Came here for dinner last week. Very quiet and there were plenty of tables open even though it isn't the biggest space. I ordered a quarter dark chicken with fries and fried cheese. So yummy! The sauces are great, one is a spicy Mayo based one and the other is a jalapeno one. They also have other salad and sandwich options and plenty of sides to choose from. Today was my first time in a long time having Pico Rojo. I'm just writing this review because I had forgotten just how good it is! Full Disclosure: I haven't tried a variety of their options. Once I had the chicken, yuca, and plaintains my life there was complete. I did venture out and get the quinoa instead of yuca when I'm trying to eat better. Today's meal was a full chicken and 4 sides for $27. The plaintains are nicely caramelized and perfectly sweet. The yucca is fried, but soft on the inside with the salt cooked on. Yum. The chicken is roasted and lightly seasoned and scrum-diddly-umptous. The quinoa is basically well cooked quinoa with nothing in it really. I usually put their green sauce on it to give it some type of flavor. Speaking of which, they give you small containers of sauce. One is spicy and green (my fav) the other is a kind of seasoned mayo which I think most people like. But I'm not a mayo person. Just purchase an extra set of sauce so you don't wish you had. The food was good nothing spectacular reminds me of a healthier Pollo Tropical. I really had an issue with their prices. Overpriced for the quantity of food especially Latin food. The lady who owns it is very attentive and caring but it seemed like business is slow and as a result prices need to be increased. The quarter chicken meal with two sides was $9 for dark meat and $11 for white. Super small chicken thigh (no drumstick) 4 pieces of delicious plantains and 4 stalks of asparagus. I wanted to love this local spot but it left me wanting more. My wife had the Rico sandwich and it only came with chicken, a few roasted peppers and a leaf of lettuce. Where is the tomato? Or anything else to elevate this $8/$9 sandwich (no sides included). You need to order twice what you normally would to get full. We won't be returning. read more

A friend and I shared a half chicken with sides, and let me say that this was the cleanest, most savory and delectable chicken I've had in a while. And the Tostones were PERFECTLY done, like family!!! I could have eaten a dozen. I highly recommend this place for a chicken experience. Missed a rotisserie spot for chicken since moving to Florida from NJ. I used to love the Mcwhorter Grill in the Ironbound in Newark, which was extremely poplar, tasty and a amazing bargain for really tasty churrascara... I came across yelp reviews for Pico Rojo which is actually a modest store front restaurant in a strip mall I came to before but preciously passed this place unnoticed... the claims of the other Yelpers were spot on! The rotisserie chicken was nicely seasoned and fresh and Juicy...the rice and beans and sweet plantains were delicious as well! This place was very disappointing and I am surprised the reviews are as good as they are. I am a hispanic person and I know good hispanic food, this is NOT it! It's over priced and the portions are tiny! That would have been okay if the food was good, but it was not. I spent $50 on 3 people and we were still hungry. There was no type of sauces to dip the dry fried yuca or the tostones. They charged and extra .25 cents for some sauce which ended up being honey mustard. Who serves honey mustard with yuca?! TLDR: Try all the sides! Can't go wrong with quarter white chicken with extra sauce! My favorite place for a to go lunch! The chicken is perfectly coal roasted and delicious! It is served with two sauces but I take a small amount of the green sauce and mix it into the yellow one! The green sauce alone has a bit of a bite to it! Ever side they have is delicious but, my favorites include the Tostadas, fried cheese and fried yuca! They aren't the healthiest options but, my tastebuds always thank me! The location is convenient, right off of McMullen & enterprise, tucked away behind the Walgreens. The restaurant itself is modest in size but, suitable for a lunch date for sure. And usually pretty quiet so you can enjoy a nice conversation with your guest. They also have a couple of little tables outside. One Word... FLAVOR! After my first bite, I literally bulldozed right through it. Besides everything being awesome on the plate , I was really surprised with the green beans. At first when I ordered and sat down I thought damn, I ordered greens beans. Blah! Why did I order those?! Sigh *eyeroll* They are usually a flavorless vegetable when served at a restaurant, but I was really trying to eat on the healthier side today. Well, as soon as I took a bite I was pleasantly surprised. They had a nice crisp to them still, with butter, garlic and sea salt sprinkled on top. I ate them one by one with my fingers:-) Loved them. Get them. The chicken, even though I ordered white, was so easy to pull apart soft, still moist and full of flavor. I even ate most of the skin, it was so good, and I never do that. Quinoa w/black beans is a nice healthier option, and YUCCA FRIES... LOVELY. Sweet plantains.. LOVELY.. TOSTONES.. LOVELY.. Everything was steaming hot, fresh. Love the sauces! The Green one has a nice kick, and the yellow one is creamy. I'd ask for 2 yellow, 1 green. I personally like to use a whole