This is an old favourite of ours, with many visits over the years. Pizza Works is immediately adjacent to the railroad station in Old Saybrook, CT, and it continues that theme with miniature railroad sets in the restaurant. We always check the sets out to see if there has been anything new added. The focus of the menu is, of course, is on the hand-made pizza, but there are also very nice salads that start off the meal well. We split a large garden salad which was made even better with a fresh oil and vinegar dressing. The pizzas we ordered this night were a split of clam and bacon, and a specially ordered pizza for Justin, the 12 year old, who wanted his own toppings, including black olives and plenty of mozzarella. The secret to any pizza is the crust, and these crusts were well made, thin, and crusty. They made the entire pizza toppings taste better, as a solid foundation. The toppings were all fresh, and very delicious. We devoured the two pizzas, 16 slices, in less than a half hour. All is all, it was a satisfactory meal, and one that we really enjoyed. My son lives for visits to Pizza Works! It is a great place to bring your kids, has terrific pizza and salads that will convert you to a veggie lover! Only TOP quality ingredients in pizza and salads (have never tried pasta or desserts). Only issues are that it can get really noisy (all the kids) and that service can be inconsistent (depending on night and which server you get). We have gone there maybe 25-30 times and will continue to go there and recommend Pizza Works to friends. read more

Pizza works in beautiful OldSaybrook CT is a diamond in the rough!! Directly next to Old Saybrook's Amtrack train station is this spectacular place!! First of all they have more beers then Irish pubs Ive been too in the recent past!! It's pretty cool when you hear a train go by. But most importantly the food is wonderful and so do fresh!!! We started with the Gorgonzola salad, WOW!! But being a pizza restaurant I have a rule. Anytime I'm having pizza somewhere for the first time I always have Pepperoni, Hamburg and sometime green peppers too! This pizza was wonderful. Slightly larger than personal-sized pizzas, with well-toasted thin but not too thin crusts and plenty of choice amongst the typical and not so typical toppings. And beer. Lots and lots of beer. A bit light on the craft beer selection, it would be nice if they carried more beers you've never heard of, but still more than acceptable. The kicker is that you can take the kids and sit upstairs, and let the kids see the trains while you have some adult conversation. The trains, they're pretty impressive. For the kids. I'm not much of a model train guy, I don't see the attraction for adults, but the kids sure do love them. If you like trains and pizza, this is the place for you. the sign says "Pies and Suds" Really not a bad pizza but the highlight here is the trains for the kids, and the beers for the parents. Trains - they have a train running around the downstairs room (well, it wasnt running when we were there but i assume it does sometimes?) - and upstairs they have two big HO train setups with tracks connecting them and trains running between .. kinda cool if you like trains. On the main floor they have all sorts of train models in display cases. The restaurant is right on the train tracks and when one goes by the whole building shakes. Beers - it looked like they had 50 kinds of bottled beer here (not sure if they even had tap beer..) the pizza is thin and crisp but not too dry, the tomato sauce and crust had too much herbyness going on - i had spices in my teeth after eating a slice. cheese was good, and the toppings seemed fresh. family friendly pizza .. our group went here after going to essex to see trains, a nice end to the train trip. read more

I love this place. They have great varieties of pizzas, all of which are delicious. Try the tex-mex pizza! The beer selection is tremendous for a place this size. The atmosphere is cool with all the train sets running around and the elaborate sets upstairs. The fococcia bread is amazing and very cheap, definitely a great appetizer. Stopped in for lunch this afternoon with a friend and our kids. I read some reviews here on Yelp before suggesting it to my friend, and since it had high reviews, we decided to try it out. SOOO-O-O glad we did! We ordered the "The Works", which is a red pizza consisting of mozzarella, sausage, meatballs, pepperoni, onions, mushrooms, and peppers. This pizza was phenomenal! I've lived in Groton for about 5 years now and have tried most of the pizza joints in my area. This was by far the best pizza I have ever tasted in this area. It was absolutely delicious. We also ordered the "wheel of foccacia" appetizer to split between the four of us, which was also very very delicious. It came with sauce, but you didn't really need it. The bread was absolutely wonderful on it's own. The service was friendly, prompt, attentive (but didn't feel overly suffocating, which can easily kill a visit for me) They weren't very busy when we stopped by, but I imagine this place would be packed come the weekend. It's just too good NOT to be packed. I didn't try any of the beers, as I was driving and couldn't really indulge. ;) However, when I come back with my husband (which I most definitely will), I will certainly try a couple out--their selection is huge. It's very kid friendly, with an upstairs filled with model trains, and ample seating and booths. It's right next to the train tracks, so a train will pass by a couple times during your visit---but since this restaurant boasts a train theme, it's more of an asset than a distraction. It added to the charm, IMO. I can't wait to come back and try something else from their menu. This is, hands down, my new favorite pizza place in Southeastern CT! read more

