I decided to go to this establishment because it was close to the hotel I was staying at on Shelter Island. After reading the mixed reviews online I figured I needed to see what this place was like for myself. Before going inside you notice right away that parking can be a problem. It's narrow and has very few spaces. I was there around 12:30pm on a lazy Monday and it was almost at capacity. Then when I walked in I was surprised to see that it wasn't full at all. The interior reminds me of the inside of a boat. It's rustic and appropriate for the area. It has no exterior windows but it's clean and sanitary, which was most important to me. I ordered the chiliqiles with the country potatoes and it was amazing. The portion size was abundant, I actually had leftovers. That was surprising considering I hadn't eaten in 14 hours. My girl ordered the Fernando and she gave the same assessment. On top of that we ordered the banana nut pancakes with chocolate chips(server recommendation) and they are awesome. Again, big portions and full of flavor. Everything came out to us warm and fresh tasting. Service was pleasant, quick, and genuine. I was very appreciative for the insider information on the pancakes. As far as price goes, you can't beat three entrees and a coffee for under $30. If it was bad food and service, I would question it. But I definitely got my money's worth. The only reason I didn't this place 5-stars is because of the bathrooms. This spot is really low key! Definitely enjoyed my stay in San Diego, i needed a spot close by to my hotel and was able to find this for breakfast. The indoor setting is comfortable, it has a real home feel. The food was delicious, a nice sized plate of food! Customer service was also good, they checked up on me a lot. Ok, based on good reviews, we tried this place over the weekend. When we walked-in, the place looked like it got flooded and cleaned but the smelled stayed in there. I agree that the place looks like a local but a local from maybe Julian NOT Point Loma local. Very mildewy smell and dark. Hostesses where sitting on the bar, and told us to sit anywhere we want. The moment we sat down, maybe give or take 30 seconds, the waitress came up to us, and ask if we are ready to order. We haven't even got a chance to look at the menu. The place was not really packed but one of the hostess made a comment asking the manager, "where did all these people come from?" I thought it was kinda odd for her to ask that question in front of the customers, like she didn't want us to be there. When we ordered, it took about 15 mins. for the food to be served. Waitress never ask if we need anything else, she just gave us the plate as if we are doing her a favor. We ordered one of their specialty breakfast on the menu. Mmmmhhh, how can I put this nicely when it comes to the taste of the food? Well, I would rather go to Denny's! With that said, the best thing on the plate for me was the burnt toasted wheat bread. I've been here 4-5 times and every time I go the food is amazing! I love the grilled chicken sandwich! The spicy sauce sets it apart from your typical (boring) grilled chicken sandwich. It's probably the best chicken sandwich I've ever had! The servers are always friendly, happy and make pleasant small talk. I really love this place but especially the food here! On the recommendation of a local boat owner, we decided to try this small "hole in the wall" as he described it. After driving by numerous times, going on and off Shelter Island, we knew exactly where it was. We pulled in about 10:30am on a Monday morning. There was another table of 6-8 people and our family of 4. There was plenty of room for 50 more people (or so it looked). So, we were happy we missed the breakfast crowd. I had a Hawaiian Omelet w/ jalapenos and pepper jack cheese added. Along with a side of their home made corn beef hash. My wife who is on a strict diet, had an omelet with bacon, cheddar and broccoli. Each of our omelets came with toast and choice of potatoes or hash browns. One of my daughters ate my wife's sides and the other had chocolate chip pancakes. All of the food was amazing and if we are in the area again, we will be stopping by Point Break for some great food. read more

The eggs were bland, the potatoes were bland, and the chorizo (I had the Fernando Scramble, which stuck that Abba song in my head for the rest of the morning - not their fault; that's my own issue, but it was annoying nonetheless) tasted more like tomatoes with a hint of meat; almost like it was a chorizo version of a sloppy joe. After calling three times, with no answer, I finally got through and ordered to-go for my boyfriend and I. On the phone I was informed that the online menu was inaccurate and that one of the things I ordered was no longer offered. I finally placed my order and was told it would be 15 minutes. We drove over and even stopped at the store on the way. When we arrived about 20 minutes after placing our order, it was still not ready. There was one waitress working the bar, tables, and calls. We waited another 10-15 minutes, after staring at our completed order on the kitchen line for half of that time. The waitress was sweet despite this. The food was alright. My boyfriend really enjoyed the grilled salmon. The French fries were pretty standard and the grilled cheese was satisfying. 1 star for service. 3.5 for food. read more

