Stumbled upon this little Andersonville gem while looking for a quick bite over the lunch hour. I'll say I was pleasantly surprised. It's a great spot for take out with fresh ingredients and sandwich meat that's carved while you wait. Piatto Pronto is essentially a small, Italian style grocery store with quality products from all over Europe as well as the US. Food is ordered at the counter and can be taken to go or eaten outside on the cafe tables. Service was quick, pleasant, and the workers in there all referred to me as 'boss'. It caught my eye as I biked past one day, then I checked reviews and confirmed that it was what it looked like, a legit Italian local sandwich place. They make everything fresh, so it takes some time. The sandwiches are huge, easily enough for two meals, and they are very reasonably priced, like the big sandwich places in Little Italy in New York. There are several interesting options, even for people who aren't that into deli meats. The meatball sub was very good. They do sandwiches, panini, and I think they had wraps, too. It also has a bunch of Italian cooking ingredients, imported and not, and they cram quite a bit into the small store. I wanted t wait until I actually visited Piatto Pronto to review. The first time I tried this place, it was through delivery. I got their version of the Cuban sandwich and it was delicious. I was craving a sandwich today and stopped by the actual store. This place is tiny, but I got in line and this guy got in line behind me. So...why did the guy ringing people up check him out before taking my order, not even acknowledging me? So bizarre. I went with the Il Milano, which I've heard good things about. The verdict? Bland. It really wasn't anything special, especially the bread. If I do go back, I'll probably stick to their hot sandwiches. read more

After another couple of visits, I've added a star. Really, it's just lovely! This is what I imagine old fashioned shopping was like. People who know your name and chat with you about the neighborhood. It's s slower pace and I love it. Awesome mini-gourmet grocery, deli, and sandwich shop. I stopped here for a quick lunch before yoga and it was the perfect portion and delicious. I paired it with an organic honey-sweetened tea and really enjoyed browsing the store while my food was being prepared. Extremely affordable prices for such high quality items. I highly recommend the cuban panini, but next time will go for one of the cold sandwiches. Truly a gem - makes me wish I could call Andersonville home. P.S. They have outdoor seating! read more

We've been going to Piatto Pronto since the day it opened, and I'm thrilled to come here and find that all the reviews confirm what we already know: THIS PLACE IS AWESOME. I grew up in an Italian family on the East coast; "hoagies" were a staple food. I've searched and searched for a real Italian hoagie in Chicago. You can only imagine how thrilled I was to find it (and in my neighborhood, no less)! Everything about these sandwiches are perfect: the fresh deli meats, the oil and vinegar, the shredded lettuce, and the bread. Oh my gosh--the bread! In addition to being a great sandwich shop, PP is also the perfect neighborhood Italian market. They have loads of fresh meats and cheeses, house made salads, Italian sodas, cookies, fresh-baked breads, tomato foccacia, gelato, Italian ice, fresh pastas and wonderful soups. Try the fresh goat cheese ravioli or the Tuscan white bean soup. Both are amazing and authentic. Basically, you should come for a sandwich and leave with a bag full of everything else. I like value. I like quality. I notice the extra touches. I like this place. Think of it as a no frills euro-mediterranean market complete with fine salts, fine olive oil, aged cheeses, some pate, pita chips, fresh baked bread, imports from anywhere (just ask the owner- he'll get it). I needed some freash ricotta, didn't see it on display, asked, he had the premium stuff in the back- sold. It's always fun to see what they have in store- and I'm not the only one, I overheard another customer recently "You have everything I want here!". What a great stop just before catching the Ravenswood Metra for Ravinia. They've recently updated their cold salad options and are making the homemade (labor intensive) Eggplant parmesan (that is crazy delicious!!!!) pesto and brushetta. How to budget for these items? In most cases, you can't beat the price for what you are getting. In other cases, just consume less. But don't deprive yourself of quality! Think of it this way- our nation has some of the worst processed food in the world... farmers eat better. So grab a brick of aged cheddar and live a little- make it last, too. Bottom line: Great prices for deli/cheese, made-to-order sandwhiches, cold salads, delicious chocolate wafers from Italy and if they stick to the unique/quality format- everything else is probably great, too. I rarely give 5* for a sandwich. Well, it happened here and it totally defined it for me. But, that isn't the only reason as the second you walk in, you feel like you've been coming here forever. I was in here for lunch and there were several long time customers. I was made to feel just like them even though I had never been in before. I have passed by here countless times and always told myself that I wanted to come in. I finally caved and stopped on in. I had to get a dolce di parma sub 6" sub as that was all I needed. This was just flat out killer. The prosciutto was obviously great, but the fresh mozzarella balls and the pesto with it just took it to a rare level I also picked up a small thing of their homemade bruschetta and some pasta. I haven't been able to find rigatoni this large and the bruschetta was great. The rigatoni wasn't cheap, but the bruschetta was just like $2.50 No longer will I just pass by here and go somewhere else. This little place is a gem! I always get good service and a 12" sub for only $7! There sub is pretty big and filling. I usually split it with someone. Different varieties all taste pretty good but I always stick with my Milano. I definitely recommend this place. You're in and out fast too! read more

