They're usually good about remembering to keep it out, even with take-out, but every once in awhile it's still there even when I ask for none. read more

Not the best Pho , but decent pho. Pho ketkeo is a Laotian restaurant that serves laotian cuisine that really reminds of viet food. The pho here is pretty good and the broth is made well. It's light but flavorful. The pho itself is tender and not over cooked with good texture. It is a pretty big bowl of pho and there is good amount of stuff in there. I got the combination bowl so it had a little bit of everything: Meatball, Sliced Steak, Tripe & Tendon. Overall a nice hearty bowl of pho. It's hard to find Lao food in CT and this place hits the spot! Great location and all my favorites on the menu: khao piek sen, laab, and naam khao. The restaurant itself sets a very traditional tone with the beautiful photos but when we visited there was some inappropriate rap music playing which made the experience a little uncomfortable. Excellent excellent excellent service, delicious food, and generous portions (and great price). I made a reservation for 25 people and the staff made sure we were all well taken care of. I want to give my thanks to Tom and Lamar who were working that night and took care of us. It isn't easy handling 25 college students with allergies and food requests, etc. They made it seem like a breeze and gave us first-class treatment. I've always loved Pho Ketkeo in the past, and I wasn't sure what all my friends would think, but they all loved it as much as I do. Thanks for the great service and the delicious dinner. Was happy to find this gem right around the block of my hotel. Upon my arrival, I was greeted and seated immediately. As I browsed through the menu, I was happy to find delicious Laotian staple jumping out at me. I settled on the sausage dinner entree, which came with sticky rice, and somtum, spicy level. My dinner came out in a jiffy and I gladly dived right now. The spices and herbs in the sausage was delicious. Dipping it in the accompanying dipping sauce elevated it up a notch. The sticky rice was a bit on the harder side, but it was good nonetheless. The somtum was good, spicy enough to my liking with all the sour, salt and umami flavors. Service was good. My water was always being re-filled and asked if my dinner was alright. I give this place two thumbs up for good, authentic Laotian cuisine. read more

I have asked them many times and they have refused. Their vegetarian pho is good and filling with fresh ingredients. I love Pho Ketkeo! Service is very attentive. The best things about Pho Ketkeo are its broth and its portion sizes. I would say even a medium is large enough to split between two people! Their biggest size is called the "Rudy," which is absolutely enormous and is definitely meant for a party of 4 or more. I would recommend ordering the classic beef pho (not the beef meatball one, the meatballs have a mushy texture and are not super flavorful). The ratio of noodle to beef slices to soup is perfect. The beef comes slightly rare so you have to "cook" it in the steaming hot broth! It is incredibly tender even when fully cooked. The noodles are standard, they advertise it as "Laotian noodles," but I can't tell the difference between their noodles and standard Vietnamese pho noodles. The broth tastes wonderful, not overly salty but incredibly rich and flavorful, just like a solid pho broth should. While the broth can absolutely hold its own, I recommend adding a squeeze of lime juice and a generous dash of sriracha and hoisin sauce. If you're feeling particularly adventurous you can even add a little fish sauce to make your dish truly pop! The pho dishes all come with a side of mung bean sprouts, jalapeño slices, and cilantro / basil. The only reason why I am docking one star is because sometimes the interior smells odd, like a really heavy meat odor, not sure how to explain it. Nonetheless, I am a big fan and will absolutely be back again. Especially now that the weather is getting chillier, there is nothing better on a crisp autumn night than a full belly of hearty soup! read more

