I customized my tuna poke bowl and couldn't have been happier with Bowl Play and will definitely come back to try the others. The hall is sleek, open, clean & streamlined. First order was great so I ordered another set of entrees to go- seafood udon soup and chicken and shrimp fried rice. They made it for dine in and tried to hand me a box to package it up. I declined and the one who took the first order gave the entrees to another woman who was pissed, and who snatched the food. I had to watch to make sure she didn't do anything to my food. Pike Kitchen is a food hall with a good variety of asian foods. There are asian pastries, ice cream bubble tea, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese food, and bar food. I like their selection more than They Spot'. I am a fan of 'The Block' in Annandale more. We tried ordering online for pick up but the system was down. So we decided to order inside. The employees were wearing masks. The space was smaller than I had expected. There were plenty of diners inside and the tables were rather close. It was kind of hard to socially distance inside. Food was altogether ok. We order the spicy basil and soy garlic chicken, in addition to the spicy fries. The fries were a little disappointing. Chicken itself wasn't special. We also tried the teriyaki chicken from the the Korean venue and it reminded my husband of teriyaki chicken from the food court at the mall. A better dish was the pork katsu from the Japanese venue. It was lightly battered with panko bread crumbs and crispy on the outside. On the contrary, the onigiri from the same venue was not good. Overall, the ramen was flavorful and not too salty or heavy. Hope to try their sushi, hand rolls, and other menu items next time! Monster Snow&tea had so many interesting options! I ended up getting the hot Espresso Black Milk Tea with boba (50 cents extra for toppings). Since the hot drink lids didn't have an opening for the boba straws, I didn't try my drink with the straw until I got home and sadly, there was no boba! We also got the caramel taro milk tea which was really interesting, I've never seen that combo! Both of us ordered 50% sweetness level but the drinks were still pretty sweet. Wow! PK has so much to offer that it can be a bit overwhelming! My husband and I stopped by on a weeknight and spent the first 30 minutes walking around. We finally decided on Ramen, a Bibibop bowl, Monster Tea and the fried seaweed rolls (stuffed with noodles). Everything was delicious and there was even a kind woman working on clearing the tables so the place was spotless. I liked the pager system each vendors seem to be using and we even got to sample some buns and rolls (small pieces) from a bakery employee. I ordered the vegan broth for my ramen bowl, but it honestly tasted strange... I did enjoy the noodles, but had to pay extra for the only real topping, the Lava Egg. I was surprised that it was so pricey and didn't really come with any sort of additional toppings (meat or even extra veggies). My favorite item of the night would have had to be the $5 fried seaweed rolls, amazing!!! They didn't have any meat, either, but I loved the texture of those crispy rolls! Regular bibimbap and dolsot (stone pot) bibimbop= 4/5. Portion is great, taste is great, and the ingredients are fresh. My complaint is that they don't give you enough gochujang sauce to make it a proper bibimbop. They need to give more sauce. It is a joke how little they give you. As for the fried chicken, it was incredibly dry and overcooked as if it was fried over and overal again. I would give 0/ 5. For stir-fried spicy squid rice dish, this was great. I have no complaint 5/5 Takeout or delivery= 0/5 Portion size is significantly less when you order a takeout or delivery. I recommend dining in here. Bubble tea= 3/5 It tastes delicious but way too pricey. Gelato= 0/5 I don't know what this is. It has a texture of cold taffy. It is stretchy and chewy and just unpleasant taste and texture. Gross. Staying at the Childrens inn with my son at the NIH--we've travelled here from across the country because of my sons unique health condition. This place was one of the options for Tuesday lunch. Ordered fried rice through the Relish app since it had a place to put special instructions (I wouldn't order from a place that didn't because of sons egg and milk allergy). I type Dairy allergy no eggs! On the label with mine and my sons name it says my exact instructions: dairy allergy, no eggs! Pike kitchen is quick, mid food. There are different things to choose from like Thai, sushi, Vietnamese, Korean, pastries, or boba. It's a food hall, so it's like eating at a smaller scaled mall. If you're a sushi lover, you probably do not want to get the sushi here. It's not the best. The rice isn't standard sushi rice. The French fries are super good! Very crunchy and flavorful. The ranch fries just have too much seasoning, so I recommend the standard fries. The boa buns are very good. The bun is super soft. The sauce and veggies are fresh and go well. It's just kind of a hit or miss with the food. Some foods are really good, some are not the best. Overall, the food is 6.5/10 CONSIDERING the price. Placing fried food in a container without ventilation holes is a bad idea. However; I appreciated that a representative actually read my comments and that the actual restaurant had made changes. I decided to give it another chance and I'm glad I did. My food was SO good last night. Kuddos for the team at Viet for stepping up their packaging game. Everything came in it's own container and the sandwich was cut, wrapped separately and then in a container. I ordered fries from another restaurant inside Pike Kitchen and they also stepped up and got a box with ventilation holes leaving my fries nice and crispy. I'm sort of mad at myself that it took me this long to re order Pike Kitchen for delivery. Had I known they actually did