Went here for a birthday and had a wonderful time with wonderful food!! To start our servers were very friendly and Jojo was very knowledgeable of the entire menu, including describing the daily specials and the flavors/ingredients of each dish we ordered. To start we got the lobster crawfish wontons and the seafood spring rolls. The lobster crawfish wontons have a Cajun cream cheese inside which was a flavor bomb, and the wontons were fried crispy but not oily. The sauce on top helped to cut through the richness of the wonton stuffing. It was a delicious appetizer!! The seafood spring rolls were massive, again a really good fry on them with the skin being thin and super crunchy but not overdone. The seafood inside was generous, but I would say the flavor was more just of the seafood itself instead of any special seasoning. Still good, but we preferred the wontons more! The mains were the lobster fried rice and the drunken noodles. The lobster fried rice had a gochujang flavoring but didn't have as much of a wok sear in my opinion, but was still good! The lobster was fried beautifully, where the meat was super soft and the fry on the outside was crunchy! It also came with these fried kale chips that were sooooo good, these chips had so much flavor!! My favorite was the drunken noodles, which had a lot of flavor from the wok sear and a slightly sweet and spicy sauce. We asked for chili on the side, and definitely think the added heat made this dish much more flavorful. The lobster here was also really good and well buttered! For dessert, we shared the matcha crème Brulee which was fantastic, strong matcha flavor that was tempered with the creaminess of crème Brulee. The torched sugar on top was superrrr well done, super crunchy and probably one of the best sugar torching on crème Brulee I have had!! In between each item, Jojo would clean our plates and table, and we saw him also ensuring everyone's dish was cooked to their liking. Everyone seemed to really care about the quality of the food and it made for a really nice experience! I would say the ambiance is dim lit casual to upscale, great for work events, date nights, etc. Overall a great place for flavor packed food with exceptional service!
I finally treated myself to Poor Calvin's after hearing about it for years. It's honestly a little embarrassing it took me this long, but I'm one of those people who hears about a restaurant and somehow doesn't make it there until years later. I ordered several dishes to get a good feel for the menu. Ordered: * Crab Beignets * Lobster & Scallop Drunken Noodles * Lobster Mac & Cheese * Midnight Sticky Ribs Overall, I'd give it 4 out of 5. The presentation was excellent, and I can definitely see why it's become an Atlanta favorite. However, I don't think the food fully lives up to the reputation it's built over the last decade. The crab beignets were the clear standout. They were creative, unique, and easily my favorite dish. The lobster and scallop drunken noodles and lobster mac & cheese were both flavorful, but not as memorable as I expected. My biggest disappointment was the midnight sticky ribs. They had good flavor but were noticeably overcooked and drier than I've ever had. I still think Poor Calvin's is worth trying because it's a unique part of Atlanta's food scene. I just left feeling that the food was comparable to several other great Asian fusion restaurants around the city rather than being in a league of its own. Just my two cents. This was absolutely a 10/10 experience. I was staying at the Marriott Downtown for a work trip and desperately needed to catch up with my friend and eat before heading to bed. I wasn't expecting much from this place but it was the perfect gem. I wasn't expecting much able to make a last minute reservation online and we were seated immediately. The waiter was professional and so friendly--he literally knew every little thing about each dish. He provided some great recommendations and we decided to order the lobster crawfish wontons, the crispy beef, the drunken noodle with scallops and lobster tail, and the sticky ribs. I easily could have eaten all the wontons myself and the drunken noodles came large lobster tails and plenty of scallops. I ate these so fast that I forgot to take a picture. The crispy beef was a little bit on the sweeter side but it was the perfect amount of crunch and sauce that paired well with the vegetables and jasmine rice. I also really enjoyed the ribs--they were very tender and flavorful. It came with collard greens which I didn't enjoy as much but the other dishes were so good and I ate so much that I didn't mind. I also saw plenty of couples celebrating milestones together so it definitely makes for a cute night out if you're in the area looking to have a nice dinner with your partner. I hope to be back to Atlanta soon so that I can indulge again.
Another year, another visit to Poor Calvin's. Once again went as part of a larger group. Tue front of house staff is very welcoming. The menu here is very nice. I think our host ordered one of everything on the starters menu. Everything I tried was great. They once again made me a smoked Old Fashioned. For my main course I had lobster, duck, bok choy, and mashed potatoes. It was delicious. Finished the evening with an espresso martini.
