I have been here three times and I have had really bad experiences the three times. They take advantage when you are drinking they charge you more. Be careful because they steal your money and charge you the triple of what it really is. The food is terrible no good taste. It was a standard night. Late leaving work. Late leaving the gym. Hungry and faced with a 9:30 dinner time. I was planning on seeking out a burrito a few blocks away, but when I passed Poc Chuc and saw their menu, figured I'd give it a shot. Glad I did. This place was reviewed in the Chronicle a few months back and was given high marks. It's in an unassuming spot near 16th/Van Ness, easily missed, but worth the trip. I went with the braised chicken that came with rice and a black bean puree, and it was really good. The chicken practically fell off the bone, and the puree made for an excellent topping on the burrito I made back at home. All in all, very good eats (and I was home earlier than planned). read more

I second everything everybody has said. The nice and steamy, home made tortilla and the best black bean puree ever. I feel like there's some chocolate in there some where. Got to get their secret recipe. The waittress was super nice and accommodating and gave us free cantaloupe frescas to taste. I had the gigantic mug of Jamaica (Hibuscus), not too sweet, but right amount of tartness. Loved the condiments of salsas. Just the right amount of spice. Everything is so healthy for you. I had the Poc Chuc, 3 flat slices of pork. After sharing, I still have enough leftovers for another meal! We tried the appetizer sampler. The shredded porks were the best. I find myself falling in love with this place. Loved the decor and it's NOT noisy, like those high end la-la restaurants. Just inviting and comfortable. Got to find an excuse to go again! read more

Good portions, friendly staff, clean atmosphere! I had the Cochinitas Pibil - it was served in a bowl with a lot of sauce. I'd expected a plate, but fortunately, the server told me how to eat it: you take the delicious tortilla, scoop some rice into it, then the pork + sauce, sprinkle some lime / shallots on it, and make a little taco out of it. So, if you're not sure how to eat something, or if something served seems different than expected, just ask! (Ideally they should have some photos on their menu, but the explanation was good too.) read more

My friend and I plan our foodie adventures practically to the minute, so we were dismayed when we got to Poc Chuc at 10:35 a.m. on a Saturday to find that they were not open yet (despite what it says on their website and here on Yelp). Luckily, we were allowed to wait inside, after recalling what Spanish I can remember, until the kitchen was ready to start cooking. The food was worth the wait. The meal comes with lots of tortillas, kept warm in a plastic container. My friend had the tender pollo pibil and I loved my panuchos and salbute. You really can't go wrong with a fried tortilla. I wish we had room to order an agua fresca, because they apparently come in a whopping glass pitcher, but we were perfectly content with our meal and left feeling very, very satisfied. read more