If you haven't had duck noodle soup from here, you're missing out! The duck is roasted duck to crisp perfection and the crispness somehow maintains itself in the broth. Another pho place? Let's check it out! Actually I don't like pho haha, but I like other thai/laotian/vietnamese foods which were also on the menu. *Atmosphere Lights were way too bright. I hate eating when everything is REALLY BRIGHT. I don't like that for dinner time. When we first arrived, I thought we were going to have 7 people for dinner so it took the staff a few minutes to figure out how to appropriately rearrange the tables. Waiters yes, physicists/architects, no. Also they seemed to have on a pandora type music station, fine. But it played a bunch of Jason Derulo (okay, I admit, I like him) and other similar songs...not really appropriate for a family restaurant at 7 pm? Lighter music would have just been more apt than "Wiggle." *Staff/service I think our waitress was young/new. My friends cut her slack but I was honestly ready to injure her. She seemed to have 0 potential as a waitress - had no idea how to pronounce anything on the menu, we couldn't hear her, she wrote down the wrong things, misheard EVERYTHING, and another staff member had to come over and help her. Surprisingly, all our food came out accurately but this girl needs a LOT of practice before I'd let her wait on customers again - definitely needs training. *Food Our party ordered two appetizers - crab rangoons and crispy calamari. I didn't try the former but my friends enjoyed it (enough of a cream cheese to crab ratio) and the crispy calamari and sauce were good. For dinner, I initially thought I might get pineapple fried rice but decided I wanted something heartier. I went with Pad Cha Talay - seafood and veggies in oil/basil/sauce. The flavors were good and I actually really enjoyed the mussels (sometimes I find them too fishy or unappealing) but these were tasty. It came with rice (white or brown, I chose white) but I actually would've wished for a slightly larger serving. I ended up stealing some of my fiance's green curry which was also good (and had eggplant yessss). The others in our party also all enjoyed their dishes, too. Overall, I was highly unimpressed with the staff, but the food was pretty good and my friends had no complaints. A nice clean Southeast Asian place across the street from the cinema. I can't complain. The service was quick and friendly, the food is pretty decent for what it is. I've never had Laotian food, so I ordered the pho (it is Laotian pho) for $9.95 for a nice sizeable bowl with meatballs, tripe and beef strips. The broth is a little bit different from the Vietnamese pho broth. I enjoyed it quite a lot. Take note of the chili oil that says 'spicy...seriously' btw. I eat a lot of spicy food (I'm one of those people that says 'extra chili' on everything) and it was SPICY. My friend and I also split the banh xeo ($9.95), which is a Laotian crepe with meat inside. It reminded me of a Thai omelette, except in pancake form. My friend had the basil stir fry, which she described as very 'nondescript' and 'standard', which I think is fair. If we had stopped at the appetizers, this review would've been 4-stars. A few observations off the bat - Pho Ketkeo, while I like the concept (Laotian/Thai, although I wasn't sure what the Laotian fare was, most of the menu seemed to be Vietnamese/Thai), the restaurant itself is in an unfortunate location in downtown New Haven next to the hospital, across from Criterion, and underneath/next to a parking garage. In my 8+ years in New Haven, I've seen a carousel of restaurants circle through this spot (last was Kudeta, perhaps? Or a vegan/vegetarian place?), so I hope Pho Ketkeo doesn't fall to a similar fate. I can imagine it could pull a good lunch crowd from Yale/NH hospital, and they do deliver on GrubHub, which will be key when the weather turns nasty cold. We started with the crab rangoon (see my pic) and the banh xeo, both of which were excellent. For the banh xeo, you have the option of choosing lean pork or the pork belly - go for the belly! It was hot and crispy, super flavorful, and melded well with their peanut dipping sauce. After spending time falling in love with Hanoi street food like banh xeo, I was happy to be momentarily transplanted back with Pho Ketkeo's version. Everything else, unfortunately, went down from there. We ordered the massaman curry and the pad see ew (both Thai dishes). The pad see ew was unfortunately entirely too sweet. The brown sauce normally drizzled on a pad see ew is salty, and this sauce was sweet and underwhelming. The massaman was too thin, watery, and lacked flavor. It's too bad because, as I've said in multiple reviews of Asian restaurants in New Haven, we desperately need better Asian food here! I'm not sure Pho Ketkeo hits the spot. I'd be interested in going back and trying their pho, especially know that they deliver. You can get 10% off on grubhub if you stop by the restaurant and pick up a card. read more

I've been here a handful of times and it is a good reliable pho place in New Haven. The pho is not as good as what I get in San Diego--which has probably the best pho in the US so it's not really a surprise--but they certainly come close. The broth and noodles are good but the beef slices, tendon, and tripe lack the classic textures. Despite this, just about everything else on the menu is fantastic. I had take out from Pho Ketkeo twice in one week and was pretty disappointed about how the quality of food can change from a day to day basis. The first time I ordered take out from here I got two orders of drunken noodles(one with beef and the other with duck) and then two orders of Thai iced coffee. The first time the food was pretty good. I am normally hesitant about ordering food non-Vietnamese food at a Pho restaurant, but I enjoyed it and the coffee was pretty solid. The second time I ordered from here I got it delivered. I got the drunken noodle with beef, two Thai iced coffee, calamari, sticky rice, and the deep fried fish. The calamari tasted like it was covered with funnel cake batter and it was very strange. The Thai iced coffee was really disappointing. It was watered down and there was sediment on the bottom of the coffee. It looked as if they made the coffee from an instant mix that has been sitting there all day. So when someone orders it, they just pour it out from a batch that is already pre-made and put ice in it. It was so disappointing that my friend and I couldn't even finish it. The fried fish wasn't bad, the sauce was a sweet chili sauce maybe and still the fish was still pretty crispy. However, they forgot to give us rice and that was odd. I wasn't sure if it was because they saw that we ordered sticky rice or it just didn't come with rice, which would have been really weird. The drunken noodles still tasted the same so that was good. I'm very hesitant about ordering from this place again or even going there to eat if the quality of food is so inconsistent. read more