I enjoyed the atmosphere upon entering. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and recommended several dishes. We got the lobster wontons which were really good. For the main the lobster fried rice was amazing and even better the next day. The other main was fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and greens. The greens had a tangy flavor that was different but tasty. The drinks were also good. My only issue was the valet. The parking lot was too small and they kept moving my car to get other cars in. We watched them from the window continue to move my car which was in a parking space and bend the side mirrors back when they are automatic. One window was out the other was back. It was weird and the guys acted oblivious to the issue.
After long sessions at work, I was recommended to Calvin's by a close friend. When we arrived, we were seated immediately, even without a reservation. The vibe and ambiance of the place were fantastic, even though it is a small, closely-packed restaurant. Our waiter was extremely friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and took note of my allergies. I tried the Long Island; it was three drinks in one, with a spice that made it stand out. For dinner, I had chicken with lobster and greens. Mac was a little spicy, but mixing it with the greens worked well because they were sweet. I definitely will return to Calvin's; I can't call him poor because the prices are not low.
My husband and I were in Atlanta attending a conference and doing some research when we came across Poor Calvin's online. We intentionally avoided reading reviews because we wanted to form our own opinion, and we're so glad we did. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed warmly by the host, which immediately set the tone for a great dining experience. Once seated, our waiter was attentive, personable, knowledgeable, and genuinely seemed to care that we enjoyed our meal. The food was outstanding, the drinks were excellent. Poor Calvin's delivered from start to finish. If you're visiting Atlanta or you're a local looking for a restaurant that combines exceptional food with outstanding hospitality, Poor Calvin's is well worth the visit. We left with absolutely no complaints and look forward to returning the next time we're in Atlanta.
I was told that this was a wonderful place. You must use the valet service. The service here is spectacular. Waiter recommended the Lobster fried rice so that is what I got. The lobster was a little chewy and fried hard. The green side was crispy but cooler than room temperature. The food tasted food but not worth the hype. Next time, I will grab a drink and order something different.
Poor Calvins was okay. I wasn't wowed by my food but the experience was nice and the food was good for what it was. I opted for one of their specials which was a lamb meatloaf w/ gravy ontop and it came with a lobster tail and mashed potatoes for $55. The meatloaf seem to have more filler in it and I could barely taste the lamb. The sauce ontop was okay. The mashed potatoes were bland. The best thing was the lobster tail. I got the suspension cake which was highly raved about according to the reviews. It was good but not the best dessert I've ever had. It's a HUGE slice of cake so if you order it, share it with others or take it home. I split it between the 3 of us and we still couldn't finish it. Service was great and the host was kind enough to save me a table. They get BUSY the moment they open the door, so if you don't have reservations, get there 15 minutes prior to opening. It's hard to get in there. Would I'd come back? Eh. I can't say that I was that impressed or curious enough to try anything else. It is a bit pricey but not so unaffordable.. come check l it out for yourself.
The food...superb! Customer service...outstanding. Ambience...top-tier. Poor Calvin's will definitely be a staple every time I visit Atlanta. And Ariel? She deserves a raise ASAP...truly a breath of fresh air. Her energy, attentiveness, and warmth took the entire experience to the next level. Highly, highly recommend!
This space has great reviews, and it's because of the food and the amazing service, we got the duck and lobster which the duck was to die for, I would like the mashed purée to have a little bit more butter and seasoning, but overall the whole dish was excellent. We got the mussels that was very rich and delicious,, great flavors. The dessert, we ordered the Pound Cake topped with bananas foster made that dish explode from a 10 to 100.
I've been eyeing this place since I started traveling to ATL and I'm so happy I finally got to try this gem! The menu is so creative and fuses Asian and southern flavors so well and beautifully. We shared all the dishes and ordered the seafood spring rolls, lobster crawfish wontons, crab beignets, and the seafood curry. All of the dishes were so flavorful - the spring rolls were completely stuffed with all types of seafood and the sauce was a perfect pairing. The lobster crawfish wontons were creative and had huge chunks of crawfish inside... yum. The beignets were savory and paired so well with the pimento crab dip... so creative! The seafood curry was nothing like I've ever tasted - it was a mix of all types of curry flavors and included collard greens as part of the many vegetables and perfectly cooked seafood. It was an amazing dish and I highly recommend it. Ariel was the best waitstaff and she helped us pick all of our dishes and had wonderful recommendations and was super accommodating. I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a cute spot with delicious food and cocktails. I'll be back soon!

