Lured by a billboard along Interstate 710 north, I pulled into this chicken restaurant. I had people at home to feed so the "10 pieces for $13" offer really sounded attractive. Easy, right? Not even. First of all, the parking lot of the shopping center was packed to the gills. Then, when I asked the cashier about the offer I saw on the billboard, she had to call a colleague over because she couldn't hold a conversation in English. Next, her colleague tells me it is 10 pieces for $13, not the $12 I thought I read. OK. Fine. I could have gotten that wrong or the price could have gone up. When I asked for the grilled chicken, I was told they only had fried and that I needed to wait 30 minutes for grilled chicken to come out. I would have been home by then. I asked for a two-piece meal and was assured they had enough grilled chicken to fill that order, but it would be a breast and a wing. No problem, I thought. The chicken must have been under a heat lamp or something. I didn't see one, but the chicken came out dry and overcooked. I was disappointed . My side of campero pinto beans was decent. We ordered a full chicken with a side of beans and it totaled about $20.00 (boooo!) which is really expensive compared to other chicken places. So (drum-roll please) no it wasn't "the best chicken ever." I actually prefer KFC extra crispy over Pollo Campero. It had a good taste and it wasn't dry or orver cooked, BUT the skin was NOT crispy (double boooo!). I wouldn't go to the extreme of putting it in the BEST EVER category. A friend introduced me to this restaurant a few years ago, and to say the least, I was skeptical when he was telling me about it. Why? It's a Guatamalan fried chicken chain, and fried chicken is about as American as apple pie. (And that begs the question, how do you categorize this restaurant?) As my friend said I would, after trying the food, I liked it. The chicken is very good. The spices in the breading is good but it's not quite as good or as crunchy as KFC, but what makes this chicken special is that it's marinated before being fried lending a unique and juicy flavor to the meat. Most fried chicken you eat for the skin. This is one fried chicken you can eat for the meat. The sides aren't as good as the chicken. They do have decent rice and beans (belying the restaurant's Latin American origin) but if like KFC coleslaw, I recommend staying away from the Pollo Campero coleslaw. And, if you like that kind of thing, this is the only fried chicken restaurant I know of that features a salsa bar though I've never had occasion to use it. read more

Beats Pollo Loco hands down.... chicken marinated in a citrus-based marinade balanced with a unique blend of spices that all blend well together, then lightly coated and fried perfectly. Not at all overtly spicy (although they do have a really substantial green and red salsa available) but exceptionally flavorful, like most Guatemalan food. The sides aren't that great, with the exception of the plantains... which are always perfectly cooked and really delicious!
