My husband and I came here thanks to the reviews on Yelp and I am really glad that we did! The restaurant is really easy to find, right off I-95 and next the train station. Since they are next to the train station - they have a train theme going. Pictures on the walls and decorations throughout the restaurant. The tables have red checked table clothes. It has a really nice decor. Plus - If you dine upstairs you can even see the trains arrive and depart. Their side salads also included a basket of their focaccia bread, which was a nice surprise. My husband really enjoyed his salad and mentioned that the salad dressing had a really good flavor, and the bread was really good. It was a good size basket of bread and by itself it's only $1.50. You get a good size portion for what you pay! What drew us in was the fact they have whole wheat crust, which my husband prefers. It was also no additional charge, unlike some restaurants so that was a bonus as well. However, there is only one size option, which is 12 inch. Might not be good for a large group, but just for a few people it's ideal. There are so many specialty pizza's that I was indecisive, and our waitress told me that we could do half/half even if one was red and one was white, which were the two I was going between! I did a half/half of 5 cheese and potato pizza. I've honestly never seen a better half/half pizza especially considering one half was white and one was red. Both sides were very flavorful and good! My husband ordered the clam pizza and really enjoyed his as well. We each had lunch for the day next. The pizza reheats really well in the oven. Service was very friendly, we never had our drinks empty. An added bonus for us was the fact they have Pepsi products. Mountain Dew and pizza is one of my favorite combinations. Awesome pizza place that's directly adjacent to the Old Saybrook Amtrak/Shoreline East station. They serve "individual" sized pizzas, but unless you have a monster appetite you should be able to eat twice off them. I had the buffalo chicken - which was not quite what I was used to - the pizza place by my house has ridiculously spicy buffalo chicken, since it has hot sauce base, this was white with a buttload (sorry, ha!) of gorgonzola cheese instead. The chicken had a nice kick, but it wasn't overpowering either. I liked it. A group of 5 of us turned up at 6ish on a Saturday and got right in. We sat upstairs with the model train layout, which was fine because all of us who went are train buffs anyway. I like how they maintain the railroad theme though considering it's in part of the old OSB depot. Service was plenty attentive, and prices were pretty reasonable. I wish I didn't live on the other side of the state so I could come more often! read more

The first time we came here, we ordered a mozzarella salad, side of marinara dipping sauce, and a pizza with bell peppers and chicken. The salad and marinara sauce was really good. The pizza was standard: not amazing, but solid. I do have to say the crust was super good. Service is also great here. The servers are super accommodating and the food came in right on time. Can we talk about how great this place is? I have been coming here for my entire life but when the pandemic hit last year we were bummed that our Pizzaworks in person trips came to a halt. Throughout the pandemic they have been here for us big time. We have been hitting them via take out pretty hard the last year. Consistent great Pies and really delicious pasta everytime. They never messed up one single order we had. Last night we decided to stop this madness and eat in. This was out first trip out to eat in over a year. It was absolutely fabulous. The place is rather whimsical and charming, and the customer service is very good. Our waitress Bridget was very kind and attentive. We would ask for her again. The menu is sprawling with all different varieties of pizza, including white and red. We opted for the chicken cacciatore, which is of course a red. It wasn't extremely substantial and was middle of the road in terms of flavor, but it hit the spot and was serviceable, just not remarkable. Our mozzarella salad was of a higher caliber, and we also enjoyed a a small basket of focaccia bread, which was on the level of the pizza - serviceable, not remarkable. I still think they warrant four stars since the atmosphere is unpretentious, fun and family friendly, and with beverage included our bill was about 34 dollars before we added the tip. Great service and consistently delicious pizzas and salads. We eat here about once a week and our food is always cooked perfectly. The waitstaff is never troubled by requests: red sauce, no garlic, extra crispy, etc. We don't have to ask for refills or extra napkins- they anticipate our requests. The salads are big. You can order a large salad (which comes with yummy bread!) and have leftovers. Even if you're a good eater like myself. The pizzas are smaller. My boyfriend regularly polishes off one all on his own. I can eat about half (again, yay for leftovers!). Beer selection is pretty good and I have no complaints about their house wines. I have been here two times and each time the food has been a solid 4. The pizza crust is on the thinner side, not to much sauce and the sauce is perfectly flavored. They are generous in the toppings too! I could easily eat one pizza which is a little bigger than a personal pan so if you are two people and eat more than 4 small slices each, I would order 2 pizzas and you could have some to take home. The place is always clean and they have a train that runs around the top. Very casual and they also have a great beer list as well! Must try if you are ok Saybrook and are craving a good pizza. I was in the area for a wedding and had to kill some time. Being unfamiliar with the town I just drove around looking for somewhere to eat. When I first saw Pizza Works I thought the name and sign were a bit cheesy (no pun intended) but saw that there were a lot of positive reviews on Yelp. To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised. The pizza is tasty and they offer a surprising amount of topping combinations, as well as a fantastic beer list which I was definitely not expecting. Subpar pizza. I'm not sure how this place stays in business when there are so many better pizza alternatives in Old Saybrook. In my opinion Alfornos, Paisan, Luigi, and Sal's all make a better pizza. I think Pizza Works remains popular for two reasons; it has a very centralized location (right next to the OS train station) and the novelty of their toy trains is a big hit with little kids. My pizza, although it wasn't Greek style pizza, in an odd way it reminded me of Greek style pizza. I don't know if it was the crust, the sauce, or the cheese, but something about it just wasn't right. I mean, the four pizzerias I mentioned above could probably compete with the big pizza powerhouses in New Haven. Pizza Works... not so much. I don't know if Pizza Place in Westerly is owned by the same owners. If not, then they have the uncanny coincidence of sharing the same exact logo. By the way, I'm not sure what that other guy's rant was about over mozzarella, but I guess some Yelpers will go to great lengths to get something for nothing. It's good to know some reviews are up for sale and can be bought. I'll keep that in mind in the future when I'm broke and am looking to receive a free pizza. read more

