A sleeper hit in SF for casual Thai eats and good, late night dessert options. I came here after a dinner expecting to just get desserts, but ended up ordering a few savory snacks for the table that ended up surprising us all. I got mango sticky rice and fried banana with ice cream, which were both very good. Warm, soft sticky rice, with sweet and salty coconut sauce, and ripe Thai mangoes. Good stuff. Banana egg rolls were crispy, soft, and decadent. The table had some skewers and crispy pork belly to share. It was good but what really took it home was the delicious tableside pickled thai chili peppers. They were spicy, salty, and so good. I wanted to buy a container to take home, they were perfect. I will be back to try their regular food menu just so I can douse it in their pickled peppers. Check it out! P.S., they are quite strict about last call. Luckily, they are open late, but I did watch them turn away a couple of tables at the end of the night, offering only takeout. I think this is fair. Closes at midnight every day, so we arrived at 9:30pm on a Thursday for the "toast box" which is essentially brick toast. Ordered the thai tea toast box and a fresh soju. The server gave us the soju first but then returned to tell us the bread had all "gone bad" so she would be unable to serve us ANY bread items.. which basically took the entire dessert menu besides bingsu off the list. Finished the ($13.99) soju and went somewhere else for dessert. Make sure you ask if they're able to make the toast box before sitting down just in case! Craving something light and sweet after the gluttony of House of Prime Rib. My friend found Ping Yang and we tried to walk off some calories along the way (kinda sketch btw....we didn't realize we were on the border of the TL). Empty at 8pm, they happily obliged our request to dine in. I loved my lychee and Thai tea bingsu, which was more than enough to share between two. The strawberry bingsu was just as delicious. The mango in the mango sticky rice was a very odd off-putting color, but it was sweet. Another friend got the strawberry crepe and was surprised the crepe itself was the red like a strawberry (probably red food coloring: kinda weird). Came across this place while looking for a restaurant open late on a Sunday evening and decided to check it out! I browsed through reviews mentioning the unideal area but most people seemed to rate it highly, and I figured the area can't be that bad, so I was sold Bussed over and arrived as a party of 2 a little after 9:30pm. As multiple reviews mentioned, this did not appear to be a popular place to dine-in for dinner (it was indeed empty when we arrived) and it seemed takeout was the more popular option. Sure enough, soon after arriving, someone came in to pickup a takeout order while we were looking at the menu. Decided to go with two chicken pad see ew's (one with a 1/5 spice level and the other with a 3/5 spice level) and a Thai iced tea. Enjoyed the Thai iced tea but was pretty disappointed about how bland the pad see ew was (we added soy sauce and that helped). However, they really did not hold back on the spice HAHA. I consider myself to have a mild tolerance for spice, but the 1/5 spice that I ordered felt more like a medium. My dining companion, who has a pretty high spice tolerance, was also breathing a bit heavily while eating the 3/5 spice. The Thai iced tea proved to be quite necessary for our meal in cooling down the spice but was not enough (I also ended up chugging a large glass of lemonade at home) The rating for this place is pretty high (currently at 4.3/5 stars), so I'm wondering if we ordered incorrectly or maybe the desserts are much better. However, since neither the trek to the restaurant nor the pad see ew were that enjoyable, I'm not sure I'd see myself coming back (at least not at night). read more

Great no-frills late-night dessert place! The restaurant was completely empty when we walked in on Friday night (think most people get take out), and we opted for the mango bingsoo. The food was better than I expecting. Coming from Sacramento, I was concerned it would be a miss but they proved me wrong. They are opened late and we arrived at 10 pm so kapoon was unavailable. Great food and service at a fair price (by SF standards); location is rough. They have a good amount of variety on the menu, without being so large as to cause confusion. Tom Kha soup was fantastic, as was their red curry, and mango and sticky rice. The interior was clean and welcoming, but they did have multiple TV's on with one of them on speaker, so be prepared to listen to advertisements and random tv shows with your meal. It's a sketchy neighborhood too, and you feel that standing just outside the restaurant. I would return for the high quality food. read more

