After passing this place a million times, the SO and i finally dropped by. I workout at Pop Physique a lot, and often see lots of family here. We came early on a Sunday morning right before the rush. Pollo Campero is actually a sit down restaurant (with a take out option) that is fast (ish) and known for their fried and lime grilled chicken. By 12, the line for seating was almost out the door, so i'm glad we came super early. I ordered their grilled chicken, which was delicious and super moist. My only complaint is the portion---it's on the smaller side. If you're from SoCal, the concept of this restaurant reminds me of EL Pollo Loco but with more citrus flavor in their grilled chicken. My BF ordered the boneless chicken pieces (nuggets). Dont order this, it's like 5 small pieces of chicken for $10 with a side. You're better off ordering that from Mickey Ds across the street. I've been taking my time to re-learn The Mission--so much has changed, some is the same, but it's been quite the experience. I was craving fried chicken and I remembered a friend told me about Pollo Campero. In short--my craving was more than satisfied. Fried chicken is probably one of my favorite foods. The fried chicken from Pollo Campero was pretty stellar for fast casual. There's a seasoning in the skin that I couldn't put my finger on, but I enjoyed it. The chicken was hot in temperature and very juicy, which is a tell for me that there's flavor. That's what I loved, the food was flavorful and that is definitely something I remember about growing up here. Also, I got the corn salad as one of my sides and I am OBSESSED with it! I came in to try this place because there is usually a line here on the weekends. I wanted to try both the grilled and fried chicken and asked the server if I could get a mix of fried and grilled pieces. The server confirmed yes so I was looking forward to trying this. (My back up plan was to order one of each and mix them myself). I ordered a plate to eat in and a plate to take home for my daughter. When my order came, my worst fears came true. The plate was all grilled and not mixed as I asked and I tried to get the server's attention but gave up after a few minutes. (Look even KFC can get mixed grill and fried pieces correct). I just said screw it, I will eat this, and hope they don't mess up the take out order. Too much hassle and i was hungry. The server didn't check back at all (it wasn't that busy). After 15 minutes, the take out order comes out with the check and I looked inside and saw it was incorrect as well. They screwed up the order again. Sigh. Since I had the check, I tried to see if there was something entered incorrectly. I could see, however, that the server entered the order correctly, even specifying which piece was fried and which piece was grilled, but the kitchen cooked it wrong and the person delivering the food didn't bother to check the ticket. Here is where this review gets more bizarre. I pointed out the error on the take out order to the server that I ordered mixed grilled and friend pieces and got all grilled pieces, he gives me an apology, but he DOESN'T offer to fix it. What the heck? I am pointing out an obvious error and you don't even offer to fix my order? He just said sorry and walked away. I just shook my head. By now, if I asked him to fix my order, things will just go downhill from here. I officially give up. So I finishing checking the rest of the and I find out that the kitchen forget the dinner roll. Okay, that's three mistakes now on 2 dishes . This time, I ask the server to bring out the missing dinner roll. He finally does after several minutes and I am pretty much done with this place. I don't see myself coming back again. There are too many other places to go to to deal with a place that can't get the order correct. Now for the food, it's okay, it feels like overpriced fast food, but SF is expensive. It's decent enough for when you are hungry, but I wouldn't wait in line for this. Back in the summer time, I heard that Pollo Campero will be opening in San Francisco. I still have the first Los Angeles location on West Olympic Blvd as one of my bookmarked businesses. Nevertheless, a welcoming addition to the first in the Bay Area and in the Mission district, which opened December 10, 2012. According to Bernardo, my waiter, the newest location is the first with dining service. Other locations are primary a takeout with a fast food concept. But I don't know if the other locations are a bigger venue, in comparison to new small location (with a maximum capacity of approximately 50) with a long line and wait. I had to wait about 20 minutes waited to be seated and standing in the abrupt cold and windy December night in the Mission. Many of the waiting people were impatient. Heck, they should wait at places like Blue Bottle or Phil's BBQ in San Diego. Now those places have longer lines! And after that painful 20 minute wait where the bright light restaurant was nice and warm in the inside, from the menu I ordered the