I have no idea why this place merits 4 stars. It doesn't compare to the places in east San Jose. The pho is okay, not bad but not great. The main problem is with the broth. As others have mentioned, the beef pho doesn't comes with beef broth as is usually the case. The broth is much clearer and lighter, probably chicken broth. I had the beef pho here and it was worse than average. The portion was large, which was great, but the bowl it came in was too small and it didn't have enough broth. Subsequently, it was difficult to cook the rare steak because it didn't retain enough heat. In addition, the broth was pretty flavorless. This is one of the few places in walking distance from my job, so we tend to go there every few weeks. I've had a few of their vegetarian offerings: fried rice, chow mein, and pad thai. The chow mein was the only one I really enjoyed (it had a sweet flavor that went well with the veggies and sauce); there was a weird aftertaste to the vegetable fried rice, and the pad thai sauce didn't go so well with the food in my opinion. I ordered pho ga with dark meat (legs, thighs) chicken, but what arrived was a bowl of yellow water with thinly shaved slices of... something. It didn't taste like chicken or pork and didn't even look like either one--this is coming from an avid home cook. Honestly, I put the bowl aside because I started to get a little freaked out. The broth was flavorless and the rice paper around the shrimp rolls was nearly dry. My friend's food was just as bad. Have been here 3 times. The food is good. Their special pho is great. There is a lot of meat and just the right amount of noodles. We tried pad Thai here once but it was not so authentic. My friend and I decided to go here for lunch because of the high reviews.. I ordered the Chicken Pho and he ordered the Beef Pho (#1). Both of our meats were overcooked therefore chewy. However, the worst part was my chicken -- it did not taste like chicken! The pieces were like thin cut of old breast meat from the frozen section of a grocery store or something. I went here with a big group of co-workers. Most of us ordered number 36, fried wonton soup with noodles. There was a a lot of meat in the soup. They said their favorite part is the roasted pork. I got number 7, wonton soup. I wished mine had more wontons. Next time, I will order it with noodle. The broth was really good. The workers here were very friendly. I've been here three times now and it is definitely a hidden gem, hole in the wall type place. I've only had the beef pho which is great, but they have an extensive menu. The rice plates look good to try on a future visit. This past Friday we got there around 1130am, and by 12pm people had to wait for a table. I guess the word is out about this place because the restaurant got crowded quick. Also, the waiter brought us complimentary red bean dessert which he said they give on Fridays. We go to Pho occasionally. I really liked my wonton soup, however, the other two eaters in my party were unhappy with theirs. I think only because they didn't order something they wouldn't have normally tried. If you are going for your first visit, stay with something you know! Once, I even called the when they were closed (by mistake), and they were kind enough to offer to let me come in for pick up anyway.