everything they were going to do, I could have been enjoying it for months. I love this food hall. It's a weekly lunch pit stop. I've come to know the owner and staff and they are nice and accommodating. The food from every stall has been amazing and I'm sad to see some that have come and gone, like the original Bowl Play, but the pork spring rolls from the Vietnamese stall and the spicy pork kalguksu from Bowl Play are my mains. I wish they did more sushi specials, as the rolls can be pricey, but the other daily specials are worth a try, too. Ramen is more than decent, and the authentic dolsot stone pots are an experience. I know I gave this place 2-stars couple months ago but I must say, I've been ordering from them for a while now and regardless of one mishap, they're still pretty top notch in their variety of selections and consistent good quality foods AND bubble teas. Whenever they don't have tapioca bubbles, they make excellent substitutions based on what kind of drink you order, so for that alone, I give two thumbs up. First time coming here even thought my coworkers have been going since it first opened. I chose the Viet stand. I ordered the grilled pork with rice. It came with soup and a salad. The soup and salad wasn't that bad. The grilled pork didn't have much flavor. This meal usually tastes the same at any Vietnamese restaurant, but this would be an exception. My buddy and I heard a lot of great things about Pike Kitchen so we decided to check it out. To our surprise, it was a food hall with 5-6 locally owned and operated asian food spots. The variety included from Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese for both Poke and Ramen. We decided to check out the Bowl Play (Korean) and Japomen (Japanese). I would give Bowl Play a 4.5-5 Star rating for their all around excellent experience. The staff is extremely friendly and offers recommendations based on your taste preferences. I went with the basic bibimbap with spicy pork. It was everything I wanted because I literally picked out all the ingredients, toppings, and sauces. They top it off with a fried egg which is a great finishing touch. In terms of value and quality, Bowl Play is probably your best bet. I would give Japomen a 3-3.5 Star rating. Unfortunately, the customer service was not as good and fast. We ordered small finger items, Takoyaki, Pork Buns, and Onigiri. We waited over 20 minutes for the Takoyaki and Pork Buns. I would expect everything to be made to order having waited that long. The Takoyaki was tasty but tasted a few days old and frozen. The Pork Buns has pretty good flavor with the moist meat and sweet sauce. The Onigiri was a little hard to eat because it was hard to pull apart meaning it may have been a little old. I may have had a bad experience so very willing to give this place another try. Overall worth checking if you are in the area looking to satisfy a few cravings for asian food at the same time. read more

Much to our tremendous disappointment, three of our past 5 visits to Pike Kitchen have us seriously questioning its quality control. Five visits ago (12/18/2020), we ordered the Seafood Soon-du-bu, Jap-chae, and Jjam-ppong. The first two were fine, but the Jjam-ppong had a clam that was literally a ball of mud, which made me and my dining companion feel nauseous. From our own experiences preparing bivalves, we understand that this happens on occasion, but we unfortunately noticed a pattern of Pike Kitchen not discarding cooked-but-unopened clams and mussels from the final plating. Strike one for quality control. Four visits ago (12/23/2020), the Jap-chae featured cabbage that tasted like dirt--the first time among the many times we ordered this dish here and the first time in our lives that we noticed such a taste from cabbage. Fortunately, we began eating it in our car and discovered the problem before leaving for home. When we brought it to their attention, they remade it without the cabbage. While tasting inferior to their standard version with cabbage, it nonetheless eliminated the unpleasant taste of the problematic cabbage. While the problem was addressed, strike two for quality control. Three visits ago (12/30/2020), we ordered the Grilled Lemongrass Pork with Rice and Seafood Soon-dubu, and two visits ago (01/03/2021), we ordered the Seafood Soon-dubu. Both times, the food was fine, but we still avoided ordering Jjam-ppong for 3 weeks due to the mud ball-clam incident. Unfortunately, our last visit (01/08/2021) was really awful. We ordered 3 of our usual favorites: Grilled Lemongrass Pork with Rice, Jjam-ppong, and Seafood Soon-du-bu. The Pork seemed ready after a reasonable amount of time, but compared to all of our many previous visits, the Jjam-ppong and Soon-du-bu took far longer in duration--many orders after ours were completed before those two dishes eventually came out. As soon as we came home, we ate the cold Pork and the lukewarm Jjam-ppong, which tasted not as great as other times due to its lower temperature--even after we tempered the noodles with boiled water at home to release it from its blocked shape. We saved the Soon-du-bu to be enjoyed the next day--something we have done a myriad of times for over the past two decades from Korean restaurants including Pike Kitchen. However, the dish was so badly spoiled with a sour taste that we had to throw it away. Based on our own experiences with cooking in the kitchen and also with dining out, it appeared as though the silken tofu was not boiled correctly. Strike three for quality control. This is another Asian food hall in Rockville with better variety and upkeep than the Spot. Inside is a very lively scene that's crowded but not impossible to find a seat. All of the food stations have modern POS systems that take all kinds of digital payments including Apple Pay. The maintenance of the place is great, as there are workers constantly taking away finished plates and