Had this review sitting in my drafts blank. lol But this place was amazing. Can't wait to go back. Definitely an upscale vibe. The food was like so damn good bro. Fellas bring your date here!! You gon come out them pockets but after coming here,I promise she coming out them drawers too. Ong. Although I will say it is kinda small in there.. so small the waiter spilled my drink on me as he passed by. LUCKILY we were at the end of the meal. This was on our to do list and it lived up to the billing. Our appetizers were fried deviled eggs which were excellent. Then we had beignets that had a seafood dip with Taro chips. They should just do this dip with the taro chips. My wife said this was the best meal she has had in forever lol. For our main entree we had the lobster fried rice which wax heavnly and fried chicken with lobster mac and cheese and greens. One of the best meals we have ever had. Our waiter Zubar gave us great suggestions on all the food. We got the lychee martinis which they are known for but let me tell you the sangria that I had was one of the two best ever! My wife danced thru all the meals and the drinks helped too. We will definitely be back for sure. read more

We had been trying to get to Poor Calvin's for a year because we like Asian Fusion foods and we finally went this past weekend. We had the opportunity to meet Calvin and he was kind and loved hearing parts of his story about the restaurant. Let me first say that Rueben, our bar server was very knowledgeable with cocktails and bourbon and very engaging. We enjoyed our drinks very much. The host was fun and engaging as well. The ambiance was lively and music was good but sometimes a little hard to hear but otherwise upbeat environment which was nice. As for the food, it was okay. We were pretty disappointed as what was explained to us was not what we were expecting to get. When sharing our experience with some of our friends, they said that Poor Calvin's is kind of known for this "dump food" on your plate. My honey was expecting a plate of fish and chips made with red snapper and unfortunately the fish presentation was nice but everything else on the plate was not good. The chunks of fish were super breaded and the pile of veggies, fries and looks like shredded fish just was not appetizing. I ordered the sea bass and I will say the portion of the sea bass was nice and I enjoyed the bokchoy but the mashed potatoes were cold. There was so much going on on each plate that the star of the dish just got lost. We totally felt like we wasted so much food and money. To compare, we went to another upscale steakhouse and fed five people and had cocktails and a bottle of wine and was just around $400. Our tab here was almost $300 for two and we did not have a bottle but just two cocktails each. What we also did not like is having our gratuity added to a 2-person tab sitting at the bar. I can understand a large party. We leave a hefty tip to our servers and when gratuity is added, it really takes away from the server's potential earnings. So look at your bill before you add that additional gratuity. Overall, drinks and fun atmosphere. Maybe even some of the appetizers. But I really would not recommend the food unless you like everything piled on your plate and super large portions. read more

I have been wanting to come to this place for years and finallyyyyy made it! And I was NOT disappointed! I went for my aunts bday and we had such a good time. Our waitress Ariel was so amazing! She described in detail every meal and drink we ordered! She was so nice and made sure we had a good time! I got the calamari, green tomatoes, and soft shell crab bao buns as apps, and EVERYTHING was amazing but those bao buns were everything! They are a special so not sure how long they will be available but they should definitely be added to the menu! I got the lobster fried rice for my entree and it was also amazing! Everyone I was with enjoyed their food except the fried chicken and collard greens. The fried chicken was under seasoned and the greens were weirdly seasoned! I'm used to southern style greens and these were definitely NOT that lol but besides those two things EVERYTHING was great! Even the drinks and desserts! If you haven't gone yet and are on the fence, hop off that fence and run in there!!!! read more

Hands down, THE best. Very cutesy venue. James was very accommodating, welcoming, and kind; first GM I've seen working the host stand, filling waters, and making conversation. Our waiter Andre was amazing, trust him with your life - every recommendation he made was 1000% the right one. Huge portions, great variety, and bursting with flavor! Andre recommended the pound cake and we were hesitant but you MUST TRY - Lord bless Mabel's hands for making it! Poor Calvin's was phenomenal. read more

