Walking into this place, it smells and looks like what heaven would be. It took me a good 5 minutes to decide what to try and I was really lucky there was no line (although one formed soon after). I picked out their white chocolate raspberry scone to try in the store and an almond croissant, egg and proscuitto brioche and apple turnover to go. Having only tried the scone, it is definitely a heavy treat with a nice caramelized crumb and on the sweeter side, it was deliciously buttery. I couldn't really taste the white chocolate but the occasional bites of raspberry were little pockets of refreshment while the actual scone itself was crumbly and scrumptious. Overall, theres a reason this place is so popular, it just takes a long time picking something! read more

Phenomenal bakery! I honestly love bakeries/cafes that offer a lot of options! Coming here was like going to the bakery section at Safeway lol! It was a sweet foodie heaven! We ordered the chocolate almond croissant and rhubarb crumble pie. Both were enormous and we couldn't finish it in one setting. I never had rhubarb crumble pie before but it was a total game changer. It wasn't overly sweet and the rhubarb added a nice sour taste, complimenting the sweetness of the crumble. The chocolate almond croissant was not like any chocolate almond croissants I had before. The almond paste was more creamier compared to normal almond croissants and the surprising part is that the chocolate was infused in the almond paste. Usually chocolate croissants are like pain an chocolates where you just have two bars of chocolate. But this one was whipped into the paste creating a creamy chocolate almond paste. Very delicious! Incroyable! Fantastique! Okay, I know there aren't too many French speakers in BC, but I was excited to be in Canada so throw me a bone, okay? Purebread is so. damn. good. that it transcends languages anyways! Oh my god. I'm so overwhelmed coming into this place. There's so much selections, I didn't know what to get. Even though there's a wait line, the line goes by pretty quick. The place is a little bit small, but luckily we were able to find a table down the small hallway toward the restroom. If you're looking for carbs, this is the place. For a bakery place, it's pretty legit. All the bake goods looked delicious and the portion is actually quite large and filling. I got the spinach, potato, and cheese slab pie. Never had that before, but it actually taste like a quiche, but with no egg. The crust was pretty flaky and the flavor was like a quiche. I'd enjoyed it. The pastries and bread seem very European. It's a feast of the eyes upon entering Purebread. The presentation and selection are simply amazing! The lady behind the counter was patient answering my questions. I ended up with the chocolate almond croissant. This pastry is a contrast of textures - certainly not your standard run of the mill flavored croissant. The silky chocolate flavored almond filling is thick and abundant. It is contrasted by the bready inner and the flaky outside. To finish it off - crunchy almond slices and chocolate drizzle. We ordered 2 coffees and somehow managed to narrow it down to 3 items to share. It's vacation after all, and we had just spent the previous week hiking the Canadian Rockies so... #dontjudge! We split a spinach + feta turnover, a chocolate almond croissant, and a tomato and spinach frittata. Each one was stellar, but I'm literally drooling over the memory of this chocolate almond croissant. The croissant was cut in half and filled with (I believe) a combination of melted chocolate and almond paste, and drizzled with chocolate and powdered sugar. 5 stars for customer service 3 stars for the few bakery items I tried Something I was pleasantly surprised with here was their customer service! We happened to drop by a couple minutes after closing time and they still let us in with a smile and still gave us really good service. Of course I didn't want to overstay our welcome and keep them there too much beyond their regular hours but they were great and even didn't make a fuss when we sat down to taste a few items before we left while they were cleaning up / closing down. I appreciated that! As for the food... I am a huge Bakery fan, but everthing I tried here was a bit too sweet. I can't believe I actually just said that :o !! My friend got a peanut butter go-go bar which was ok- tasted relatively healthy but wasn't really my thing taste and texture wise. We also tried the Almond chocolate croissant, which I was surprised tasted so fresh and crispy still, considering it was bought and consumed at the end of the day. However, the chocolate filling was a bit grainy and didn't quite taste like chocolate. Not sure what was in that filling, but it wasn't to my liking. Upon the recommendation of a customer in front of me, I also decided to throw in a crack bar to my order. It was good with a first small taste, but was way too sweet for me. I can see how people would love this place though. At closing, there was still an ample selection of things to choose from, and from what I hear, during regular hours the counters are busting full of items to try. Purebread is pure awesome! Albeit expensive, their portions are fairly large and can easily be shared. My favourite dessert pastry would be the amazing chocolate almond croissant while my favourite savoury pastry would be the chive, sour cream and cheese scone. Both are quite large and dense, so I honestly have to say that I prefer not to eat the entire pastry even though I have a huge appetite. The selection at purebread is amazing and the staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I have been here during different times of the day and I find that they're always well stocked. There's almost always at least three of each pastry/cookie/cake so you don't have to worry about your favourite item running out! read more