The bright note of the dish was actually the rice, it was very flavorful and we couldn't stop eating it. First off, the chips and salsa that they serve you in the beginning are absolutely INCREDIBLE. I don't know what they put in the salsa to make it so good. Friend thinks beans, since it was brownish. Whatever it was, it was mucho delicioso! I wish they had brought it out in a bigger bowl, since we had to ask for refills several times. Then the food. We all loved our meals. I had tacos with shrimp and avocado. I guess that isn't too Mayan a dish, but whatever. It was perfectly portioned, delicious and satisfying. The meal was very reasonably priced and the waiter was friendly. There was a crowd in there but we were always able to get attention when needed. I would come back here for the salsa alone. The night was supposed to begin at Emmy's Spaghetti Shack but I didn't feel like subjecting myself or my friend to the 90 minute wait, so five minutes before she rolled up to my doorstep I decided to Yelp it for a backup joint. Listing #1: Poc Chuc. I've always been telling myself to get out and try new places in the Mission, and the place had pretty sweet reviews so I figured why not? As soon as she arrived at my apartment I suggested a change in plan and we were off and looking for parking six blocks later. We walked in and waited to be seated. The host (a really friendly mustachioed guy) came up a few seconds later and said regretfully that they were full at the moment. While we were speaking I noticed that two other servers at the rear who had scoped our arrival a few moments earlier proceeded to make seating magic happen. A minute later they approached us and our host and said that they could seat us. On our way to the back the host alerted us to their lack of alcoholic beverages, but said that we were more than free to bring in our own beer and wine, no corkage fee. This looked to be the start of an awesome dinner. Based on the reviews I had scanned earlier, I started the meal with empanadas and a mug of horchata, and both of us ended up sharing the Pollo Pibil and the Poc Chuc (their specialty). Everything was delicious, very flavorful and extremely well prepared. The only slightly underwhelming dish was the Poc Chuc, but that was mostly because the taste of the grilled pork was already very familiar to both of us. I highly recommend this place, not just for their excellent food, but also for their impeccable service. The host was very helpful and eager to make meal recommendations, and we always felt like we were being attended to. The dishes and additional order we made during the meal were served quick and hot. The service was above and beyond and definitely up there with many restaurants I've been to. It was particularly surprising because you wouldn't necessarily think this place would be up there. It's in the Mission but a little bit away from the "action" as it were. Still very close to the BART which was helpful. It's a narrow and easy to miss restaurant if you aren't specifically looking for it. But it's worth looking for. We had a larger group (7) which they were able to accommodate on a Friday night without too mush hassle. They have a really good horchata here and the juices are equally good. Not grainy at all, very smooth. Chips and guacamole were a great start and the guy just kept bringing chips and salsa which was nice as we waited for our entrees. I got the Poc Chuc and you won't be wanting for more food. There's plenty on the plate and it looked and tasted great. There were also some tortillas as well to share. From what I could tell the chicken pibil was very moist and saucy with fall of the bone chicken. The carne asada had slabs of meat on the plate and that may be what I would try when we next come back because I am sure we will be back. The drinks order got a little messed up so there were some extra drinks which they gave to us which was nice. At the end we got a free dessert as well which was unexpected but happily scoffed down in seconds by the group! read more

YUM YUM YUM! Loved the food here, we got the appetizer plate, the poc chuc and the carne asada shared between 3 people. There was plenty of food and I left very full and satisfied. The homemade tortillas are excellent with the meal. By themselves they are a little bland. So you must eat them when they are hot and with the delicious entrees. The horchatta was excellent as well. One of the few places that deserves 5 stars for food and service. Actually, 5 stars is not enough. I came here for the first time 2 names ago and though that has changed, the food and awseome service haven't. We found ourselves here again last week. I had planned a suprise birthday dinner for my man and we were all planning to meet at a place that never requires reservations. For that reason, we didn't know they were closed for vacation. Shit. So all his friends start to arrive while we're outside the closed restaurant. Now everyone is suprised! Where can a party of 9 go in the Mission on a Friday night at 7 without reservations? Basically nowhere. Luckily we remembered Poc Chuc, formerly Popol Vuh and Chitchen Itza, and that when we last went, it was virtually empty on a Saturday night. We all headed over and were seated in less than 5 minutes. The staff was so kind and accomodating and everything we ate was delicious. Panuchos, the signature poc chuc, it was all good. So good that everyone commented that they were happy the first restaurant was closed. I love that it's Mexican food but not your standard fare. They even let us have our homemade birthday cake without charge. And another huge selling point: no beer and wine license. We drank a ton of beer...from the liquor store at a fraction of restaurant mark-up plus they gave us complimentary sangria. In addition to a monetary tip, we left the staff half of the cake and a six pack. They deserved it. Not only will I be back many times but Poc Chuc has secured the rest of our party as regular patrons. If you want awesome food and reasonable prices in a lovely atmoshere with the most friendly and attentive service ever, you MUST eat here! read more

