I genuinely like ACE Hardware. They are kind of pricey so I use the coupons they mail me monthly so that helps. I used a 15% off coupon on $356 of Christmas Light decorations. I handed Tom the cashier the coupon and he rung me up. I thought the total was high so I checked my receipt at my car because the store was packed (Black Friday) and didn't want to hold up the line. Didn't see the 15% off anywhere on receipt. Went back inside but Tom had just left and a new cashier was dealing with pricing issue so I saw Lauren in the paint department. She said it's hard to tell if a discount has been applied so she tabulated the ticket to see if coupon was applied or not. No 15% off. She refunded the first charge and added 15% and recharded the same debit card. Next morning I have to pay some bills I'm short $356. I have 2 debits from ACE but no credit. So I called ACE and a lady informed me that it could take 3 to 7 business days to credit back the money. I can understand that for a credit purchase. I used debit. I said that doesn't sound right. No acknowledgement of my inconvenience just "Is there anything else I can help you with today" I felt like saying glad you & ACE Hardware will sleep well tonight. Thanks for the response Lauren. I appreciate your fast reply. I bumped the review up 2 star because of you. I appreciated the time you spent fixing the original problem. If I knew my debit card credit would take up to 7 day I would have used my Visa. Also, did Tom know the coupon didn't go thru? He could have fixed it. Lastly I wish I got the name of the lady I spoke to on the phone. Had she shown a ounce of empathy I would have just chalked it up as lesson learned on my end. Thanks again. read more

I shopped here to always try to keep local dollars in a local store. As much as I like this store and their helpful staff ... That ends today, as they don't honor a veteran's discount. Home Depot, Lowe's Advanced Automotive and Walmart all offer veterans discounts. Too bad too. I'll drive a little further to save a little on my purchases. read more

I went to get a gallon of paint mixed and let the employee know I get contractor pricing. Apparently I didnt look like a contractor to him and he told me that he wasnt going to give me contractor pricing. I continued to show him business cards etc. but he must have had a bug up his ass about something that day. He went so far as to tell me that he was no longer going to sell me the specially mixed paint and kept it behind the cash register. What a weido ! Last week I went in to get a plumbing part, and I was in and out of there within 5 minutes...you just can't get service like that at the big box stores. Imagine my surprise and horror when I learned that the pretty green lawn that I had so patiently cared for during the baking summer was going to take a winter vacation and turn brown. Dormant!? What the heck is that? Didn't I treat you right? Didn't I bake out in the hot sun tending to your needs? And to repay my efforts you will turn brown and icky!? Apparently here in AZ you need "winter grass". Huh? Unable to accept months of brown desolation in the back yard I headed off to Ace to see what I could do. No gardener for me! I am going to Do This Myself! This Ace location is great. Not too big, but not too small either and staffed by employees who are happy to help. Instead of being left to wander aimlessly, I was greeted at the door and escorted (not pointed to, or aimed at, but escorted!) directly to what I needed. Michael was extremely helpful in explaining the (foreign to me!) process for prepping for and planting winter grass. His recommendations were exactly what I was looking for and he didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need. He even carried everything to the register and loaded the bags of seed and compost into my car for me. Thanks!! I walked in with a part for my screen door in hand, the gentleman that greeted me asked if he could help me find something, I showed him the part and he said "I have that right back here," and then turned and retrieved the part for me. A few minutes later I was on my way back home to fix the door. It took longer to checkout (someone ahead of me with a return) and to get there and back than it did to find the part! I had a piece of threaded PVC that wouldn't come loose so I asked the helpful hardware man what to do. He sold me a $28 strap wrench to do the trick. I should have smelled a rat when it was non refundable. Got home and it was a worthless piece of sh!t, not holding a grip. I called the store and they held true to form by not giving a sht. That is what earns them a one star review, no "sorry", no offer of help, just a "so long sucker!" Caveat emptor! read more

