It can take a bit of circling around to find a spot, especially during peak hours since it's a shared lot. Service was okay, but the food does take a while to come out even for basic items, so it doesn't really feel like a true "quick grab and go" situation despite the vibe. I decided to try the silken tofu with fresh mango. Right away, the texture of the tofu was soft and bouncy. It was easy to break apart and eat piece by piece. They also sell a bunch of "to-go" items such as cold appetizers, desserts (their durian rolls are good), and Cantonese style bottled tea. The service is quick and the staff are quite friendly. My fave dishes include beef chow fun, Yeung chow fried rice, mango soy custard, and black sticky rice. Tonight my family enjoyed some favorites and also tried the mixed fruit delight and red bean mochi for dessert. The mixed fruit delight was sweet (but not sugary) and refreshing. The red bean mochi was soft and the coconut on the outside added just enough texture to keep it interesting. I would order them again. South Pasadena, Cali. Love this place. Its the same business as the one in the SGV but much smaller and houses 6 tables. Been Coming here for a minute. It is authentic Chinese so if you are very much into the Panda chain, you're not gonna enjoy this place, so save yourself the agony and go to Panda if that is your palate. From Boba, to Taiwanese dessert, to really, really good Chinese stew pots, I come here typically for takeout because they serve up a brisk takeout business. They are super efficient here also. So I am here again for a quick lunch because it's not only cheap, it's very tasty and taste like it's homemade. They use less sugar than many Chinese restaurants and they serve up authentic and delicious Taiwanese-Chinese dishes. Whenever I order something to go, it's usually ready in five minutes, no lie. Updated: I don't know how Phoenix got out of our regular rotation for good Chinese food so close to home, but glad we came back last week. We had the: *Spicy salted squid (not overcooked this time). I love that it's barely coated and never greasy *Szechuan string beans (always chock full of garlic and sliced jalapeño) *Szechuan style fresh mango shaved ice. OMG, this was the brightest culinary spot in my week! The ice was fluffy, the mango was perfectly ripened, the portion was plenty for 2 to share. It was truly Heaven in a bowl. Phoenix has added some new ordering options and now gives a free desert when you order $40+. Our freebie was passion fruit custard, which we took home because we were stuffed after this great meal. I ordered the chicken Hainan rice (can't remember the exact name), and it was delicious. The chicken was flavorful and comforting. The winter melon rind was also partially left on and was hard and brittle. Not my favorite, would not order again. You can never go wrong with Phoenix. The menu is quite extensive so you for sure can find something you're in the mood for. The ladies working the cashier are super friendly and are accommodating. The space is a little tighter than other locations so I usually go to this one for takeouts since it's right next to my office. We love their cold dishes, especially the bean curds and the seaweed. The desserts are also really yummy but are on the sweeter side, same with the drinks. This branch is bogo a lot on ubereats and is quite a steal. Deceptive practices. Good food yes, BUT it comes in ONE-HALF of the container you think you're getting. My wife said. "I don't need rice" as we have rice ready at home.... and the girl snapped back, "Each dish COMES with rice!". Okay... Don't have a heart attack. So we get home and open up the three containers to see two things: One dish did NOT come with rice, and two, the dishes with rice are small on the serving amount. I need not write more. If I had to choose one signature dish at Phoenix Inn (all locations) that nobody else has, it's their salted boneless chicken. I've tried to replicate it at home following Youtube recipes but it's just not the same. The best version is at their Alhambra location near Valley and Garfield. The version in South Pasadena has zero flavor and the texture is all wrong, very disappointing. Their salt and pepper pork chop, however, is excellent. UberEats order comes with jasmine rice (even though it doesn't say so online.) which I think is a bad deal because you get only half portion of the entree and the other half is rice. read more

Small and intimate location. Service isn't the best but I don't complain. Today however I have to complain about service and management. I came in to sit. They saw me and didn't bring a menu like they usually do. So I wave nicely to show I'm here and ready. She ignores me. There is three other employees working and none are making eye contact with anyone out here. They are plastered to the new system they are trying to learn. Another large table gets seated after me but gets service before me. So I go up to the counter where there are two employees at two stations. The manager is standing right behind them. No one says anything to acknowledge that I'm there. I wait and wait-only to get attitude from the girl throwing down a menu in front of me. I'm still not sure she got my order but she did tell me to go sit down. I think that if there is a new system. They should work on training before rolling it out. I'm really disappointed. I've been a loyal customer for a long time, but this recent experience left me