I've been here a number of times for coffee and pastries to go. I always end up waiting quite a while for my coffee, and the pastries are just OK. The lattes that I've ordered aren't that great, the milk tastes a little burnt. It's always been busy on the weekends when I've stopped by, so there may be more to the table service than I am experiencing, but from the counter/coffee/to go side it leaves a lot to be desired. read more

My family loves this place! We have been going here since their old location. great place to bring your kids for breakfast. It's good food and they are pretty quick (we are generally there pretty early)! They new building is great and has a ton of space. My husband loves getting the Corned Beef Hash and the Burger and Fries breakfast. I also love the Corned Beef Hash. Their specials are all really good. I generally get the special scrambles. The coffee is great , and they have unlimited refills! YES! The fruit is always fresh, and they have great baked goods. This is a cute little breakfast/lunch spot at an optimal location in the equally cute town of Middleton. Breakfast ends at 11 which is what we wanted, so lunch food had to suffice. Like another reviewer said, it's basically set up like Panera where you order at the counter, take a number, then get your own drinks and find a place to sit down. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating so you don't feel cramped and have space from other people. Honestly, the food was good but maybe a bit expensive. The CBLT and Deluxe grilled cheese sandwiches were amazing. But the Cuban sammie was even better! I love the bread they use for their sandwiches. The salad I got with The Cuban was so fresh and the simple house made vinaigrette was fantastic. I wasn't overly excited about the roasted garlic potato & broccoli soup as it was a little bland. We all shared a chocolate cherry muffin and chocolate croissant, which were both lovely sweet treats. Very friendly workers were so helpful and came around to check on us and clear our plates. Great place for breakfast or lunch. Plenty of healthy options to choose from at a decent price. It took a little while for us to get our food out but once they did, it was amazing! Food is pretty good. Coffee is good. My only complaint is that there is no quiet space for adults to read or work. I have packed up and left twice because of people with their loud children just plop down next to people who are clearly trying to concentrate. It's a big place. Can't we have some small part where a grownup can read the paper in peace? read more

Came here for lunch. One of the sandwiches we ordered had a curly black hair stuck in the melted cheese! (None of us has hair like this.) Yuk!!! We sent it back. No apology, no offer to comp anything, they just made another one (which we opened and checked thoroughly) and said "sorry for the wait." No mention that this wouldn't happen again, no acknowledgement that this was horrifying! Disgusting! Never coming back again!! read more

First time here and I love the place. The service was great. They were very accommodating with dietary restrictions. The 3 egg omelet was fantastic and the coffee was great! This is the type of place where you order at the counter and they give you a number and then bring the good out to you. My husband and I weren't super impressed. He got the meat burrito and it was "good". I had the corned beef hash. It was real corned beef and cubed potatoes, but I thought it was a little dry. We generally go here for breakfast when we can. The menu is limited, but the food is usually always good, and most important the coffee is the good stuff, (not the watered down Sunday morning back of church stuff you so often get in WI breakfast cafe's - and it's not SBs coffee either...thank God! ..... well maybe not considering the kind of coffee He often serves.....) Is it getting hot in here??. Anyway, you are your own waiter/waitress as well, so I find the service is usually good... but I can't say you will find the same. I'd say it's a solid choice. read more

New place is very disappointing. Sorry to say, because I really liked the old place. New place is very noisy. Not just lousy acoustics, but also some of the food prep is very noisy and not in the kitchen (blender). Coffee at new place is very weak. Increased prices are understandable, but some are over the top -- $6.75 for Oatmeal? Come on... Hopefully management will review this email, because all of the complaints are quite fixable. read more

We visit prairie cafe fairly often for breakfast. The food is decent and baked goods are tasty. It's a good place for family dining as we often see families with little kids early on Saturday or Sunday morning. However, today, when having breakfast, I noticed a hair in my potatoes. The tomato on my breakfast sandwich wasn't at all ripe and tasted awful. I complained and they offered me a new plate of potatoes but I'd already lost my appetite. A good looking place with excellent coffee and some great scones. The food though is only serviceable. Scramblers are often too heavy on the bell peppers and cheese, but runny eggs. Fried eggs can be over or under cooked with regularity. The sausage links are pretty good though I have too often found some bone or cartilage in them. Don't order the corned beef hash. Trust me. Deli meat! Are you kidding me? They have had some problems since they expanded, but they could step it up a few notches in the kitchen. read more

We were regulars here for years. Then they moved across the street and the environment wasn't as cozy, but the food seemed to be the same. Then sometime in the last few months there seems to have been a decision to raise prices and decrease quality all in one shot. On our last two visits the food has been luke warm, the quantities have been tiny, and I can't place the rest but things were just 'off'. Bummer! read more

Have always loved Prairie. We have looked forward to eating here Sundays when in Madison (which has been often the last 3 years). Got here today and found the Cafe had moved across the street. New space is okay, high ceiling makes it extremely loud. I miss the warm atmosphere of the old spot. Biggest issue is I think they forgot the recipes and seasonings at the old place. First time ever, we were horribly disappointed, after waiting 30 minutes for our food. Toast was burnt, sent it back and dug into my corned beef hash. Potatoes were not done and it was bland beyond belief. We sent the plates back and while they added a bit of seasoning it was still not "Prairie hash" and they threw the same eggs on grill to rewarm so now my medium eggs were hard. Maybe the new grill isn't seasoned enough yet. They also now clear the tables for you, instead of having a station for you to dump your own. Twenty minutes after we eere done someone came and cleared our plates away. I sincerely hope they find the old mojo! read more

I'm ready to report my major disappointment with what the new kitchen is producing. We really like the food here and the atmosphere, but we can't go that often because weekend mornings get so crowded that there aren't enough seats and there is no system for people to wait for a table to open up. It's a free-for-all and too chaotic to want to start a weekend morning that way. With two hungry kids, we can't really lurk around waiting for a table to free up. The second-to-last time we were there, we discovered after we ordered that there were no seats open and nowhere for the server to deliver our food to. So, last weekend when we went, we scoped it out and there were no tables, but the person at the counter wanted to take our order. I don't know why they keep taking orders when there is nowhere for people to sit. We looked around for a minute and decided it was too stressful to wait around for a seat and we left and went somewhere else for breakfast. They should have a waiting list system or something in place when it's that busy. read more
