The fries on the side were crispy and not dry. It was a hearty burger. There's a secret menu on top of the already large menu. The restroom is spacious and large but it is only one single stall. There was usually a wait for the restroom so be on the lookout for your opening. Our server with the red hair was great. Second time is a charm or is it the third time?? First time here wasn't a charm and wife decided to give it a second shot. Walked in and overheard manger apologizing to a couple for something and taking something off their bill not a great start. Wife ordered hot water and cup came out dirty. They have a good number of choices for food. I would say their prices are pricey but in April 2024 what isn't pricey. I ordered avocado toast for 20 and wife got pancakes and eggs. My husband and I went in for lunch today. I noticed the menu changed and it said, "PLUMS POTATOES CONTAIN PORK." As a Jew and a vegetarian I was horrified. I asked the server how old the menus were. He said they were newer, about 6 months old. I then asked him if that they had always had pork in the potatoes. He went back and asked and they said for 30 years they have cooked the potatoes in bacon fat. I was shocked. I've been eating at Plums since the early 2000s. We stayed and I ordered the eggs benedict without meat and substituted tomatoes and had tomatoes on the side to avoid potatoes with bacon fat. Midway through my meal I cut a piece of egg and baguette to find a sizable piece of bacon. I was upset given the whole conversation with the server earlier. Our server did not notice both my husband and I raising our hands. Another server noticed but only came after he saw me take a picture of my plate. He was quick to dismiss it until I asked him to smell it and he confirmed it was indeed bacon. He took my plate, removed it from the check and gave us a $20 off card for a future visit. We will not be returning. I am aware food is cooked on a shared grill, but using bacon fat without disclosing this to patrons for decades is not okay. I really did not like the food we ordered at Plums Cafe. The restaurant was beautiful and crowded this Thursday afternoon. We made reservations on OpenTable, which was super easy. The reviews there and on Yelp were good and I expected our dining experience to be the same. We got off on the right foot when we arrived at checkin at the restaurant. Camille was her name and she noticed I was wearing a Sacramento Kings sweatshirt and mentioned that she was from Sacramento too. She was super friendly and perfect as the host. We were seated quickly and given water and menus. TBH, we were there for their popular DutchBaby we saw in the photos on Yelp. Most of these photos has mixed berries in them, but the menu item didn't include berries, so please make note of the extra charge for the added fruit. My wife ordered the DutchBaby with added mixed berries and I ordered the Chicken and Waffles. The waiter serving us was raving about the restaurant's own waffle batter recipe, so I had to try it. Let me break it down like this: PLUMS FAMOUS DUTCH BABY - added Mixed Berries The menu reads, "A baked, deep dish pancake, butter, powdered sugar & lemon." It also comes with Maple Syrup. This was big and covered the entire plate and looked incredible. It was crispy, flaky, warm and had a wonderful texture. The added mixed berries were tart and in excellent contrast to the maple syrup. Overall, this was good but, in my book, not extraordinary. It was lacking something that would make this dish "famous", in their words. One thing my wife did to improve it, was to mix the powdered sugar and juice from the lemons to make a glaze. That made it more special and definitely tasted better, but still couldn't finish it because it was so big. Probably wouldn't order that again. HOT HONEY CHICKEN & WAFFLES The menu reads, "Fried chicken lollipops served with a perfectly golden waffle, paired with hot honey & country turkey sausage gravy." This was 50% failure and I instantly regretted ordering this. Plums makes their own batter and the waffle was good, but not great, and an equivelent could be found almost anywhere. The chicken lollipops were terrible. They were overcooked and lacked any flavor. No, my tastebuds are not broken. Nothing could help these chicken drums. I dipped them in the hot honey, the country turkey sausage gravy and even my wife's maple syrup! Nothing I could to to revitalize the moisture that were cooked out of them. You do know how hard it is to overcook chicken legs, right? Anyway, I ate the waffle and some of my wife's meal. Those berries were good, if I forgot to mention. Let's just say I would not order this if I ever return . I'm not going to say I wouldn't come back entirely, because it appears that Plums was voted Best Brunch Spot in OC by OpenTable this year, 2025. But by the experience we had, I have to wonder what other patrons are ordering. read more

Went for Friday lunch and it was a very busy lunch. I was shown to my seat immediately and then the place got busy. I was able to order a mocktail immediately while waiting for my party. My drink came about 10 minutes later, while the drink orders for my party were placed and filled. The dinning room was clean and spacious. As it was a busy time after getting drinks it took a long time to place my order. My Brie blackberry, jam and bacon sandwich was awesome!!!!!! I ordered potatoes on the side but didn't care for them. My friend got their signature Dutch baby. I've had Dutch babies at other places before and I didn't care for this version. My friend didn't care for it either. For six dollars extra you could get berries added to it, and that probably would improve the flavor considerably, but my friend ordered it the traditional way with lemon n powdered sugar. There were so many comfort dishes that seemed tempting and I think I would be wanting to come back to try some of those other dishes. There's a lot of good brunch places in Costa Mesa but nothing is quite like Plums. I've visited Plums on several occasions and every time it's pretty delicious. Seating is available inside or on the patio. The lattes are delicious here and so are all of their brunch items. Today I tried the Vietnamese Pork & Egg Bowl. It had a ton of flavors and a lot of meat on it. I'm just not sure I loved the quality of the meat, but other than that it was quite tasty and the portion was huge. My bf and I came and ordered one sweet dish (berry waffle) and one savory (Santa Fe eggs Benedict). The portions were large and the food was delicious. The waffle came with homemade whipped cream that was superrrrr sweet. Definitely did not have to use the syrup and just ate it with the cream. I came here for a birthday brunch over the weekend. We ordered