I was so happy and surprised to discover Pure Grain Bakery & Café. As someone who is originally from Germany, finding authentic German pastries here in California felt really special -- and it got even better when I found out the owner is actually from a neighboring village in Germany! Everything in the bakery looked absolutely delicious. We tried a quiche and a sweet pastry and both were amazing. They also have pretzels, which I'm very excited to try next time. The owners were incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even nicer. The bakery is located right in downtown Vacaville, so it's a perfect spot to sit outside on the plaza, enjoy your coffee, and have a pastry. I waited about 1- 2 minutes to be acknowledged while everyone just carried on as being "busy." Totally fine if they were that busy, but I was the only one who they made wait. And AFTER I WAS helped, the lighter shade of people were immediately helped and orders were taken... so not that busy if she didn't run back to finish up whatever had them keep me waiting instead of just taking my order and then get to the tasks since originally no one was behind me. My daughter, who is a local here in Vacaville, mentioned that it is a popular spot among the locals especially on the weekends and most of the time you won't be able to find an open seat... let's check it out. One thing I noticed immediately is that the cafe is bright and spacious inside with lots of natural lighting coming from the large windows. There are indoor and patio seating, plus it is next to the naturally shaded promenade, where you can also find relaxing in one of the picnic tables or benches. We stopped by on our way home and ordered the turkey cranberry sandwich, a cappuccino, and a London fog latte. The sandwich was bland, and my London fog was awful. The London fog tasted like it was just watered down tea with a little bit of milk, when it should be quite flavorful with the addition of vanilla syrup. I first started going to Pure Grain years ago when they just had the bakery on Eubanks. My old neighbor at that time was from Germany and swore by their bread and pastry. I loved their raspberry cookies and sandwiches. Now days it is the TownSquare location that is my favorite. You have to try their quiches. They are delicious. Service is friendly if not always speedy - Saturday mornings you have to wait sometimes for awhile especially during Farmers Market or Events. I did try today their purple onion bagel with their own cream cheese and that was freakin good!! The bagel was so nice and toasty and they didn't over load the cream cheese like other places. And the cream cheese was also very delicious. I also did try today their German potato's and they were good but a little too sour for me. I know a lot of people love sour so this would be for them for sure. The bacon on top of the potatoes was great too. I think I found my new spot. I did appreciate the make your own sandwich since my kids are picky, but I asked for no mayo or condiments and still got mayo... which of course is the end of the world for a 5 year old. The fruit smoothies did seem very sugary. I had assumed they would be made with real fruit but sounds like it comes from a box. The burger was tasty. Service was otherwise decent. The chicken fried steak here is unique, in my experience. I believe it is hamburger. The breading is schnitzel style and very light and crunchy. The gravy is creamy and has hamburger and cooked onion in it. The flavor is good, with light seasoning and no unusual spices. My one complaint is that there is a sprinkle of chives over part of the steak and potatoes. I feel that the flavor of chives is overpowering and I don't like the crunch, but that is a personal taste. I'm very happy that the cook goes easy on the salt. This dish comes with fried potatoes which are very tender and tasty, as well as fried eggs. Overall, this type of chicken fried steak is not to my preference, but the love put into it gives cause for 5 stars anyway. read more

It's right in the center of downtown Vacaville by the library. So parking is a breeze. It's what you think of when you think small town cafe. Service is order and pay at the counter then take a number and seat anywhere. For drinks stay near the counter. The drinks won't be delivered to you like the food. We found out the hard way wondering why it took so long. I had the mango smoothie with whipped cream. It tasted like fresh mangos! I really liked it. Service was a little slow on a weekend morning. They were busy. We almost had to ask for to go boxes because it was almost 30+ minutes before our food came out. Go earlier if you're looking for pastries or baked goods. Oh my god if you can stop here do it. The food was amazing. I actually am happy they aren't in my hometown cause I would go bankrupt! I got the breakfast sandwich and was able to choose what bread I wanted it on so I picked a jalapeño baked circle thingy? So good! My husband got the chicken fried