What a gem Pho Ny is. Obviously there are unlimited pho options in San Jose, and my gf and I wanted to try something new. We have our go-to's but wanted to expand. We saw Pho Ny had a solid rating, and it was close by so here we go.. It's a small family own restaurant, few tables inside. There's a good selection of dishes, pho, porridge, stews etc. I went with the oxtail pho, I wanted to try something new. I usually always get the pho dac biet, combination. My dish came out piping hot, big plus! It shocks me every time when pho doesn't come out steaming hot. The soup was amazing, the flavors really took me away and it was delicious. The broth makes all the difference in the world. I had the regular pho noodles. There was 2 big pieces of ox tail, very tender and soft. It was an amazing bowl of pho tbh. No complaints at all. My GF had the beef stew and she loved it. I tried it and the flavors were amazing. Beef was tender and juicy. We both really enjoyed our food and can't wait to come back to try something else. First time here since my family has been raving about this place! This place is small and you can tell it's a hole in the wall. Service was super friendly! My cousin and I got the pho tai bo vien (pho with the steak and meatballs). I got the same, but asked for my steak to be rare on the side since I don't like it fully cooked inside the broth. The broth itself was delicious, it didn't need additional sauces like sriracha or hoisin sauce inside. I ate the pho without having to add anything inside besides the veggies that came on the side because that's how good the broth was. Once you sip the soup, it tasted homemade giving you a warning and homely feeling as if you were eating it at home. I look forward to coming here during winter because I know it's going to hit. Wrote our name down on a Sunday brunch time and got seated within maybe 10 minutes. Parking lot is really busy but we found parking quickly. The indoor seating is a bit smaller so isn't the best place for groups. There were a handful of tables outside too. First time trying the egg yolk condensed milk soda out of curiosity and personally I wouldn't order it again but it was fun to try something unique! Ordered the beef pho with tendon, rare steak and beef balls. The rare steak came in rather small pieces but the tendon was plump and juicy! They offer both regular noodle and fresh noodles! I found the extra vegetable toppings were very fresh. Overall the pho was nice, not the most amazing I've had but it definitely tasted fresh and clean! My friend ordered the beef stew and said it wasn't as good as previous times and tasted a bit watered down so maybe we came on an off day. Otherwise he says it's normally very good and comes often. Overall I would return and I like how the pho you can select 1-3 meat choices giving a nice form of customization. It's a very small hole in the wall without much space, but man, they serve consistently delicious, clean-tasting broth with high-quality toppings. It was my first time here, small spot in the corner. I lived in the area my whole life and never knew it was here. We had a party of 7 and most of us got pho. One of us got the bo kho. We also wanted to try the chao long, but they ran out. The pho broth was okay, a little bland for my liking. The broth is a little more fatty than others, but I didn't mind. The star of their pho is the noodles. I don't know what noodles they use, but it's sooooo good and chewy. I'd honestly come back just to buy the raw noodles here to use at home. The bo kho was on the bland/watery side for me too and the beef was not tender. Service here was great until I went to pay. I paid with my card and the credit card terminal/screen was on the cashier's side of the counter, so she had to slide, choose tip, and complete it. She asked us how much tip and I said clearly said 10% because other people nearby heard it as well, but she pressed 20%. I ordered the Pho Ga Dai with fresh noodles which came with pieces of chicken on the bone in their savory chicken broth. We both agreed our noodles were really good. The owner spent time chatting with us when we were done eating and shared that the recipe for their pho broth(s) have been in the family for generations. I love authentic recipes that have been perfected over the years and could tell that he and his family pours a lot of TLC into their cooking. Yum yum yum!! This spot might be my new favorite pho spot, and I feel like I've tried a lot of pho LOL The broth was really the standout for me, so flavorful and rich and warming. It hit the spot so right, and the noodles were the perfect texture too. I loved dipping the meat in the chili sauce they had, it was the perfect level of spice for me. Bean sprouts also came out blanched and steaming! I'd never seen that before, but it really added to the experience and I didn't get any random raw bean sprouts