    Chicken Shawarma Plate
    Justina B.

Honestly it pains me to write this, but this straight up wasn't good. Ordered chicken Shawarma plate. Chicken was bland and extremely dry (see pics), side salad wasn't that good either, and rice was bland as well. Staff was nice for sure. Maybe other people have gotten them on a good day, but my experience just was straight up not good.

    Shish and shawarma

The service and food were simply the best! The staff went above and beyond. The food is well marinated and delicious. Small place with big flavor.

    Greek salad $3.50 with combo

Unfortunately, nothing memorable about the food. I came here for lunch on a Monday. This place is called California Pita Grill, so not sure if there was a switch in owners. First time coming here, and probably last unfortunately. There are a lot of options here. I got the chicken pita wrap combo with Greek salad for an additional $3.50. Total came out to be about $12.50 which is not bad for lunch. The combo comes with a drink as well. The lunch portion size is enough to fill you up with just the wrap alone... but the chicken was extremely salty and sour. I should have gone to Doner G's instead. I took out most of the chicken because it was so salty. The Greek salad was okay, although it too was doused in sauce also. Better luck next time.

    Greek Salad was just horrible!

This was my second visit to Pita Grill Express and both times were just awful. For starters, they are not an authentic Greek restaurant and their food is just garbage. My Greek salad tasted soaky and like if it was made the day before. I literally tossed it in the garbage after just a few bites. The two side pieces of falafel tasted okay but also not great. Zero stars for horrible food.

    Chicken Kabab Pita

This place has gone way downhill. I haven't been here in months but it was one of my favorite Mediterranean places in OC. The wrap I got today was nothing like the one I had last time. Not only did they increase the price, but i feel like the portions shrunk. Not only that, but the wrap legitimately sucked. The chicken was so dry and they removed the fries and sauce that they used to put in. The cut on the pickled onions were so blocky and it was put together so haphazardly. Not sure if I just came on an off day but I don't know if I'll come back again. The one redeeming factor was the cashier was very nice and service was fast. I would have preferred to wait longer for better food though.

Gyro plate with tzatziki sauce and 2 falafel to go!

Love grabbing lunch here! The food is delicious each time I go. All of the staff are nice and friendly. The gentlemen that make and prepare the food are quick and ask what grilled meat people in line are going to order to ensure the lunch rush is smooth. The cashier is very sweet and kind. Plenty of tables to choose from if you decide to eat inside.

Chicken kabab plate... it was delicious.!!

As for the food, it's mostly very small plates that can be shared, but are small portions, unless you get the limited edition or shared plates. It can get pricey if you try the skewers and appetizers. We got the Bone Marrow Onigiri, Pickled Plate, Pork Belly Skewers, Hanger Steak Skewers, and Scallops, and everything was yummy. I will give this spot another shot and make sure to sit inside before I make up my mind.

I love their passion and enthusiasm, starting with their "freshest bread". The oven-to-plate brioche is a signature starter that reflects their values, their commitment to getting you the freshest food they can. The Greenest Salad goes so well with this, and all the veggies taste like they were just picked from the field. They procure many top-notch ingredients, and most of the preparation is simple so the food can speak for itself. My favorites from that night include the Mussels Croquetas which had beautiful bits of shellfish and a cream sauce that was to die for. They also made the first Paella I've ever liked, and their Lamb is the most delicious I've ever tasted. There is a dessert that I hope they never stop serving. The Kougin Amman ice cream sandwich is a genius pairing, especially because they just might make the best pastry in the world. I love the up close and personal approach, and the ingredients are incredible. A fun little splurge if you're in the area.

For dinner, we went with the $35 3-course Restaurant Week special. Appetizer, we did beef empanada and lumpia. Both came with a homemade sauce (chimichurri for the empanada and a sweet chili for the lumpia) that were divine. Main course, my partner did the Royale With Cheese (great name!). It came with a TON of fries and was a large burger too. Really big portion. I did the bacon wrapped meatloaf. I was hesitant, but I really liked it! It was not dry like I remember other meatloafs I've had in the past being. It was also a fairly large portion, came with Brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. Finally, dessert was served! Vanilla bread pudding. It was delicious! Our server offered us coffee with our dessert and ended up not charging us for if when the wait ended up being a bit longer than expected. She didn't have to do that, but we did appreciate her thoughtfulness with that! We saw they have live jazz on Wednesday nights, so we definitely want to return for that!

There didn't seem to be a dress code but people were mostly dressed nice. The service was phenomenal. We were greeted by the owner himself and he made sure that we were seated and comfortable and helped us understand the menu and their wine selection. Our server was amazing as well. She was very attentive in taking our order. For food I ordered the crab cakes, the shishito peppers, and the Atlantic salmon with the chimichurri sauce on the side. I substituted the mashed potatoes for French fries because I don't eat dairy. Everything was delicious and a little different. For the shishito peppers usually these are served with a tangy sauce and the shishito peppers are blistered. With this dish the shishito peppers were still blistered but they were served on a sweet mustard sauce. For the salmon that was also delicious, served with vegetables. The French fries were great. The crab cakes were pretty good. Now if you're from Maryland you are not going to like these crab cakes, of course, because you're from crab cake capital, but for California crab cakes they were good. We were greeted and seated upon entering by the establishment's owner, Ernest, and I immediately knew this was going to be a special meal. California Vintage Wine Bistro has perfect low lighting, a thoughtful setup, and pleasant vibe-setting tunes playing in the background, creating a wonderful ambiance. We enjoyed a red Zinfandel from Argentina to drink--the wine list is very diverse and features selections from across the globe, including a wine tasting offering. For our meal, we ordered the Burrata and Baby Heirloom Tomato Salad, Steak Au Poivre, and Pan Fried Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes. All of the dishes were excellent and featured high quality ingredients, but I would certainly order that steak again. The green peppercorn brandy sauce on it was absolutely excellent to go along with a well cooked, great piece of meat. We finished the meal with their house-baked chocolate cookies, which were dangerously buttery and delicious.