I came here with my cousin one Saturday afternoon, about an hour after we finished lunch. It was on our itinerary for our day in the Mission, so we couldn't miss it! We were just fresh off a satisfying meal at Balompie's and strolled the couple blocks down to this establishment. Enter Poc-Chuc. A star for the atmosphere! The place was dimly lit, quiet, and low-key. Nice mood! It's a Mayan place, and there was even a painting in the back of an Aztec pyramid! I'm a big nerd for all the sacrificial Aztec stuff; social studies was one of my favorite subjects as a kid, so I got a kick out of seeing that pyramid. Menu time. Since we'd just eaten lunch, we decided to go light. We thought it'd be a good idea to share the Platillo Maya, the platter. The waitress gave us a look when she realized that was all we were ordering. Minus one star for that look. I didn't like the "look." The service was pretty quick, and then our food comes. For 10 bucks, we got: 1) Panucho: Hand made tortilla filled with black bean puree, slightly fried, topped with shredded turkey, lemon marinated cabbage, pickled red onions and avocado, sprinkled with ground black pepper 2) Salbute: Hand made tortilla puff, slightly fried, topped with shredded turkey, lemon marinated cabbage, pickled red onions and avocado, sprinkled with ground black pepper 3) Empanada: Half folded hand made tortilla stuffed with ground pork, served on a bed of black bean puree and tomato/onion sauce 4) Tostada: Crisp corn tortilla topped with black bean puree and queso fresco 5) Kotzito: Crisp taco covered with tomato/onion sauce and queso fresco. My reviews of the items? The panucho was fantastic; the black bean puree enhanced the flavor tremendously, and the whole thing was a blend of wonderful colors, though it was a little hard to see in that dark restaurant. The salbute was essentially the same thing as the panucho, minus black bean puree, so it wasn't as tasty. The empanada was tiny and savory; a good serving leaving you wanting more. I also enjoyed the tostada, mainly because of the black bean puree. The kotzito, on the other hand, was really...meh. It was essentially a taquito with nothing inside. I bit into it, and got really confused because I was expecting to taste something, but got nothing. But I won't subtract stars for the blah-ness of the kotzito; maybe I was just expecting too much and was just ignorant. All in all, a good eating experience, tasty foods, and the perfect amount for an afternoon snack. read more

Update 6/29/2010: No more BYOB, hence -1 star. I'd put it at 3.5 now if I could, but because of my fantastic first experience, I'll round up. Food is still great, but the past few times I have come back, service has been just okay. Not terrible, but not the super friendly wonderfulness that made me fall in love with this place the first time. Original Review: This place is amazing. The service is the best I've seen so far in SF. Our waiter, Gonzalo, was super nice. We forgot to bring wine with us, but he recommended a place close by to go pick up a bottle. They don't even charge a corkage fee! The food was delicious. We had the veggie trio which came with 3 different veggie dishes (Panucho, Salbute, Empanada). The ingredients were super fresh. I was a fan of the pickled ginger that came on the side. The Poc Chuc was also amazing. The meat itself came wonderfully flavored, and the black bean side was a nice touch. The salsa it came with was super spicy (and I like spicy food!), but it went very well with the meat and tortillas. We still had half the bottle of wine left when we finished our dinner, but our waiter encouraged us to stay and enjoy the rest of our beverage :) My only complaint is that they don't have coffee. All in all, a very solid dinner place with super fresh ingredients and the friendliest service I know of in SF. I will definitely be back. read more

Sitting at the junction of 16th and Van Ness doesn't really prepare you for any good restaurants: It's a fairly barren intersection, especially compared to other streets that cross paths with 16th further into the Mission. Still, there it is: off to one side, the small but proud red sign for Poc Chuc. Try it. You'll like it. The authority has it that Poc Chuch is "genuine." Why they still bill themselves as "Mayan fusion," then, is beyond me, since "genuine" seems to more readily fit the bill. There are no particular frills about this small but tidy place: just relatively simple, tasty food. We started off with an appetizer of fried plantains for roughly $6, which weren't ground-breaking but nevertheless satisfied. Our main dishes were rather large, and really stood out as home-cooked: their black beans are fantastic, as were their tortillas onto which I portioned on servings of my lime-cooked pork and rice. $2.50 for a large watermelon juice was definitely worth it, as well, and the people who serve up your meals are as friendly as you could hope for. Amidst all the great restaurants in the area, Poc Chuc may not claim top billing - but it certainly rounds out one of the lists for honest, genuinely tasty food. read more

