I've been to the OG location and now their newer location in North East Austin. They get busy at lunch so it's best to come here before 11:30 on the weekday. They really work hard to get people in the restaurant and if you are dining solo they can probably fit you in a table with others - if they are packed. The pho here is just good. The broth has a nice balance and you can even add a shot of the fatty oil from the beef! The noodles are fresh and the herbs too. I normally get the Dac Biet with a little bit of everything - the meats are just better quality and don't taste like they've been sitting around too long. Price point is average for a pho house and considering the quality it's probably a deal too. Also you get a bottle of water too! There's a boba shop next door to satisfy your sweet tooth here. Our party of three arrived on a Sunday at 1:50pm (they close at 2:30pm) and we had a 15 minute wait. The place was packed - always a good sign. We were seated after 15 minutes and the server came over right away. We knew what we wanted. No time to waste, let's eat! We order the phô combo, the phô with flank and eye of the round, and spring rolls. We also ordered a tofu pudding and iced Vietnamese coffee, both excellent. The pudding is smooth and creamy. It was delivered straightaway. We all had a bit before our meal. The phô broth was remarkably flavorful. We used to live on the West Coast and you could get really good phô everywhere. I never had broth that flavorful. The meat was very good as well. I read some reviews complaining about the pricing. I'm not sure how much these folks expect to pay for a meal lately, but $14.50 for a large bowl of phô with a ton of meat seems reasonable to me. This place was great. You should try it out. We feel bad leaving this review because we came here with friends who are Vietnamese and they were extolling the merits of this place, so obviously we wanted to love it. We had about a 15 minute wait, which wasn't too bad, especially considering how packed the place continuously is. Service is very friendly, and we appreciated that they did not rush us as we lingered to chat a bit longer with our friends. Our daughter got a bowl of their chicken pho, which she was happy with, and we always appreciate when there is a kid's-size version. One of us got the veggie pho with beef broth, and it was...OK. Not bad, not great, just...average. Pho is all about the broth and this one was slightly underseasoned and pretty muted (couldn't taste much of the spices/beef flavor). The veggies were the usual cut-up stuff that you get like carrots and broccoli. One of us ordered the fried rice with everything that he can only describe as "horrible," consisting of unfrozen Sysco items. Ah well! It's not like we would discourage folks from coming here, but we're just a bit confused as to what they hype is since Pho Phong Luu seemed pretty similar to the other pho places in the Research Boulevard area. Hands down the best pho I've had in Austin. The broth is so flavorful and not too oily, the meat is tender, and the portions are generous! I always get the build your own with some combo of fatty brisket, steak, meatballs, and brisket. I will say the drinks are very sweet, so I don't usually get them. The eggrolls are good but nothing to phone home about. The pho is definitely the star of the show! This is a pretty authentic pho spot, meaning that 95% of the people are Asian- so you know it's going to be good. There was a bit of a wait when we arrived on a Sunday around lunchtime, but once we got seated, the service was quick. We ordered an order of the shrimp and grilled pork spring rolls to start. The shrimp spring rolls were your typical spring rolls, but the grilled pork was not what I was expecting as it was a pork patty. I ordered the combo pho, and it did not disappoint. It's legit! -from a Vietnamese born and raised in Vietnam I think this is the closest bowl of Pho that taste like home in Austin. Huge bowl with tender beef and tendon. Meatballs are quite good as well. Plenty of meat with enough noodles. I love that the broth is clear and not too strong in spices! It is VERY crowded. For good reasons. So make sure you come right when they open. They have weird opening hours as well, so double check before you head out. They will write your name down and call out when the table is ready. HOWEVER, if you stand outside, you won't be able to hear it and they won't come looking for you, so stand inside and wait. Quick service and very straightforward. It's a place where you come, eat your good food and leave. Don't expect to be asked 'Is everything okay?' In a desperate bid to find a pho restaurant that compares to ramen (one of us prefers pho to ramen, the other thinks that's blasphemy), we came across Pho Phong Luu, a Vietnamese restaurant serving up hefty portions in an otherwise shrinkflation based economy. One of the first things that stands out is that the restaurant is clean and compared to a lot of other pho places nearby it feels far better run and cared for. We were seated quick, ordered just as fast, and served even faster. The restaurant also offers boba to be delivered from the next door shop right to your table which was pretty cool. The menu offers a diverse group of meats for the pho alongside bahn mi sandwiches and spring rolls. One thing we will note is that the prices here are waaaaaaay higher than any other places we've seen in Austin, even higher than some we've seen in California. We understand small businesses need to charge a bit more sometimes due to overhead but this was just too much for the food they're offering. We ordered the brisket pho, eye round steak, brisket, and meatball pho, and the pork and shrimp egg rolls. We'll break the pho down a bit more since it has a few layers: the meat was great, especially the brisket. The pho broth was way too sweet and honestly lacked a good amount of the flavor you would expect it to have. The noodles were very good, best part of it alongside the brisket. We were a bit disappointed as a lot of people said this was the best pho in Austin but to us this was just very average pho you could find anywhere. As for the egg rolls, they were okay. The pork and shrimp mix was a bit bland but the wrapping of the egg roll itself was a