One of the best restaurants in Atlanta. The service was very personal, polite and attentive. The chef came to my table to personally present my food when I ordered the special of the day (Lamb loin with shrimp, which had a flaming sauce presentation). I will be back the next time I travel to ATL. I called to let them know I would be 20 mins late, and they held my table for me with no problems. The host even thanked me on the way out and confirmed I had a good meal. I was dining alone this time, and certainly did not feel ignored or alone during my stay. The best lobster fried rice! There drinks are unique and flavorful, & lastly there calamari is a must try (very tender and not chewy) the best I've had yet! First of all, ain't nothing poor about Calvin lol. Easily one of the best restaurants in Atlanta. The establishment is very cute and had a very intimate atmosphere that I really enjoyed. The service also has to be the best in Atlanta, we were greeted with open arms immediately upon arrival. Everyone and everything in the establishment seemed to move seamlessly. There was so much love and care put into not just the food but the drinks. The food was so unique, flavorful, and fresh. We enjoyed our food so much that we got more food to go for later. We're already planning our next trip back. My husband had the Chilean Sea Bass and it was so good he ate it before I could even get a picture of it. We also had the salmon bites and the empanadas for dessert! Unfortunately also not pictured because they were just too good. read more

Came in for Easter brunch and things started off a bit rocky: first, we ordered beignets and our waiter told us we would not be able to have them with maple syrup, because they were all out. My husband asked about the chicken and waffle and our waiter again confirmed there was no maple syrup to serve with this dish either. Next, my husband ordered a Hennessy margarita. The waiter said the restaurant no longer serves Hennessy. So, he ordered a dirty martini with stuffed olives and the waiter offered pimento-stuffed olives, only to return moments later saying they didn't have anymore. Luckily, the items that they did have available, were absolutely delicious! Also, their ability to keep a crispy outside (fries and waffle) yet soft inside, underneath toppings was truly remarkable. read more
November 2023 My first dinner in Atlanta recommended by my Uber driver. We got lucky and our group of 5 didn't have a reservation but there was no wait. I returned to Poor Calvin's after many years hoping for a better experience. The food is mediocre and overpriced and the service even worse. We ordered the crab beignets and it was not good. Then we also ordered the tom yum soup because we are big tom um soup fans. Similarly bad. Couldn't eat it. They had a special that sounded great and they rang us in for it but then 20 minutes later told us they were out of it. So we ordered the sea bass hoping it was good and the actual fish was tasty but they gave me an extra small piece and swore it was 7/8 ounces. The orzo that comes with it is not tasty at all. We told our server about all of this then she called the chef out to basically come out and defend everything and didn't accommodate ANYTHING. So we had a few drinks too and had a bill over 300 for two ppl and they were just like oh well. Bad service and probably hurting financially if they have to treat customers like that after such a poor experience. If it was me I'd at least comp a drink the experience was horrible. This was so disappointing. Oh also auto 20 percent tip. I would have tipped more and would not have expected that from a place like that. read more

I don't think I have ever been disappointed when I stop by Poor Calvin's. But finally the ox tail we have been waiting for is finally back on the day we stop by for my birthday dinner. The ox-tail was the high light of the night. My favorite curry flavor out of all the dishes here. It was fall of the bone good. The curry is so good with everything rice or the leftover bread from the mussel dish. We also had the staple duck dynasty which never disappoints. The mussel is a new dish and we loved it. I can dip in that sauce all day if they bring me more bread. Pad see ew was good but the pad thai is much better. The seafood curry is also a very good staple choice as you cannot go wrong with it. I have to setup a notification with the staff to get a notification sent to my phone whenever they make the oxtail special so I can come back for more. read more
I've been to Poor Calvin's a total of 4 times and everytime I go, I think I should go more often. To me, the restaurant represents what is unique about the Atlanta food scene which is fusion concepts. My wife and I were taking out a friend this time to celebrate. It's a higher end dining experience but well worth the money. As a small warning because it is popular, it can get crowded and as a result the ambiance can be a bit loud to those expecting a quieter dining experience. Onto the food. We got three appetitzers - the fried frog leg, the deviled egg with crab, and the lobster crawfish wanton. They were all fantastic and I highly recommend them. If I were to rank them, I'd say I'd pick the fried frog leg, the devil egg with crab and then the lobster crawfish wanton but that's because I was in a savory mood. I ended up getting the Duck Dynasty. The scallops were ridiculously good and the duck was tender eith the skin nicely crisp. My wife got the off menu special which was a trout stuffed with crab. This place was one of the highlights of my Atlanta trip. Everything was a 10/10 from the service, food, and ambience of the restaurant. It looks small from the outside but it is so cute and nice inside and was busy so definitely make reservations. The menu, portions, and quality of the food was fantastic. For appetizers we got the lobster and crawfish wontons and lychee martinis. Both were so good. The wontons were a GREAT appetizer and so yummy. For dinner we got the grilled australian lamb chops and lobster fried rice. Both these dishes had a beautiful presentation and were so flavorful we literally ate every single bite with no leftovers. My friend is a picky eater and doesn't even eat lamb chops usually and LOVED both plates. Everything was cooked to perfection. Dessert was sooo hard to choose from. Our server came to our corner of the restaurant and described each dessert dish to everyone so well that we were discussing what to get with other tables. We went with the toasted pound cake and was literally obsessed. I'm not even a banana fan and it was still amazing to me. The other tables around us who got every other dessert said everything else amazing too so clearly you can't go wrong. This whole dining experience was great. read more
Came here for my birthday dinner. Joy was amazing and very attentive. You need to have your entire party there before being seated. It is a quite small place so do not go without making a reservation. The food is expensive but so so worth it. Parking can be limited but there is a parking attendant to help direct you. read more

