Came for the bahn mi. It met our expectations. Tried both the pork and the lemongrass beef versions. The bread was very good but did not hit baguette perfection as some do. We liked the beef but preferred the pork. Neither of them seemed to have any pate, though. I mean... we looked, but didn't find any. Still... the sandwiches were flavorful. Some fellow diners were enjoying the pho, but most seemed to be here for the noodles. You order and pay at the counter and they bring it to you. They had tipo chico, beer, Vietnamese coffee and other beverage options. They had a little condiment bar with jalapeño, onion and cilantro. More of a lunch place than dinner, for my taste. Do not recommend!! We were in Austin downtown and was looking for some viet food. This place got decent reviews and it turned out to be quite misleading. Service was excellent and the place was really bright and clean. I liked this place for that. Food: beyond bland. There was no flavors. We got 1 bun Bo hue- spicy beef; one pho, one vegan pho. I flew into Austin for a mini trip to see some friends and was really craving some Vietnamese food. Our friends recommended eating at this restaurant because of its higher ratings. Honestly, I was pretty blown away at the portion sizes. I live in New York, so getting a place bigger than the size of my head was outside of my expectations. I think this a solid Vietnamese restaurant. I think the flavor isn't as strong as traditional Vietnamese cuisine, but this wouldn't deter me from recommending this place! Pho Please is pho sure not my favorite pho place in Austin. I really only go here since its the closest/most convenient Pho spot near my house and gets the job done when I'm in a pinch. Its a hipster vibe pho spot, they wear denim aprons and take your order at the counter and then assign you a table to sit at. Their pho only comes in one bowl size (no small or large option), usually its a good size bowl for the price. However, I think it is really hit or miss on how much meat they give you in the bowl. Sometimes they really do skimp on the meat, then sometimes its a substantial amount. The broth to me is meh, nothing special. They ask if you want cilantro, onions in your pho...even if you say yes they literally give you a very small sprinkle of each so I always have to go to the self serving bar and get a lot more onions and cilantro to add to the bowl. Their bean sprout and basil plate is also sad looking, i feel like they just skimp on a lot of sides/additives to the bowl. read more

Meeting my kiddo for lunch, we were going to Mod Pizza, but after an employee was incredibly rude to me I decided to spend my money elsewhere. Honestly, I should thank that rude guy for us discovering this little gem. The atmosphere is not amazingly impressive... but the big poster-size menu on the wall on line to the ordering counter was helpful. I'm not a Vietnamese food aficionado so the Images next to the items really helped... and the end product ended up looking JUST LIKE the photo. Taste... I had the Vermicelli & Pork and it was delicious. The only drawback for me was the egg had a really oily taste to it. Everything else was wonderful. My kiddo had a Bahn Mi and it tasted really really fresh and veggie-forward. We also ordered egg rolls (3) and at the end of lunch we both had enough left over that we had another meal each. I came here with my friends to grab lunch after going to Barton Springs pool and the food revitalized us. Overall 3.8/5 stars. Girlfriend and I ate here after a flight from NY and the value on this was ridiculous. Massive portions - we got two grilled pork vermicelli bowls, pork belly baos, and a summer roll for just $45! In NY $45 gets you just the entree. The grilled pork across the dishes was flavorful and the staff were friendly and efficient. Our food came out within 10 minutes of us ordering. I do wish that the pork varied across the appetizers and the vermicelli. I was expecting a nem nuong type of pork from the summer roll since that's what I've eaten at most other Viet restaurants, and a more fatty pork belly on the bao. They were still good, just didn't match my expectations. read more

Pho Please is tucked away in a shopping center on Riverside, and probably gets a lot of student traffic. It's a big airy space, very clean and hipster/industrial. I do not get the feeling I get at my favorite Vietnamese places, that grandma is back in the kitchen making magic. Instead, we got pleasant counter service from pretty girls in aprons, and ordered off a nicely organized and streamlined menu. The prices were standard for Austin these days--$9 for Banh Mi, $12 for Pho, and so on. We both ordered Banh Mi. I got the pork belly, and my guy got the shrimp. I asked for everything on mine, he said hold the jalapeño, but upon deconstructing our sandwiches, we couldn't find or see a trace of pate, which seemed odd. So both sandwiches lacked that livery undertone that makes these sandwiches special. I'd read about their house-made mayo, but there wasn't enough of it to get a sense of whether it was anything special. My pork belly was tasty, but only lukewarm, and looked and tasted more like the standard grilled pork shoulder, without that fabulous pork belly taste and texture. The bread was pleasant but unremarkable, but it didn't have that distinctive baguette crisp airy quality that the best Banh Mi have. The veggies were fresh, crunchy, very well done. The sandwiches themselves were BIG: I saved half of mine for later. My guy just said, "Too much bread!" and ate all the goodies out, leaving most of the bread behind. I asked if the shrimp was good. He shrugged, said it was fine, "but not enough--and isn't there supposed to be pate on this?" I liked my matcha bubble tea, and would declare it a pretty reasonable lunch...but my search for a great Banh Mi will continue. read more