yellow one just for my Yucca, and the other for my chicken. This might just become one of my favorite places . I ate everything with my hands and it was not a pretty sight. I was so impressed about how great everything was that I forgot to wash them before I left, and I'm not even annoyed that they smell like a smokey rotisserie chicken right now . UPDATE: After eating here numerous times, the only thing I haven't been crazy about as a side is the rice & beans. Not the best side. I would not recommend it . I came last Sunday for a snack (a chicken breast with two sides) and I knew that I had to come back for a meal. I came back today for lunch and I had a half chicken with two sides and an empanada, this place is great!! The theme is Latin...more like South American style. The owner is Bolivian but she doesn't claim her restaurant as Bolivian, she says that her limited menu consists of dishes shared by many Latin American countries: Tasty marinated chicken rotisserie, Fried yucca, Plantains (sweet and green), fried cheese, Quinoa and beans, rice and beans, empanadas... and two sauces: the green and the yellow-ish, The green is hot (jalapeno based) and the yellow-ish is Mayo/Mustard, and you are supposed to alternate as your palate demands it. I like that they have the San Pellegrino sodas, I tried the Pomegranate/orange one...good! The place is very cozy with dark wood tables and the meal is served in a bigger than normal sized tray so you don't have to mix your leftover bones with the rest of your meal. if you're not into bone-type-food, there are a lot of vegetarian side dishes that can make an interesting meal. I would even say that this place could be a romantic spot with the good quality food, nice ambiance and cool music in the background. Holy Frijoles!!!! This place is the bee's knees. The cat's cradle. The whisper's ear. Tonight we walked up to Pablano's Mexican grill and realized it was a wide open sports bar look with an American server. I immediately walked out and drove around the corner to this little gem and let me tell you... it's no joke. Typical of my hungry and curious self I ordered way too much. The Half Chicken was juicy, brined amazingly well, and coated in a spice rub that can only be described as salty bliss. For my sides I ordered black beans and rice that were simple and the perfect balance to this whole dish. Next I had the Chicken Empenada. It was filled tight with chicken, olives, carrots, peas, and boiled eggs. Most Empenadas I've had are dried out by the time you get them... this wasn't. This was moist (yes the perversely sexual word used to describe sexual things), flavorful (also could be used), and left me screaming for more (ironically the empeneda was sex). Finally for my main course I had the Pico Rojo Sandwich. It looks kind of boring when presented, only bread, lettuce, roasted peppers, and some chicken, but it's one of those less is more type sandwiches. It was sweet, salty, and umami all at once and layered into the fluffiest bread I've tasted. The staff is incredibly friendly, the atmoshere is low key and comfortable, and the other customers were all raving about how much they love the food and how it's their favorite spot in Pinellas. So, I've been going here for many years now and realized I've never left them a review! One of my favorite things about this place is right when you step in the door you walk into this amazing smell of the wood charcoal they use to cook their chicken. The smell alone will sell you on their food. It's a very small and comfortable place. The couple running it are pretty much the nicest people ever and that's always a plus for me. I've been here for lunch by myself, with a group, lunch date, business meeting and laid back dinner. You order at the counter and to the left of that is the menu on the wall. I either order a quarter chicken or half. Here's a little special tip. If you are ordering the quarter white, for only about $1.50 extra you can get a half chicken. Now it always comes with two sides. They are all so good and I've pretty much tried them all. I always tell people if they haven't eaten here to try the yuca because they do it so well. It basically taste like lightly fried buttery mashed potato fries. Can't go wrong with that. Also you can eat very healthy here because they don't use butter and they have other sides that are healthy and gluten free. But the real star here is the chicken! It comes to you with crispy well seasoned skin and the chicken is so tender. They give you two sauces. One is simply chopped fresh jalapeño and the other is a house made sauce with a mayo base and seasoning. They tell you to mix them and dip your chicken in it. READ THIS IF YOU LOVE POLLO A LA BRASA: This chicken is a major disappointment. I don't know if people who've posted such glowing reviews are Hispanic and have actually had pollo a la brasa before. But I have had great pollo a la brasa, or Peruvian roast chicken, all over the world and the chicken at Pico Rojo is TASTELESS by comparison. If you have ever had El Pollo Rico, Pio Pio, Super Chicken, El Pollo Loco, or any of the other Latin grilled chicken chains in the US, this chicken will be tasteless to you. Even Pollo Tropical has better flavor than Pico Rojo. Here are the good things about Pico Rojo: The food is indeed fresh, the sides were pretty good (fried, yucca, plaintains, etc.) The bad things: It's extremely expensive for what you get (compared to other Latin chicken chains) The chicken, which is supposed to be THE specialty at a pollo a la brasa place, is tasteless and the skin is NOT crispy (which it's supposed to be) The sauces for dipping your chicken are as bland as the chicken; part of the deliciousness of Peruvian/Latin chicken is the accompanying sauces. El Pico Rojo fails with the sauces too. If you want great Peruvian chicken, Tampa Bay is lacking, I'm afraid. I think I would rather go to Pollo Tropical than this pace because at least the chicken there has FLAVOR (although it is very dry). If you want great grilled chicken (granted it's kebab, not Latin) with a great accompanying sauce, go to Petra in Tampa. read more

