My bff from El Salvador has been wanting to take me here for the longest time, and we finally were able to when she visited me in the city. I know Pollo Campero is huge in El Salvador. My bff tells me that flights from there back to the US would smell of their chicken as everyone bought some to take home! We were lucky to get a table within 20 minutes. The restaurant is an average space, and it was packed, with a line forming outside. During that time, there was a special for $8.99: 2 pieces of chicken, 3 nuggets, fries, and a dinner roll. It's usually $10. Because it was my first time, I figured I would get the fried chicken, even though the nuggets were also fried. Both were good, perhaps a bit salty. That dinner roll was delicious, and I could've used a couple more to make some chicken sliders. The fries were standard. We had an issue with out bill because they charged us the full price for the special. We had to point to the window to show them what the special pricing was in order for them to change the bill. Because the place was busy, it wasn't very clean. The bathrooms were kinda gross. I would hope that during the downtime they are able to clean everything up. You can order online, and there's a hallway separated from the main dining area where you can order to go. I'd like to come back here to try their grilled chicken, and some other sides. read more

Let me start by saying the chicken sandwich is the truth, in someone's else's words! It taste nothing like the other competitors. The Mango doesn't taste artificial. The wait time is about 30mins if not more. and Yes, the customer service is...When I arrived its a sign that says, wait to be seated, however all the host and waiters are running around. They seem to cater to dine in only, it's like a Sizzler without the salad bar, that severs only chicken and sides. No Mac and cheese, but there is the most creaminess coleslaw I ever seen. I was unaware that there is another door to use for take out orders, so I casually walked in the dinning room with all of my shopping bags. We also picked tortillas and dinner roll for our bread options. It was around $20 + tip. The food arrived within 30 minutes and everything was warm except for the fries. They were soggy & floppy with no flavor whatsoever. This is where I subtract a star. However, everything else was delicious! I've had the chicken before (someone brought it to a potluck) and it lived up to my memories. I had the thigh and leg and they were both great, although there wasn't too much meat on the leg. My bf had a breast, leg, and wing and said the breast was best (it does come with an upgrade fee though). The yucca fries were great with the sauce, and pretty crispy. This is my second attempt to give them another try. The first time i came they had ran out of a lot of food as we wanted to order different things. The service was okay nothing too crazy with this place always being busy. Ones we received the food the rice and beans where cold and didn't find much flavor as we remember it. The chicken was delicious and i give them the stars for staying with same great chicken seasoning. The ambiance is always busy and laud it seems that they still need work ok writing things down i had to call the waiter to my table a couple of time for simple things such as napkins and forgetting items. The whole time I ate, I was wondering if this was a local chicken restaurant because the chicken was very lean and tasted so much healthier than KFC. The only thing that threw me off was the packaging. It looked like chain food packaging. Surprisingly, this is a in fact a franchise! Pollo Campero gets 3 stars sheerly out of nostalgia. I have fond memories of eating it in El Salvador and having relatives bring it on TACA as they visited us in Los Angeles. We would pick them up at LAX and the airport would smell like Pollo Campero with all the Salvadorians who brought it back since at the time there was no Pollo Campero in the United States. Fast forward to today. Super happy a Pollo Campero opened up on Mission and 24th since Los Angeles got one years ago. The chicken is good. Seems pretty comparable to what you get in central america. The service? Good god. I ordered chicken, platanos and rice and I got beans and yucca instead. They are very confused. Despite that the food was good. The platanos are not the best I've had but the chicken lives up to its reputation (for a fast food). Truthfully, my favorite chicken in SF is limon rotisserie (Peru) and Sol Food (Puerto Rican) in San Rafael. None have the nostalgic value that Pollo Campero has. Now here I was thinking Pollo Campero was going to be a hip new place to eat in the Mission only to discover that this is part of a hugely popular fried-chicken chain in Guatemala. I guess the dead giveaway should have been the big video-store-style sign that's about five times brighter than any other sign on the block. It caught my eye as I was looking for a bite after a late night at work. Funny thing is that a woman has to let you in through the front door. She asked whether I wanted to eat inside or make an order to go. I'm not sure if you're led elsewhere for takeout, but I was able to get a table smack in the middle of the compact eatery. The place was brightly lit and filled with big groups of people - families, co-workers, beer buddies - blocking the aisles where I became easy target practice for aggressive customers looking for a shortcut to their tables. Everything looked new, even the laminated menus with bold colors and photos of all the variations of chicken they serve - fried, grilled, as strips, in soups, inside empanadas - in quantities from two pieces to sixteen. They're not kidding about their slogan- a "passion for pollo". I really wanted to try their Peruvian Citrus Grilled Chicken which apparently goes through a 12-hour marinade and a slow grill. Alas, I was told they were out. That meant I was saddled with the significantly more calorific Campero Traditional Fried Chicken, three pieces (two legs and a thigh) for $7.29 with two sides (see photo). Even though it was described as having breading infused with "Latin spices", I really couldn't tell. It just tasted like Popeye's but maybe a little less crusty. Not that tasting like Popeye's is such a bad thing, but since there is one close by, it made me wonder why I was paying extra for table service and getting the same-level-quality chicken. What was definitely better were the sides, a fresh Cole Slaw and a hearty albeit paltry-size serving of the Black Beans & Rice. Service was awfully slow considering how much staff was milling about. FOOD - 3 stars...passable fried chicken but the calorie count is through the roof (over 1,000 calories)...the sides are better than expected AMBIANCE - 3 stars...too bright for me and I'm not getting the value-add of having table service here SERVICE - 2.5 stars...quite nice but so slow, just looked overstaffed to me TOTAL - 3 stars...wish it was more unique than it was but it probably fills a void for hungry families and bachelors read more