When my fiance's coworkers are in from out-of-town she feels compelled to take them out. Not like "terminate with extreme prejudice" style but like "here is our wonderful city, enjoy some tasty ethnic foods while I fret over what terrible off-color stories my partner may tell". OK, once it was both but that involved Double-Dutch and way too many shots so we'll save that for... I guess a Double-Dutch review. We've lived 3 blocks from Poc Chuc for half a year and simply never got around to it. I've taken many trips to the Yucatan and Belize so I was primed to be a hater but, as the 5 stars attest, I found no purchase for my vitriol. Friday night and it was a narrow, Manhattan-ey space (i.e. crowded, loud, full of energy and emotive groups). In Central American style everything was front and center; kitchen, beverages, prep all swirling with a pleasant, brisk but unstressed rollick. The service was spiffy, friendly, not overly chatty, direct. The manager ducked in at intervals to expedite. We felt well looked after and they weren't afraid to step up with recommendations that were both clear and honest. The sampler platter of appetizer thingees was tasty but for four people it lead to the inevitable "can I break that in half? did I touch that? that was better and now I think I've hogged it". Two people sharing this thing would lead to less fretting but also lead to being full before the entrees which would be a crying shame because those entrees are damn good. I had the titular dish; grilled pork with a spicy slaw and savory rice. Fresh corn tortillas, that vinegar-ey hot hot picante hot salsa gobble gobble yum! I ate the half I couldn't finish for lunch today and it was almost as good except I didn't have that salsa which gives it +2 attack rolls against my taste buds so, if you do take out or doggie bag, make sure you ask them to bottle up some of that spicy magic for you. The lady, while forbidding me to tell the story of my best friend finding a huge bag of crackrocks hidden under his Tenderloin windowsill and proceeding to smoke them all over a week span, enjoyed the heck out of a turkey macaroni soup. Our out-of-towners with the sensitive sensibilities had the soup (same, good) and some chopped pork thing which was rated "tasty-rific". This thing is getting overlong so I will throw in a few stray odds and ends. -special beverages=score! (aqua fresca and horchota both legit) -it's loud tight quarters, don't take somebody you're still trying to suss out there -being nice goes a long way in all situations except convincing someone you're romantic partner material and it certainly worked for the staff of Poc Chuc. I may never date them but I'll continue to think very fondly of them and maybe call them to kvetch when I've got a bad case of the Mondays. read more

