I'm from the east coast. Pennsylvania. Philly, Pittsburgh, lived in Jersey, DC. God do I miss the history, the timeless resistance, the legacy, the dive bar experience. I moved here in 2013 from Pittsburgh. I can go to any strip mall or plaza now in 2020 and will bet more often than not that if I were to go to the same AZ bar now it will not be what was there in 2013. One of a few rare exceptions is Pommys. The bartenders are your friends. The music is a vibe. The food is classic pub. Beers are ICE cold. It's dark. The last thing I want is for someone to see the misery of my workday at the bar. Thankfully for me and others, Pommys helps to prevent that scenario. I love the pool, the darts, the getting a drink at the bar within minutes, the classic retro cash register, the little emphasis on sports, the actually being open til 2am every night. I've been here with my girls on several occasions and we always have fun. This watering hole has all the necessities, jukebox aka ApplePlay, pool tables, shuffle board, darts, pinball, and a fun staff who knows how to pour a good/friendly drink. The crowd is an eclectic mix, I've been hit on by all ages, colors and sizes. Worst experience ever! The bartender was such a bitch to us for no reason! It was unbelievable. We had a group of about 10 people on a week day and we were the only people there. She had an attitude and rolled her eyes anytime we spoke to her. I ordered ONE DRINK and left a $0 tip. When I went to check my bank account the next day I saw that SHE TIPPED HERSELF $8. I hadn't been to pomeroys in years but I remember how much I used to love this bar. It was one of my favorite spots back in the day. Their Cajun turkey sandwiches were soo good. I was with a friend today from out of town and it's been a long time since I've been out to a bartender so I thought I would take him to the bar I used to love. We walk into the bar and walk up to the female bartender (it was super loud and pretty busy and I am also a bartender by the way) and she was writing something on her notebook so I politely asked her"excuse me hun, can I please order a drink from you when you get a sec?". (She continued to write on her notebook) so I waited until she was done and looked up and then I repeated, "excuse me hun could I please get a drink from u when u get a sec?" She looked at me with this dirty look and said" I'm doing something right now I'll get to you when I'm done" and then proceeded to roll her eyes at me. The guy standing next to me was like" wow" so I went to the other end of the bar to ask the guy bartender for a drink. He told me to hold on a sec and went to the back, then the chicken bartender walked to the side of the bar I was on and stopped right in front of me to make a drink and I was like " could I please get a drink form you when you het a sec? " she then rudely stated" Not from me you cant" I tried to tell the suposed manager about the incident and he didn't even try to listen to ehat happened he just kicked me out. I have never been treated so disrespectful or rudely by someone in the hospitality business before in my life. A friend of mine suggested this place some 20+ yrs ago as a Browns Backer bar. Popped in a few times for a quick one when on that side of town. So, so dated decor, perfectly fine for a local "Dive Bar". That being the said, why the $4.00 Domestic Pint prices?! Popped in one Happy Hour, apparently PBR wasn't discounted. Even so PBR= $4.00 Pint?! Took in the tail end of the Browns game Sunday with the wife. We shared the Slider appetizer, took 20mins. Sent it back undercooked. Replaced within 10mins and was very good. Way too much Competition in this area. Find your niche! Ive read the Yelp revues(Not the 5star fluff),adjust your pricing, respect your Regulars! Pomeroy's would be great if every other bar in Central Phoenix were overrun by Zombie's and Pomeroy's was the only safe haven. Unfortunately, the older male bartender there was so incredibly rude to my group of 10 or so people with me, that we decided to take our business elsewhere. I'm actually glad the bartender made it an easy decision to take our money elsewhere, because the interior was incredibly dirty, smelled of smoke, was not compliant with health code, and the bathrooms were horrid. Dive bar? Ok, I suppose you call it that, but HB Hanratty's, which is just down the street, is so much better than this hole in the wall pit stop. I really have a hard time calling Pomeroy's a dive bar and, when challenged, I can't completely justify why I have this struggle. Sure, the tables are carved up with things like "Yelp" and "I am RAD" (Heya, Julia!!) and the seating is like an unupholstered school bus bench. Sure, there's multicolored, tinsel, holiday lights hanging around the pool area. Sure, they sell Schlitz and PBR - and Michelob 64. And, of course, the pièce de résistance: 1-ply TP... But, those dudes in the kitchen