wiping down tables. After some deliberation due to indecisiveness, I decided to get the BP stone pot bibimbap from Bowl Play. I think the stone pot is worth the extra $ because it's more authentic and comes out sizzling hot so you get that nice crispy texture on the rice. I think the bibimbap could've used more flavor. Even with the sauce and gochujang, my taste buds wanted more. The bulgogi was tender and the egg was cooked nicely. My other family members had a bowl from Kogyro (Korean gyro), fried chicken from Pike Chicken, pho and a crispy pork belly appetizer from Viet. Everyone got what they wanted and enjoyed their decently-sized meals. For dessert, I opted for ice cream because I saw they had some unique flavors like lychee, mitsugaru, and charcoal. We awkwardly stood by the ice cream for a while and waited for someone to come over to the station. Eventually we went over to the register to ask if they were serving ice cream. The girl said yes and that we had to order there at the register so we did, but I wish we were told that while waiting in front of the ice cream. Intrigued by the color, I got "detox charcoal" in a cone and it was surprisingly really yummy. This is a popular, comfortable Asian food hall. I've been there twice. First time, I had the Bibibop, a Korean dish. Second time I had the seafood pho, which was from the Vietnamese counter. Both dishes were wonderful. I was also able to try others the first time, because I took my family of six there for a birthday celebration. Everything that I and my kids tried was delicious, fresh, and hot. Not surprising, my kids loved the gourmet donuts, and we ended up dropping about $30 at that counter. That bought a donuts, which, in my old-fashioned mind was expensive, but my kids said that the donuts were extraordinary, and totally worthwhile. I will definitely be back repeatedly. read more

The noodles were complete mush by the time it got to me and there was no tofu. The chicken sandwich and crab rangoons were delicious! The mochi doughnuts were very dense but great flavor and texture. I love taking friends who are visiting from out of town to Pike Kitchen! Although I've had both good and just okay experiences at Pike Kitchen -- I would say overall, it's one of my go to spots in Rockville! Freshness usually depends on the time and day you go, and how busy they are. Usually the busier, the fresher your food will be since they're constantly cooking. For example, the soy garlic chicken from PK Chicken and Beer is usually one of my go to's, but after having a couple of stale batches, it made me go for other dishes. I only get the soy garlic chicken during busier hours now, or when I expect they're frying up a newer batch. I also never tend to get pastries from the bakery anytime within one hour of closing, because I've had some extremely stale pastries. I'd recommend selling the pastries for 50% off once it hits the 30-minute to closing mark, because I definitely regretted spending full price on the pastry. At the very least, they could be given away as samples near the end of the day, so people can try new items for next time! I've had good experiences at the bakery, as well -- but definitely only recommend it to my friends when we visit early in the day. One of my favorite things about Pike Kitchen is the service is great at almost any of the restaurants you go to, and the food is usually served pretty fast! Pike kitchen has average asian eats at high prices, but the plus comes in having so many varieties in one place. I never come here by myself, but when with friends, there's something for everyone here. It has better and more options than The Spot food hall a few miles away. I've tried the chicken bites (great sauce, pretty small portion size), side kimchi (delicious but TINY), bulgogi stone pot (average taste), and pork banh mi (delicious). The pork banh mi is my go to, because it always comes with a small bowl of tomato and egg soup for ~$10 total. They put the pickled carrots, cilantro, jalapeños, sauce and meat all inside the sandwich, so specify if you want anything on the side. When we told the people working there of our concerns, they did not apologize, or do anything to rectify the situation. All they did was make excuses for their poor quality. I will list my opinions from each vendor: Pike Bakery/Monster Tea: -LOVEEE the mozzarella hot dogs, always a must when I stop by -the pastries are great, especially the cookies, so soft! -oreo milk tea is good but can be overpowering Bowl Play -bibimbap is the go-to here, ask for it in the stone pot! it makes it 10x better Japomen -takoyaki is sooo good -onigiri is also amazing and it comes wrapped like tradition onigiri that you would find in a 7-11 in Japan, super fun to unwrap! Bagan -havent tried it yet since it's a fairly new addition Viet -probably my favorite vendor, if i had to choose -crispy pork belly with rice is my weakness -any vermicelli dish is amazinggggg (especially lemongrass chicken) -their pho is decent -banh mi's can be hit or miss, sometimes the bread is soft, sometimes it's hard KStreet -my second favorite -tteokbokki is good and they give you a big portion for the small! -soondobu jjigae is my favorite korean soup and it is perfect here!! -tteokochi with ham is also very tasty -steamed mandu was not my favorite PK Chicken -the french fries are the best thing you could ever order (I have not tried the new flavored fries) -spicy basil and sweet sesame are my favorite chicken flavors -i am glad to see the chicken sandwich has been improved. before it was a ground chicken patty and it was honestly, a little unappetizing but now it's an actual chicken breast and it's on my list to try next! We got to try both the pho and dolsot bibimbap. We didn't love the pho as the broth wasn't super flavorful. However, we did love the dolsot bibimbap because of both the flavors and the warm experience of eating from the stone pot.
