Poke Dot is located in a busy plaza off MacArthur and Main and parking is pretty bad around lunch time. My coworker and I came around 11:00 am and the place was already packed. We waited for a bit, but if we came any later we would have been stuck in a long line. I have mixed feelings about their service and efficiency; a few of their workers were a bit unfriendly but the cashier ringing us up was very nice. ~~ For any Poke Newbies like my coworker, the process is pretty simple: Choose your size: - Large bowl w 5 scoops ($10.75) - Regular bowl w 3 scoops ($8.75) - Wrap ($8.75) Choose your base: salad, white rice, brown rice, chips or half and half Choose your mix: cilantro, cucumber, onion, crab meat, avocado Choose your protein: salmon, octopus, tuna, spicy tuna, shrimp, scallop or seasonal Seasonings and Sauces: house sauce (mild, medium, spicy), cilantro twist, spicy mayo, volcano, or seasonal sauce Toppings: jalapeno, ginger, sesame seeds, seaweed flakes, masago, green onions, tempura and wasabi ~~ My coworker ordered a regular bowl ($8.75) with half brown rice and half salad with cilantro, cucumbers, crab meat, avocado and all three scoops with shrimp with cilantro twist, tempura and jalapenos on the side. I ordered a regular bowl ($8.75) with brown rice, cilantro, crab meat, avocado, 2 scoops of salmon, 1 scoop of tuna, spicy mayo, ginger, wasabi and tempura flakes. I also ordered a tea ($1.75) and mixed a few of the options they had. I was happy that my coworker really enjoyed her poke bowl. She thought it was really good, but she doesn't really have anything to compare it too. I was much less impressed and Poke Dot just falls into my range of average Poke spots. The fish was not the freshest and their scoops were really small. They did not weigh and scale their poke like other places so they can easily skimp out on your protein. The one thing I really liked was that there was no up-charge for the avocado unlike other places. Overall the options were a bit limited but not even in the sense that everything was authentic. If the workers were nicer I might have been able to round this review up to a 4, but there was one thing I could not overlook about my experience at Poke Dot. My coworker actually noticed the same thing. The trays here had a very unappetizing stench even though they were recently washed. The smell was horrible. We regretted getting in 'for here' and we returned the trays as soon as we set out stuff down to the tables. Ok I REALLY wanted to like this place, and there are a lot of things to like about it: - fresh fish - VERY generous portion sizes and toppings, great bang for your buck - Crab meat, avocado, and seaweed salad are free - All toppings and sauces are flavorful and delicious - Staff are just lovely and I wish there was a way we could tip them when paying with credit card!! but but but HOW DO YOU FUCK UP RICE THIS BAD? The first time I ate it I was eating my way happily through the fish and the toppings until I got my first bite of rice and well... The white rice is dry, hard, cold (like 2-3 day old rice from the fridge), incredibly bland, and doesn't clump. It's also not sushi rice, or they managed to destroy sushi rice to the point beyond recognition. There is 0 flavor to this. I never realized that rice could taste like sawdust, but they found a way. I mean I would expect this from brown rice but not white rice! C'mon!! Looking at some other reviewers who said the rice was "fresh"...My heart weeps for you if this is the only rice you've known. Alas. You have been subjected to punishment rice and you don't even know it. The only thing this rice is good for is to make fried rice, not to put under poke as a frozen granite slab of blandness. It's not a fluke, either. I've tried this place 3 times now on different days and times, and the rice has been consistently bad. And sad. It's like someone smeared poop on the Mona Lisa, it would have been such a beautiful meal otherwise! It is really a shame because I would INSTANTLY give a full 5 stars if the rice was even just halfway decent. If thou art participating in the ritualistic self torture known as low carb diets - you'll be fine. Otherwise, rice lovers beware! I always find myself coming to Poke Dot at least once a week. Located just 2 minutes away from my work, this place seems to be the healthiest option in the area and I can still head back into work after lunch without being hit by food coma! THE MOOD: Poke Dot tends to get very busy! In fact, this place seems to be the busiest store in the plaza during lunch. So, come early (around 11:30 AM) or make sure you take a late lunch (after 1 PM) so you don't get stuck waiting in their long line. Think of Poke Dot's concept similar to Chipotle's. You start with your base (rice, salad, chips) and then you continue to go down the line selecting your veggies, then protein, sauce, and finally toppings to build your poke bowl. There is plenty of seating inside and outside, so even though it does get busy, I always seem to find a place to sit and eat. THE FOOD: The best thing I like about Poke Dot is that I get to build my own poke bowl. So I am always switching up what I am putting in my bowl. Sometimes I'll go for brown rice, sometimes half brown rice and half chips. I like to try their various sauces and I like always doubling up on my salmon. Be creative with their sauces! They mix in the various protein items and veggies in the sauce and it is laid on your best of rice/salad. THE 'TUDE: I usually have a good experience with all the employees here at Poke Dot. They keep the lines moving efficiently, especially during the lunch rush, and I always get service with a smile. I was provided a punch card & was told that if i bought 10 bowls, I would get the 11th bowl free. I carried that punch card around for about year and finally tried to redeem it after purchasing 10 bowls. I always buy a medium bowl & the cashier indicated that a completed punch card