steak (pork though as opposed to traditional beef). The gravy was out of this world good. And that was just their breakfast food. We stopped by this local cafe to give it a try and we were not disappointed! We were greeted by the friendly cashier as she gave us time to look over the menu. We decided to order avocado toast, jalapeño bagel (not pictured), lox salmon bagel, iced vanilla latte and a hot caramel vanilla latte. Our total came out to $33.90 including tip, which I felt was fair compared to prices these days. As we waited we checked out the patio area which was cute and cozy but it was a little too cold to eat outside. Our coffees were good, the avocado toast was delicious and the sourdough bread tasted fresh which made it delicious! The lox bagel was probably a 3/5 for me but wasn't bad. Now the star of the show was the jalapeño and cheese bagel. It was probably one of the best I've ever had and was sooo soft and flavorful with the right amount of spicy ness. I stumbled on Pure Grain Bakery out for a walk in the spring and was looking for coffee. I popped in here for a frappe. I am so glad I did!! I ended up ordering cookies, cannolis, the schnitzel dinner special, a full coffee cake, oh yea, and the frappe!! The frappe was better than any Starbucks frappe I've had by far. It was flavorful and handcrafted with a balance of syrup, espresso and cream. The dinner was so tasty. It was balanced with flavor. Perfectly dredged and fried and the side salad of carrots and dressing is so refreshing (I admittedly have tried to make it and cannot get that burst of immediate flavor like theirs) I never photographed the first dinner and then a week later I went back because it was so good and I was craving a hearty home cooked meal for myself and didn't want to cook dinner. I order the dinner special again . Chicken cordon bleu with gravy and mashed potatoes . OMG. I can confidently say probably the best cordon bleu I've ever had, but admittedly I've only had a handful of them in my life...so I'll go out to say best and creamiest mashed potatoes, best gravy that stayed creamy throughout and didn't separate or taste bland like flour and the chicken was pristine. I rant this highly because to put out humble , consistently on point good food, and out of a bakery is a win!! They get a high five and a good job all day. The coffee cake was moist and dense at the same time and the fruit toppings (I've tried lemon and berry) are balanced so well with the cake. Lastly, they are kind and welcoming. I do enjoy the sweets and bread but the curry wurst was not authentic. They used a semi kielbasa sausage instead of an authentic German bratwurst and dumped an overload of curry ketchup. My boyfriend and I got breakfast sammies that were so soggy the bagel didn't hold, then when I came back to fix it, the bagels were just meh. WELL, a couple of weekends ago he wanted to get the same sandwiches, I was hesitant but I decided everyone needs a second chance. So first off, the service. I really wish I could remember the lady's name who was taking orders. She was so SO nice, that's always welcome in the morning. I got a lox bagel and my boyfriend got a bacon, egg, cheese bagel. She asked us what type of bagel we wanted as well!! We didn't have options last time so we both got our favorite: jalapeno cheese! She also asked if we wanted additional veggies to our sammies. My boyfriend ordered the breakfast burrito and I would definitely order that next time instead. The burrito had sausage, potatoes, eggs, and cheese, and it came with a side of salsa. I believe there was an option of what kind of meat and cheese you want. The cinnamon roll tasted just as good as Cinnabon, but not as sweet and these rolls seemed bigger. I got a white mocha and I really liked their coffee. Mine wasn't that sweet in comparison to the vanilla caramel latte that my boyfriend got. They are in need of a modern update and more lights. Food was okay. We had the veggie quiche. It tasted good and it was fluffy, but looked more like a frittata because it was very flat. No salad to accompany the dish so it felt like an incomplete dish and a small portion. The beehive cake was so dry. The custard was extremely sweet and very thick. You don't get a choice of your salad or dressing, so it just comes with ranch. The soup of the day was cream of mushroom, which was pretty good. My sister liked how they served a small loaf of bread with the soup. For my build your own sandwich, I got turkey on Dutch crust with provolone, spinach, mayo, and onion. Excellent little bakery/cafe in downtown Vacaville. I've lived in Vacaville for many years and this is one of my favorite spots to visit for brunch on the weekends. They have an adorable patio and they are pet friendly! I'm vegan but my boyfriend is not, and we both enjoy eating here. My boyfriend had the breakfast sandwich and I had the house potatoes and avocado toast. The toast came out too light the first time but they redid the order no problem.