a variety of food and drinks. I got the Danish Baby and Iced Vanilla Latte. The Vanilla Latte was very delicious and came out pretty fast along with my friend's drinks. They ordered some cocktails and all of them looked so pretty. The Danish Baby was HUGE and I got it with berries. You can also get it with bacon if you want it to be more savory but the berries were so fresh and sweet. It was $20 for the massive portion and my latte was $7. My friends said their food and drinks were good too! Service could've been better but I understand since it was a weekend and it was busy. It took a while to get anyone to get our check at the end and refill waters or anything. We sat there for a good amount of time and the seating outside is a bit close. I would highly recommend doing reservations before coming. Parking can also be difficult because the lot can fill up if it's during peak hours. I was able to get a reservation the day before for 12pm. When we arrived, it was packed. The hostess told us we were early (we arrived at 11:47) so we had to wait about 10 mins. The parking lot gets crowded too but there's plenty of spaces. The restaurant is pretty small with a lot of tables inside and outdoors. It can be a little noisy but not too bad. I got the french dip sandwich with the gathered green salad. The salad is so good, I wish it was a bigger portion. The sandwich was decent. The espresso martini was good. My first visit here was about a year ago and we ordered their famous Dutch Baby Pancake. In all honesty, it was not worth getting since the berries, lemon sauce, and everything made the pancake center soggy and unappetizing - if you plan on ordering this at least have everything on the side. We didn't know this dish takes around 30 minutes but it came out quicker. I decided to give this place another try and my second visit was on a Monday around noon. We made a reservation but it wasn't busy - we opted to sit indoors because it was chilly but the vibes were so different compared to outdoor seating, and I would suggest that outdoors are more lively for groups whereas indoor dining is extremely quiet with the music at low volume. We ordered the Berry Waffle & Flat Iron Steak w/ scrambled eggs (also served with toast). We also ordered two sides of sausages ($4 each) but never received it so we just chose to void it. Our server did ask if we wanted the berries and cream on the side for the waffle, but I declined because I wanted the presentation to look nice for the photo. Yet again I made the same mistake I did one year ago so regardless of presentation, just opt to have everything on the side because they serve the waffles with a big scoop of cream on top along with the berries which mare the entirety soggy. As for the steak, we asked for it to be cooked medium rare but it came out well-done and tough to eat. You also can't go wrong with cooking eggs but apparently you can because the scrambled eggs themselves were overcooked and dry. Dutch Baby 8.85/10- this baked deep dish pancake was seriously so good! The outer edge was nice and crispy but I absolutely loved the interior which was super soft and buttery - so much more moist and flavorful than the edges. They gave us fresh strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries which were the perfect complement to balance out the butteryness. I loved how it came out piping hot so the butter just melted right into it. Dungeness Crab Omelette 9.75/10- this was absolutely incredible! The hollandaise sauce was so fresh and creamy and I loved how they added dill which made everything taste so bright. The asparagus was perfectly seasoned and still had a nice snap to it. What really made this omelette amazing was how they didn't skimp on the Dungeness crab - they put these big chunks all throughout which made it taste so decadent. The eggs were also super fluffy and cooked perfectly. Campfire Trout 7.87/10- they make this with pan-fried cornmeal-crusted trout and serve it with two eggs, peppered bacon, and potatoes. I really liked the texture that the cornmeal gave the trout - super crispy on the outside while keeping the fish moist inside. The eggs paired so well with the fish, and I loved how the bacon had this peppery kick to it. The potatoes were fantastic - perfectly cooked and I loved the rosemary flavor they added. They also gave us salsa on the side which surprisingly worked so well with the trout! The trout and crab omelette also came with a side of sourdough bread with butter and jam which was also so good but everything was so filling. Green Tea 10/10- I love hot green tea and this was the perfect drink with breakfast! Plums has been my go-to brunch spot since highschool, so when my parents arrived in the U.S, I couldn't wait to share this iconic American brunch experience with them. We got the Dutch baby, skirt steak and eggs, cinnamon roll, and corn chicken salad, and everything was so good. My parents, who tend to find American food overly sweet or salty, were pleasantly surprised. The steak and eggs were perfectly seasoned, with incredible cut fries that complemented the dish so well. The Dutch baby was light, not overly sweet, and the fresh berries were a burst of freshness in every bite. The corn salad was also surprisingly really good.. The syrup here may have changed me for life! Delicious! I made a reservation the day online the day before, and I'm so glad I did! There was a big line on a Sunday mid-morning. We were sat right away, brought drinks, food order taken. In fact, we were in and out of Plums in 30 min from the time we sat to the time we left. They get you IN and OUT, and service did feel rushed. Once you put your card down, the servers send over someone else to help you pay at the table. I would've liked to sit longer but we did feel like we needed to leave so they could get the next group in. That being said, we both really enjoyed our meals. I got the Hot Honey Chicken & Waffles and my partner got the Oregon Trail. Pricey, but typical brunch princes around $20 each. Coffee $5/cup but they did refill several times and offer to-go cups too. They have a very extensive cocktail menu that we did not try, but I could see myself coming back just to try some! I've heard great things about this place and got the opportunity to try it. It wasn't my cup of tea- a bit too sweet and artificial for my liking but perhaps I tried the wrong thing. I got the coconut french toast. It advertised coming with orange butter but I didn't receive it. The fruit that it did come with was very unripe, especially the papaya. The french toast tasted like it's doused in sugar candy- much too sweet for me! The cinnamon rolls were not great either - the texture was spongy and dry and the cinnamon/frosting was lackluster.