After a failure of trying to get dinner in Japantown, we decided to come here after seeing the good reviews. We did not consider the location and found ourselves in the Tenderloin, but luckily it was not as sketchy as a couple blocks down. Food: The appetizer sampler was okay, and felt like they just fried an assortment of frozen items like French fries and spring rolls. The watermelon bingsoo was refreshing but a bit heavy like vanilla ice cream. The ice melted so fast and we were left with soupy watermelon. It was like "snow". Not the icy kind. It was sooo good. Moo Ping Set $14.99: Moo Ping = skewers that are grilled, and this tasted like pork. Had a good portion of fat to meat ratio. It was served with sticky rice and a tart like sauce which amplified the flavors. LOVED this dish. We asked of this could be redone to be less offensive or sent back for the non-crab order but were simply told "no refunds". Oh well. My family tried Ping Yang on a whim when we couldn't decide what to eat and were pleasantly surprised! This review is for takeout only. - Penang curry with chicken: the curry was soooo flavorful! You could taste all the different spices and the veggies (bamboo and bell peppers) were cooked well too. - Pineapple fried rice: I loved the sweetness of the pineapple balancing with the savory fried rice, and there were a decent amount of pineapple chunks too. My one complaint is that it's supposed to come with chicken and shrimp, but there was only one shrimp :( - Pad Thai with chicken: there was a good amount of chicken and fried tofu in here, though I felt the noodles were just a little bit over cooked. Their seasoning is a little sweeter than what I usually like, but the medium spice level I got helped balance the flavor. The price was a tad steep for the portion size ($50 total), but not terribly. If we had picked any of the "premium" proteins, I would've been much more unhappy with the price. But overall, we were all happy with how our food tastes and agreed we could order from here again. Had (Thai) dinner nearby and was feeling like Thai dessert next .. decided to swing by Ping Yang rather than have the usual Mango and sticky rice at the dinner place. Ping Yang specializes in Thai (NOT traditional) style desserts and they are open late (like Midnight most days)! Ordered the Strawberry Banana Crepe and it was amazing. I think it edges out Na-Ya (for those of you who know the Thai dessert scene in SF). First, the portion size works for 1 person whereas Na-Ya desserts (while just as decadently indulgently good) are just too much for one and are generally meant to be shared. Second, it's almost half the price of Na-Ya. Honestly, if I'm not in a group I would always pick Ping Yang. I think it just doesn't get the same traffic just because of the tenderloin location. Went on a weeknight, and luckily found parking across the street (free after 6pm). It was a slow night but people are missing out bc this place is underrated! The place was clean and the music selection was great! Menu options are extensive with authentic food and desserts options so it took a while for us to decide what to order. We ordered: Pad Ki Mao- wow! We ordered beef with mild spice and the level was right for me. I could taste the wok stir fry flavor and the noodles were chewy but not overcooked. The dish was well-seasoned without being too salty. Strawberry Crepe- huge crepe for dessert! Lots of chocolate syrup and whipped crème, a little too much whipped crème but it's just my preference. The texture of the crepe was soft and they don't skimp on the filling. Thai Crepe- first time trying this dessert and I liked how each crepe had a different filling. My fave was the red bean but the custard was good too. Similar consistency to the strawberry crepe but thicker. Not too sweet and had adequate filling for each one. Def recommend this place if you're looking for a two-in-one place with food and dessert! The portions were a great value for the price. Only thing was that the veggies in the dish were a bit plain. I really liked the purple yam toast. First time having a purple yam flavored toast. Soup was delicious, lots of veggies, they separated the noodles from the soup so it doesn't get soggy. For me, I like my soup with a bit more acid, so I added some lemon juice. But it was tasty enough without it. I also ordered the egg rolls. Very crispy shell! But the filling was disappointing. I miss the days when egg rolls were still made by hand at the restaurant and was like $3.50 for 4! lol now everyone purchases them premade/frozen. The filling turns to mush when it's pre frozen.