frustrated. I ordered two items, and my husband went to pick them up and bring them back to the office. When we opened the bag, we found only one fork and one chopstick set--even though the order was clearly for two people. I called to let them know, and the person I spoke to told me that from now on, customers need to request utensils. That would have been fine--if they had told us ahead of time. I've been dining at and ordering takeout from Phoenix for years and it has never disappointed. Their best item would have to be the garlic chicken wings because the way they cook it crispy and season it with a lot of flavor. I also really like their beef chow fun because the beef is cooked really well to a point it's still pretty tender without drying out. The shrimp fried rice and seafood hot pot are also excellent as well. It's not the cheapest place to dine at but the portions are pretty generous. You won't get a lot of vegetable fillers in the beef chow fun and shrimp fried rice, for example. You'll feel like your dollar went pretty far with the amount of protein you get. They definitely add MSG to a lot of their dishes, which is something I'm not against and I admit I use this a lot myself when I cook my own food. I haven't tried a ton of their desserts because I'm not a big durian fan. I did try their mango mochi balls once and thought they were enjoyable - a little soft yet chewy, but not the freshest. An overdue review for a restaurant that my family regularly orders take out. The food is consistently good. The service is meh but efficient. Order your food, pay and served efficiently. The restaurant space is small so we have never actually dined inside because we order takeout. They also have a few tables outside for outdoor dining but again nothing fancy. I don't see patrons eating inside often but more to go orders - like myself, we order take and enjoy our food at home. Highly recommended for good Chinese food! read more

Parking can be a little crazy depending on the time but for the most part, I can always find a spot. Coming in at night, it can be easy to miss the entrance so look carefully! I recommend using cash because I got double charged one time for someone else's order. They ended up refunding me but I could have easily missed that on my credit card statement. I always make the mistake of thinking the tofu's in their little fridge is already flavored but they label it to show you what they can flavor it as. For instance, I wanted the mango tapioca with condensed milk tofu and she told me to grab the silken tofu with ginger. She clarified to me that it does not have the ginger taste (I don't like ginger) and sure enough, she flavored it with everything I wanted so it was delicious!!! No frills, consistent, reliable Chinese food joint. The drinks and desserts are great as well. The dining room offers about 5 tables with 4 chairs at each one. There are about three patio tables outside if watching miserable drivers sitting traffic is your thing. On a hot summer day, my family and I like to grab these dessert drinks from Phoenix, they are mostly coconut milk base with various chopped fruits mixed in, melon, mango, and of course tapioca. Since it is not a caffeinated drink like boba tea, my 9 years old can have as much as her little body desires. Recently I decided to try their line of herbal tea drinks. Truly a sign that I am getting older or just feeling nostalgic, my grandma used to make these herbal teas and they tasted exactly like homemade. Listed on the product labels are all natural ingredients and very little sugar for taste. Coconut Mango Rolls: A chunk of fresh mango and mango pudding wrapped in sweet mochi and rolled in grated coconut. It's heaven. Funky dessert time! Not really that funky if you like DURIAN, which I do. I stopped by here for takeout desserts for a little dinner party I was having at the house. I wanted something light, fresh, and DIFFERENT for my friends and family. I describe the desserts here as Chinese style with a Southeast Asian touch (Not too sweet with various tropical flavors). Besides the durian stuff, I also got mango, red bean, coconut, milk and taro flavors in the form of : pudding, panna cotta, and mochi. Most desserts here are of the cold type, but they also have hot desserts too. I believe they do have Westernized desserts as well ;however, that didn't grab my attention on this visit. The best-sellers seems to be the: Mango or Durian Mochi Roll. Personally, I favored the Panna Cotta (cut in little squares) and "Hot Sticky Black Rice with Young Coconut" porridge drizzled with cream. Funky and earthy tasting, but so good! I reccommend this place if you like Asian-y desserts or want to try something different (reads: Durian). Lastly, I heard the food here is pretty tasty - next time. I have a weakness for Chinese/Cantonese style comfort food (porridge, wonton with egg noodles, etc), so I'll be back for the food items. In terms of service I didn't find anybody rude, just busy. This little gem is easy to miss! I've driven by there hundreds of times and didn't find it until I was searching one evening for congee, and there it was, just minutes away! Hot chicken congee and baby bok choy in clear broth on a chilly night was so perfect. The service was friendly and helpful, and the shop was very clean. Their Preserved Vegetables & Pork Noodles had very little preserved veggies, which was a bummer. If Phoenix Food Boutique was in West LA, I'd go there all the time.
