So when I tell you that Pizzeria Romana, located right by the Lincoln Mall, is just like Papa Gino's dressed up for the prom, understand that I mean it as the highest compliment. This was a new stop this year on the Lord of the Pies circuit. We walked in with zero expectations. The space is warm without trying too hard. Black and white checkered tablecloths. Italian countryside murals on the walls. The staff greets you like they're happy you showed up, which is rarer than it should be. The cheese pizza is where this place reveals itself. Same Papa Gino's geometry: thin, sturdy, dependable. But elevated with ingredients that actually taste fantastic. The cheese blend brings provolone into the conversation, adding sharp, tangy notes that cut through the richness. Everything works. The crust has that holds its crispness on top, great chew in the middle, and just enough cornmeal texture underneath to remind you this thing came from a real oven. The pepperoni, though.
