As fans of vietnamese food, I'd say this place was a bit more lackluster than what it was hyped up to be. First off, extremely disorganized. You have to remind the servers of your order multiple times. And the person taking our order never came back. Second, the service is hit or miss. We had to ask for the extras that normally come with certain dishes (like the culantro for ph) came with an attitude but then later another server noticed our sodas were flat and brought out new ones without us even asking. (I guess the one saving grace) Lastly, the food. While we thought the ph was good we could tell they put a lot of MSG. One dish we ordered was supposed to come with "broken rice" came with regular sticky rice. Another dish we ordered with vermicelli noodles came with what seemed like bún bò hu noodles. And the spring rolls tasted old, and hard to eat. Almost as if it was fried multiple times. I came with fellow Yelper Julia V to check out this Vietnamese restaurant after hearing so much about it on Yelp. They are located in a strip mall next door to Ranch 99 along with other Asian restaurants and shops on the other side of the street. The restaurant seemed to be bustling nonstop before we arrived in the early evening. The décor appeared worn out for the day except for the streaks of neon lights that outlined the edge of the ceiling to couple with persistent sunlight coming through the large windows. With large TVs and families adorned everywhere, the vibe was festive and service was fast paced. We shared a Pho Tai Gan Sach ($5.75) that came with rare beef, tendon, and tripe. The broth was passable but not spectacular as the subdued bone flavor required heavier depth. The beef was mostly cooked and shriveled by the time it reached the table, and the amount of noodles in the bowl was unsatisfactory. The tendon and tripe were good but not filled to the brim. The experience was still better than anything in my area, but I refuse to give out false hopes for those searching for greatness. From the many good looking photos that have been posted on Yelp, it appeared that they are more than capable of meeting great expectations. I felt like I had fallen off the bandwagon before getting on, but there was enough substance there for me to give it another chance. On the flip side, I was very pleased with the Bánh Hi ThÎt NÜong ($7.75). The grilled pork was lean, tender and perfectly seasoned with complex flavors. The dish also came with delicious rice vermicelli paste, fresh vegetables, pickled radish and carrot, and sheets of rice papers to wrap everything in. Portion was outstanding as there were enough to make 8 servings to share. The only downside was the pickled veggies as the crisp-sweet-tangy flavors were absent in otherwise a delicious feast. Their pho was suspect but I am likely to give it another try in the hopes for a better experience. I am also intrigued by their Seven Courses of Beef and a list of rice dishes as there was enough authenticity on the menu to make me want to return. Service was horrendous! My friend and I went there for lunch. We both ordered pho. My pho came first so I waited for my friend to get hers before I ate. I asked our server where her pho was, he kept on saying it was coming. People came in after us and got there food before her. At this point my pho was soggy we literally waited over 30 minutees for my friend to get her food. The servers are slow. And don't expect to get your drinks until the end of your meal. A couple of the servers were wearing gloves on one hand. Wiping tables with the gloves and the serving food with the same glove. The glove was yellow and so dirty looking thank goodness I didn't get him as a server. This is the best Pho place you will find in Los Angeles. Very authentic and it's super cheap as well! I came to this place when I was at UCLA back in the day. My Vietnamese friend took me and I remember thinking, wow this is really good. Well recently I have been hanging out more with my valley friends and I have found myself here quite a bit. Yes you have to wait a bit, but it is well worth it. I have had their spring rolls which were quite tasty. And I always get the small bowl of the beef brisket pho. My friend had the chicken pho (I've never had chicken pho, not a huge fan, but it was okay). The service here is always great, too. They are quick as well which is a huge plus considering the wait at the beginning to be seated. By the time you are seated and staring at everyone else's food, you just want to have your own! It was pouring rain today and I happened to be in the area so I dropped by Pho So 1, "The Best Beef Noodle Soup." How awesome does a piping hot bowl of pho broth sound on such a cold, dreadful day? Really awesome, right!? It was around 11:45 a.m. and it wasn't all too crowded; they had a few tables that seat four diners but all of the bigger tables were taken. I, all by my lonesome, took up a whole four-seater (not because I have a big behind [well, I do, actually] but because they don't don't have two-seater tables!). As soon as I sat down, it took a while for someone to come take my order. I had to flag someone down to get my order taken. I ordered the following: #129 - Ca-Phe Phin Sua: hot, filtered coffee with condensed milk, French style. *I get this iced because I really need some ice/water to dilute it. Strong but sweet enough because of the condensed milk. Delicious! (You can just call this "vietnamese coffee" and they'll understand what you're ordering as well.) #98 - Goi Cuon: Summer rolls with shrimp and pork with rice noodle rolled with rice paper. (There are three summer rolls per order.) *When I go to pho restaurants, I have to try the summer rolls. How their summer rolls taste tells me a lot about a vietnamese restaurant. A lot of bad pho restaurants have equally disappointing summer rolls. It's all about putting effort into even the little things. Pho So 1's summer rolls are GREAT! They aren't soggy, and they give you just enough veggies + pork + shrimp + rice noodles to leave you satisfied. Because I had to eat the pho, I only tried one, figuring I can take the rest home. Well, it was so good that I got an extra order to-go! After tasting one, I knew I could count on getting a great bowl of pho. #19 - Tai, Rare Steak Pho. The bowl looks a bit small from far away