I was craving some tacos on my way home after being stuck in traffic and knew I was going to drive by El Gran Taco Loco and decided to grab some tacos to go. I had some credit with DoorDash, so I made an order since I was 5 minutes away. Knowing how fast they are at making the food, I knew it would be ready when I got there. I drove down Ocean and made a left on Mission Street, found a parking spot a few feet from El Gran Taco, and walked in. The place had the same ambiance as I've always known, seats for people to dine in, friendly staff, and a large menu to order from. I headed over to the pickup spot, which is next to the cashier, right where the sauces are, let them know my name, and she quickly grabbed my order as it was finished cooking, wrapped it up, and got me on my way. Open until midnight, El Gran Taco Loco is a good option for late night dining. I was surprised how clean it was for a late night restaurant. The Santa and elf statues are still up. That put me in a good mood. My taco salad $18.20 was small. I was still hungry when I left. It felt unbalanced with a lot of sour cream. It needed more lettuce and tomatoes and less beans and rice. It comes with a small side of chips. The salsa was already presorted into small cups by the water dispenser. I didn't see an actual salsa station. I had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. I came to pick up a DoorDash order and politely asked to use the restroom because it was an emergency. The staff refused and told me the restroom was only for customers. I felt disrespected and poorly treated, even though I was there to help deliver their customer's order. I ordered a chicken taco, the carne asada nachos & an agua fresca through their delivery system. I received a chicken taco, chicken nachos & an horchata. The chicken taco was packed full with lots of meat, onion, cilantro & salsa. It has a nice kick to it, the flavors all together were really nice. The chicken by itself was less flavorful but it shows you how well the combination goes together when all the pieces are there. The nachos were nice and packed in. The chips were stale when put under the food, thicker than usual but then they were thin, soggy and hard to pickup. I wasn't super impressed by the flavors even when I was intentionally getting it all in one bite. I wish I could've had the carne asada. The horchata is thick and delicious and was the reason why i gave 3/5 stars instead of 2. While the food that I was given was yummy, I would've loved to have known what I had ordered tasted like. I don't think I would return in the future but I hope you try it & make your own opinion! I would recommend going in and picking your food up yourself and checking it before you leave. read more

Everytime I have ordered so far, I have gotten great food! I usually order taco plates for myself and my boyfriend and my father get super burritos. I order on grubhub, since I live a bit far from the restaurant, but love the food! Taco plates come with 3 tacos and rice and beans... the rice is very good! the beans are delicious as well.. This place has been making really delicious tripas burritos, and is currently my favorite burrito spot. My pro tip is to ask for extra crispy tripas because it makes a huge difference! When they're extra crispy, they are easier to chew and more tasty. If I feel like switching things up, I get the tacos or the tostada salad. I don't really like the nachos too much because I have a personal preference of having less toppings so that the chips stay nice and crispy. I like that this place looks so clean too. It's a little hole in the wall spot that's easy to drive right past and there's almost no parking near there so you gotta get lucky, but it absolutely worth it. I used to love to go to El Gran Taco Loco late at night at their old location near Cortland in Bernal Heights. My go-to menu items were lengua quesadilla and shrimp cocktail. Recently I visited their current (new) location and found that they no longer offer lengua and prices have gone up quite a bit. I ordered a quesadilla with Al Pastor and a shrimp cocktail for old times' sakes. My bill was approx $35 for 2 items (take-out, without tips). The cook wasn't friendly. I tried asking a question but he wouldn't even look at me. Alright, cool. The food was just so-so since there's no lengua and if you ask for Carne Asada, you have to pay something like $2 extra. The shrimp cocktail was still good but a tad too sweet I don't remember it being this sweet? Oh well. I satisfied my craving for nostalgia.
