Worth the Drive from the South Bay Another Eat the World LA find -- and one of my favorite discoveries for Argentinian food! I will literally drive all the way from the South Bay to Santa Ana for the empanadas at Puerto Madero Argentinian Market & Bakery. As someone who is half Argentinian, I'm pretty particular about Argentinian food, and especially empanadas and chimichurri. I criticize almost every chimichurri I try at restaurants that serve it. These empanadas are baked, not fried, generously stuffed, flavorful, and incredibly well-priced for the quality and portion. They don't skimp on the filling -- the empanadas are thick and packed with protein, which makes them feel like an actual meal rather than mostly pastry. And the chimichurri is one of the most authentic I've found. That alone is worth talking about! I've picked up empanadas to bring to all kinds of people, and they consistently get the same reaction. My mom, who is Argentinian-born, loves them. My best friend's family, who is fully Argentinian, praises them. Even my Mexican grandmother has declared them some of the best empanadas she's had. That's a pretty impressive range of approval. I've walked in and ordered a dozen on the spot, placed orders for dozens ahead of time, and also tried other items like the Choripán and beef Milanesa sandwich. Everything has been consistently delicious. Whether I'm grabbing a few for myself, ordering a dozen for family, or bringing a big batch to share, Puerto Madero never disappoints. For me, this is absolutely one of those places where the drive from the South Bay to Santa Ana is completely worth it. I've stopped by here a few times over the years and I fell in love with the different varieties of soft drinks and hot foods available to eat and to.take home. It's mostly a small market for Latinos who are not Mexican but they also offer a deli area and hot foods like French fries and sandwiches popular in South America. Definitely want to come back get more of the ham and cheese sandwiches. If you are in the area, definitely recommend you stop by and give it a try. read more

Llevo casi 10 años viniendo aquí. Desde los 13 años a ahora que tengo 23. A definite hole-in-the-wall. It looks small from the outside but it's spacious on the inside. Upon entering, you see seating on the right hand side and the meat shop to the left hand side. Walking straight into the establishment, you'll see where to order. You order the food, you are handed your receipt and pay after. To pay is the rotating table you see at a grocery store, and it's near the point of entry. You don't wait too long for the food. My friend is vegetarian, so she ordered 3 Espinaca (spinach) empanadas. I had ordered one Carne (beef) empanada and one Espinaca (spinach) empanada. We ordered it with spicy chimichurri. It's not that spicy but there's a nice gentle kick to the palate. Trust me when I say I am sensitive to spicy foods. So this passes the spice test. Also, disclaimer to the chimichurri sauce, it is oily, so be careful. We asked for a spoon so we can add it into our empanadas. It was my first time here and the empanadas were so delicious and thick. I only could handle two. The people that sat near our table had ordered the turkey sandwich and it was massive. The pictures on the menu don't do the size of the sandwich justice. I'm definitely trying their sandwiches next time. read more

Came back to my fav empanada place. We order a dozen and usually eat a few and take the rest home to freeze and eat for snacks. My wife isn't a fan of the chivito sandwiches but I really like it. As you can see from the photo, it's quite a sizable meal. I usually eat half and take the rest home as a meal for the next day. The dozen empanadas come with 2 sauces and the sandwich comes with 1. We can on a Saturday and there was a pretty good local crowd watching a soccer game. All in all, an excellent pickup for $40. read more

Was craving empanadas and was in the Santa Ana area when I stumbled upon this little hole in the wall market. I ordered a doz empanada half chicken half beef to go. I would recommend calling ahead of time to place your order as these are freshly baked to order and take a bit of time to get them just right. After getting in the car and heading home I had to crack open the box because I just couldn't take the delicious smell anymore and boy was I happy I did. Best empanada I have had in a while. I cracked open the box, whipped out an empanada in my car and finished it in about 3 seconds. The crust was nice and flakey and stuffed with a good amount of meat. I ordered 3 beef and 3 chicken. Both were equally delicious. Washed them down with a huge bottle of Inka soda. You don't know what Inka is? Imagine a golden bumblebee gum flavored drink. That's what it reminds me of. The shop also sells a variety of International foods. I picked up some cookies, Melba toast and 2 a liter of Inka. Located in Santa Ana on 17th street near Walgreens. I've been on a hunt for the best empanadas in Orange County and this place comes close with cheapest price and most stuffed. They only had six different types but all of them were delicious. I ended up getting half a dozen and eating some there because they had an amazing spicy chimichurri that went perfectly with them. Each empanada was very filled and full of flavor. My favorite was their spinach. They had a tuna one that most places do not carry. That one was probably my least favorite but it still wasn't bad. Their chicken was really impressive.