Peruvian Grilled Chicken meal with a choice of two sides. For $6.99, I get a breast and wing that were marinated and spiced for 12 hours before being cooked on the grill in the restaurant's kitchen. I also got a side of fries, Campero's rice made with their own recipe and a pair of warm corn tortilla. And for an additional $1.99, I also got a spicy chicken empananda. While waiting for my food, I also get a basket of warm tortilla chips and salsa. The chips were thick and really crispy with a powerful crunch. The moist and juicy Peruvian chicken is a better alternative than the popular fried chicken, in which many of the dining parties ordered as I was enjoying my meal. As a recent health-freak, this is a very healthy dish. On the way to our table, we took note of the full house, mostly families. I don't think I've ever been to a fast food-type joint with table service. When I asked what they were, our waitress brought us a sample of Crispy Sticks (fried strips of flour tortillas covered in cinnamon sugar w/ a dipping sauce that resembled dulce de leche.) We each ordered a 2-piece meal (1 breast, 1 wing)--fried chicken for me, citrus grilled chicken for him (so he could try both.) Fried chicken was not super crispy, but it was crinkly in a satisfying way. Inside was super, super moist...lots of delicious flavor. Served with tortilla (my favorite accompaniment for chicken) & I could not stop with their amazing green sauce. Yucca fries were just so-so; not crisp enough on the outside & not seasoned. I drove almost an hour with my Salvadoran girlfriend and her parents to hit this place. I've been to a Pollo Campero in the Los Angeles area that was very much like a KFC, just a bit better. This Pollo Campero is a little different. The wait wasn't bad at all for a dine-in table. The four of us hung around for about 25 minutes until our names were called. I found it funny they had security guards watching the lines. The filipino looking security guard was rather rude. The place is crammed and my big fat white ass barely fit between the aisles as we were escorted to our table. The biggest difference from this location and the one I have been to in Los Angeles is this location has waiter service. Personally, I'd take the fast-food style of the Los Angeles locations. Elsy was our server and was helpful, but looked distressed. All of the other servers were running about, but seemed efficient and helpful as I people watched the surrounding tables. The chips & salsa they first bring to your table were soggy and oily. The salsa had no flavor. No biggie. My girlfriend ordered a 12 piece mixed chicken meal with campero beans, rice, and coleslaw. She also got an order of the plantains. The wait for the food was no more than ten minutes after ordering. From a fat white guy's point of view, the chicken is almost the same as KFC/Popeyes. The main difference to me is the batter on the Campero skin is not nearly as heavy/thick as that of KFC and didn't taste nearly as salty. The coleslaw was... so-so. I'd take KFC's coleslaw over it. The rice was forgettable, but the campero beans were tasty. I've had plantaines at a lot of places and I can easily say the Pollo Campero plantaines are some of the best. They were cooked just right: great texture and oh so sweet! I'd also recommend the sweet tea if you can't make up your mind on the drinks. The service was less attentive once we had our food and it was a pain flagging someone for a refill on my drink, but overall I wasn't disappointed with the service. Would I make the two hour round trip and struggle with finding parking again just to eat Pollo Campero again? Probably not. Will I visit Pollo Campero the next time I'm in Los Angeles? OK... so the only time I dont take pictures of my food is when I am in hulk form for food due to starvation. This was one of those times. My friends took me here on a Wednesday afternoon and there was no line. *whew* avoided the 45 minute wait. The waiter had to open the door for us because it can only open from the inside if we wanted to dine in. A take out line had a separate entrance on the other side. I was looking forward to try their Peruvian Grilled Chicken, however they stopped making it so I decided to give their traditional fried chicken a chance with the black beans and rice. I believe I got the leg and thigh deal for about $6. It was very tender and juicy and not one bit dry but not overly greasy. I could see why everyone raves about the chicken here. Our spectacular meal left us stunned, extremely satisfied and happy. Come here to eat great food. Period. We had their mouth watering traditional hand breaded, seasoned and fried tasty fried chicken. It was seasoned incredibly well. It's extremely flavorful. I ordered the Campero rice which was lightly seasoned and had some tomatoes, garlic and onion. I had their ice tea which was so refreshing and delicious, I could've drank it forever. I don't know what they put in their tea but it tastes like a southern sweet tea with a raspberry flavor.