The days of your local hardware store may be disappearing but this gem still remains in North Scottsdale. I'm sure they're probably a little more expensive then HD or Lowes but the service and experience of going to a mom and pop type shop is awesome. My all time favorite ace hardware store in AZ!! Every time I come in to this ace they find me exactly the right person who is the best in that department. Really means a lot when I have no clue how to repair a toilet and was going off a YouTube video on what I thought was possibly wrong with it. Even though I don't know much about repairs they made sure I was taken care of & found the correct flapper and toilet ring for my specific brand of toilet. You have a customer for life!! If I could give them zero stars I would. This is the absolutely worst run store of ever seen in my entire life. I went into get for locks rekeyed on a Saturday morning at 7:30 in the morning and they said we wouldn't have them available until Tuesday. I told him that was absolutely absurd. asked if the manager is there he said he was the manager I said this is a poor way to run a store. Saturday is the most popular day to do home repairs and you can't spend 20 min. to rekey a lock which you offer as a service. Always went there ffor every day items and alway had extremely nice well informed and professional people eager to assist you. I went in for some items and I needed a 12 inch piece of plastic tubing which was being sold for .29 cents a foot. By the display there was a box of scrap tubing, so I found a small piece approximately 12 inches. When I checked out I i explained to cashier that I found the piece in the scrap box and it was what I needed. She charged me 1.00 for it and I said it only sells for .29 and shE said that's what they get for scrap I paid and when I got outside I threw it away. She was rude and didn't care and didn't want to discuss .. NEVER AGAIN!!! read more

Today I was alerted that N95 masks were in and was able to secure one 5 weeks into this virus. Their staff to customer ratio was really high, maybe 10 employees right up front. It so nice to have a sore that you can go and get help in a second, without having to walk aisle after aisle. I went in there with a broken rubber band for my horse exerciser and said " I need this". It's great to have a local ACE hardware store much closer to where I live in Pinnacle Peak than Home Depot or Lowe's. I'll stop by if I just need a few items or forgot something. The sales help is friendly and usually knowledgeable... unlike the big boxes. OK...once or twice they've trailed me down the aisles... probably to help answer questions... but I almost felt like I should promise not to make off with any extra nuts or bolts! I'm glad to support a local, independent store and pay for the convenience... but the prices they need to charge do add up quickly (OK... reasonable but usually high if not on sale). If I need a shopping cart of items, the extra trip to Home Depot/Lowe's more than pays for the gas (even closing in on $4/GAL)! read more

I just walked out of this establishment after waiting almost 15 minutes for someone to come help me. I was looking for a chain for a dog tag and no less than two employees walk by or away when I inquired for help. One informed me that someone would be with me in a few moments but after 5 I decided to walk out. I think I would rather be ignored at the big stores such as Home Depot or Lowe's at least I can bring my dog there and wander around. I used to believe that shopping at the independently owned stores such as this was a benefit but I come to realize the more I go into this store which is just a mile from my home and convenient, the less I feel like patronizing them. read more

Spent $175 on Dunn Edwards Everest paint here. Long story short, their paint machine was calibrated improperly and the color was way off. Apparently the problem was that it did not add any yellow at all. Went back and they tried to fix it by adding color. Obviously that did not work and the color is still not right. Wasted many hours because of this, and they never once offered to compensate for their mistake. Threw everything instead of having to deal with them again. Buyer beware. Edit- Changed to 5 stars because they called to apologize and I realized this was probably an honest mistake. No hard feelings. read more

I was in your store on Saturday, March 9. Your employee Jason, assisted me with the issues we were experiencing in our home. One was plumbing and the other was securing a shelf which had pulled out of the sheetrock. He was so helpful, patient and very knowledgeable. He spent a great deal of time with me, explaining what parts we needed as well as how to install them. During my time with him he was also called for help in other areas. He remained calm, helping me before moving on to assist in other areas. He is an excellent representative of Ace Hardware. I was in awe of his abilities and his professionalism. They seem to be improving somewhat. But it had a very long way to go in that respect. They could take lessons from the carefree ACE, but so could all ACE stores. Some clerks are helpful, a couple of them are not so much. If you know what you want and can find it yourself, it is way more convenient than a big box. If you want lots of help and the best service, then go to Carefree ACE. This place works for me, now. read more

I bought a finishing sander that broke the 1st time I used it. When I tried to return it, I was told by the manager on duty "no returns or exchanges, you need to go through the manufacturer. Understandably, I was upset and shared my experience on Yelp. The store owner quickly reached out to me and explained there was a misunderstanding. While they don't take returns of power tools, they will accept exchanges for a identical item when something is defective. They apologized for the misunderstanding and put another one aside for me. As a veteran with an Ace Rewards card who has shopped at this particular Ace Hardware store dozens of times (literally) in the last few years I was extremely taken aback by the surly and accusatory tone and attitude of the person who identified himself as the owner. Having a cancelled appointment in the area, I decided to grab a cup of coffee from a shop around the corner and stop-in to Ace Hardware (what better way for a DIY homeowner to spend some time). Looking for nothing in particular since I wasn't there for a home repair I thought I might, perusing through the isles, find some gift ideas (albeit some for myself), when a man in an employee vest asked if he could see me outside for a moment. I complied with coffee in hand and asked if there was anything wrong. I was then asked "What are you doing in the store?" Not following where he was going with it initially since I hadn't done anything he furthered with "What were you up to in my store? I said shopping in which I informed him I already had placed a couple of items at the cashier's counter and asked said cashier if it would be okay to set those items aside while I continued to look around. She said that would be fine. The owner said " What are you really up to?" at which time I got the distinct feeling he was accusing me without wanting to say it "shoplifting". I asked him "What is it you think I was doing in your store?. He replied he didn't know but I was wasn't welcomed there and for me to stay away from his store. Home Depot here I come but never there again or any other Ace Hardware store. Terrible attitude and disservice to a Vet with a shredded Ace Rewards card. read more