The sandwiches alone warrant 5 stars--they are fresh, with good quality, interesting, and flavorful ingredients, and generously sized. Awesome! The problem is the complete lack of an ordering and paying system. Grocery buyers, sandwich orderers, deli samplers -- all come together in a crazy mob because there's no direction or flow to the store. You can't blame Piatto Pronto for its success and high-volume business. But hopefully it will soon adjust to its popularity and make the process easier for itself AND its customers. Sandwiches are great. They don't skimp on anything especially the size - if you order a foot long, you're getting a foot long and then some. I tried the Amy's Favorite and it was delicious. We also got the Italian pasta salad. Refreshing. I would like to go back and buy some of my groceries here and make an authentic Italian meal. I was working in the city when I dropped by for lunch and ordered the Dulce di Parma. Hands down one of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life. Simply put, Piatto Pronto is a gem. Came here as I was exploring Andersonville & after a recommendation from a friend. I had the Sicilian panini which was extremely disappointing. The bread was toasted, but the cheese was cold & not melted at all. The idea sounded so good, but the outcome unfortunate. I may try it again when in the neighborhood. However, I'm sticking to the Half Italian Grocer for my sandwiches. Nice selection of unique Italian goods. read more

I really love this spot in Andersonville. My parents turned me onto it since my hard-to-please-in-the-realm-of-sandwiches father loves this place. The owner is really friendly and these guys know how to put a sandwich together. The spot also offers tons more that you would be hard-pressed to find at your local Jewel. I am beyond sick of people suggesting Potbelly's for lunch at work... and this place is just the fix for it. It's also just a little off the main stretch on Clark, so parking is not as much of a problem if you are just running in to grab a few goodies. read more

I can't believe I've lived on the upper edge of Andersonville for like a year, and I just found out about this place. Was walking by and just decided to hop in and have a snack. My boyfriend and I meandered around and everything looked so so so yummy, so we decided to get a 6" sandwich and split it for a snack. We got the Dolce Di Parma (prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, sundried tomatoes, basil, etc) and a limonciatta and walked down the block to sit on a bench and eat. It was so mind-numbingly delicious that we just kind of looked at each other like "omfg". I wanted to walk back since I hadn't gotten the name of the place, and the owner saw me looking at the awning and beckoned me to come in. He asked me what was wrong, and I said "Nothing, it's amazing and we want to come back!" And he handed me a card. :) Mmm I'm gonna walk over again today since it's that good. read more

