The counter has just two high chairs, both occupied, so after being handed our bag, she set it on the cashier counter to spread the cream cheese -- a 30-second task, and we were already on our way out. A man in the back kitchen raised his voice from a distance and told her to move, without approaching or explaining why. There was nowhere else to go: the only alternative was a barrel outside that he pointed to my wife, but it was in 90°F heat and already occupied by a homeless man using it as his own space. No one else was waiting to use the counter -- it wasn't as if we were in anyone's way. This is a far cry from the friendly, neighborhood feel we've come to expect from the 3rd Ave & 83rd St location, where we're regulars. I've seen rumblings of PopUp Bagels on social media for a while now - and almost immediately my ears perked up. As a native New Yorker, I have strong opinions on bagels, so when I saw this was making the rounds I questioned how good they really were. I noticed there was a location close to my office, so I decided to step out during lunch to check it out for myself. Right off the jump, I could tell that PopUp was not like a traditional bagelry. You will not find any sandwiches here, nor will they even spread schmear on your bagel for you. Instead, you purchase whole bagels and small tubs of cream cheese or butter so you can "rip and dip" the bagel into the schmear. I assume this is done to optimize foot traffic and workflow, while marketing the rip and dip as the trendy way to eat a bagel. My gluttonous self, however, has been ripping and dipping since I was a child - so who's a trendsetter now? The space itself is a decent size - it has modern aesthetics with music playing and the bagels front and center. There is a three bagel minimum purchase, which comes with one tub of schmear; anything extra is an additional charge. This is good if you have a few people with you, but there's no way to get just one bagel with some schmear. The bagel flavors consisted of plain, salt, sesame, everything, and poppy. I decided to bring some back to the office, so I got one of each except the poppy. For the schmear, they had regular and scallion cream cheese, salted butter, plus some rotating specials of each. One tub was included with my order so I went with plain, and decided to pay extra for a tub of scallion. So finally, how were the bagels? Honestly, not bad - I can understand why people flock here. They were served warm, had a good chew, and great balance of flavors. I could argue that it was almost a little *too* chewy - to the point where it would be hard to slice and spread, but I guess that's why these are marketed as a rip and dip. Regardless, I've had way worse bagels. The cream cheeses were great - I would come back just to pick up those. Service was fast and friendly, and overall I was impressed with PopUp Bagels. This is not the end all be all of bagel spots, and I don't think this place is for everyone - but, they are a formidable competitor in the bagel stratosphere. I finally got to try PopUp bagel on my last trip to NYC and I loved the light dough bagels that came hot of the oven! You have to get the salt bagel which after trying all their varieties are the best! The flaky sea salt topping adds a ton of flavor without being too salty and between the soft doughy interior and nice crisp crust, the bagels may have been the highlight of my trip. I love the whipped scallion smear as well and it's fun (but messy) to rip and dip the bagels. Don't be intimidated that you have to buy a pack of 3 bagels to start, I ate 2 by myself in one sitting and went back the next morning for more. They also have special flavors of butter and schmear depending on when you go and I tried my friend's herb butter that she had saved from a previous visit and it was delicious as well. The texture alone sets them apart, crisp on the outside with that dense, chewy interior that actually has substance. I tried the plain, salted, everything, and poppy seed. Yes, all of them. Pretty solid bagels but the true star are their schmears!! Ditch the boring ole cream cheese-- and opt for a schemer instead! Their spreads are so creative and so delicious. During my visit during the summer, I tried out their extra hot honey peach schmear and hot honey butter. Both really nailed the balance between sweet and spicy- which are flavors I normally wouldn't gravitate towards but I am so glad I did because they were so yummy. I also like how their concept is to eat smaller bagels so you try different bites with their schmears. As someone who is indecisive and likes to try different flavors at a time, I like how they encourage people to try a couple of schmears at a time with their bagels instead of having to commit to a single spread when eating a bagel. A brilliant idea! Sadly, I'll have to deduct one star for the extremely loud music and customer service. It was actually deafeningly loud in this store-- I was right in front of the cashier and we still couldn't hear each other. I also found the staff to be a bit on the rude side. The shmear was superb, and I highly recommend the scallion option, but I am definitely a scallion lover. The setup is unique and strictly to go. They do not assemble your bagel for you, instead everything is given separately so you can build your own lox bagel or simply "rip and dip" as they say. Their lox selection was excellent, and I would absolutely order it again. I would just prefer to take it home to assemble, because doing it in public was not very easy. 10/10 PopUp Bagels has the best bagels that I've ever had in my entire life. As someone who doesn't typically like bagels, eating an everything bagel from POpUP was a life-changing experience. The bread is perfectly warm, chewy, and bouncy--and unlike other bagels, it doesn't have that rubbery consistency. You can choose 3 or 5 bagel varieties that include options like poppy seed, sesame, and salt but the everything bagel is the most perfectly seasoned ball of delight and the one that stood out to us the most. We paired it with the spinach and artichoke cream cheese, a thick and luscious whipped spread that left us grinning from ear to ear. I purchased 6 sesame bagels w/hotel butter and was disappointed my bagels were all dry and burnt. I paid over $22 and dragged them home from Midtown back to Queens. I ended up having to throw away the bagels since it was too hard and will get even harder once you freeze and reheat. At least the butter was good. Management should throw away bagels they burnt or at least ask the customer if they mind burnt bagels. Mom has bad teeth and I was very disappointed I went out of my way to get them. Then they place whole uncut bagels in a bag with a tub of cream cheese. Little to no effort in terms of preparing a traditionally toasted bagel and schmear. The bagels themselves were divine! I had to try popup bagels given all the good things I've heard about it and honestly was slightly disappointed. I thought it was interesting they were out of their scallion cream cheese but they didn't announce it or make it known. I only found out when I got to the front and I also observed that many others after me tried to order scallion cream cheese as well but was told there was none once they got to the front. Given that there's only 3 smear options, plain or scallion or the specialty smear - I wished they announced it earlier rather than having us wait in the long line to find out at the front. The bagels were good but they weren't anything too special. I feel like I've had better bagels elsewhere for cheaper. The bagels here appear smaller than your average bagel elsewhere. I ordered the everything and salt bagels and I found that the everything bagels I got were inconsistent where one was super salty and the other one was fine. Despite this, I did appreciate that the bagels I got were warm. And I do think their rotating specialty smears and butters are quite innovative and fun. The staff were also nice as well and although they ran out of everything bagels at the time, it didn't take them too long to get my order out.