This place gets one star because that's the least I can give them. I went in to this store to get two items, WD40 and HVAC coil cleaning spray. Neither item is unique and one would think that an employee of a hardware store would have at least a basic knowledge of each. WRONG! The kid behind the counter (he was probably 19 or 20) was lost when I asked about the HVAC cleaner and sent me on a wild goose chase throughout the store. He gets a pass because he's young, is probably Is just working the counter as a summer gig and I wouldn't expect him to know much about HVAC supplies. The real idiot was the old grouch sitting behind the paint desk. He sat his crab-a** back there drying paint samples. After my third trip around the store junior asked the clown behind the paint counter if he knew where the HVAC cleaner was. Crab-a** looks up at me like a chicken staring at a card trick and asks in an irritated tone, "what do you want?" To which I replyed, HVAC coil cleaner. Again, as if I was interrupting his paint drying, he says "what about it?" and for the third time I asked where I could find it. His response was "I don't know, try over by the filters" as he returned to his paint drying. Now that's what I think of when I hear John Madden talking about the "helpful hardware man". Do yourself a favor, avoid these jerk-offs and go the a real hardware store like lowes or home depot, read more

Had the worst experience tonight at Pinnacle Peak Ace. I purchased 4 gallons of paint (2 gallons tinted and two gallons of white primer). Although they offered to help me take them to the car I didn't want them to bother and we placed them in a cart. Their carts are 'pseudo' grocery carts and as I was rolling along in the parking lot one of the front wheels got caught in a crack..this sudden stop caused the two gallons on the lower shelf of the cart to slide off...causing the cart to become top heavy...and over it and I went! Two of the gallons of paint sprewed open and made a really good mess. The good news is that paint didn't get on any parked cars and I was not hurt (other than a bruised knee, shin, and elbow). Yes, it was a mess and spilled paint is not fun to clean up. I immediately went back into the store and asked for help explaining what happened. It took 5-10 minutes for someone to come out to help having to be called twice by the cashier. We gathered the paint cans putting them in a garbage bag and carried them back inside. The garbage bag did drip in a couple areas in the store and several of the employees immediately started cleaning those spots ignoring other customers. Then after another 5-10 minutes a couple more guys came out from the back and went to clean up the parking lot. Never even acknowledging me and or asking me what happened. I literally stood their while they cleaned paint from their clothes, hands....and the store floor. No one asked me is I was ok nor offered me a rag to wipe the paint from my hands, clothes, keys, etc. It was as I was not even there. After another 5-10 minutes I asked for a rag... Then the guy who originally help me with my paint did clean up the two unopened gallons of paint which I appreciated and asked if I wanted to replace the two cans that spilled open...I did. And while I waited still everyone seemed nervous ..the two men returned to the store having cleaned the spill in the parking lot... Never acknowledging me. It was such an uncomfortable environment every one seemed on edge. What was merely an accident was so mishandled by the staff, so rude. And yes I had to pay for the two replacement gallons of paint i.e.employee saying that I had to be charged per the store owner. As a customer I was made to feel like a criminal that I had done something horribly bad or wrong..wow. They made an uncomfortable and embarrassing situation even more uncomfortable. Convenient location yes, but I will never set foot in that store ever again. The big box stores would have ran to help me and probably discounted and or not even charged me for the replacement gallons of paint. The $$$ is not why I'm writing my first ever online review... I like to shop local and small stores but this experience left me in tears. It's the most unprofessional and uncomfortable atmosphere at Pinnacle Peak Ace.. So not sure how Pinnacle Peak Ace will stay in business. Customer experience -- the worst ever. read more

Personally, my favorite ACE Hardware in the city. It is in a great shopping plaza and the employees are all friendly and work together like a family. The store manager and the owners are dedicated and go to great lengths to maintain professionalism and help out the community in every way possible and it shows. More than any other ACE I've seen.
