I don't think that's for everyone, but I loved swishing the meat in the broth until it's just slightly cooked, similar to hot pot. The broth was rich and delicious, enough for me to drink it all. The prices are reasonable, and the space is small but bright and charming. The servers are pleasant and clearly take pride in what they do; they're very eager for you to pack up the broth and take it home if you can't finish it. The food is generally good, take out is ALWAYS a problem. The Vegetarian Pho is tasty but comes loaded with ginger sticks that blend in with the noodles and it's awful. I ask for the ginger on the side. The last 3 times the take out order was wrong, even when I check the bag I can't always tell what's missing until containers are opened. Last night, after a 12 hour flight, I took the order home and they forgot to put the PHO BROTH!! in the bag and the ginger was on the side BUT ALSO loaded into the soup. Bill integrity issues 1. Foods were okay okay, nothing spectacular 2. However, the initial bill has the following fine prints: 18% service charge is included for dine-in parties of 1-5ppl & 20% for parties of 6+. The service charge goes 100% to the staff which I don't mind at all 3. Unfortunately, when the final bill came, additional 'add tip' lines for 10, 15, 20% more tip or others were added. When service change is already included, these add tip lines should be removed, unless it's an exceptional service such as with high-end establishments and the server stayed silence in hoping of me not noticing the add-on service charge. 4. The pho has been consistently high quality in the sense that the noodles have never arrived stuck together and the broth has always tasted perfect. The rare beef pho also comes with the beef properly sliced in a separate dish so you can _keep_ the beef rare, unlike some other joints that just throw the beef in with the broth, which causes them to cook to well done. It's a little overpriced but I think they make up for it in the quantity and quality of food. Definitely some of the best Pho I've tried. This paragraph is for the picky eaters that don't like fat....by the way....I'm one of them. EAT THE FAT in the brisket. It isn't chewy, or tough, or makes you feel like you are eating fat. Eat the fat! You don't even notice you are eating it. It adds to the meal. Definitely recommend to people, like myself, that scrape or pick the fat off their meat. I'm going to go on with some negatives. This review would be a 5 out of 5 if it wasn't for this. The kitchen, the food, was amazing! The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is because they gave us the bill 10 minutes after we got our meal. Mind you the restaurant was closing at 10PM. (They gave us the bill at 9PM sharp). They never asked if we wanted the bill. They never asked if we wanted dessert... (We did). We would have ordered the mango sticky rice. If the server asked if we wanted the bill, I would have said yes, but would have definitely asked for dessert. Also if you can help yourself...don't use the bathroom. Kind of yikes when it comes to cleanliness. The lack of cleanliness is almost to be expected since it's in the Venice area. The toilet could use a scrub. PHO MDR I am in LOVE with your food and vibe! To be honest I had a terrible online order experience when PHO MDR had initially opened, but we decided to give it another in person chance, and boy oh boy are we happy we did! Nestled right off of Washington Blvd, Pho MDR is hard to miss! A bright blue building, with large signs outside. Plenty of street parking, though, evenings can be a bit tough but trust and believe the foods worth it. We loved the decor inside and the service was impeccable! We had a great conversation with Sunny who talked about the fusion of both Vietnamese and Thai cuisine at the restaurant, and made honest and lovely suggestions for our next visit. We ordered our usual, Pho Steak (cooked), and Thai Basil fried rice. BOTH DELICIOUS were 5 stars! The chicken was juicy and flavorful, as was the rice and veggies! Well prepared Thai food is hard to find and I'm so glad we found it here! The Pho was yummy and light. The broth was not over bearing or too salty. Which was a nice welcome, and the steak was a much much MUCH better quality than other Pho shops. The portion of the Pho was substantially smaller than it's competitors but worth it. We will definitely be back! One note to add- the restaurant charges an 18% service charge on all orders for tips. This is pre added to every check. Although we didn't mind paying the gratuity, I do think this would be a nice note to make for those who may not want to pay such a gratuity for whatever the reason. -1 star for not giving this option, or a lower gratuity percentage for those that find the 18% too high, or simply cannot afford it. Is this the best bowl of pho on the westside? Why, yes, I think it might be. Can it compete with the better known pho places east of the 405? Yes, yes it really can. Pho MDR has great pho, friendly service, and a nice atmosphere. I've eaten there a handful of times, and have also gotten takeout. I usually order the rare steak, but I tried the brisket the other day and it was fantastic. (pho-ntastic? is that too much?) The brisket was soft and flavorful and the fat melted in my mouth - no exaggeration, and no chewing necessary, it really just melted in the most delicious way. The broth has a nice depth of flavor, and the noodles have good texture. If you're in the market for a big, delicious bowl of soup, Pho MDR is a great option. At some point I need to try their non-pho offerings. For right now, the five stars is for the soup, the pleasant place to eat the soup, and the friendly service. read more

If you're looking for a quick pho fix in west LA, Pho MDR definitely hits the spot with their large generous portions, as well as their extensive menu selection of Vietnamese and Thai dishes. Unfortunately, as someone who grew up in San Jose, this was not a PHO-nomenal experience for me, but as a student, I appreciate the huge portions and fresh quality of their menu offerings. Seafood pho: they only have one size for their pho noodle soups, and these are definitely huge, with a generous portion of broth (although this has a pretty heavy taste of ginger + is very diluted ). If you have a big appetite, I would definitely recommend adding extra fresh rice noodles (but the regular portion is just fine for me). Their seafood pho didn't have quite a few of the ingredients advertised online (namely their snow crab claws), but it had a good portion of shrimp, calamari, and fish. The basil, jalapeños, bean sprouts, and lemons are also really clean and fresh, which is a good indicator of their kitchen cleanliness. Coconut shrimp: I was definitely impressed with the size of the shrimp and how they were fried to tender perfection, but it did have a pretty heavy taste of artificial coconut, which I'm not a fan of. Service was also a bit slow, and it looked like there was only one one waitress who was handling ~10 tables and delivery orders. My go to Pho spot! Sometimes you just need a nice soothing hot bowl of pho. This place does everything right. They give Lots of broth - at other pho locations I always feel I need to ask for extra. The bowl is so big my boyfriend and I share one bowl (adding a little extra beef) every time and are always full after. The rare steak comes out so perfect and adds lots of flavor. The serving size is just right: good amount of broth, green onion and cilantro, noodles and meats. (I asked to have my beef slices on the side because I don't like it fully cooked.)The large bowl of pho came with a side dish of fresh basil, bean sprouts, wedges of lime and jalapeño pepper. Service was excellent! The waitress was professional, friendly and attentive. The restaurant was clean. The co-owner and chef was super nice and gave us a short history of how Pho MDR came about. Located on Washington Blvd a few blocks down from Costco. Pho MDR has the best pho in the area. The prices are slightly higher, but the size and quality is much greater. There are many other noodle, fried rice, stir fry and Bahn Mi options. I prefer their Thai and Vietnamese dishes above the rest. This last visit I ordered the seafood pho which was delicious. Shrimp, calamari, fish, snow crab claw. Rice noodle topped with green onion, cilantro and fried onion. Served with a side of bean sprouts, basil, jalapeno, fried onion, hoisin, siracha sauce and lime. (I do not believe I was given the snow crab but that's ok) I also ordered chicken fried rice which one of the better versions I've tried in a while. Both servings were extremely large. I highly recommend the fresh Thai Tea. I always ask for light ice because it goes way too fast with 75% of the cup being cubes. The restaurant is a casual setting.