Pollo Campero has been open about 10 days & still very popular. Before 11am there wasn't a line to eat in, but after 11am about a 15 min wait to get a table. There's a separate door for Take-out orders. Lady came out & got our name & how many, but they didn't seat me any faster being solo, just had to wait until I got to the front of the line. Sysco delivered the packaged food. Security guards handed out menus, they are also hiring at the restaurant if you need a job. I picked Peruvian citrus grilled 1/4 grilled (leg & thigh) dark & 2 sides $6.49 on the take-out menu. I picked black beans & white rice (counted as one side small portion with both), & Green salad. They didn't ask me if I wanted tortillas or dinner roll, they just gave me one dinner roll too. Chicken was average, not dry though good thing. Black beans & white rice - average. Green salad - just a boring green salad with some sliced tomato slices. Salad dressing was fine. Ask for green salsa - a bit spicy. Separate bathrooms in the back left. Good intentions, nothing wrong but they need to make it more clear. We ordered the chicken (of course) oh boy!!!! second to KFC. I love the spices. But i feel like i can make it at home. I wish I asked for the recipe. It was so good. THe mash taste different to me. Like....candy. BUT it was still really good. I got a roll of bread, wish i hadn't i didn't eat it. I love me some Guatemalan Fried Chicken! Not only is it better than KFC, but the sides are a lot more exciting than mashed potatoes and coleslaw (even though they have those too). Especially worthwhile now that Popeye's is gone from the neighborhood. Chips & Salsa: Your food doesn't come out immediately, so the free chips and salsa help whet your appetite. The chips are thick and likely made in-house. The salsa is smoky with a little kick. Fried Chicken: Better than KFC, but not as good as Popeye's. The batter is a bit thin, but there is still a bit of a crunch and very moist meat underneath The spices are more distinct than mainstream fried chicken. Yuca Fries: Probably my favorite part of the meal, since I love me some thick-cut crispy yuca. A nice spicy mayo dipping sauce too. Beats fries (and most sides) hands down. Campero Beans: Tasted more like smoky chili than a simple bean side. Could be a meal by itself when paired with the corn tortillas! However since I've written reviews on ethnic places that are known for their fried chicken such as Marharlika (Filipino) and Texas Chicken (Halal) I should be consistent when it comes an American classic served at non-American eateries. The first thing about this place is it is run like a fast food place but acts more like a restaurant - you get the bill at the end of your meal. Their twist on the fried chicken is that you can taste the lime in the chicken. Their fried chicken is moist and tender. The fried chicken also has that crispy skin but also not oily. I have eaten at this location twice. The first time was meh. I ate here yesterday and receive two pieces of overcooked fried chicken and two dried overcooked pieces of grilled chicken. Hint: once the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees, it is cooked. I also got some coleslaw, some plantains, and a roll. I got the app and placed an order for a 12Noon pickup. When I got there at 12:10, my food wasn't ready yet. I had to wait another 20 minutes. As I was waiting outside, I saw an ad for an offer cheaper than what I paid on my app. It was more chicken and less money. So for future reference, it is better to order in person instead of using the app. The drawback, however, is that there is hardly any street parking, and the neighborhood has a lot of transients. You'll have to wait on the street for about an hour. Ok...let's talk about food. The food was fresh. I ordered the fried chicken and the rotisserie chicken. The rotisserie chicken beats the fried chicken in taste and texture. The fried chicken does not beat Popeye's, but it beats KFC and all of those Filipino chicken places. Chicken is tender, moist, and flavorful. I didn't taste elevated spice or chili in any of my food. Family meals with more pieces are on the menu. Rice or tortillas are options. I sampled the crispy fried chicken and chicken tortilla soup. Both were prepared fresh and delicious. The soup was not spicy, but it was tasty. My sides were roasted corn and salad. The tamarindo beverage was refreshing, not very tart and not too sweet. At first service was attentive, but it got slower as the restaurant filled up, and the number of take out orders increased. We had four different staff wait on us, or helped us out. They were all very nice and pleasant. Our waiter was able to apply a 10% discount that I found on their website. Experience this dining experience to decide for yourself. Large enough dining space with good amount of tables that fill up fast during peak hours. As a Peruvian I had to check this place out. Even at 3pm there was a line out the store and down the block of loyal customers. I decided to enter the seperate togo entrance tho and was in and out quick. Atmosphere inside is nice and modern tho not your typical mission st dive. They mainly offer fried chicken and grilled peruvian style herb chicken. Im usually a fried kinda guy but went authentic with half a grilled chicken and 2 sides which I also upgraded to peruvian sides yucca fries and sweet plantains. It also comes with a roll and some tasty sauces. The chicken was delicious tho a bit on the small side. The yucca fries were on point and 2nd only to those at pica pica arepa in this area. The coleslaw & yuca fries are very tasty. The horchata is quite sweet but great! I wouldn't say it's a hole in the wall but pretty close.