The best place to eat in Clearwater, Florida!!! I am not being hyperbolic at all. This place is a hidden gem! I no longer reside in Clearwater, but I can say, without a doubt, that Pico Rojo is the best place to eat in the area, hands down. EVERY SINGLE TIME I HAVE EATEN HERE IT HAS BEEN AMAZING! Let's start with the dining environment: quaint and sophisticated on a simple level. It makes you feel like you are in a mid-century modern latin american home. I know, that sounds odd, but that's just the feel. It is warm and inviting yet sophisticated. The staff that works there is amazing! I do not know the name of one of the ladies that works there, but she is always so warm and has the greatest smile and basically bends over backwards to cater to your every need. The food itself is simple yet full of fresh flavor. I find myself consistently ordering either the half roasted chicken or the chicken sandwich (with roasted red peppers). I highly recommend both. I have read other reviews and some people are commenting on the lack of flavor: I really don't know what they are referring to. I have eaten here no less than twenty times and the flavor is there, it is just super clean and fresh. Do not come here expecting overly seasoned KFC type chicken. The sides are also awesome: Steak friends (something about these friends...just fries...AMAZING, black beans, quinoa, Yucca, all delicious. Please go visit this business. A fairly new place in the Clearwater area this is a wonderful restaurant. The owner is Bolivian and it really comes through. Clearwater has a serious lacking of authentic Spanish places (especially compared to Tampa) and Pico Rojo is a welcome addition. The chicken is marinated over night and cooked over natural charcoal. I have NEVER had a piece of chicken as juicy as this was. We also had some fried cheese which was nice, steak fries, and yucca fries which were OUTSTANDING. The chicken is served with a combination of sauces which also really enhance the flavor. It has a nice pleasant atmosphere and the staff is very friendly. They serve 2 sauces with your meal that go well separately and mixed together, depending on what you're pairing them with. Let me explain. The fried yucca is lightly fried and tastes so good with the yellow sauce. I wish I could describe the sauce, but even with my self-proclaimed prolific food vocabulary, I can't... except maybe to say that it's like a creamy yogurt-y mildly curry-y tasting sauce that's not EXACTLY curry tasting. I don't know, you just have to try it. The chicken tastes best to me when I mix the yellow and green sauce together with it. The green sauce tastes like puréed spicy peppers and, well, it's pretty darned spicy. It is splendid on its own if you like it hot, but mixed with the yellow sauce, it becomes perfect heaven with the beautiful chicken. I mean, it's just OMG good! The fried sweet plantains are perfect on their own. The green beans are of the skinny French variety, covered in a garlic butter sauce and they are absolutely addictive because of the taste and perfect texture. Same goes for the asparagus. Freaking delicious! They also have rice and beans, salad with a house dressing of lemon juice and olive oil, both of which are also tasty. And then, there's the French fries. Oh man... These fries are steak fries- you know, the larger, flat kind- and they are fried to a crispy-outside-yet-tender-inside splendor. The consistent deliciousness of the food, blended with the humble welcoming character of the staff, and the simple yet tasteful decor wins this place a resounding 5 stars. This place feels like a local secret and delivers on taste and value! Their big sell point is the charcoal grilled chicken and it really is excellent. Most meal options are based on the chicken- whole chicken, white meat only, dark meat only. The sides are awesome as well. Black beans and quinoa and tostones are my favorite. Sometimes, we come in just for the sides, which could very easily be a whole meal. Their salads aren't my favorite as most of the combinations seem a little odd. I'd suggest sticking with the basics. I had a 1/4 chicken (white meat), yucca, and plantains, with flan for dessert! The chicken, being cooked rotisserie style, was most flavorful with a veganaise sauce and a jalapeno sauce on the side. Like Sunday at my Mothers house in Argentina where we would always pick up rotisserie chicken and sides -Latin style! The chicken here was well seasoned and moist, excellent yucca fries (which were as good as other reviewers mentioned) and asparagus. Nice place for a family lunch, friendly service and a clean quaint dining area. All the sides looked delicious! Next time I'm going to try the empanadas as an appetizer and the alfajores for dessert.
