Came here to meet a friend, found a spot to sit while i waited for my friend for about 10 minutes, a female worker with short light brown hair with colored dyed hair came to me and pretty much told me i need to buy something or get out. It was pretty clear they were making assumptions about us and treating us differently because of it. I just wanted a simple coffee, not a side of judgment. Play in Dt Orange can be a hit or miss. Staff are meh, theres a couple baristas who could care less about greeting people and help with their menu. Coffee is okay. Plenty of options. Price is on the heftier side. Their shakerato & Turkish latte is too sweet! Cappuccinos and lattes are decent. Always crowded with laptop/wifi hoarders. Pastries are good in the am. Sometimes hard to find a table even with the abundance of space. Beautiful big space with 7 Eleven restrooms! Bad. Parking in front of shop is complicated but plenty right behind building. The one star rating is specifically for the active tipping request when paying with a card. I am not a tightwad but to guilt us to tip starting 20% for a to go order (meaning staying in line for coffee and picking up at the counter.) I did tip two dollars for a 7 dollar lavender latte. Yes there is an option for no tipping. Who would exercise such option? It is a matter of principle. It was my first time here and was excited to support what appears to be an independent establishment. The drink was decent but not as nice as Blk Dot near by. Definitely not returning given with the mixed up of name on the order. No names of the person or the type of drink. Loveeee play coffee!!!! This location is in an old bank and it's really nice to study in. There's plenty of seating and outlets at every seat which is really convenient. Make sure to bring headphones because it does get very echo-y. My favorite drinks are the matcha maple latte and the vanilla latte - and they don't charge for alternative milk! Was there with family as the only non coffee drinker, so l went for the Hot Chocolate, which was nowhere near Hot nor Chocolate. It was lukewarm passed the foam and could taste the City water thru the thin veneer of Nestles. And all served with attitude. Forgot I was in Orange for a moment. read more

I'm not big on buying coffee out as I usually prefer to make a home made French press. However , at the recent City of Orange May Day parade, I told my husband I was going to get a coffee at Play (I drank tea that morning for the coronation. ) On a whim, I ordered an iced latte. It was delicious. Seriously. The coffee flavor is complex and interesting. No raw, bitter aftertaste. I let my husband try it. Didn't say a word. I just handed it to him. He's super picky and likes strong coffee. He said sipped it and said, That is the best coffee I've had in a while. Then he kept taking sips. So we will be back to try other offerings. read more

We are so glad to finally have a speciality coffee shop in the circle! My husband and I have been living in Orange for the last three years and we are beyond excited that we are a 10 minute walk from some really good coffee. We've been twice now and both experiences have been great. The second time we went we got to chat with the owner while he was making the previous order of drinks and we came to learn about the relationships they have with all the coffee roasters that they partner with. It was so cool to hear. The place is nice and big. I usually gravitate towards a shop that invites you in to come and stay for a bit. Play has a more modern feel than a cozy feel! But the amazing coffee and baristas there matter much more to us than the ambience. We're excited to visit again soon! read more

Service is way better than a lot of other coffee shops in the area-- the baristas are really nice! Which sadly, is rare these days. My friend bought a bag of coffee and she got a free drink token because they forgot about her order. Pretty dark and sterile inside, maybe they'll add some more personality? To be fair, it seems like a new business. Went to the restroom and it looked like it hadn't been serviced or cleaned in weeks. Dust everywhere, no paper towels or soap or toilet paper and one of the toilets was plugged up. Hopefully things will improve as time goes on! read more

After being bummed for a while that Portola moved out of Provisions in downtown Orange, Play Coffee is cheering me up! I love having a solid option for iced espresso drinks in my main hangout spots, and I was feeling the lack in DTO until Play Coffee moved into an old bank (a very creative use of the space, and the ceiling is beautiful). I've tried the shaken maple latte and volcano latte, both iced and easy on the sweetness, and the volcano latte is the one I keep re-ordering! It's a unique, buttery mix of salty and sweet, and the espresso is quality and smooth, although I'd recommend adding a shot to those who want a punchier espresso taste in their latte. I also really appreciate the good amount of seating, the customer restrooms, and the designated parking spaces for Play Coffee behind the building. For those who need cushioned chairs, I advise bringing something to cushion with you, as there aren't any seats with padding. Great place to study in! Beautiful interior with high ceilings, and there's many outlets. I got the volcano latte and was not sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was a very yummy latte. The workers were very friendly and answered all of my questions. Parked in the back in the 'Play' coffee spot and got a parking ticket, but I brought the ticket in and the workers helped take care of it. Will be back again! read more
