I was wondering what Pret A Manger meant. I figured it probably didn't have anything to do with the crib in Bethlehem that the baby Jesus lay in after birth. So, I looked it up and found out that Pret A Manger means "ready to eat". I ordered a quad espresso, which had a smooth pleasant taste. However, that li'l drink racked up a $9.02 charge on the cash register. For price comparison, a quad espresso goes for $6 at Peets and $4 at Starbucks. *Follow up- they didn't even refund the money. They don't answer the phone. Now I will likely have to waste my own resources to go down there again to get my money back. Throw the whole shop away. Now I would've let it go and just told close friends if the women I notified of this issue didn't act like I made it up, and take the 2.99 brownie back because she said "you already had one." If I have to go elsewhere I have about 2 smooth minutes to make it happen so I walk up the manager (?), a south Asian woman, and tell her what happens, a Black (I think west African) woman comes up like Big baby Dee, starts digging in the quiche with her bare hands (I bet she didn't wash them afterward) and declares, "I DONT SEE A HAIR. This Prêt à Manger location in DC offers salads, soups and both cold and hot sandwiches. I visited this location around 6:30pm on a weekday. One of the refrigerated cases was covered (empty or broken?). The had a good selection of salads and cut sandwiches, but almost no selections of their soups or hot sandwiches. I picked up a pork cañitas burrito and a vegetable puree soup. I love their guava I fused lemonade (you can also have the guava on iced tea). Both the soup and the sandwich were very good. This chain also offers "toppings"(little cups of lemon wedges, fresh cilantro, croutons) for their soups, but when o asked for it I was told they had run out of them. At 7:30 am this restaurant was buzzing with customers. I knew that the day ahead of me was going to be a long day, so I wanted to get a fast breakfast which may be my only meal until late afternoon. When I came in there was already a small line of customers waiting to order. They had a couple of breakfast sandwiches already prepared and heated in the case so I pocked-up the Bacon Egg & Cheddar. Then I ordered a regular sized Chai Latte at the counter. It was ready a few minutes later,and I took a seat and began to go thru my work emails. This wasn't my career path or experience, but did sound interesting, and I had transferable skills. We agreed to meet for lunch near his office; he picked this Pret A Manger. The Experience: After getting a parking spot not far on K Street, I walked in to see that people could pick & choose various items conveniently in containers like sandwiches, salads, etc. The prices were a little expensive for the quality. I ended up getting a chicken noodle soup since I was unfortunately sick. The staff was nice, and the soup was just ok. Overall, I wasn't terribly impressed, but it wasn't a negative experience here either. As for the guy, he showed me his office, and the informal interview seemed to go well. Ultimately, I kept getting the runaround with a couple emails back & forth following up on the job status. I grabbed a wrap and a dessert which I thought was $8.00 and $3.00 only to find out it was actually $11.00 and $5.00 plus taz. I know DC tax is high but not that high! I absolutely love Pret for majorly two reasons; their light roast coffee and their no-fuss-grab-and-go food options. My go to fave for any time of the day is the DELISH chicken/avo sandwich! You HAVE to try it! The kettle chips are always good (although unhealthy) and my favorite way to eat em is to dunk em in the feta-tomato soup! Whenever they have feta/tomato soup and I happen to go to Pret, I have to grab a pack of chips to accompany it with - it's just right! They have a whole lot of other sandwich/salad options which are pretty good! And a lot of healthy snacks also. Our first DC disappointment. My husband and I stopped in here to grab an inexpensive breakfast. Although the thrust is on healthy options quality still lacks here. I picked up an egg white sandwich and small coffee. My husband chose a yogurt parfait with fruit. Refills on coffee are prohibited. I asked about their roasts and was given the basic answer light or dark. When I went to grab my small cup they were brewing the light roast so I had to settle for the dark. It was fair and not the quality I like when I grind and roast my own beans from my favorite coffee shops at home. My husband seemed to like his parfait. My sandwich was mostly a bun and tasted bland. I will credit them for this. All breakfast items in the grab and go are heated. Pastries and bananas are also available for purchase. Pret A Manger is a chain normally on a daily basis. Place is clean and well lit. I will also credit them with the fact that they are environmentally friendly in that they have recompostable napkins and donate their leftovers to shelters at the end of the day. Weighing the pros and cons I would say this place is average. You may be paying more for your breakfast but not nearly as much as you would if you are staying at a hotel and eating their food. read more

Great location in the heart of the city and to the left (at the NW corner of 17th and K St) when you get off the escalator at Farragut North (Farragut Square side). This location is plagued by homeless people who come here and loiter frequently. Two times ago, one homeless guy cursed out a guest because the guest was in his seat (which may have been true on other days...but no one owns a seat!). Last time, there was a homeless person hanging around outside talking frenetically. There's a lot of seating (window seating), tables/chairs, and cushy/comfortable armchairs, which is nice because each Pret seems to have its own unique layout and planogram. Unfortunately, not all locations stock the same items, such as the orange cardamom chocolate bar (which is delicious). The selection is really wide, the customer service fantastic, and the the ambiance really pleasant (except for if a homeless person accosts you). read more

The first Pret I ever went to was at union station and I would grab a sandwich on my way to NY. I discovered the one across from Farragut Square when I started volunteering with my church that has a homeless ministry that serves people the second Saturday of each month. After serving, I treat myself and my friends to PRET. It is a monthly treat. My favorite sandwiches are the chicken balsamic mozzarella, the Brie, tomato and arugula and the apple muesli and blueberry yogurt pots. The place is clean and I've never had a problem with service. Sandwiches are around $8 and pre-made. They are expensive compared to most sub places but I like the fresh baguettes and how everything is made fresh daily. And at the end of the night, they take the remaining food to the homeless- local shelters and pup kitchens. I'm willingly to pay more for a company that cares about the homeless. read more

