Have been looking for a new dive bar to frequent since Cap'n Keno's closed in Encinitas. While the food prices at Point Break are nowhere near as cheap, the happy hour beverages fit the bill. The dining room has the same stuck in the 70s vibe. Happy hour lasts until 6:30 PM M-F. Also stopped in after a concert at Humphrey's on a Friday evening and had the place to myself for a short while. The microbrew selection is adequate. Haven't tried the food. read more

I love this place! I always get the house omelette because you can't find it anywhere else! A delicious sausage omelette with smoked gouda, artichokes and topped with a creamy pesto. My favorite thing to do on Sunday morning is get up and go to a dance class and then eat all the calories (and more) back at Point Break. This is a classic spot on the way to Shelter Island and when you step inside you just know you're going to have a top notch diner brunch. Decor is old school. Music is modern. Servers are the best in the land. There is an outdoor patio if you prefer sunshine to wood panel vibes. Dogs are welcome here too which I think just makes it even more perfect. We have come here for years and love it. This is your classic local place that has great food, strong drinks, and amazing people. I recently saw a few reviews from what appear to be the same woman that disparage point break. Alicia G. And Alejandra G. Both had a few bad things to say about how they were treated. When you look at their pictures you realize it's the same person with an ax to grind. Bottom line, if you are a princess and think the world revolves around you please don't come here! We were staying nearby and had a hankering for breakfast. After Googling a few spots we settled on Point Break. Mainly because of the proximity to our hotel and their menu pricing. A short walk from the hotel and we arrived. Our first impression was, "What the hell is this shack?". We walked past the old fisherman looking dude sitting out front smoking a cigarette to a partially open heavy wooden door. I opened the door and we stepped into an old, dimly lit café with no windows, a low ceiling and dirty carpet. We were greeted and told we could seat ourselves so we grabbed a couple of stools at the bar. We sat at the bar and looked around at all of the odd décor that seemed to be randomly placed here and there. Most of it with a layer or two of dust on it. We were greeted by a very nice young woman behind the bar. She took our drink order, a Red Trolley Ale for me and a Bloody Mary for Becky. The Bloody Mary, by the way, Bex said was very good. Nice and spicy. After looking at the huge Point Break breakfast menu and hemming and hawing, I finally landed on the Fun Breakfast for $8.25 Two Pancakes Any Style, Two Strips of Bacon or Two Sausage and two Scramble Eggs. I substituted Louisiana Sausage. The pancakes were light and fluffy with just enough density in the middle. They were cooked just right. The eggs were scrambled well and seasoned nicely. I received one lengthwise cut of half of one link of the Louisiana sausage. The other half would've been appreciated. Bex opted for the Point Break*fast $8.75 Eggs, Choice of Smoked Bacon, Breakfast Sausage, Louisiana Sausage, or Ham with Grilled Potatoes, Hash Browns, Black Beans, or Refried Beans, and Choice of Toast She chose scrambled eggs, breakfast sausage, grilled potatoes and sourdough toast. The eggs were cooked to her liking, but she did add S&P. The potatoes were excellent - I helped myself to some. She received three little sausage links. The Farmer John variety that you can find in just about any grocery store for $1 a package. Pretty good sausage albeit very small links. One of her links was burned beyond recognition. Completely inedible. We were surprised that it even made it to the plate. Except for the burnt sausage link, the food at Point Break was surprisingly good. Especially given the divey, shanty-like nature of the place. Three stars. read more

Another great experience here in Shelter Island, always enjoy Point Break. We came in for b'fast twice, always share an omelette since there is SO much food in one entree. Had the traditional benedict, country fried steak and pancakes. Pancakes are the highlight they did a nice job. Probably the worst country fried steak I've had. Dry and not very big. Gravy very average. Waitress very nice but it took a few to get her out on the patio. Worst thing is smoking is apparently allowed there was a lady lighting up wasn't pleasant. Also when we walked on to the patio there is a table by the outside door with a cleaning g bucket and an ashtray full of old cigs. Point Break is a DIVE, but the food is excellent ! Great Service - Really nice servers - and beer on tap. The building is the old Boll Weevil in Point Loma. The kitchen is most likely using the original hardware from the old Boll Weevil days, which makes everything really tasty and has that cooked in flavor. This is a great place for breakfast. We call it "Legs and Eggs" due to the pretty waitresses that work there. The Patty Melt is probably one of the best in all San Diego, and the Fry's that come with it are those large potato wedges cooked golden brown to perfection. The toasted bread on the patty melt is a deep golden brown basted in butter. No place else comes close to this melt. The atmosphere is deep dive nautical and it's a great place for a cold beer after work or lunch during the day. If you like dark dreary dives with GREAT food, this is the place for you. read more

Our family had a great time eating here while on vacation. It is dog friendly, so we were able to bring our dog with us to eat. The menu had something for everyone. In our group we had the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken, a cheeseburger and fries, and some salads. All of the portions were very large, and we were very full. I waited at the bar for quite a while and was greeted by a busy gal. She said she would be right back with me. For about 5 to 10 minutes she did not come back. One of three great stops last month. Hit the jackpot! Point Break is a great place to stop for breakfast. Our server, Ellen, was great, couldn't be better. She told us all about PB past. While it looks like a shack out side, it's the same inside! LOL The place is older than me, but don't let it stop you! The food was classic. I had the Chili Cheese Omelette and my friend has pork chops and eggs (see pix). Both of us were well fed, as well as well entertained by Ellen with her tales of the old days at Point Break on Shelter Island. This is one place you'll want to go to get out of the standard chain breakfasts as well as the upstart restaurants around San Diego. This place is history! read more

I'm going to go with 4 stars. I think their current rating is 3.5 which is about right. Place has good food at reasonable prices. Portions not that large which is fine now for me. Usually a dive place like this has larger portions but the food quality for breakfast was quite good. Would rather. have breakfast here than the hipster place "Ketch" across the street. I would come back which is the bottom line. Coffee was very good, eggs were a bit undersized (scrambled 3) felt like 2. Kind of a pet peeve of mine. Homemade corn beef hash was solid. Hash browns although from scratch are better from frozen. Wife had chorizo scramble and it was good. Service was very good too. Always wanted to come here on past visits to shelter island when I think it was called the Cattleman home of the steer burger but was afraid to go in. Not anymore!!! read more

Okay, let me first start out by saying that our Waitress/Bartender Kim was FANTASTIC! Nothing but 5 Stars on her service. However, we did not go to Point Break for service. We went for Dinner and to say that it was not good would be an understatement. I went with something simple....Chicken Fried Steak. It was without a doubt the WORST Chicken Fried Steak I have ever had. Whatever grease that it was cooked in left a very bitter taste. The portion was very small and the Gravy was HORRIBLE! We also ordered the Calamari and Artichoke appetizers. They came with some mystery white sauce. The same sauce for both appetizers...... The overall pricing was high for the quality of the meal. I would NOT recommend this restaurant if you are a fan of Chicken Fried Steak. Again, I am only giving them the 1 Star based on the meal that I was served. Maybe the cook was just having a bad night? Tried this place while I was staying in shelter island over the weekend! First of all, nobody really approaches you its open seating, the service is quite delayed and slow. But the food is actually pretty good I must say! The coffee sucks, it had a weird taste. I ordered the cinnamon and vanilla french toast but it tasted like regular French toast but the prices are quite cheap. And I tried the California omelette that was pretty good.