Having grown up with an abundance of excellent Italian delis on the east coast, I was disappointed to have to drive to the suburbs to find a good one here in Chicago. I didn't realize this little gem was hiding right here in my neighborhood! I've been in twice and the owner, Mike, never fails to make me feel welcome. I've tried the sandwiches and salads and both are delicious and fairly priced. I've perused the deli, cheese and grocery selections and I'm pleased with what I've seen. Lots of fresh frozen pasta, frozen prepared meals and some obscure Italian grocery items have caught my eye. Piatto Pronto has quickly moved up on my list of non-chain "fast" food destinations. Trekked out here last saturday in search of a pastrami sandwich, and ended up finding something better. The "New Yorker" with pastrami came with lettuce, tomato, and cheese (and mayo or mustard)....so a pretty far cry from the pastrami on rye I was looking for, but on the toasted bread it was still enjoyable. We tried the highly recommended dolce di parma (prosciutto, pesto, fresh mozz, sun dried tomatoes) and killed the 12" sandwich. So I'm from NYC and everyone knows how amazing their delis are. Needless to say I was missing my deli sandwiches and when I found Piatto Pronto it brought me back home. PIATTO PRONTO is by far the BEST deli I have found in Chicago and trust that I have searched throughly. I always get the Dolci Di Parma because I love prosciutto and its always so delicious. My boyfriend and I are regulars and pretty sure we have almost tried everything on the menu and nothing is bad. If you've never had an Italian sub before, this place is pretty good. But if you've ever had a truly good Italian sub, Piatto Pronto seems like a wasted opportunity. Really it's not much better than what one might expect from Jimmy Johns or Subway. The bread is generic, the toppings are generic, and there isn't enough meat on it to say one way or the other. It's a shame because if this deli bothered to put some love into their sandwiches, I'd be happy to pay a couple dollars more for a sub and give it five stars instead of three. read more

I really like this shop, a lot. The Caprese Sandwich is amazing, and the selection of goods is pretty remarkable. I also love the Tomato/Mozzarella salad. My only complaint is that some of the items are a bit pricey (I know, I know, a lot of its imported,) and the counter/register area is kind of disorganized, as far as who takes my order, makes my sandwich, rings me up. I always feel like I'm in the way when I'm waiting to pay, or waiting for my food. But the guys there are ridiculously nice, even spotting me the change I didn't have a few times. Unfortunately, there was no underground fighting tournament with Jean Claude Van Damme (oh, like you wouldn't stay for that? Don't kid yourself, you're not above that.). However, I walked away with a tasty sandwich with wicked good bread, so not a total loss. I also found a place that has a lot of euro groceries, which makes me feel classy when I buy them. Whenever in the area working, I make it a point to stop in and order a sandwich. I don't care if its lunchtime or not I will make it a point to stop in. If I want turkey I go with "Amy's Favorite", otherwise I like the "II Milano". Great taste, even better price especially for the size of the sandwich. This place is awesome! I crave this place on a weekly basis and since I am from the Jersey Shore it brings me back to my roots. I noticed in other reviews people complain about the bread being a little stale or food a little moldy. Eh, small businesses have their drawbacks. I'd much rather buy some stale homemade bread rather than the crap they sell in super markets that was made by a factory. I recently got almost two pounds of homemade Italian sausage for 7 dollars. I made sausage and pepper sandwiches that night which were delicious! And you cannot beat that price for homemade! I have also had two of their sandwiches, I can't remember the names now but I think any of their sandwiches would be tasty. I will go back again and again for all my Italian food needs! read more

This place is a REAL Italian deli... huge Italian subs for $6 with all fresh authentic ingredients. I had the 12" IL Milano sub. I just went there for lunch and I think I am going to stop back on my way home from work for dinner. Also, a special note. I noticed while i was in there that they have a nice selection of Italian cooking ingredients for you guys who like to use nothing but the best when cooking at home. Absolutely love this place. It's my go-to Italian deli. Mike and his staff are super friendly, and remember their customers. Great prices and selection. Their sandwiches are aaaaamazing--fresh, huge, filling and made with high quality ingredients. And the best part--they aren't super expensive!!! For the same price of a nasty subway sandwich, you can have a delicious sandwich from Piatto Pronto, with way better and higher quality ingredients!! Also, the 12 in, sandwich is more than enough to share between two people!! My only semi-gripe? Not very many places to sit, and the seats they do have are outside and sometimes not even set up! :( But its ok...we make do with a bench around the corner, or we take it down to the beach for an impromptu picnic! read more

I ordered a Paninni today with rosemary ham, mozzarella, and olive tarmalade. all I can say is it was the best pannini I have ever eaten. I also bought some reasonably priced olive oil and apricot preserves. I love this store/deli. They even sell Marmite from Australia. Go and treat yourself. read more
