Another one of Houston's classic burger shacks, Poppa Burger is open 24/7, and is dirt cheap. It's one of those joints that I don't get to nearly often enough - slightly off the beaten path, and definitely not in the best neighborhood. But sometimes, at 3 AM, you want some grease. You're not sure, exactly, what kind of grease, but you know you want it so you go to Poppa Burgers, where you can get burgers, tacos, shakes, fries, onion rings, and more. Order at the window, and then wait. After you get your food, sit at the picnic tables under the eaves, or take your food home. Generally, when I go, I need to eat at the picnic tables because I need to sober up. Trivia: the Houston indie band Junior Varsity (not The Junior Varsity) wrote a song titled Poppa Burger. I ordered two Big Poppa cheeseburgers, one order of french fries, and one order of onion rings. I was so hungry, the food was just good. It is a great place to grab a bite to eat. The service is great. Make sure to have CASH to pay for your bill, no credit cards and no debit cards are accepted. My total bill was around $10.00 bucks. Can't beat that for a good and quick meal. For the price and speed, I'd pick this for a quick bite over fast food joints with their very thin and small patty. Poppa's burgers are always freshly made! People who gave bad reviews most likely came here with an expectation of this having an indoor seating area with a/c but do understand that this burger place has been here for generations at least for 50 years! My lack of the last fifth star is probably my own unrealistic hope that its beef patty had more "beef" in it but I guess you get what you pay for! With just a little shack surrounded by covered parking and picnic tables, Poppa Burger looks like it could be a former drive-in or mechanics shop. Walk up to place your order and take a seat while they prepare it. I got the cheeseburger and added jalapeños today, which was delicious on a toasted bun with lettuce, tomato, and pickle. I obviously prefer the unique burger stands, but McDonald's fries can be like crack sometimes. At long last, however, I have found a place to satisfy those cravings apart from the ubiquitous corporate chain. And even better, Poppa's never closes. Just north of I10 on North Main the Poppa Burger stand has been a Houston institution for something on 45 years. Having passed it inumerable times and always thinking I should pull over, I finally did at 10:30pm on a Saturday. The sign out front boasts that they are open 24/7 "even holidays". Its a walk-up to order shack, no indoor seating just a few park benches, and you've got to order thru a metal grill I'm guessing is to protect the employees from their customers. There are the usual variety of burgers (with bacon, with cheese, with jalapenos) and a few other items such as tacos and available. Drinks include mexican soft drinks and shakes. I ordered the basic bacon cheeseburger, fries, and a small vanilla shake. The fries are the most McDonalds-like I've had maybe a little saltier. If you're a fan of the McD fries you'll like these. The burger however was 100 times better than anything McD can offer, with that dense smoky patty taste I've noticed at a couple other burger stands in the hispanic part of town. The shake didn't hold up as well, Someburger does that better, but was at least fairly cheap. Overall great stuff. read more

This place has been there for years and I give them props for that. It's amazing that they are still open especially with all the changes and developments that have happened over the past few years. The food is pretty cheap which I think is partly the reason it's done well. The burgers I've had were decent but it's not the best that I've had in comparison to other similar establishments. One of the worst burgers I've had in a long time. Sub-par meat which I'm sure is how they keep the prices low. The flavor was so bad I couldn't even taste the bacon (may have been due to the pungent pickles). The onion rings were under cooked but the fries were good. This place is alright, first time I went I thought the food was horrible and some weird homeless lady tried to get me to buy her tacos and made the whole visit awkward. I've been back a few times because I'm a night owl and it's convenient. The burgers remind me of school cafeteria food, they are edible though, the fries are pretty good, but recently I tried the breakfast tacos and they were actually pretty darn good. The menu is pretty interesting, not sure if in a good or bad way. They get 4 stars because the convenience of being 24 hours, being very reasonably priced and they are in a location that I find interesting. A lot of the reviews are misleading I feel, the food is mediocre at best, it may taste better drunk when there aren't many cheap options but I would probably never go here in the day time. Surely the place was bound to have large, real beef, slightly greasy burgers, at a resonable price. Nope. Not true. The prices are cheap. The burger tasted decent thanks to the grilled buns. The patty itself is a sad situation- thin and suspicious, similar to that used in cafeteria food. The burger was small, I could have seriously eaten two. This has to be a local neighborhood Gem of a historical near North Side. It is located near downtown University of Houston and is open 24/7. This place is unique because it has concession type food all day everyday Burger baskets are cheap ready to go within minutes and the fries aren't that bad. When I was a kid there was a lady that used to ask you if you wanted to catch up and if you said yes you look at you open the fridge and then squirt ketchup in their rapid twisted and then give it to you. It was so funny and now it is a quick bite to eat before you go home after a late night or a little snack that you're looking for the atmosphere isn't all that great but it is a good place to sit down enjoy a hot meal and a hot summer of Houston weather. Unfortunately the Metro Rail has taking a lot of the scenery from it and I hope that maybe someday they are being mural project on the tollway I mean metro rail. Poppa Burger has been around since I was around four years old and living on the corner of Hogan and Fletcher. I'm now 58 years old and live out by beltway 8 and 59 towards Humble. My husband and I still stop by on our way home after a night out on Saturdays. The burgers and fries with ketchup are the best and fairly cheap. When i was little my parents would go by there and I always had to go to the window and order a little burger for my mother. They were 15 cents at the time. read more
