The famous Chicago chain known for Italian beef sandwiches and Chicago hot dogs has finally opened some Houston-area locations! It's about time--thank you!!! For years now, after having eaten at locations in Chicago, we've been ordering the frozen sandwich kits to make their food at home. Now we can enjoy their excellent specialities made fresh in town. The Italian beef sandwiches and the Chicago style hot dogs, with fresh crinkle fries and fantastic breaded onion rings are something we've gone for just about every week since they opened in Richmond (a 40 minute trip each way), and now Katy (much closer). Both locations look nearly identical and are very consistent with their high cuisine quality. Just to see, I've ordered a bacon cheeseburger a couple of times to see how it was, and it's a solid option too. Just to be clear, the Italian beef sandwiches and hot dogs are the stars of the menu. Their chocolate cake with chocolate icing is pretty awesome too. Staff is quite friendly, service is quick, and music is good (retro). [Tip: unless you like eating a sandwich with a spoon, order the Italian beef as dry as possible with the "juice" on the side if you are not going to eat it immediately. It gets soggy very fast. This is not really needed if you dine there, but for take-out I'd say it's mandatory.] read more

For those of you from Chicago that are used to a certain kind of portillos experience prepare to be deeply disappointed when you visit the new Katy location. The first thing you notice is the filth everywhere, the floors are sticky, the bathroom is trashed out, and the restaurant trash cans are overflowing onto the floor. 80% of the available tables were filthy and has not been cleaned. The most notable piece of frustration was that we stood there for 8 minutes waiting for somebody to take our order with nobody in line in front of us. The staff was staring at us like we were crazy. For the past 20 years, my favorite part of traveling to Chicago was immediately stopping at the location closest to Midway Airport and eating as soon as I got off my flight. I LOVE Portillo's, and when I introduced my daughter to it, she fell in love as well. Well, I guess technically I love the locations up north because for some reason the Houston locations don't have the croissant sandwich that makes my mouth water, or the seasonal shakes that I always look forward to. Their regular sandwiches are ok, but nothing to write home about. Ditto their hot dogs...meh. The beef and cheddar croissant is the stuff that dreams are made of and wars are fought over, but according to the Katy location's manager, we wont be getting the full menu. "Since nobody knows what they're missing, we are going to keep the menu as bare as possible" was the gist of what I was told. If you ever decide to offer us Texans the same menu that the fine folks up north get, I'll be a 3x/week customer. Until then, I'll keep looking forward to my Chicago trips. read more

Delicious, exactly as I remember from my childhood, the taste of a great italian beef

Been hearing about how good this place is for a while. Went tonight through the drive thru- service was awesome from the guy who took my order to the one who handed me the food. Got home and my food was hot still. I got the Italian beef with generous peppers and a side of sauce to dip. I also got fries and a side of cheese sauce and a piece of chocolate cake. I got a cheeseburger just in case I didn't like the Italian beef sandwich. Well the cheeseburger will be lunch tomorrow because everything else was so delicious!! It did not disappoint!! And the portions were generous. Will definitely come back and try some of the other items they have. read more

For a busy Sunday night, the food and service were pretty good. We ordered 2 of the #1s, a chili dog, and a kids dog. Food came out in about 10 minutes. We were missing a lot of the side condiments and ended up having to go back up to wait and get someone's attention. The only let down was that the chili dog was a bit cold. Restaurant is very clean and aesthetic. We had the spicy chicken sandwich, beef sandwich, and fries. All were excellent! Only feedback is that the food could have been ready quicker, took about 8 minutes total. Not sure if that's because it was made to order or simply new restaurant starting out. I have been to this restaurant plenty of times and last night me and my husband decided we would take the kids and go eat dinner well we get their we order us some beef sandwiches and we asked for hot peppers on one of them the other one was a combo and then we had a regular beef sandwich nothing on it so we received the order and when i took the sandwiches back up their to get remade a young lady in a black shirt had the worse attitude i have ever seen she snatched the sandwich from me walked off came back and said we are remaking it i will call you when it is ready my husbands mouth dropped wr left immediately after and this is not the first time we have came into the portillos in katy and have been treated this way so we have decided we will never come back to katy they need to do some work with their staff unacceptable read more

Food was very bland and did not taste good, but the inside was run well and food didn't take long to come out.

We drove to Houston to eat here. We ordered through the stores online site and waited 30 minutes for it to be done like the website said. My husband called to see if we could drive through instead of coming in and they said of course. The website let us know when food was ready so we went to the window. I noticed employees were looking confused and I figured they didn't fix the order because that has happened several times at other places when we've used their website. One thing was the drive through was not a window, it was a whole door. That was pretty neat. Anyway an employee came and said he knows our order was prepared and that someone had picked our order up before we got there but they were already starting the order over again. We were not in a hurry so it wasn't bothersome that we had to wait for it to be made again. While we waited the manager came out and apologized, then she gave us free cake. We ordered the beef and the Big beef. They were out of peppers and onions so that was disappointing and then we had to pay for cheese. We drove back to our room to eat and everything was OK. I like more stuff on my sandwiches but my husband liked it. I'd come here again. The food was OK and the customer service was better than most places. read more

As a native of Chicago I am glad to be able to get authentic Chicago dogs here in Texas. The food is pretty close to every other Portillos ive been to (Chicago, Cali and Arizona) but the service still needs some tweaking even though the Katy location has been around for 5 months now. Went thru the drivethrough and ordered 2 Chicago dogs, 2 fries, chopped salad and 2 pieces of chocolate cake. Going to save my Italian beef/sausage combo order for my next visit :) But I did not get the usual wedge of Italian bread and butter with my chopped salad in the takeout bag, nor was i offered or given ketchup for the fries (I swear I was not going to put ketchup on a Vienna). And for some reason the dog itself didn't taste as good (was a little bland) as they usually do although it had decent snap. Thank goodness all the authentic bun and toppings were there. So please tighten up those procedures in the drive through pickup lane! read more