in my noodles. After searching numerous options on Yelp, we finally decided on Pho Nhy solely due to their offering of ox tail on the menu. Now prior to eating here, my only experience with Ox Tail Pho was in Southern California, more specially Los Angeles County and Orange County. I recall Pho 79 of Garden Grove providing us with HUGE QUANTITIES of side orders of ox tail for the fraction of the price Pho Ny charged. Since they charge $5 for the side of ox tail, I expected huge quantities. However, to my surprise.... I had a plastic container on the side with a piece of ox tail bone.... topped off with some scallions on top. Looks nice in photos but.... where's the meat??? I understand we're in the middle of a pandemic and restaurant owners don't have it easy but.... really??? Service was good. Indoor dining felt COVID-safe. The pho itself was decent. During the weekends and only on the weekends, Pho Nhy serves up piping hot bowls of chao long. Porridge, innards, fried shallots and green onions to top. Add some sprouts, throw in some jalapeños and toss some Chinese donuts on top and you're set. This play is hands-down has the best Vietnamese beef stew that I try so far! They're pretty on point with flavor texture and they also give a decent amount! I give it five stars because it's literally the only beef stew that I've tried in the face that is pretty I'm fine at least to my palate! Wanted pho so yelped for places I haven't tried and came across Pho Nhy. I called in and placed my order just a couple minutes before 4pm and they said it will be ready in 15mins. I picked up my order 20 mins later at 4:20pm. When I got to my car I opened the bag to check if it was the correct order.. it was, but the soup was room temperature and the platter was barely warm. Fine, I knew I had to heat it up anyways since I wouldn't be eating dinner until after 6pm. Dinner comes, I boiled the soup and added in the clear noodles, chicken, and veggies. Nothing special, the broth and chicken were mediocre - I've had better. I remembered used to go here while in high school since 1998.. they used to be Pho Nam Tien.. Here I am coming back since so many years and I was surprised. The place is more cleaner more brighter .. If the broth is good everything else just falls into place and I find this to be so true for Pho Nhy. Even though a few times it wasn't point, I know they care about their craft so I'm always going to support this small business. I've become acquainted with the owners and they're such nice people. Ok but back to the food! Pho -- you can either snag the special (Dac Biet) or choose your own 3 meats for a customized bowl. The Dac Biet comes with all meats standard for pho: brisket, tendon, thinly sliced round eye, etc., AND OXTAIL. Does anyone know of another place that includes oxtail in their dac biet?? Ok maybe some that I don't know of, but still. Uncommon at a lot of places without an additional charge so I'm not complaining about gettin sum at Pho Nhy!! Pick and choose bowls are straight forward, menu has a list of meats for you to consider. *You can order more oxtail on the side. *Sizes come in a regular or large. *Noodle options come in traditional (the ones from the market that you have to cook) and fresh thick noodles. I highly recommend the latter, it's such a game changer. VALUE // Prices have not gone up here for a while which I'm shocked considering the state of our food supply chain, especially beef. For the current prices and even if it went up a bit, still a great value in my opinion. Freaking large at Pho Y is a regular size here. Plus good broth. PARKING // The lot towards the restaurant is a little cramped but I haven't had trouble finding something nearby. Don't park close to the dumpster in the back. Easy in, hard to get out. TAKEAWAY // I'm really particular and snobby when it comes to Pho, for ME I do care about quality of broth and all else that entails. For others it might not matter since broth isn't a priority and they prefer to add a lot of of hoisin and sriracha and that's ok. The good: There are tons of pho spots in San Jose so it's tough to stand out with all of the competition. This place is a favorite amongst my mom's friends. The broth here is nice and fragrant. It has citrusy notes. They give plenty of meat and the meat is tender. I like the banh pho tuoi (fresh wide pho noodles). The bad: The parking lot gets crowded. I always prefer a rare beef and beef ball pho but many places charge extra $2 for the beef ball so I never get it. So if you want to pick your fav ingredients (tendon and flank or tendon and brisket, or beef ball and tendon) this is the place! *Weekends - they have chao long - vietnamese porridge. They made the best beef stew soup dish I've ever had with tendons instead of beef. The broth was different from other stew dishes I've had and I think theirs is better than other pho places.
