On a Saturday night around 6:45, I stopped by Pho Saigon Republic with my sister's hubby. Located in Chinatown, they don't have a parking lot so we found metered parking close by. We were seated promptly. Ambiance (2/5): You don't go to Chinatown for the ambiance. You go for the food. Like a lot of restaurants in the area, this Vietnamese restaurant is no frills. It was what I expected, so I was cool with it. Especially since the prices are affordable, by California standards too. Service (3/5): You also don't go to Chinatown for the service. They won't check on you often, they won't be friendly, but they will be efficient and bring your food out promptly. It was what I expected, so I was cool with it. Drinks (4/5): No alcoholic beverages, but you they do have da chanh (Vietnamese lemonade). If you've never had Vietnamese lemonade, and you like lemonade, try it. It'll be some of the best you've had. Food (4/5): While they have a menu full of Vietnamese classics, when I'm at a restaurant named "Pho Saigon Republic," I'm going to order pho. It also helped that it was a chilly evening out in LA. I went with the pho filet mignon which consists of broth, beef, onions, green onions, and noodles. Plus extras on the side like bamboo shoots and limes. I'm from Houston which has a large Vietnamese population. The pho here is quality. The broth was flavorful, and the portion size was filling. We also split some egg rolls which were stuffed with meat more than your typical egg rolls. All in all, a very solid meal that didn't break the bank. They close at 7:30 p.m. which is quite early for a restaurant. Especially an Asian one. Outside of that, no complaints! read more

A friend recommended I try the Pho here and I'm soooo glad I did! I had the order delivered and everything was perfectly sorted and packed. My only complaint was they didn't include siracha or hoisin sauce but, the broth is so good - I didn't miss it. The broth is truly amazing, the beef was tender even though I opted to have it cooked before adding it to my bowl. The basil and bean sprouts are the perfect addition to the Pho, it was perfect. I never heard of this place nor knew it existed, but on an adventure to get pho, no one got pho. Instead, we grabbed garlic noodles and the vermicelli dish with pork and egg rolls (my favorite!) Omg I absolutely loved the vermicelli and pork dish with egg rolls. It was so fresh and flavorful and the egg rolls that had that crunch, plus my bbq pork might have actually been better than the shaken beef in the garlic noodle dish. The garlic noodles were really good too, but I probably wouldn't come here specifically for these, because there are a few other places that do it slightly better than here. However, if you live close to here or don't want to take a long drive to Orange County or the SGV, there garlic noodles here will definitely fulfill those cravings. The shaken beef was also really tender and full of flavor too, so that was nice. The place has attentive service. Someone else ordered a soup that had its own fire. I want to try that next time! 1st time here. I tried their Special Beef Combination Noodles "Pho Dac Biet". Portion was huge for their price of $15. The Pho came with big bowl of soup with a lot of noodles and meat pieces. The soup itself tasted good and I can tell they didn't put a lot of msg in it. Beef meats were tender and a lot of variety of pieces included. I was full by eating half of this order. Service was good; staff were nice and attentive. This place is clean and less crowded on weekend. Difficult parking because it is on the street with paid meter parking. Been coming here since I was just 6 years old, now im 21! I'm glad to see that this pho restaurant is still around and thriving as the crowd for Chinatown has died down over the years. It's been a while since I've been here but they have gone through a pretty neat remodeling inside to keep up with modern style pho restaurants you see today. The quality of the food is just as delicious as I remembered. The broth is so rich and the prices are reasonable unlike other places! Service was great, our waitress was attentive to my aunt and I and consistent asked us how we were doing. This review is mostly for the management of Pho Saigon Republic. This place has been around for a while in Chinatown. I've decided to give it a shot and even though the Pho was good, there was a lot of mosquitos in the property and I basically didn't even get to finish my food because of the mosquito bites. There is a lot of standing water in the bathroom and on the curb of the building. The place feels pretty filthy as well and not maintained well properly. Make sure to bring long sleeves on a hot summer day to enjoy your Pho, otherwise the mosquitos will have a buffet on you. read more

We were a group of 4 that happened to be in the area on a Saturday around 12pm. We were hungry for some soup and stumbled upon this spot. The place was 2/3 full and immediately we were greeted by the friendly staff. They gave us the larger table in the back which was nice and roomy. The tv was a bit loud but it was playing the Vietnamese karaoke bops in the background so it was definitely a fun vibe in there. The staff was very attentive and made sure we had water refills. We all got the pho filet mignon, I got the regular (shown in photo) and man did I wish I had ordered a large because the regular felt like such a small position. I had to knock off one star because the portion size was so small. However 4 stars for the pho itself, the meat was perfectly cooked and the broth was so flavorful. Ugh...I really don't like giving anything less than 4 stars, I usually just don't write the review. But, in this case, I feel like I've been led astray, and I need to set it straight. As a Vietnamese person, I really wanted this place to be good, and I normally lean a little biased towards my Viet gang. Unfortunately, they really missed the mark on all fronts here. The Book Was Its Cover If you find a restaurant in the back alley of a shady Chinatown, you'll probably get what you'd expect. Not that they can really control how messy and gross the outside is, but it does pull in bugs, flies, etc. from the outside. They hit a lunch rush, and almost half the tables weren't cleaned up yet, which led to more of a mess in the dining room. The Smell (Mildew?) There's a really weird smell of wet dog + old irish pub + five dudes dorm room in the restaurant that's so pungent that it's hard to think about anything else. It's probably from the dirty rags that they used to wipe down the tables. The Pho It wasn't THE worst bowl I've had, but it's probably on the list for Worst 5, though. The broth was murky and overly salty. The brisket was too fatty and had some really chewy parts in it. They had a knock-off Sriracha, which I guess I can appreciate since there is a shortage. Anyone who commented that it was the "best" pho or it was "really" good, must have never had pho before. Around 12 of us came to this place on a Sunday afternoon. I am not a big fan of Phở but I enjoy vietnamese rice-based dishes, so I went with that. I had the one with chicken, pork, shrimp and Chinese sausage. Also some egg rolls and spring rolls.