Ohhhh weeee!!! When you're out of town, sometimes you get lucky and find a good place to eat. Sometimes you find a GEM !! Poor Calvin's is a diamond! The place is small compared to the ambiance and flavor of the place. The decor is fitting, once you walk past the black curtain you are transported to a place your senses are blessed. The food was enchanting! The lamb and chorizo empanadas were the special for the day. GREAT!!! Also had the lobster and crawfish wonton, which were green!!! Uhmmmmm uhmmm uhmmm! Crab beignets... you don't know you need these in your life until you've had them!!! Crispy Beef and Lobsters fried rice were the the entrees and were both award winning taste! If in the area for this place, please go!!! Make a reservation though. (you can do walk in also, but to enjoy your stay and not feel rushed. It's best to make a reservation.) read more

Poor Calvin's is a Midtown institution, serving excellent Asian fusion cuisine. Location and Parking Located on Piedmont Rd, parking is free along the street in front of the restaurant. Venue and Atmosphere The interior is decorated with luxurious velvet furniture, mood lighting, and gold statues. There are fresh flowers on every table and plenty of windows for natural light. Service Service was prompt, courteous, and efficient. Our server game us plenty of suggestions and tasting notes as well. Food and Beverages Everything, from the cocktails to the entrees, was perfectly seasoned and presented beautifully. The Rum punch has several types of liquor but is well balanced with sweetness. The Bok-choy was tender and sautéed well. The seafood curry was absolutely delicious, as was the fried chicken. The hint of coconut milk in the collard greens was unexpected, but tasty. Also, the lobster Mac and cheese gets 5-stars alone. Verdict This is my third time dining here, and I'll definitely return! read more

I always have a fantastic time when I dine here, so it's always a treat when I get to go! I had reservations on NYE and was promptly greeted and sat. The location isn't large and is dimly lit so that makes it feel like a more intimate setting. Great for a date night or dinner w: a small group -- though the food is great, it wouldn't be my top pick for a large group. Throughout our dining experience, our waitress Ashley was personable and made great recommendations. They make sure to accommodate any allergies or dietary restrictions your party may have as well as run down any specials on their appetizers or entrees. (Pro tip: someone should always order the special, they hardly repeat so they're prettyyyy exclusive!) Last time, I got the crispy beef which is absolutely tasty and like a yummy stir fry. I've also tried their lobster Mac & cheese which is equally delish and not absent of the lobster they promise. This time I got the pad Thai which I really liked. It was vegetable heavy, the lobster and shrimp were both very fresh, and it was just an overall party in my mouth! Also, the portions are always large enough for at least 2 meals :-) The price range is pretty moderate, but for the quality and experience it is very much worth it. I hope to come back in the future for their brunch and seafood curry my friend raves about. read more

There are some very limited vegan options, but I do not recommend it at all for vegan or vegetarians, as the owners will make no exceptions or adjustments to their menu to cater to vegan customers.
Any chance on getting a seat without a reservation?
Depends on the night. If you are trying on a weekend of holiday weekend I highly doubt it. The bar Possibly but expect 1-2+ hour wait

They provide complimentary valet parking during dinner.