Service is on point, bathrooms are super clean, food quality is far, far greater than the price (under-priced is an understatement). It is officially my new fav. place in the mission. Authentic, charming! Quality experience for smaller parties and great for dates. Turkey and lamb are an authentic and traditional Mayan / Yucatan food and most places don't actually even serve it... but they do here- so this is my place. Quite a few vegetarian options as well. Surprisingly generous with freebies... I have almost always received a free desert, drink or special item because I smile, say thank you and come a little later (after 1 pm rush) when the server has some breathing room. I was never told I would get hooked up, it just so happened that both times I've gone, they keep bringing me free stuff -they must have known I had plans to review them on yelp :) Tucked behind a tree, it can be tricky to find... but my new landmark for friends that meet me here is "across the street from the gas/service station on 16th at Van Ness. I honestly don't know why everyone was raving about this place... The food was very decently priced and the service was good... but the food was unimpressive. I was really excited to try some Mayan food, but after trying it, I dont think I would go back. It's not that the food was bad... it just didn't WOW me. I guess I might've expected more from a 4.5 star rated place... Here's how the review of the food went: -Poc Chuc- most popular dish. Thinly sliced pork with a citrus flavor... b ut it was over done. The onions and cabbage were just eh... - Carne Asada - flank steak, nicely cooked, but my friend was just EH about it - Vege Trio - good for vegetarians, with generous portions - Appetizer platter - 5 different types of tacos, empanadas... pretty big dish, hard to share. My friend actually got it as her main dish. She said the pork was really good, but otherwise the turkey was kind of dry. Absolutely delicious and the staff is very nice. It's a pretty small place with about 10 tables but it isn't usually packed. I have come twice with 8 friends and they glad put tables together for us. Their courtesy salsa is to die for, one of them being super spicy but I like it. My favorite to order is the poc chuc with is grilled marinated pork. I mean, how can you come to poc chuc and not order poc chuc?! Their frescas are also very refreshing. Because my husband and I don't believe in sharing, we always order our own dish but their portions are huge so come prepared. Don't worry though, I always throw it down :) Don't forget you have to have room for their chips and salsa too, which they are very good about refilling. I'll give this place 5 stars because food was 4.5, and the little guy serving was adorable. Came here with a buddy HUNGRY. Our drinks came quickly, and the fruit juice came in a huuuuuge glass. Definite family-owned feel, and food reflected that love. I got a chicken dish that unfortunately had little variety, but my god the chicken jumped off the bone and flew, hands raised, into my mouth. My buddy got a skirt steak meal, and his was perfectly charred with just the right amount of salty flavor and spices. Poc-Chuc is a gem. San Francisco Mexican food can sometimes appear fungible and indistinguishable, but Poc-Chuc's take on Mexican and Mayan cuisine has flashes of culinary brilliance tempered with the taste of home cooking. By the latter, I mean food that has subtlety, nuance, and layers of flavor indicative of slow-cooked, not mass produced, food. Our party of four adults and two toddlers had a blast here. The adults enjoyed the delicious and flavorful (yet not overpowering) food and tolerant staff, while the toddlers enjoyed the expansive space, atmosphere, and variety of food (including chicken, beans, and rice acceptable to picky toddler palates). Our meal started off with the platillo Maya, a "best of" appetizer selection, including panucho (slightly fried tortilla filled with black bean puree and topped with shredded turkey, lemon marinated cabbage, pickled red onions, and avocado), salbute (slightly fried tortilla puff, topped with shredded turkey, lemon marinated cabbage, pickled red onions and avocado), and empanadas (folded tortilla stuffed with ground pork, and served on a bed of black bean puree and tomato/onion). Each dish was tasty and even the toddlers enjoyed the appetizers made with turkey and beans. The restaurant's namesake "poc chuc" featured tender grilled citrus marinated pork, served with vegetable-bouillon rice, topped with grilled tomatoes and red onions and a side of black bean puree. This dish was both flavorful and, like the other dishes we ordered, rather unique among Latin American/Mexican restaurant cuisine. The pescado frito (pan fried fish, served with vegetable-bouillon rice and lemon marinated cabbage, sliced fresh tomatoes and pickled red onions) was larger than expected and mild, yet flavorful. The pollo rostizado (roasted chicken served with vegetable-bouillon rice and lemon marinated cabbage, sliced fresh tomatoes and pickled red onions), unlike other roast chicken I've had at Latin American/Mexican restaurants, seemed to have involved both roasting and braising; the exterior had the smokiness of roasted chicken, but the meat itself tasted slow braised. This was quite enjoyable after I got over my surprise that the chicken lacked the springy bite of traditional roasted or baked chicken. The camarones al ajillo (tiger prawns, mushrooms, green onions and cherry tomatoes sautéed in a white wine garlic butter sauce, served alongside a stew of sautéed zucchini, carrots, red and green bell peppers, and rice potatoes) was light and flavorful. A Friday night 4 of us landing at Poc-Chuc at about 6PM, peeking in the window there were only 2 people seated - not a good sign. Throwing caution to the wind, we entered and picked a table. Food: Plantons (fried) appetizer - tasty Poc Chuc - marinated grilled boneless pork - good Pescado Frito - a smallish whole fish deep fried - perfectly done - tasty good Pescado Fillet - nice boneless fillet - tasty good Shrimp (forgot the name!) - looked to be sauteed w/ a veggies - tasty good Sharing bites from each others plates, we all got to sample the dishes. The black bean puree that accompanies each meal was tasty. The white rice on each plate was tasty, seemed like it was cooked in chicken broth. The assessment of Poc-Chuc was unanimous - it was good. The adorable server was efficient and pleasant, but a bit robotic. read more