entitled me to receive the 11th bowl for the small bowl price and wouldn't be charged for a drink/soda. I spent $240+ and got a $3 dollar discount or 1.25% which is pathetic. I use to come here every Tuesday and my order has always been the same. Not once have I ever been charge extra for anything. A couple months ago when I went in I order my usual. However when I asked for masago they gave me half a scoop... so I asked for more and was told they would charge me extra.... What? You gave me half a scoop. So I declined. So I stopped going there. However today I decided to give it another try. I asked my husband to grab it since it's on the way home. I always ask for extra cucumber because I enjoy the crunch. However when he asked for more cucumber they told him they were going to charge him extra. Excuse.... I have never been told cucumber was extra... this place will try to charge you extra for everything. I should have had him go to my usual place uroko cafe. I'm just mind blown. I was introduced to this place by a co-worker and started going more often after trying it out. I would say food is usually great. It's fresh and the portions are 5/5 but sometimes if you order in the evening, it feels more like leftovers bec they actually are lol. They don't refill after a certain amount of time. The service also depends on who is there. They go from being absolute fantastic to a server who hates her job and doesn't want to be there. I ordered a regular poke which comes with 3 scoops (Tuna was bomb and Salmon was okay), mix (onion, crab meat, avo IS FREE YALL, +more), seasoning/sauce, and toppings! Overall my bowl was pretty decent sized and was actually very filling. Not only that but it was delicious! Lots of flavor and the fish tasted fresh. I got my lunch today and there was a grasshopper in my salad bowl....it is so disgusting I went talked to the store manager...he asked me if I ate outside or inside ...I said Togo then he said if you are eating outside then it is not our food issues...it is possible that grasshopper jumped into your bowl ... My co-worker and I arrived here at 11:30am, and to our dismay the line was out the door. There must have been about 30 people in front of us. The food here is good. Service needs work, however. My coworkers came here for the first time since I recommended it. I've never experienced bad service here until today at 12PM. The girl with long black curly hair who worked the protein line, was extremely rude. She looked like she hated her job, and we witnessed her giving an attitude and rolling her eyes at the nice customer ahead of us. If this is the service standard they're okay with, we may not come back. We normally go to Maka and decided to go here since its closer. What a disappointment. Updated my review to 1 star. Came back in for a refill, and again, she was rude to another customer. I think the boss or manager in the blue button up is here too. The poke assembly phenomenon is spreading ferociously in SoCal and I am not one to complain, not one bit. Most of these places are very much alike to each other and vary only in terms of price, sauces, toppings, and add-ons. They make their own twist that makes them favorable compared to the growing competition. For Poke Dot, what sets them apart is their huge portions, good customer service, and that their avocado is not only a heaping scoop, it is also included in the price. I like that they have cilantro and jalapeno as toppings though I wish they had garlic chips for a bolder taste profile. I went with the large bowl with half rice and half salad. I got spicy tuna, octopus, yellowtail, and doubled up on the salmon for my fish. All toppings added, yes. As for the sauce, I asked for their spicy house sauce. Fish was fresh and the portion was plenty, two very good things. The sauce is where they can probably work on as I find it a little weak. Purposely, I'm writing this review side by side with Uroko. Large Poke Salad is $10.75 with choice of 5 proteins. Best value I've encountered so far. Another place better than the one I have eaten at in Riverside. I've been a fiend for poke salad lately. I'm actually appetizing over the health idea and not feeling full and bloated after dinner. I'm gonna note that the large bowl may be a winsy bit bigger here, or I was just given a lot of salad. However, the amount of protein - a winsy bit less than Uroko's. Intentionally this a price comp. If I chose my travel distance for convenience, this one is much closer for my liking. I'm so glad they have cilantro too. My fave crunch are the tempura flakes. There seems to be more variety in their sauce flavors. This is located in The Square plaza amongst other eateries at the corner of Main and MacArthur. Small interior but nicely decored. Outdoor seating is available under nice palms or table umbies, and the area has free Wi-fi ! Service was friendly. They made sure to ask if I wanted anything else. Their fountain drink cups by the way are a good size. The young girl helping me was cleaning fingerprints off the glass while it was slow. Good workers at this location! I'm awarding 5 stars for customer service, convenience, value, cleanliness, welcoming character of the employees and the interior though cozy. P.S. They have catering!!! The smallest scoops I've ever seen for poke. Ever. It's quite strategic, actually, to limit the spoon size to begin with so that nobody is hating on the staff themselves...but oh wait...my scooper even felt compelled to put back some of the fish that the tiny spoon had managed to fit...smh... Needless to say, I was not a happy diner. The medium house sauce was decent, but I was too angry about the meal itself to appreciate the taste. Everything else is mediocre to the max. The person doing my toppings got cocky and tried to wait until I finished listing them off even when I waited to tell him as he went...lo and behold he gave me sesame seeds when I asked for seaweed...annoying. Chipoke. Build