There's so many pret a mangers here in DC, but I love them! It's so convenient, especially when you're rushing to take a quick lunch. Their salads, sandwiches, and wraps are all premade (they claim they make them fresh daily and donate the ones that didn't sell), but I've enjoyed all the ones I've tried. Prices are fairly standard - around $4-$8 an item. I've tried their nori veggie wrap, which is a wrap full of veggies and sauce, wrapped with seaweed. The seaweed wasn't crispy, but it tasted good. I've also had their spicy shrimp wrap, which was very good. The lettuce they used was all green- no browning and whatnot at all. The shrimp was tasty, and there were some spicy parts. So good. They also have cold pressed juices. I've never had one at other places before because they are priced around $8, even at whole foods, but pret a manger has cold pressed juices for $6. I tried their green juice (apples, spinach, kale, cucumber, and more??), and it was delicious. Got my vitamin A and such from that drink. Their chai latte is different though. It's tea bag brewed chai tea with some milk, but they also sweeten it with some syrup. I guess that's what threw me off. It was good its own way, but not something that I prefer as chai. I was almost done finishing the latte I purchased here this morning and brought to work when I felt something slip into my mouth. I stopped, pulled it out, and found what you see in my photo. A small hair that I don't even want to know from where it came. I'm very disappointed. I can't leave work right now but plan to stop by this location later and show the picture and get some sort of refund. I've never had an issue at the 1828 L street or 1432 K street location. Safe to say I'll never purchase anything ever again at 1701 K street. Update: I go back with my almost finished latte (hair included) and ask to speak with the manager. I explain the situation and ask that I get refunded for both the latte and the Brie/tomato/basil sandwich I had purchased with it, but had not eaten yet, and now didn't want to eat. Her response? "Okay....." No apology, just "Okay..." THEN she goes to process my refund and says I'm being refunded $9.97, yet my credit card was charged $11.97. Apparently I had been charged for the chicken mozzarella sandwich and not the Brie/tomato/basil. So a hair in my latte, overcharged for my food, and absolutely no apology. I like this location because of the variety of food available and the view overlooking the park. It tends to get pretty loud, especially with the pop/ dance music they play and loud conversations. Definitely not a quiet place to study or work. However, it's usually quite clean. The one thing I hate is having to enter a code for the restrooms. PretA Manger - FREE LUNCH. In order to promote the opening of its newest location on 17th and K street, Pret A Manger gave out free lunch on March 27th (the review is a bit outdated). In the havoc of Farragut North, I saw someone handing me a flyer for free lunch in front of Pret. There's no such thing as "free lunch" or so I thought. I stood in a long line, but was moving fastttt! As soon as I walked in, I was told that I got a free sandwich, popcorn, dessert, and bottle of water. I got the Garden Veggie sandwich. The sandwich was okay, I would give it 3/5 stars especially because there are many better sandwich places. The chocolate brownie was delicious (small but satisfying). The retail cost of this meal was about $15 and PretA Manger gave it all for FREE to hundreds of customers. I applaud the generosity of PretA Manger, who gives out free lunch nowadays? This place is great to get work done! The music and sometimes other patrons can be a little loud, but there are tons of table spaces and good lighting. There are 2 tops, 4 tops, and group tables. Some walls have outlets as well. Another great thing is the number of healthy food options! I'm trying to cut down on carbs like breads and pastries and they have a whole refrigerated section of healthy "pots", mini snack/meal cups. Pots such as overnight oatmeal, mixed fruit, yogurt+banana+honey, chicken+edamame, quinoa+arugula+cherry tomato+avocado+egg, etc! To me, they are all the same, but I have to commend them for keeping this store as clean as it is being next to the metro stop (Farragut North). There is a lot of foot traffic here and for them to keep it respectably clean is not something to really scoff at. I always stay away from Starbucks that are close to the metro stop because of its cleanliness. As for the food and coffee, it is standard and nothing special. The Wifi always works as intended - sometimes slow if there are a lot of people there. During peak hours, the store can be a bit crowded and finding a seat is a bit challenging. If I worked in the area, i could see myself eating here a lot. With my children we shared a sandwich, some mac and cheese (hot and had some cauliflower in it - yum), popcorn, and a drink. The flatbread is really soggy, the salmon is so bland and dry. It taste like chicken salad...sad.. but then the kicker....the ingredients are pickled cabbage, (not bad) salmon, (ugh), the sauce, (ok), cilantro, (deadly) and mint (can't even tell)....I was not aware that they layered the flat bread with just a bunch of cilantro...no no no no no no no....cilantro has a very strong distinct flavor...and it left such a bad taste in my mouth...I plucked all those nasty things out. That being said it was my fault and I will never get it again. As this my first time I have to come again and try something new....after ridding the flatbed of cilantro it's ok... all the Tzatizki sauce is at the bottom of the bread which is probably why it's super soggy. But overall not bad after ridding the cilantro...can't taste the mint and the pickled cabbage is sweet but nice. Salmon is still dry which really takes away from really making this taste good. Overall not a bad place. -take it back! After I finished my meal about 10 min later after walking, I had the runs. The food did not sit well, and I would love to find an excuse for why the food was ok and it's just me, but I cant! I eat alot normally different food in short time frames and never have I gotten the runs right after eating. So I said I'd be back...umm mm alot later than sooner. Smile! read more