I've been to this place 2x.. Once in April and once in December of 2019 They have a TON of selections.. however, my meals could've been better.. I got an omlette with hash browns and fruit. The hash browns were nearly burnt, cutting it was kinda hard. There was barley any meat in my omlette (that I asked for), the fruit looked kinda old to be honest.. on the plus side, the omlette was tasty otherwise, just wish it was a better plate for $14 I have also had a sandwich. The meat was dry.. they barley put sauce on it (like a dot). The best part about this place is the SERVICE. They have fantastic waiters and waitresses, I applaud. Reason why it made me go back was because of the service. I may give this place another shot, other than that.. 3 stars. read more

This place is a true local's breakfast joint. You don't go for the service, you go for the saltiness of the locale. The servers are all young chicks in tight tank tops and short shorts if you're into that sort of thing. The breakfast grub is great diner food with a few healthy options. The mugs advertise local Shelter Island businesses and sailors shout hello to fellow sailors from across the room. If you're visiting Point Loma, hit this place up for breakfast. It's cheaper and far more entertaining than Red Sails for breakfast. If you're a local, I expect to see you there soon. read more

Awesome, big breakfasts! We stayed at the Pearl Hotel down the street from this place. We drove past a couple times a few days before and from the outside it looks like a hole in the wall joint. It's actually pretty roomy and homey inside. They have tvs (perfect for watching Sunday morning football) while enjoying some yummy omelettes and coffee. This was the very first place my bf took me to on my very first visit to SD back in October! They make great omelettes, and well-stacked pancakes! The first time we went I got a veggie omelette which had a good amount of veggies in it, and the second time we went I got strawberry-banana pancakes (I think...) and there was more then enough for me to eat. I ended up doggy-bagging that which wasn't too great later on. I agree w/ Sharu L., though, in that their service can be really slow, but there aren't many tables to begin with. What an Awesome place to nurse a hangover! Not too greasy but just enough - the Eggs Florentine and homefries (potatoes) were a treat! The breakfast menu is full of options you don't find everyday - with 4 styles of Benedict and a ton of flavorful omelletes to choose from, I was drooling in my fresh coffee just reading over the menu. My roommate had a hard time ordering because he was fixated on the hot waitress with no bra. Service was fast and we didnt' have to wait at all. The place is full of friendly locals and is on my list of good breakfast spots whenever I need one. With good prices and fresh coffee to bat, this was a pleasant experience overall. Now this isn't upscale and the local clientele are as important to the experience as the shark head with the dangling baby. They've got a nice selection of local brews on tap plus the standard American fare. The food menu is pretty thick with sandwiches and burgers but I ordered the fish and chips. They allied me to substitute salad for the fries - no up charge. The fish was locally caught and prepared nicely. Portions are generous. Great old school rock and roll was playing in the background. You couldn't ignore that but it wasn't outrageously loud. I'd like to bring my buddy the "Dive Bar" expert here sometime. I think it would pass muster. Coffee can be a little warm to cold, but I mix enough cream with it, that I do not care much. The food taste like warmed up leftovers, which I love. The fact that I can walk to this place isn't the only reason I really love their breakfast. The #1 omelet is my favorite! I'm not a big meat eater, but the combo of sausage, smoke gouda, artichokes & pesto is deliciously unique. Of course, with a Mimosa or two, it's even better. I've only been to Point Break for lunch a couple of times, but they have a sandwich version of my favorite omelet (turkey v. sausage) and a yummy veggie/cheese combo called the OB (fitting). Overall, great food. The service can be a little slow when it gets busy, but they are always friendly. And it's a small place with not much room to move around.