Great place for a fast, inexpensive lunch. I took BART from Lake Merritt to 16th Street and walked about a block to the restaurant. We were seated immediately. The staff is friendly and very welcoming. We were a party of three so we decided to order the Platillo Maya (combo platter), Platanos, and Poc Chuc family-style along with some aguas frescas. The food came out fast and hot. The accompanying hot salsa is to die for, just the right amount of heat. The mild salsa was equally flavorful but without the spice. The best of the three items was definitely the Poc Chuc, but I would recommend the combo platter since it gives you a bit of everything in tapas size portions plus it comes with some of the best homemade corn tortillas (and plenty of them). I'd probably go back just for the tortillas! The only reason why I didn't give 4 stars is because though the lunch menu appeared to be large, everything seemed pretty much the same so there wasn't a lot of variety. Once I try some other items, I might have to modify my rating. The whole bill for a substantial lunch came out to $13/pp including tip. Not bad considering how much we ate. read more

I had the most wonderful birthday dinner here a week ago. My party of 8 all LOVED their entrees, we all brought our own favorite wine, and the staff was so friendly and sweet. It's always a bit stressful picking a restaurant for your birthday, and hoping everyone will like it, atmosphere, good for groups, etc etc... but I honestly can say that this was the perfect choice. Looking for a tasty home-style Latin feast? Well this is the place! The Guacamole was fresh with homemade chips to go along with it, the Mexican Coke was delectable-as always. The tortillas were also brilliant and the Carne Asada was seasoned to perfection! I've been meaning to come here for forever... but for some reason am never anywhere near the mission. I am so glad, my friend dragged me here last night (she's become a little obsessed with the place and has eaten there like four times in two months). The fried plantains with small salad and sour cream.... little bits of fried, sweet heaven balanced out nicely with the sourness of the sour cream. The pan-fried whole tilapia fish... so yummy, especially with a small amount of the super hot onion relish and a squeeze of lime. Very well priced, great tasting food and drink (their Watermelon Aguas Frescas were excellent) the service is perfect, and the place is way cuter than you would think it is from the street. But please note they are closed on Sundays and Wednesdays and will also be closed next weekend for the religious holiday. read more

Well, for me, it's whole fried fish. . . it's one of those things that I look at wistfully on a menu and then I order something healthier. . . Well, tonight I busted out and went to Poc Chuc for the Pescado Frito. . . mmmm. . . so good! I immediately flashed back to traveling in Mexico and eating fried fish all the time. And of course, since I'm filipino, we go nuts for fried fish with white rice. . . So yes, I picked that fish clean. . . poking around for every bite possible and also sucking leftover meat off the bones (yes, whole fried fish means that you have to deal with bones --- but it was easy peasy). My boyfriend got the Poc Chuc and loved it. There was so much more that I wanted to order but I think I need to bring a larger group with me so I can sample more dishes. My first visit was better than the second. First time around, it was homey and quiet. Next time, it was noisy (kids running around and the TV was on,) and dirty (dishes were piled up on the back table as if they were busy and short-staffed.) That said, the food is pretty good. The chimole de pavo was the clear winner. It was rich and had a good spicy kick to it. It didn't look like much when it arrived, but there was a lot of shredded turkey in there. This place was GREAT!! We went here for a friend's birthday party and they were able to seat 19 of us. Honestly the place is small, and if you didn't look closely outside you would probably miss it, so it was very nice of them to seat such a large party. The food was good too!! The portions were just right, not too big and not too small. What we got: Appetizer: Platillo Maya - super large appetizer that we shared among 4 people. Really flavorful and let me tell you, that salsa verde has got some HEAT!! Main Courses: Estofado de Borrego - Lamb dish that was very tender Carne Asada - Not too salty Pollo Pibil - super tender, not dry at all. I am a huge fan of the food for this place. It is located a bit in the ghetto part of the mission and the atmosphere is very simple. The meats here are all very juicy and well flavored. The portions are very generous. Their frescas are made there and very delicious, love the horchata. After visiting the outskirts of cancun, this is the best Mayan food I've found. My favorites include the Pescado Frito, Pollo Pibil, and of course, the poc chuc. The Platillo Maya is a great way to try many types of mayan food if you're unfamiliar. The service is very timely. Many visitors are obviously local to the area. It's not a fancy place though, so come with close friends and not when trying to impress. read more
