I gave it 5 stars for the wonderful service we received from the staff. They are very attentive and prepared our delicious Nova Classics bagels order with such care and a smile. They put extra touch by giving us sliced cucumbers to accompany with our bagels. The place is clean and ate al fresco and plenty enough of seats to dine. While visiting New York City recently I really wanted to find a good bagel place. I searched Yelp and Google Maps and found a highly rated spot within 2 blocks of my hotel! So on a rainy Autumn morning I made my way to the Pick A Bagel at the corner of 8th Avenue and 53rd street. Once inside I found a busy kitchen with tables full of folks having breakfast. The large menu runs across the wall above the kitchen area - easy to read. I joined the line and scanned the menu, seeing many choices of bagel flavors and schemer (they have 8 flavors of cream cheese). I chose the everything bagel with regular cream cheese and for my wife the pumpernickel with regular cream cheese as well. I scooted down the line to the cashier and ordered two small mocha to go. Within a few minutes I was walking back to our hotel with bagels and fresh coffee. The bagels were soft and full of flavor - and they were not stingy with the cream cheese - plenty loaded into our bagels. Loved our food so much, I returned the next morning and ordered an Egg Sandwich with bacon and cheese on a plain bagel. It was also delicious. I have been going to Pick A Bagel for 10 years. Since they reopened after a renovation, they have cheaped out and reduced the amount of cream cheese from abundant to merely a thin spread that barely covers the bagel, like a spread of butter. I have been there several time since they reopened and hoped it was just a worker's mistake. It wasn't. This is done on purpose to increase their margins. I expressed my disgust to the manager today. He didn't care and barely speaks English. I will never go there again. You can't fool a born and bred New Yorker only the tourists. I now will go to a new Bagel Nosh 1 block away. Had a doctor's appointment in the area this morning and a lot of places weren't open to except for this. Its pretty much a tourist trap spot since it's surrounded by hotels. So I ordered a hot pastrami on a cinnamon raisin bagel. It wasn't bad but it wasn't worth $15 it was definitely a messy sandwich the meat slipped out multiple times and they don't give you napkins in the bag(Found out later it was behind me but was blocked by people). Pick-a-Bagel has been one of our main go-to delivery places for years, and it's always been delicious and delivered incredibly quickly. However, things started to go sideways a few months back when they began using the Relay delivery service -- FOUR of our orders were marked by the driver as "delivered", but never made it to our doormen, which means they were either delivered to the wrong address, or never delivered in the first place. Now, they've changed their online ordering format, with customization no longer an option. For instance, there is no longer a "Build Your Own Sandwich" category; composed bagel sandwiches no longer have options for toasting or scooping; and there aren't even "comment boxes" available to make written special requests. So, to get the Smoked Salmon sandwich the way I wanted it, I had to order a single bagel; the salmon by the pound; and the toppings -- onion, cream cheese -- separately as sides. Which resulted in it costing nearly $35, versus $19.95 as listed on the menu as a composed sandwich -- all because I couldn't request that the bagel be scooped and toasted, or for the tomato to be omitted! It's a baffling (and BAD) business decision, and we probably won't be ordering again unless Pick a Bagel becomes more customer-friendly and the ordering process user-friendly again. read more

"Tasty bagels near south end of Central Park" I'm no bagel connoisseur, and I'm not from NYC, so take what I say with that in mind. I came to NYC and challenged my local friend "take me somewhere for breakfast with good bagels, since I want to see why people rave about NYC bagels so much". She recommended this place as very good-- not the very best but solid, and we met here for breakfast at 7am on a Tuesday morning. There was lots of available seating, though people were coming and going the whole time we were there. I decided to go with something simple, since that'd be the safest comparison to bagels in other states: sesame bagel with veggie cream cheese. My friend got something with a seafood salad in it that looked really good. OK, New Yorkers, I believe you now. This was likely the best bagel I've had... perfectly soft (not "tough"), moist, and immensely flavorful. I don't think I'd be dreaming about it or anything, but I can see the appeal. The veggie cream cheese was also delightful-- they put a LOT, so grab a plastic knife to take a little off as you eat or else it'll be all over your face and hands. Service was great albeit a little non-intuitive exactly where to do what at the counter (though the signs helped). Bagel was perfectly toasted and came out quickly. And the restaurant was clean. I have only one trivial gripe about the setting-- there were ceiling fans with lights above them, and they made it so many of the tables were visibly "blinking" because of the fans spinning.