Straight up pizza assault. This pizza knocked me over! Literally, I took one bite and almost keeled over in the booth. SO GOOD. My favorite so far is the gorganzola pizza....a thin and airy style crust topped with just the right amount of savory gorg, roasted red and yellow peppers, and whole roasted cloves of sweet delicious garlic. The garlic makes the pie. So sweet and mellow, it compliments the pungent gorganzola perfectly. A definite must try for any cheese lover. Other high recommendations, seeing as I'm a pizza snob from hell, are the Rosie's special...bacon, fresh tomato, and mozz...the buffalo chicken pizza...buffalo chicken, gorganzola, roasted garlic, and some other yummy stuff....and also the plain cheese....like I said its plain cheese....and also the white pizza....its white...and cheesy. Good wine and its CHEAP....I think like 4-5 bucks a glass? Added bonus for the kid in all of us, there is a massive train set upstairs that goes around and around through this cool set up of mountains and stuff....dont judge. Pizza works is a restaurant dream that was born of the same owner as the Recovery Room, in New London, and the Pizza Works in Westerly. The food is consistently great across all three establishments, although they are now owned by different individual owners. The difference between this location and the others is twofold; the setting for the Old Saybrook Pizza Works is the old Amtrak station; it's old fashioned wood grain is fun and nostalgic, and the beer selection here is far better. I stared, open mouthed and happy as a clam, at the 3 glass coolers full of bottles. Great selection of local and import beers. The pizza is brilliant, and the bread and salads will leave you satisfied and cheerful. For 3 dollars, PW offers a foccacia bread basket and hot marinara sauce. I called to place an order for pick up Friday. When I ordered a large pizza I was told they only have one size. 12 inch. Immediately going into pizza panic mode, I decided to order two pies. Running out of pizza is never an option. My gf picked them up so I did not get to see inside. She said it was cute and very busy. One thing nobody has mentioned in their reviews is that it's expensive for what you get. The $16 large is a small everywhere else. They cut it into 8 but reality is it is 4 normal slice size, or two nyc size. Asked for chicken and ricotta on it and they said we had to choose mozzarella or ricotta, I pay extra for extra cheese every other pizza place , why they refuse to put two cheeses is beyond me. The chicken is diced and sparse and tastes like frozen bulk chicken in solution of salt then they added pepper when they cooked it. It did appear to be cooked when I bit into it despite appearances of under done (microwaved maybe) and rubbery texture. I am passing through this area and the place I wanted to go had already closed as it is Sunday. I'll keep driving hungry next time to whatever is down the road. Oh asked for paper plate to eat on and they said NO! Oh couldn't eat it , when I lifted a slice the front drooped soggily yet the edge was beyond crisp. Ok, disclaimer: I'm a train fan. And occasionally a hungry one. For the train people: It's in the Amtrak&SLE station building on the Northeast Corridor. The interior decor definitely goes along with that- mostly the work of railroad and maritime artist Steve Cryan. And there's a wonderfully detailed (and satirical) HO scale model railroad upstairs. Yes, if you're into trains, it's worth the wait to sit upstairs. The video screen of the tracks is nice, as is the unmistakable woosh and roar given the location. Ok, food stuff now: I really like gorgonzola. So I've been getting more or less the same thing every times for years. I'd visit this place regularly even if it wasn't in the station and with the railroad decor. The pizzas are all one size, so be prepared for that. This place is pretty hit or miss. I have been here no less than a dozen times and have had some really yummy pies and some less than stellar. Consistently good: the chopped salad. Their use of pasta in the salad is amaze- balls and I will def order this every time I come here. The BBQ Pizza is also a very solid choice and by far my fave pie on the menu. On the other hand, some of the other offerings are rather blah. Take the grilled veggie pizza. It was supposed to feature sun dried tomato pesto and grilled veggies. The "pesto" had literally no flavor, in fact I had to convince my sister it was even on the pizza. The veggies were def not grilled...just thrown on raw and cooked in the oven. The restaurant itself is also in need of some TLC. The table next to us was propped on a stack of dirty napkins to keep it level. They also feature a large sign when you enter prohibiting parties from bringing in cupcakes and cake "to prevent disturbing other patrons." Literally, the weirdest excuse I have ever read, I guess the manager is assuming I would be offended by a child eating a cupcake at their birthday party? Service, follows the theme of inconsistent. Pizza Works!!! Going to dinner at Pizza Works was a BIG DEAL when I was a kid. It's an awesome pizza place for kids that will provide the parents with tasty slices too. The best part is of course the trains!! Their train collection travels around the restaurant and will make any kid jealous. If you have kids, be sure to get a table upstairs! The downstairs is more low key (ie less little rascals shoving straws up their noses). As for the food...When I was a kid I still ate meat and I loooooved their sausage pie. That was at least 15 years ago. I went here again recently... 3 years ago and had a slice of cheese pizza and it was dang tasty... not DaVinci's, Sally's or Modern... but it's a fun place to go and eat pizza with a bunch of people.
