It is unfortunate my wife and I arrived to this restaurant 30 minutes prior to closing. After walking for quite some distance off the beaten path to eat; the manager informed us the kitchen was closed and we could order take out. I am guessing from the closed kitchen. This means I would have to walk my food to another location when this one should still be open. I was then offered the most unapologetic apology in the history forced hospitality. So while the service was pleasantly, the food took extremely long to be prepared. My friend and I had pasta dishes that took nearly 45 minutes to arrive. I had the chicken parmigiana and I have honestly not had a blander dish of pasta at a restaurant. No seasoning, no salt, it was just honestly bland. I live in San Diego and this felt like a tourist trap kind of spot. I was so disappointed with their soup - it was way too salty and I could only stomach two bites before I dumped the rest. Blech. If my review was based on the soup alone, this would have been a 1 star review. But luckily, my husband's pizza saved the day. Was this the best pizza I've ever eaten? No. But it was a solid pie and had the nice combination of pineapple and jalapenos on it to give it both that sweet and spicy kick. This pizza spot located randomly on Congress St in Old Town looks like it doesn't get enough love. They boast the best pizza around so of course it stood out to me. I wandered in and said hi. I decided to sit outside on their big patio area in the back, it was nothing fancy but it was outdoors and they were piping Sinatra through the speakers. They have a good selection of beers and of course wine. The menu had lots of great stuff all over it but I was here for pizza. I decided to go with their famous Sigma Chi pizza. Thick cut carrots, broccoli, celery, along with sausage and pepperoni on my pizza? Does that work? Well I was about to find out. The gent looking after me was very attentive and checked on me often. The reason I decided to try this place was because there was a sign Posted in my hotel saying it was voted best pizza. Me being a pizza lover I had to try it out. We order pesto bread as an appetizer it was good the marinara sauce was absolutely amazing the bread was in the extra crispy side. I wanted a caprese salad but they were out of it for the day. So disappointing. We had a Margerita pizza and was flavorful no sauce just oil olive still really good. The dough is made there fresh. I did have side marinara for my pizza. The staff was friendly and on top of things. We didn't wait long at all we sat on the patio. It was located in downtown which is a nice area to hang out. Was in San Diego Old Town area and Yelp search pizza. Saw great reviews on this place so decided to give it a try. I did call first to find out about parking and lunch specials. The gentleman informed me that there was street parking and parking in the back of the establishment which is free if you at there. I ordered the lunch special: (2 )topping personal pizza with a drink. Ordered a side salad to go with my lunch. Expected salad to be just basic but was wrong! Included in the greens and shredded carrots was nice amount of tomatoes, olives, and a whole banana pepper. As for the pizza...VERY tasty! Very generous with the toppings, the sauce and cheese had just the right amount, and the crust was perfect...love my crust! The staff was absolutely wonderful!! Lou and Andrew was awesome with serving the food with perfect temperatures; salad and dressing cold and refreshing and pizza was hot. Lou was always paying attention to refilling my drink. We were about to leave Old Town without a meal as the other restaurants were closed when the owner saw our predicament and told us to have a seat and he would serve us himself. We gratefully accepted and he did just that. The food was outstanding authentic Italian. The ambiance was stellar. Frankie played soothingly in the background the whole time and we could see the Dodgers winning handedly. It was perfect.