know how to work a flat top grill! Menu offerings (besides the cracker jacks and Gardetto's snacks for purchase behind the bar) include hot dogs, burgers (I am SO getting a patty melt next time), chicken and other grilled sandwiches. There are also some salad options if you're not feelin' the grease. But the highlight for me is the green chile! And, they'll put it on anything! It's like I'm back in New Mexico!! First time I went, I had the turkey green chile melt ($7.75). Last night, I enjoyed a grilled cheese ($3.95) and asked them to add green chile. It was perfect! Big strips! Enough for chile in every bite! Sandwiches are served with a choice of fries, fruit, salad, cottage cheese or chips - but really?! When fries are involved is there REALLY a choice? In this case there is because they even have a couple of different types of fries (crinkle, wedge or shoestring)! I guess that's the dilemma: When I think of going to Pomeroy's I am as excited about the 15 beers on tap and cheap cocktails as I am about the food! I've thought about going to Pomeroy's for lunch on a weekday - without even the intention of sneaking a brew in the middle of the work day! However, when we asked for the chili fries and onion ring combo, the bartender asked where our dad was, thinking we were 12 year olds despite all of us being of age. Jokingly, we said one of our friends was our dad; the bartender did not think that was funny and proceeded to tell us to leave. Great food! Great company! Jokes aren't free. Was not a bad place until I cashed out. The bartender asked if I needed anything and I replied with a beer and could I cash out. He brought me a beer and helped customers at the other end of the bar. I sat at the bar for 10 min while they helped other customers. Finally he came back and asked if I needed anything (cashing out two people next to me before hand) I asked him if I could cash out. He brought me my tab and I decided that because I waited at the bar so long to not tip. I understand the job and the demands as I have done it in the past myself. Long story short I will never got back to this bar. The bar tender (short and long curly hair) decided that because he didn't get a tip he was going to cause a scene. He decided to yell at me and kick me out. He told me a I needed to fucking leave. I get that he was upset. There is no need to yell at a customer who felt he didnt get the greatest service. I've been coming to Pomeroy's for the last 13 years. I'm familiar with all the "dives" in this area but Pomeroy's is by and far the best. Bartenders are awesome and food is pretty damn good too. They have pool tables, darts, and the shuffleboard and music via TouchTunes. The crowd is very diverse which makes the music choices fun and interesting and it's always a relaxed atmosphere here. I'm sometimes just not in the mood to dress up, get fancy, and go to a trendy, classy bar. This is the perfect place to have some good bar food and pitcher of beer. I've been here awhile ago and just went back the other night, forgot how big this place is. Has a couple pool tables and two dart boards, then I think some other games. I was a little tipsy so I don't remember EVERYTHING...oops. But i'll definitely come back. If there is a few of you drinking beers, get a pitcher as it is cheaper. The area is nice, right across the street from The Yard. I would pick this place over the yard any day, just wish it had outdoor seating or a back patio. Dive bar heaven. I second Dallas' review. This place is a sh*thole, and I love it. I got served right away every time. Some people said it was because I had boobs. Not like I can help that. ;) The bartender may or may not have lent me his knife, so I could carve something special into the table. I may or may not be the a-hole who carved-- I AM RAD. They made me a grilled cheese 40 minutes after the kitchen closed. I was also told this was because I had boobs. I thought it was my unbelievable charm. That grilled cheese was amazingly delicious. I danced, even there was no dance floor. I loudly sang Keep on Loving You with about ten friends, while the majority of the bar looked at us in horror, and I can't sing for sh*t. I played Dirty Diana & Poison by Bel Biv DeVoe, and most of the place was singing along with Poison. Considering the crowd, this was awesome & hilarious. The bathroom was fouler that any gas station I've ever seen on a road trip, as luck would have it I was so drunk by the time I got in there, that I didn't care. It was way too cold. I put on a sweater, which I took off while dancing to Dirty Diana later. Yes, I was that girl, and this was that night. If you can't have fun here, well, I can't help you. And I can say that with great confidence because believe it or not, I wasn't drunk, so I could actually taste it : ) Be prepared to wait though, because the service for certain members of our party (sorry Jordan) was SLOW.