Don't be put off by the hipster Riverside university vibe. I walked in with low expectations and immediately noticed several families of Vietnamese, a good sign it's authentic. This place is such a vibe. Light and bright and incredibly clean, not like the typical dark, dungeon-like hole in the walls with questionable health inspections, I usually frequent for this kind of food. Service is top-notch, no one is sitting around waiting long. What shocked me the most were my memories as I ate my chicken with vegetable pho of my mom and I making Turkey soup with leftover Thanksgiving Turkey. This place might not be "come to Jesus never before done kinda" pho, but it has a definitive "To Grandmother's House We Go" vibe that hits differently, but just as good. The broth is really simple and authentic, as it should be. The most natural pho I've had outside Vietnam and that includes Houston, Qatar, Dubai, NYC, and San Francisco. You may be disappointed that it's not swimming in MSG, but that's what makes it brilliant. The pieces of cabbage and carrots are huge! I'd recommend to wait for it to cool some and then notice how the flavors marinate so beautifully, if you feel the broth is boring and not dripping in salt, soy, MSG, and whatever else you're used to. Imagine a place where I didn't even need to add chili sauce, Sri racha, or soy sauce, it was great standalone. I paired my mega bowl of pho (they don't scrimp here!) with vegetarian egg rolls. These are a level up and kind of like Madam Ma'am's, perfectly crisp on the outside with that right amount of crunch. Best pho in Austin and I look forward to trying sister, Sip Pho on UT campus soon. Great job! read more

Come here if you're looking for solid Vietnamese food that's quick and easy (food comes out in 5-10 min). I was having the worst pho craving last night and had to wait until today to have it satisfied. I saw the great reviews for this place and was optimistic about giving it a shot. Walking in, I immediately recognize that I've been to this place before. I don't remember when or what I ordered, but the menu and ambiance are one-of-a-kind. There are Instagram images of their most popular dishes on the wall, and we ended up ordering the pho rare steak and brisket and the rice grill with eggroll and beef short ribs. I was a little conflicted when I paid upfront and was prompted to leave a tip: It's not a traditional restaurant where a server waits on you to order but your table is bussed for you once you finish. I loved the self-serve topping bar next to the soda machine! I was worried that the pho would come out without onion, cilantro, or green onion already included so I stocked up on extra that have since safely made it to my refrigerator. The wait for our food was not long at all, and everything came out hot and tasted delicious. I had the pho and the broth was absolutely delicious. The noodles were alright, nothing memorable. There was enough of a hefty portion of steak and brisket to last me past the point of having consumed all of my noodles, but all the meat was very lean so I wouldn't recommend consuming too much meat alone. The broth was so awesome namely because it came out at the perfect temperature, had a good color to it, was translucent, and had good flavor. I like to leave the broth as soon as I finish the noodles, but I just kept sipping away at this one. I didn't try the short rib rice plate, but it came out with a bowl of soup on the side which tasted pretty good by itself. It's certainly not an item I would order for the price or considering the fact that this restaurant has pho in the name, but I suppose you won't be disappointed if you're not in the mood for noodles. My first day in Austin was a cold and rainy day. I always like to eat soup, Chili, or Pho on days like that. My girl and I walked to Pho please because the reviews were good and it was close to where we were staying. The girl that helped us was really sweet, helped with recommendations, and put up with my sense of humor. We take our seats and wait. We watched others come in, order, and get their food. It really wasn't a problem, but we inquired about our food and the girl said she'd check for us. Turns out our order never printed in the kitchen so we were skipped. They immediately made our food, which would have been enough for us. But instead, the manager came out and apologized, he totally took care of us. It was amazing!!! I feel like they went above and beyond to make up for the minor mishap. The pho was very good. My normal Pho place doesn't put onions in and this place did.... I felt it made all the difference. Let me give it to you straight. I was born and raised in OC, California and their Vietnamese food game is pretty strong. So hopefully that gives me at least some credibility. Is this the best pho you'll ever have? Eh, probably not. Is this the best banh mi on earth? Nah, doubtful. BUT, if you want to go to a local Austin spot and get a nice variety of above average Vietnamese eats, this is the place. Plenty of pho options, vermicelli, banh mi, spring rolls, bao buns, and more. I had already been a fan, but recently revisited them for their $1 pho birthday deal, and instantly fell back in love and have already been two more times since. The space feels clean and modern and I'm told they are owned by the same folks who own Sip Pho. The "pho please" is full of meat and delicious beef broth. It sets the bar for what you want in pho. The dish that surprised me was the pork belly bao! The meat was tender and perfectly cooked. Fresh veggies like what you expect in a Banh mi, but wrapped inside a steamed bun instead. It was my first experience with PHO and with this restaurant. I was VERY PLEASED. I had the Chicken Pho plate to take out. I had never had Pho or any of the dishes offered so I asked the lady who took my order and she recommended this. She was very helpful to me and very pleasant too. Came on a Saturday around lunch time and most of the tables were full! Seemed to have a steady stream of people coming in. You place your order at the front, choose a table, then the servers will bring your food to you. Service is very quick! There's even a topics bar filled with jalapeños, lime, cabbage, bean sprouts and more!! Overall the food was good but all felt like it was missing something! I've been going to this pho joint since I went to UT, five years ago. They have the best Ramen in Austin, Texas. This restaurant is very clean, they have a very neat presentation, and it's simply so delicious. I recommend getting the beef brisket/rare steak pho.
