Today I had a craving of some sausage from Pok-e-Jo's. I ordered the 2 meat plate (sausage/brisket) with mash potatoes and corn; it also came with slice of Texas toast. There was a bit of a hold up on the toast. As I made my way to the cashier the cook in the back came back into the kitchen to get out the toast. He used his bare hand to pick up the toast and place it in a container. As I watched him place the toast in the metal container he looked at me as "I hope he didn't see me pick up the toast with my bare hands. I'm a very particular how people deal with my food. I'm not sure where this guys hands were before he came back into the kitchen The cashier walked over and placed the toast in my container using a pair of tongs (the correct way). When I arrived home I just cut off the corners of the toast (the cook picked up the toast at the corner). Also Pok-e-Jo's has a really good peach tea; it was nice and refreshing. Better food than most other BBQ places and cheaper too. I like the variety of veggie choices too. My favorite dishes are the brisket and pork ribs. We have done to-go for groups and they always take good care of us. The atmosphere may not be as fancy as other places, but that's OK. read more

I am somewhat of a barbeque neophyte. There, I said it...feels good to get it off my chest (that's what she said, giggity). I have eaten here a couple of times and found their barbeque to be satisfactory. I have had very dry brisket at a few places around town (Branch BBQ - I'm lookin' at you) and since I am not a fan of sauce, it is painfully obvious when people do brisket wrong. I like the tender, almost granular, texture of their sausage. If you get the brisket, be sure to ask for the fatty (or wet, giggity) side. Had the ribs once - they are okay, maybe it was an off day. The sides are okay, I've had the mac-n-cheese both times - not sure why, it has a very pronounced easymelt flavor but passable none-the-less. The fries are fried to order and tossed with seasoned salt. The people working seem friendly enough. The price for the combo plates is a little high given the small amount of meat that you get, but then again it only looks small and is actually quite filling (that's what she said, giggity-giggity-goo). read more

This used to be one of my favorites - their beef ribs(back when they still served beef ribs) used to rival the beef ribs of The Salt Lick before the bottom fell out of the economy. It saddens me immensely to see this wave of cutbacks at great restaurants - they cut way back on good ingredients and as a result the finished product sucks. Such is the case with this Pokejos and the one at 183 & Great Hills Trail - prices have gone up and quality has gone way down. The brisket tasted like it was old and oven-cooked! Heck, I could've gotten the same thing at Bill Miller's bbq if I wanted something bad but it would've been much cheaper. The tea was watered down and didn't taste good. overall, the quality has gone down, and, as a result I will not go back for at least a year. read more

Pok-E-Jo's catered our wedding in October. We found out that they have a wedding/catering menu that is not just barbeque. We did our tasting and absolutely loved it. We really liked the fact that we could combine some traditional Texas BBQ - briskit with something different - pineapple mango salsa chicken. We had a lot of out of state family and friends come and they all raved about the food. Our coordinator made our plates and put SO much food on there. I tried a little of everything and it was delicious! From what I heard the Pokejos staff was great. We were very satisfied with Jason who coordinated everything for us including our tasting. It has been probably 3 years since we have been here and last night we gave it another try. It has been a long hard day because my son had gotten out of the hospital and I had PT due to a very bad back injury and it was so refreshing to walk into a restaurant and hear Ma'am and have someone behind the counter be so polite and helpful! Each item was amazing. My son got 2 ribs and fruit and he couldn't eat those ribs fast enough. He LOVED them! Then my youngest son got the mac and cheese and fruit. Now this son is picky and eats mac and cheese where ever we go and he was asking for seconds! My husband got the 3 meat plate (sausage, turkey and brisket) and he was so stuffed. I got the two meat plate turkey and brisket. Both meats were moist and full of flavor which normally I have a hard time finding moist and flavorful bbq here in TX. I got the green bean casserole as the side and the only thing I wish is that they used fresh green beans instead of the canned. You can tell that they are from a can. However I was able to overlook that for the most flavorful and moist BBQ we have had in a long while! This place not only has delicious food, the servings are huge!! My husband and I always order 1 plate, and it's plenty for us to share! This is by far one of my favorite bbq places in Austin for its deliciously cooked meats and fresh ingredients. In 2000 I moved to Austin, Texas for a game development job. While I was initially taken with the county line for all it has to offer, I bought a house just down the road from this Pok-e-Joe's establishment and worked nearby as well, which meant I was a regular customer at lunch. The chopped chicken sammich is hands down the most delicious hand held meatbread combo your humble narrator has ever had, matched only perhaps by the cheesesteak found in our nation's former capital and city of brotherly love. I have tried spatchcocking my own yardbird and dicing it with onion and tomato plus the added flavor reinforcements of paprika, cayenne, and the obligatory pepper blend and kosher salt...but it's just not the same. I miss you, Pok-e-Joe. If you lucky souls that CAN get the original don't take it upon yourselves to try this tasty creation on one of your visits to take the plunge, well that's akin to having freedom and not exercising it for all the spoils this democratic tenet provides. Well I am from the St Louis area where there is a tremendous amount of mom/pop BBQ places that are blow your mind smokey goodness and the sauces are secondary to the meat. This place is good but not great. Had brisket (super tender and juicy) which was good , the pork was a little dry and the sausage (which had a good flavor). The sides...were ok :( Would I come back...yes definitely over McDonald's. All my Texas BBQ experiences over the years are about the same...ok smoked meat with a whole lot of tomato base sauce. BBQ is all about the wood and the procedure...I believe they have the procedure but (cuz the brisket was some of the most tender anywhere) the smokey flavor was lacking all around...different wood and more smoke ring please. read more