I used to live in Geneva, Illinois. And I used to eat over. They're once a week. It was the best I've ever had. This one here is the worst day ever had. It was dry. They forgot half my order. Once we found out about it opening we've eaten there twice. We had the Chicago dog and fried chicken sandwich the first time then the Italian beef sandwich and loved both meals. And the chocolate shakes are fantastic!!! We're already planning on trying the burgers on our next visit. read more

Went on New Years Day, quick service and the hot dogs are just as good as they are in Chicago. Inside decor is more reminiscent and relevant to TX with old vintage oil-related signs. Definitely recommend them for the hot dogs. read more

Portillo's Katy was as good as Chicago was! I went two days after opening which typically means not all issues have been worked out but to my surprise everything was excellent. The Chicago dog was well made and the Italian beef was well dipped. The fries were crisp and hot. All of the staff seemed to be well trained which improved the experience. I would highly recommend getting an Italian beef well dipped or anything else on their menu. read more

Meh, was excited about this place. Went to the Richmond location in October & we left because the line was wrapped around the building. We discovered this location had opened...so we went & men. The boyfriend got the Italian beef meal no gravy, it was well, bland AF. I got the chili cheese dog no onions, fried & cheese sauce. Hot dog was good, but #1 hotdog chili shouldn't have beans. #2 The cheese tasted like plastic (not as bad as Charley's cheesesteaks cheese but still plastic. I am not sure how many stars I should give. It's not that the whole trip was bad but the sandwich which is why we went there was definitely below getting any stars but they do have other good points. This was our first time visiting a Portillo's. We went to the one in Clermont, Florida. We ordered the Italian Beef sandwich. I had sweet peppers put on mine. Let's start with it had no flavor to the sandwich. They put 2 small pieces of peppers on it and no cheese. The bread was very soggy. I wouldn't recommend this sandwich to anyone. We also had the onion rings and they very good. I do give them credit on keeping everything clean for the customers coming in. There were a few workers constantly cleaning and that is very good. They had a lot of tables but I feel a little crowded. (too close together) All in all it had a few good points and a few bad. read more

Where do I even begin... Portillo's KATY, is so DISAPPOINTING. My husband and I were on our way back home from a long trip and were very hungry, so we decided to go to the NEW Portillo's in Katy, mind you it was 11:20 PM they close at 12 so we had made it on time. I had ordered 2 large drinks, a bacon cheeseburger, 6 piece chicken tenders, & 2 large cheese fries.First of all, I notice the staff goofing off from the drive through window, they forgot one large fry, & the burger was DISGUSTING. The Burger patty was definitely sitting out there or was undercooked. It tasted SPOILED. Took one bite and spit right back out. Why would they even serve that... not to mention the chicken tenders were rock solid. They may have been dipped into the fryer too many times. This type of service was unacceptable. I'm from Chicago and I know the food is not supposed to taste like this. Pure disappointment, it's honestly pretty sad how this location is giving a bad taste to the Portillo's name. From now on I will no longer be going to the Katy location. I will only go to the Richmond location. Katy if I could give you 0 stars I would. Definitely telling my texas friends to only eat at the Richmond location. read more

Ordered the hot dog and beef sandwich. Hot dog was pretty basic, and they left off the tomato and pickle. Also, it was not hot. The beef sandwich I got with hot peppers, mozzarella and gravy on the side. Very bland sandwich and gravy did not have much flavor. Fries were similar to Canes, but the onion rings were very good. I ordered a big beef sandwich dipped with hot peppers. The sandwich I received wasn't a big beef, wasn't dipped, and did not include the peppers on the side as requested. When I took the sandwich back, they wouldn't replace the sandwich. I lived in Chicago for years and was a regular at Portilo's. We had to try this place based on rave reviews and tempting photos of huge sandwiches. We were very underwhelmed. By the time you pay for all the "extras" to make your sandwich more than a dry roll with some meat, you are at $15+. The peppers were huge slabs, not chopped. None of the flavors were blended since everything was an "add on." We won't be going back. read more

Gross gross gross! Was excited a Portillo's opened in Katy as I heard the one in North Texas was good! We ordered 1-order French fries, 1-order onion rings, a double burger, Italian beef with gravy on the side, small drink and spent $45. The fried food is what severely dropped this rating down to 1-star. Tasted like old oil was used, food was not fresh and clearly had been sitting under a heat lamp for some time. The breading on the onion rings was horrible, not only being not fresh & cooked in old oil, the breading is terrible in texture and flavor. I love onion rings and these were some of the worst! Italian was decent with dip on the side and the double cheeseburger was rated by my 11-year old as the worst burger. Our short drive home and the bread was soooo soggy from what, I don't know. My wife is from Illinois (I think original home of Portillo's) and was thrilled when she saw they were coming to Houston. I remember her talking about their italian beef sandwich over the years and so I had very high hopes when we travelled out there to enjoy a treat. I had the italian beef and didn't like it at all (1-2 stars), so my wife traded with me for her chicago style hot dog (I gave that a 3-4 stars), so all in all a 3 STAR PLACE. I certainly wouldn't drive all the way out to Fulshear from Spring Branch again to go there and would only go to one much closer to home if my wife felt like she REALLY NEEDED A Portillo's fix :-) read more