a bowl, whatever you call it is about as Poke as a Mai Tai (invented in Oakland).I could go on and on about how 99.9% of Poke here in socal is not how Hawaiians eat it, but you can ready my other poke reviews for bits and pieces of that. No kukui nuts, no ago, no limu, no ponzu, no yuzu, no citrus, no sushi rice. It's 2 star for poke, but I added a 3rd for a few small highlights. I can't say for sure if they are just latching onto the tail end of the Poke phase here in Socal, but they certainly could have done it better. At least 2 dozen places have been open that made mistakes which they fell into. Sizes are great, the large is large and the regular is, well regular. I always get the L because if you get white rice it's perfect, but anything but that makes it less filling. Small is small and what most people get because they are buying by price point rather than stomach point. The wrap to me is not worth the ingenuity as it's messy and not a real value. Décor is clean, uncluttered, open, but also a little bland. Imagine Tapioca Express mixed with Chipotle. They are in a wildly popular and jam packed busy shopping center with Flame broiler, starbucks, tokio grill, croutons, etc so parking sucks, but they have some seclusion being in the corner with less than popular outdoor seating behind the shops. Go half rice half salad or half chips in any combination. Those tiny ball scoopers moosh everything. They do not use sushi rice which sucks if you go white, both that and brown rice are dry, I like the chip option, but you have to plan it out well to really make proper use of that. Crab meat is dry, but at least they give you avo free fo charge. Cucumber is too thin and cilantro makes it taste like ceviche (not bad if you go shrimp, octopus, scallops). Shrimp is small and looks like grocery store thawed, tastes only slightly better, Spicy tuna is smooshed with little to no spice, tuna is nice and firm, fresh, chilled, salmon is a little soft and fatty, slightly less fresh. Yellowtail is like smaller, less firm tuna, octopus is thin, but not chewy (shape bears no cause on chewiness), scallops are meh. Staff is nice, helpful and service is fast, though at lunch it cane get backed up. I generally don't take my lunch until the 6 hour worked mark so beat the rushes. Soy and Sriracha have cups to fill up to go. The ventilation kind of sucks as it's always hot in there, I doubt they are properly using the overhead vents seeing as they have huge pots of rice going. Mild and medium have no heat, spicy barely has any, but at least you can tell their oil blends mix at least some sesame seed oil in there. Volcano and Spicy gives you creaminess and heat, but I'm looking for citrus at this point. Tempura flakes are weird here, but I get everything else. Musubi is boring and needs to be dipped in sauce. I mean I love spam, but this is pretty blah, no real char, no sauce, dry rice, not tightly wrapped. Seaweed salad is like 2 bites for $2.25 and not worth it. Value is so so, freshness is good, authenticity just shows how many people have actually been to Hawaii to consider this poke and those that have went as tourists and wouldn't know authentic if it bit them. Same long line as Pokinometry, actually, the line here may longer because people who work in Irvine have no where to go for Poke except for this place. Pick you base, pick your protein, pick your sauce, and pick you toppings. In addition to the usual toppings that everyone offers, they also offer cilantro, jalapenos, and tempura crumbs as toppings. I wasn't impressed with the bowl they made for me. The tuna was pink. It just didn't look right. The fish was full of sinew. Their scoops of fish is smaller than the other poke places I've been to. Their original spicy sauce bordered on having no taste, but, it tasted a lot better when I added soy sauce to it. Where was the spice in my spicy sauce? Too bad they aren't the same. Let's be honest - this poke trend is here to stay as new places are just opening up throughout SoCal. Nevertheless, my eyes still sparkled when I saw this new place so close in my area, making it easy to get my poke fix or even just a quick lunch/dinner if I'm feeling lazy. Just under $10 for the medium size, so not bad for Irvine/Newport! By now, you know the drill of these Chipotle-style bowls that give you so many ways to customize to your liking. I ordered mine to be Half & Half (Salad and Brown RIce) with 3 scoops of fish. I had my default mix - spicy tuna, salmon, and yellowtail - along with cucumber, imitation crab meat, onion, and avocado and toppings like sesame seeds, seaweed flakes, masago, and green onion, in which ALL of this was included in the base cost (awwww yeeee!!!) I opted for the medium spicy, and although it tasted more like mild to me, I was content with that level so that I can actually taste the fish without it being drenched in sauce. FYI, the spicy mayo actually does pack some heat, so don't get caught off-guard! Brown rice could be cooked a little better - a little on the dry side, but not a dealbreaker for me. The medium size left me pretty content and stuffed, but not to the extent of a full-blown food baby. The fish was decently fresh for what you pay for and the service was really friendly. It's one of the few places still open "late" aka after 6pm, so it doesn't only cater to corporate business hours like its neighbors, Croutons and Flame Broiler. When I come back next time, I'll definitely try the Wrap instead of a bowl and see how it compares to Sushirrito in NorCal :) Off to continue on my poke adventure...! read more

Guac doesn't cost extra! Yay! Line was relatively long when we showed up at 1:15pm on a warm Thursday afternoon, BUT it does move quite swiftly so don't get discouraged from giving it a try! So why only 3 stars? I think quality of poke isn't quite up to par with a Bear Flag Fish Co. or Calipoke. Portions are a tad smaller as well if my memory serves me right.