but the quantity ... man, there's a lot of food crammed in there! *I wasn't in the mood for odd body parts so I just went with the good ol' ALL-STEAK pho. Can't go wrong with that! First, the broth. I don't put anything in my broth (oyster / hot sauce) because I really want to tasteeee it. In all its natural glory, the broth was GREAT. They really hit home-run with this. After the broth-tasting test, I added the rest of the ingredients and IN I WENT! For a small bowl, MY is it filling. And the meat? They gave a heaping amount of it. I barely had room to fit in the veggies! In the end, including the extra order of summer rolls to go, I paid $20.90. Sure it seems like a lot for one person but remember - I got another order to go on top of the two I couldn't finish. So three meals for me for $21 -- not so bad. Worth every penny! "Pho So" good!! Pho is hard to find in the Westside, but decided to visit this place due to its rave reviews. The restaurant is right next to 99 Ranch Market with a large parking lot. Restaurant looks very plain, your simple run-of-the-mill Vietnamese restaurant in San Gabriel Valley or Orange County. The menu has a large selection of Vietnamese food. They even have 7 course beef for $20. I decided to go with a regular size pho with rare steak and tripe. Pho is really good, but I felt like it is lacking a bit somewhere in taste. Maybe they didn't boil soup long enough. I also ordered the fried egg rolls. I didn't like the skin of the egg roll. It tasted a bit chewy and rubbery. I would not recommend it. In an unassuming stripmall next to 99 Ranch Market at the Northeast corner of Sepulveda and Victory Blvds is Pho So 1 - my #1 go-to for Vietnamese/Pho in the Van Nuys area. The restaurant itself is not much to behold but the food is good (borderline very good) and very reasonably priced (ok, it's 1x$ cheap) - it has gotten very popular, and busy. If you don't mind sharing a table, a single/couple can be seated almost immediately. The menu is pretty decent (close to 100 items IIRC) and has all the Pho-fare typicals, again, all reasonably priced. Lately my favorite is the Chicken Pho, small size with extra chicken, and an appetizer order of Egg Rolls - enough to share but I can managed this duo for lunch on my own (read, glutton) on a good day; although a nap threatens shortly thereafter. The Pho broth is nice, not oily, and the noodles are glassy and pristine. The egg rolls are crispy and seved on a bed of lettuce with basil, pickles and radish. The Pho, depending on your order, is served with a side of bean sprouts, basil, sliced jalapeño and lime. I have also had the beef tendon, rare beef and other Pho typicals. Like the other yelpers mentioned, their pho is pretty good. My girlfriend ordered the pho and she said she didn't taste a lot of the msg so that's a plus! I had ordered #51 and it did not disappoint, you really can't go wrong with ordering vermicelli with eggrolls and beef. I looked around and noticed there were a lot of non-asians there eating there, gotta feel somewhat proud :) The service is typical of Vietnamese restaurant thus the -1 star. It was 12 o'clock in the afternoon and it was completely packed. I dig this place, good pho, and it's the real deal. I've been to this location a few times now, and I've always been turned off by the service, cleanliness, and inconsistency. I've received cold/warm bowls of pho here before, I have received pho with very small amounts of meat, etc. This place has been inconsistent to me. To boot, this place is dirty-ish, and some of the waiters are just flat-out rude. Last time I was here, my friend reserved a shared table. He ordered water for me. Definitely not bad at all. If you come here, let me recommend the #59 or you can get the #58 if you don't like seafood. It's basically a do it yourself spring rolls dish. I love the noodles (banh hoi) that they give you to put in the rice paper to construct your spring rolls. Simply amazing. I just love it. I was also able to try the #1 - Pho Special. It was really bland tasting but when I ate the left over the next day after microwaving the broth, it was just perfect. I don't know if the microwaving did the trick or as with any soup, it always taste better the next day but whatever it was. The Pho was great. We spent over an hour waiting for a table and then decided to order take-out instead. Btw, that only took around 15 minutes. My homies at work and I call this place Fly Pho, because if you sit at the back of the restaurant in the spring and summer all the flies hover back there and keep you company. Having said that, I still am crazy about their egg rolls, crunchy, light and delicious. I generally order the chicken Pho or #26 which is the second best dish on the menu, crunchy sauteed noodles with vegetables and meat in a rich brown gravy, very tasty. My beau always gets #23 Shrimp Pho, but I won't eat that dish...cleaning the shrimp's black vein of death is not the restaurant's forte'. The B on the window doesn't deter me, lower rated joints are generally tastier. Prices are a little cheaper than the average pho restaurant! #1 Deluxe Pho ($6.75): Whaaaat?! $6.75? My sister and I shared since we both weren't too hungry. Good amount of noodles. Broth was average, nothing out of this world but the service was on par. If you love onions, ask for a side of vinegar onions! To our surprise, it was free here! Most pho establishments start charging for it now. The additional bean Spouts, basil and jalapeño send the dish into soup nirvana. The perfect amount of lime is provided, they know what they are doing. It's just that there's really a long line to get a seat. Their spring rolls are the best. Not a lot of Vietnamese restaurants do it the way they fry it. This is my favorite Pho restaurant in the Valley. I always order the Pho Tai Bo Vien. Like any typical Vietnamese restaurant, you get a tiny glass of water and barely much service. Is there a union about these small glasses of water or what? Hahaha. Any ways, the Pho is great. I do however miss the really poor cashier back in the day that wanted to flip customers and tables as fast as possible. He literally threw a customer's change over the counter and on the floor, just to get the next guest into the next table. Wow! They are much better now, which is really boring. Oh ...