Last night was the first time trying Pho Ketcho. We were staying at a hotel just a stone's throw away. We ordered our food to go and picked up our order at the restaurant. The restaurant is small but certainly not cramped or crowded and it is appealingly and colorfully decorated. It was clean and inviting and the staff was very friendly and pleasant. We took away crispy fried chicken wings, pork spring rolls,Ginger stir fry with duck (standard choices are with chicken, pork, beef, tofu or vegetable) served with brown rice and Laotian sausage served with sticky rice. The crispy chicken wings were great. Yummy. The spring rolls were o.k., but seemed to lack adequate filling and distinctive flavor. Ginger stir fry with duck was filled with an array of fresh vegetables and duck was succulent. The flavor of the whole dish was fresh and balanced and most delicious! My friend, who ordered the Laotian sausage thought it tasted spicy (I did not try it myself) and unfortunately he is not a fan of spicy. The sticky rice was perfect. I plan to return soon to eat in the restaurant as there are several other dishes I would like to try. Summer rolls - served in a very interesting style where they're precut into bite sized pieces and laid flat. Lots of veggies in the rolls, very fresh and tasty. Fried chicken - nicely fried, and I'm not sure how it's seasoned but it tasted just like the fried chicken I got off the street in bangkok - which is to say delicious Ban Xeo - not as crispy as I would have liked and fairly soft over all. The coconutty/peanut sauce was very interesting Pho - not the best pho I've had but solid. Very clean beefy flavor, just not the most concentrated pho broth. The pho here is decent! Comes with the traditional bean sprouts and Thai basil, has flavorful broth, and is reasonably priced, but unfortunately, I was not impressed with the quality of the beef or the consistency of the noodles. I actually prefer the pho at Mecha Noodle Bar, even though it's more expensive there. All in all though, this place was good for New Haven and satisfies a cheaper craving for pho! This place serves more than just pho though - they have several other types of Thai or Laotian dishes, so maybe next time I will try one of those instead. The restaurant actually strikes me more as Thai/Laotian than it does Vietnamese, so perhaps one of those other dishes would be better! Also, despite there not being much business when I was there for lunch, the service was a bit slow. This restaurant does not do false advertisement and it is truly an authentic Laotian and Thai experience. We went for dinner on Saturday and was happy about the dinning experience. Both servers were very nice and friendly. My hubby had the pork larb as the appetizer and it came out quite nicely. It was generously seasoned and infused with chili and even came with pork skin to add extra authenticity. The dish also came with a side of steamed sticky rice. I had a medium size meatball pho and my hubby had a traditional pho tai (with rare sliced steak). I was wowed when the noodle soup came out. It was so big! more like a large bowl from other restaurants. And where on earth would people complaint about the portion!!? The generous amount of broth was filled almost up to the edge of the bowl. The broth was tasty and flavorful. The garnishes were fresh and the homemade chili oil is a killer. Honestly after my disappointment over another southeast Asian restaurant, I did not have high hopes and thought it was just another "panda express". But this restaurant proved me wrong. It is convenient located on the opposite side of the Bow Tie cinema. I finally took the time to try this place. I'm usually a noodle gal but I decided to try something different. I ordered the three crispy duck which was enough to split between my boyfriend and I. The Pho scene in New Haven is decidedly weak. I've had Pho Thai, Mecha,The Pho scene in New Haven is decidedly weak. I've had Pho Thai, Mecha, and Duc's, and now with Ketkeo the collection is complete. And while New Haven doesn't have a proper boiling-beef-bone-overnight Pho place, Ketkeo is the best of what we do have. Located in the "cursed" location in the concrete and brutalist behemoth near the Omni, it was quiet when I had my lunch there, but the service was outstanding, with a waiter and assistant keeping track of me indulging the Ruby sized (massive sized) Pho Tai. It's a pricey bowl of Pho at $14, but the broth is the best in the city. It also comes with an incredible portion of noodles, which expands as it soaks in the blessed, beef infused ambrosia. The beef itself is mediocre, coming out cooked (it should be semi-raw on appearance at the table) though they do have a brisket option on the winter menu which I haven't seen on any New Haven menus before. The meatballs are better, with a good spring and bounce and flavor, and better accompany the rest of the meal, which is solid, if not excellent. read more

I like that they have a small bowl, and it's a good sized bowl. The summer roll is very disappointing. The choice of vegetables is odd... like some kind of millennial choice, and the ratio of protein to vegetables was not good either. How do you have a summer roll with no bean sprouts?!