Not worth it. Pizza had a weird fish taste. Kids meal came out last (pasta). Asked for a piece of bread for daughter, paid for focaccia (that wasn't good/super dry/no flavor). The food here was meh. I'm not a huge fan of crunchy-crust pizza, and knew that going in, but this crust was just burnt. The pizza was also very oily. Otherwise the toppings were pretty good. Enjoyable train themed atmosphere with model trains upstairs and a tv to watch the trains at the station platform. It is entertaining for kids, but there isn't enough space for really small children to roam since the displays are by walkways and tables. My family and I have tried a variety of pizzas and salads and have enjoyed them all. The only one that wasn't a hit was a chicken with rosemary. The pizzas are not full size, so it will take more than one to feed a family. It is on the pricey end for pizza, but tastes good. read more

They use to have the best crust in the town very crisp and crunchy the way fire brick should be. Unfortunately the last two times we ordered out the crust was limp and soggy like everyone else's. We were one of only three tables on the lower level when we got there. Then, a train came in and so did the people. Our waitress was busy but chatted with locals and people she knew for literally 15 minutes. We needed plates.....had to actually go get them ourselves because she was ignoring everyone but three tables. We waited 30 minutes for her to bring us a box and the check, all while half the tables that came in after us had left, including the two with lots of kids!! I doubt I'll ever be back. My group ordered BBQ chicken, 3 cheese, and margarita pizzas. The 3 cheese was horrible. I sent it back and I rarely do that. Overcooked, excessively oily, and tasted like a mouthful of nothing but gorgonzola. The margarita was tasteless but I ate it since I was hungry. I did not try the BBQ chicken. The waitress wasn't the best either. Impossible to flag down and when I sent my pizza back she didn't even ask if I wanted to order anything else which I found extremely odd, and then returned to the table to say the menu description of the 3 cheese is deceiving and should say it's mostly gorgonzola. Great pizza, great subs and appetizers. Really a nice place atmosphere wise. However, I ordered spaghetti last night. Basically a half pound of over cooked pasta, served with a mini scoop of bland and tasteless sauce. For $15.00 it is a ripoff. Threw the entire meal in the garbage. If I wanted Ragu sauce, I could have made three times as much for $4.00. I don't like Ragu and I am extremely disappointed with Pizza Works pasta dishes. They are horrible. But the pizza is so good I will continue to go there. I won't be ordering anything other than pizza again. Stay away from the Entrées unless you like a flavorless overcooked version of that particular dish. Yuck! Best mozzarella salad EVER! I can never finish the salad it's so wonderfully large; Comes with Focaccia. Have had their amazing sausage pizza and regular salad with a side of yummy meatballs as well. Atmosphere is great. Kids will love the movement of the trains near the ceiling line. There's a quaint enclosed set up with a station where the kids can leave their chairs to watch. During the summer they have outdoor seating. Ample parking, staff is very friendly. If you're passing through, I truly recommend you stop even if it's for take out. read more

I cannot even speak to the pizza because after getting here at 7:50 pm and being seated two tables away from a large group (10 or so) of well behaved teenagers who had two servers bringing their 6 pizzas and two pitchers of soda, we ended up walking out without ordering. At almost 8:30 pm, despite multiple servers having walked back and forth by and seeing our menus down on the table, no one bothered to stop and take our order. The most unhelpful young man answer the phone and told me that was just not possible, they do not take reservations, plus they had a long waiting line. So we got here and it was no waiting line and plenty of tables available so it appears the young man answering the phone is just an in corporative pain in the butt. I always have very good service and good food at pizza works. I would suggest the man that answers the phone get a free trip to Dale Carnegie course! Not helpful and unfriendly. Visited for the first time in about 15 years (I've moved away from this area), and the pizza is still solid. We came slightly early for Sunday lunch with my parents and my small children, and we had our pick of tables. We chose to go upstairs and there's a larger table in the back corner tucked right into the model train exhibit, which our children enjoyed. Our waitress was super friendly. My wife and I enjoyed the red potato pizza that brought back memories of the same stellar pie at Willington Pizza during our time at UConn. Pizza Work's is just as good. I went to Pizza Works for the first time with a friend of mine in the beginning of July. The service was great, maybe because of how few guests there was. I ordered the sausage and peppers pizza and my friend got the pizza with potatoes, both were great. In a city like Old Saybrook it's difficult to compete with all the other pizza restaurants around.