perfect and crunchy golden brown. Overall, our experience at Pho Phong was nothing special or different from other pho we've had around. I don't want to dismay anyone from coming in and trying the restaurant, as we believe you really do have to taste something yourself to have perspective, but we don't recommend Pho Phong Lou due to its high price point and what we felt was average food. Very crowded for a Saturday... so it tells me that it's a popular place. They have a ton of tables and small groups share large tables to ensure that a party of 2 are not taking up the entire table meant for 6. I came here with my dad and boyfriend and the food is good. Service is quick to ensure table turnover which is good. I don't think we waited longer than 10 minutes because we finished and paid for our meal within 1 hour, if not 45 minutes. I would agree that this place for Austin is good. Not many pho restaurants make it as good in Austin anymore. Definitely coming back and bringing friends or keeping it small is the plan! 5 stars! My boyfriend and I had this spot on our list for a while, and now that we've finally tried it, I only regret not coming sooner. We came in around lunchtime on a Saturday, and even though it was busy, we were seated, greeted, and had our orders taken almost immediately, we both thought it was super efficient service. We usually stick to our go-to orders: I always get the beef brisket pho, and my boyfriend gets the combo pho. Both bowls were absolutely delicious. The broth was rich, slightly sweet, and full of flavor and I really appreciated that the menu specifically said "no MSG". It still delivered on taste without that heavy, sleepy feeling afterward. Because of this, I have a feeling Pho Phong Luu will be our new pho place. The portion sizes were also more generous than we expected, plenty of meat, plenty of noodles, and just overall satisfying. We also shared an order of fried rice, and not a grain was left behind. Everything was well-cooked and perfectly seasoned. The restaurant itself is modern, clean, and clearly well-managed. There were multiple staff members working hard to make sure everyone had a great experience, and it showed. One unique thing is that instead of the staff giving you water, or glasses and a pitcher of water, you are given 1 bottled water per person. The best pho in Austin so far! The portion is huge, has a decent amount of meat, and good noodles:broth:meat ratio. Each bowl has one size and it's $15 - $15.50 (as of 7/7/2024). I love that there's an option to choose your own meats (up to 3 choices) because there're certain types of meat that I don't generally like. The meat is thinly sliced. The meatballs really stand out compared to other places. The broth is very flavorful, you don't need to add anything else to it except a squeeze of lime. Please do not add hoisin sauce or sriracha to the broth because it will lose the original flavor. If you want to have some hoisin sauce and chili sauce, ask for a small dipping bowl, so you can dip the meat in it separately. If you would like some heat in your broth, add jalapeño slices. Water: Each person gets a water bottle for free. Additional water will be charged. I'd recommend them install a filter system for water instead of giving out water bottles as not many people are mindful of recycling them. This place is super crowded, so if you come in and don't have a table yet, put your name and number of people in your party on their sheet at the front. Wait inside or outside of the restaurant but pay attention to it when they call names. They only call once inside and once outside. If you don't pay attention and miss it when they call, they will scratch your name out and you will need to add to it again. Staff is super fast and efficient! They move with a purpose! Make sure you read the menu that you order everything in the beginning including some additional asks like more limes, more basil/beans sprouts, etc. Some additional items are charged $1. If you want something extra, ask if there's a charge and ask for all as you put in your order. What comes with pho is usually enough. Staff will come to take payment as soon as they notice everyone is finished, so they can have available tables for others. This is a place where you finish eating and then sit and chill and chit chat. I've heard that the owner moved here from Vietnam not so long ago, so the taste is super close to the pho you would get in Vietnam. Business hours: a little odd. They're closed on Wednesday and Thursday. Some days they're open for lunch only, some days they're open for both lunch and dinner with a break in between. I just saw a sign inside today that they'll be closed from 7/15 - 8/8. Always check Google for their business hours before coming. Being from the Bay Area I've had the privilege and have been spoiled by how many phonominal Pho restaurants. There's so many places that all you can do is just listen and respect others reasoning for their favorite spot. Coming to Austin eating pho was the last thing I ever imagined to be eating here, BUT my hesitation was squashed. It's a little confusing eating here being that you are instructed to stand in a line, order from the front counter, and then go find yourself a seat in their busy and packed seating areas. We got there right before rush hour and once we had ordered and sat down the line went out the door. They actually bring your order to you once you've ordered and the staff is always on their feet rushing around. Tables are all really close together with condiments napkins and utensils (sometimes) if not, all you have to do is just ask or go up to their utensils and napkins stand. The broth was good here but they also have these amazing cuts of meet that give that great aroma of the fat from the meet that gets cooked down by the hot broth, I like how they put tons of green onions (the more the merrier). Ordering the Cafe Su Da which was served with the phin dropper that melts into the condensed milk for that sweet and strong flavor that we all love from Vietnamese coffee. This is always been our go-to place for bahn me sandwiches. However, this trip was a little bit different. I've gotten very used to the taste of this particular sandwich, the special sandwich, but this time the taste was off.
