This used to be one of my favorite restaurants. The last three times I went the steak wasn't nearly as good as it used to be. The first time it happened I thought maybe they had an off day. The meat come out cooked well done instead of medium and there was hardly any flavor. It was as if they cooked the steak plain and then threw the molho (sauce) on. I haven't visited at all this year because having back to back not so great experiences has been enough to keep me away. After talking to some friends they also agreed that Portas isn't as good as it used to be. Supposedly the restaurant changed ownership a couple of years ago. The atmosphere is nice, and some things on the menu are still good (like the round cut fries), which is why I'll leave two stars up. read more

A taste of Portugal I don't know anything about Portuguese food and have no idea what they really eat in Portugal. But if the food is anything like what they serve in Portas Da Cidade then the people in Portugal eat well indeed. The restaurant is in a rather odd looking building that is surprising small inside. The waiting area looks larger than the dining room. There is a nice patio outside but since there was three feet of snow covering it my wife insisted that we eat inside. The interior is cozy with a little stove and a couple of TVs showing Portuguese programs. A crowded bar is one side and some tables and chairs placed where ever there is room. Not spacious but enough room not to bump elbows with the people next to you. But of course the real attraction of a restaurant is the food. The menu is in Portuguese but with English explanations of the meals. I had some kind of shrimp and linguini dish that was absolutely superb. My very hungry wife had the potatoes, pork and veggies that she absolutely devoured and said was on of the best meals she had in a while. I have no idea if this was authentic Portuguese food and don't care one bit. The food and service was excellent and we left feeling full and happy. 4.254 Stars Imagine you had a friend who had never been to a nice Italian restaurant. Where would take them? I know that scenario is highly unlikely, but for Portuguese Cuisine it's not a stretch. If I wanted to make a good first impression on a friend new to Portuguese Cuisine, I'd bring the them here. The locals told me that people actually drive from New Bedford to come here. There are many fine Portuguese places in New Bedford and this cute little spot is at that level. The food is uncompromisingly authentic with a home cooked plus a notch or two. Seafood, Steaks, Kebobs, Chourico, Kale Soup, Portuguese Soup, the Flat Fried potatoes they have it all. The room is small and rectangular with room for large parties and intimate seating for two. I didn't venture into the bar. The crowd was largely composed of families with 3 generations per table. They give black olives and bread when you sit down. For Appetizers we had a Grilled Chourico Sausage (CHOURIÇO Á BOMBEIRO), Little neck Clams in in wine and garlic (AMEIJOAS Á "BULHAO PATO") and Fried Chicken Wings, Caldo Verde Soup and Portuguese Soup. The Chourico is not Gaspars, or Michael's it's hand made quality with larger chunks of meat and rich spices. Our entrees: BACALHAU ASSADO NA BRASA - Grilled dried codfish in extra virgin oil and garlic. (very traditional) PAELHA Á VALENCIANA -Lobster, shrimp, littlenecks, squid, crab meat, fish, chouriço and pork blended with saffron rice in a mild red sauce. (paella w/ Lobster!) 7/31/2011 Just went a second time and changed the rating from a 4 to a 5. Everything was wonderful except the bread. However, since the portions are very large, there is no need to eat any bread. The service was also outstanding. I didn't know anything about Portuguese wines so I asked the water to recommend one based on parameters I gave him. His choice was perfect. The (red) wine came out warm, so the water got us an ice bucket to correct the problem. I had a T-Bone veal steak seasoned and cooked exactly right. Another in our party got skewered beef. Again cooked exactly right. There were six pieces of beef, my guess is that there was over a pound of meat. Half of it will be taken home for lunch the next day. Someone ordered something with Lobster. It should have been labeled Lobster with something. We could not believe that amount of lobster in the dish. This restaurant is off the beaten path, but well worth the drive. For some reason, my GPS thought it was on the other side of the road which is a bowling alley. I'd go 4 1/2 stars. Been here a few times and have always had a great meal at a reasonable price. The espresso martinis are delicious and served with a side car. The waiter was informative of menu choices and was patient with our many questions. 4 of us ordered different dishes, all to our satisfaction with taste and portion of food - plenty to take home for leftovers. Very friendly, if a bit slow, service and incredibly low prices make it an easy place to like. The Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato offered a generous serving of a dozen or so littenecks, in a white wine, garlic, and olive oil sauce so tasty we were seaching for pieces of bread to sop it all up. Did I mention, that as an appetizer serving, this dish is a shade under $10 bucks? The flame grilled Chouriço à Bombeiro was a firery, spicy bite. The sharpest flavored chouriço I have ever had in fact. Served beside pickled Cauliflower, Peppers, and Celery, they fit the strongly spiced sausage quite well. Made a reservation (recommended) and got seated right away. Our server was so sweet, an older Portuguese man, his name was bosco, super friendly and knowledgable. Got the littlenecks and chourico appetizer, along with fried calamari (so good, comes with banana peppers and olives and no creepy squid ones!) also the Portuguese pops that come on the table are delicious! We have since been several times and can't wait to go back. I now have also taken my good friend there for her birthday, had my whole family go there for my nephew's birthday, and went with work people around the holidays! Stopped in for dinner with a couple of coworkers. A bit early for dinner so plenty of tables which filled quickly by the time we received our orders. Had the bife a portuguesa which was cooked to a perfect medium temp as requested. Just the right spice in the sauce and very tender meat. The "chips" served surrounding the dish were a bit soggy by the time the dish arrived but ended up being very good being soaked in the gravy. I visited last Friday and my guest and I ordered their fish and chips. I asked if it was prepared in a thick batter and was told, "No, not at all." The staff brought our order and it appeared to be 2 large portions of fish. Unfortunately, once we cut into the portions we found very little fish. The batter was thicker than I had hoped for and the batter lacked any fish towards the ends. The fries, both round and regular styles, were greasy. The lunch plates were 11.99 and seriously lacked any quality fish. Not their best dish. I have had other dinners here and have been satisfied. In addition, we made frequent visits that evening to the bathroom after consuming the fish and chips. I guess the batter just didn't agree with us. read more