I used pok e joes for my wedding catering and Jason king was the least bit of help. We have lost contact with him 3 times and he will not return our phone calls until we contact a store manager. Our price quote does not match the original one he gave me and what he included in our package is not what the website says it includes. I am extremely dissatisfied with our service this far and would not recommend using them for catering. read more

So for lunch, my lunch is at 6pm usually, me and a co-worker went to the Pok-e-jo's on Great Hills near the Arboretum. I have eaten at Pok-e-jo's many times but it had been well over a year. I had forgotten there was one so close to my work. This trip did not disappoint. I will add it to my regular rotation. I judge every BBQ restaurant in the same manner. How good is the chopped beef and sausage/hot link sandwich. I fell in love with this sandwich in college, in Stillwater, OK at a place called Cherokee Strip. They called it a Badwich and still is the best chopped and hot link sandwich ever. They used to have two for 1 on Tuesdays. Back to Pok-e-jo's they make a very good sandwich it is my 2nd favorite chopped/sausage sandwich in town behind Branch BBQ. The sides I had tonight were green bean casserole and Mac n Cheese. I got all of this for under $10. I think Pok-e-jo's has the best side selection and the best tasting sides in Austin. Oh and they even have buttermilk pie, which is great but not as good as my Mom makes. Pok-e-jo's has two sauces the regular and spicy, I went with the spicy tonight for the first time, it was ok. No where near as good as the original sauce. One last observation I think the location on great hills is much better tasting. Both locations have a friendly staff, but it is not full service you get your own drinks a utensils. read more

Pok-e Joe's food is great! having said that here is my complaint. The portion sizes to price is horrible! Ive noticed in the past few years that they have changed. In response to their change I have changed as well by not going there as much. Good job Accountants! Running a restaurant is not a Gordian Knot that needs to be solved. There are basic rules to being a success and Pok-e Joe's had them. They offered amazing food at good prices. Their peach cobbler is the best in town. Their sides are the best in town. I sometimes find myself reminiscing about the bake potato casserole. To put in my two cents worth about the comparison of BBQ between Rudy's and Pok-e Joe's I say this. After the gimmick of being corralled like cattle to the cashier's who rush you to a decision at Rudy's wears off the food at Pok-e Joe's leaves me the most satisfied. I will give a slight nod to Rudy's for their ribs. read more

Pok-E-Jo's did a great job catering fajitas for our anniversary party for about 100 people. The catering team were easy to work with and were helpful with regards to finding a solution for our vegan/vegetarian guests. The food showed up in plenty of time and the delivery person made sure everything was set up and ready to go. Best of all, the food was delicious. I feel like it was good value for money too. I moved close to Pok-e-Jo's and stopped in hoping it would be good enough to satisfy a craving for some quick BBQ. Not only was it good enough, it was great. I've been several times, always take-out, and once called in the order. The meat is great and the mac and cheese is so good its like a dessert. I came back and ordered a 3 meat plate. I asked for a second piece of bread, which they seemed happy to give me (the bread is really good). Lets just say I was a little hungry and ate the entire meal and didn't eat for the rest of the day. Overall better experience than my first time going. read more

Back again 2 days in a row. Wow how I miss this place. I have been in florida, and Dallas for.last 2.weeks. this.place is just as awesome as always. As an added bonus I found out Jesse works here. He was a friend like almost 25 years ago we.livedmon the same street and we recognized each other right-of-way the bat. As always. Today were helped by Scottie at the meat counter l, and he was awesome, and very easy going as the rest of the gang. I got my normal #2 barbecue chopped beef sandwhich. Store was clean, and smelled like BBQ as usual. I will always come here. The manager acknowledges the reviews matter the feedback. Been going to Pok-e-jos for over 25 years. The quality of the food has gone way down and customer service could be much better. The prices have been increasing for the past 3 years and are becoming out of reach for the average consumer. Sorry Pok-e-Jos no more. read more

The BBQ is pretty good, but the prices are outrageous for what you get. I usually spend 15 bucks for a turkey plate with two sides and a coke, and the serving sizes aren't exactly generous. Prices get downright insulting for 2 or 3 meat plates. read more