Had the worst meal ever there. I ordered the scrod with bread crumb and seafood sauce with fries. Got overcooked fish, no bread crumb or sauce or fries. Got overcooked rice and two large boiled potatoes. They finally brought fries which were cold. I didn't eat my meal nor did I take it home and the waitress was not helpful in making it right. First reason is we ordered the fried chicken as an appetizer and it was the pre-battered frozen chicken that you buy in the frozen section at the grocery store. Second reason is the shrimp in garlic, wine, and spices I ordered for my entree was way passed over cooked, but the sauce was amazingly delicious. Too bad the shrimp wasn't cooked to perfection. My family of three arrived there w/o a reservation about 5:30 July 2, 2020 and ate on the restaurant's outdoor patio. By 6:30 there was only one unoccupied table. Seating indoors was still not available due to COVID-19. The indoor restrooms were available. I thought tables were safely spaced apart. The waitstaff wore masks, we did not after being seated since we were eating/drinking. We felt very safe there even though it was our first time dining out since the virus shutdown in March. Two of us had Octopus Lagareiro. The red potatoes served with the dish were somewhat plain but went well with the tender and flavorfull octopus. We would order this dish again. One of us had the linguini with shrimp and scallops in a garlic and wine sauce which had a pronounced yet good lemon flavor. Portions were good and ate most of the leftovers the following evening at home. I enjoyed my two glasses of white Portuguese wine which were reasonably priced at $5 each. I'm Portuguese and have eaten Portuguese food all my life and all over the world. With that being said, this place is amazing. Everything was so good it was unbelievable and hard to stop eating. The service was great! Definitely five star. There's really not much more I can say except that you need to try this place for yourself. It was unbelievable for me during my experience there. If there is one thing I would say that isn't positive it would be that they need to buy new chairs. They're comfy but look a little tacky. But does that really matter when the food is this good. I went here on the recommendation of a friend wanting to try Portuguese cuisine. I was told this was the best Portuguese restaurant around. I was ecstatic about what I found! The restaurant was very busy. When we arrived we were informed there would be a 45 to 60 minute wait. Almost right away the owner came up to us and told us he would "take care of" us. He was able to find us a table in 20 minutes in the bar area. This is how he treats ll of his guests. He appears to be one of those owners where everybody knows his name. After seating we ordered the calamari for an appetizer. We were told everything was made to order and would take up to 45 minutes therefore, if we were hungry we should order an app. The calamari was perfectly cooked and delicious. It was littered with multiple types of peppers and green olives. We could not get enough! For an entree I ordered the Portuguese version of Pallea. I did not expect this to be as filled with seafood as it was. On top of the dish literally sat a whole lobster. Accompanied with that were numerous scallops, muscles, shrimp, and pieces of fish, pork, and chorico. This all sat on a bed of well seasoned rice with a little spice all for under 20$. My fiancee ordered one of the specials, baked octopus! This whole octopus was presented on a bed of baked potatoes and drizzled with olive oil and earthy spices. Again, this was cooked perfectly. It was tender and juicy. The potatoes were even flavorful. This restaurant has wonderful food at a great price. Expect to wait when you go here. It's hard for me to order anything other than those three items because they're all so good and when I find good food it's hard for me to stray. The paella is probably my favorite. Wow! What a great meal! The 4 of us ate well for just over $100. I had the filet mignon with shrimp, he had the carne espito and the girls had chicken. We shared a bottle of Portuguese Monte Velho and we had desserts. The service is beyond compare. They could not do enough to serve us. This is an amazing restaurant. The food is top notch. New to a true Portuguese restaurant. Asked for a recommendation from an obviously regular and obviously Portuguese patron. I elected to have the pork cutlets rather than the octopus recommend. Bad choice. At the waiters suggestion I choose the mushroom sauce. This was the only redeeming point of my meal. The pork cutlets were dry, and tasteless similar to sawdust. Had it not been for the mushroom sauce there would have not been any flavor. Our sever never inquired as to our satisfaction, and when I tried to express my dissatisfaction I was hushed by my dinner guest. I will put it off to possibly un-sophistication on my partners part, but I won't be back in this town ever again, but I really would like to give Portuguese food another try in another less expensive place. read more

We had a delicious meal of paella, and chicken with little necks. Nice atmosphere and soft lighting. We loved the complementary dish of olives. The Borga Reserve wine was excellent - tannic and complex and full of dark sediment. You could taste the little Portuguese island of St. Michaels in it. One complaint - we arrived 45 minutes before closing. We got the impression that the paella wasn't cooked as long as it normally would have been. Probably because people wanted to go home; I get it. Basically, rice was a bit crunchy in some areas. Yes, I know paella rice should still have a "bite," and this wasn't that. But the seafood in it was good - 1/2 a lobster and some shrimp. And the pork was well seasoned and tender. Scallops were tiny and not impressive - doubt they were local. The Portuguese kale soup with potato broth is not the typical kale soup. It's a white broth that tastes of instant mashed potatoes with shredded kale. Nice taste. No other veggies visible. The kid liked it. Had the apple tart for dessert - good but not memorable. I went here for lunch with my cousins, food was great and it totally brought me back to visiting san miguel when i was a child. Not just the food but also the paintings on the wall. I enjoyed it very much. Lunch was $10 i believe for a JR steak that was huge and plenty of round potoatoes.