As soon as I walked into Purebread I realized that I may have just died and gone to bread/pastry heaven. This place makes smaller bakeries look extremely tiny in that their selection is huge; and I really mean it. Their display case is just flowing with different kinds of pastries, muffins, baked goods, cakes, breads, cookies - you name it. Even if you're not much of a sweet tooth, I guarantee that you will find at least something that will catch your eye. There are a good number of savory options. Coming with a group of friends was perfect because that meant sharing (which I don't normally do...) and trying a variety of different things. We tried one of the savory muffins which looked like spinach/chives. Having a savory treat was a good balance to all the sweet stuff that I was trying. I personally chose the earl grey lavender scone which was delightful. It had a very floral taste from the lavender, but you could really taste the earl grey. You can see the earl grey tea leaves throughout the pastry which I adore! Another friend tried the salted caramel cookie which was just oozing with caramel. If you're a caramel lover, this may be the perfect treat for you. A lot of the breakfast like savory scones/breads were also really good. If you're a fan of bacon and eggs, etc. they have quite a few options to choose from as well. I thought the frittata was quite delicious as well! I was extremely tempted to bring these pastries home... They have lovely looking loaves of bread and all their sweet treats made me want to bags home to friends and family. On our walk through Gastown making our way to Chinatown one morning, we stumbled across Purebread. When I first walked in, I was overwhelmed by the amount of baked goods on display. Moreover, the aroma of freshly baked breads and pasteries. This cafe has high ceilings with several tables and counter top seating. At about 9am on a Saturday, this place was packed. We initially had thoughts of just getting our coffees and pasteries to go, but a table opened up so we sat for a few minutes. We got a Raspberry Loaf and an Apple Tart. And by the way, the "Apple Tart" has a different name but I didn't get to read the whole thing and I wasn't able to take a picture of the sign in front of it either. So for now, it'll be referred to as the Apple Tart. The Raspberry Loaf I got was very similar to the Iced Lemon Pound Cake at that Coffeebucks place. Only this one had real raspberries in it. It was good but the frosting was much too sweet. I took it all off and didn't eat it. The Apple Tart was good though. Not very sweet with a light and buttery outside. I don't know what kind of coffee they served but it was really smooth. It really hit the spot. If I'm ever in the area again, I would go back. read more

The place is always busy, the variety of pastries is wide and it is just so easy to get sucked in to returning to try the rest of the menu. Their hazelnut crunch torte ($6) is out of this world outstanding: moist chocolate cake with the right amount of sweetness with crispy kind of Heath bar-like topping. We bought a sourdough wholewheat bread that was quite good. But we had a birthday to celebrate so we also bought 2 mini cakes. One was the flourless chocolate cake and the other was a peach cake. The peach cake was very good. But the flourless chocolate cake was very mediocre. Everybody in my family said it just didn't taste like it had much chocolate. I went back to the store to buy more bread and gave feedback about the chocolate cake. The young lady to whom I spoke to would not accept the feedback as valid. She insisted that this cake was one of their most popular and it couldn't be mediocre. I finally saw the ingredient list and that clarified why it tasted like that. The ingredients in order are: Brown sugar, margarine, chocolate, ... No butter or cream. I now understand why their cake didn't taste right. I don't recommend this cake. read more

During my trip to Vancouver, Purebread was one of the bakeries that I knew I had to visit as I had read several reviews and everyone was raving about how great it was. I have to say that after going to Purebread and trying some of their pastries, it definitely did not disappoint! Upon walking into the bakery, I immediately liked the atmosphere - it was a cute, homey space with a hipster vibe to it. The variety and smell of the pastries draws you in right away and it was so hard to pick just a few for my afternoon walk around downtown Vancouver. I ended up picking the Earl Grey scone and the apple tart - both of which I didn't regret getting! My only regret is that I didn't get a chance to go back before my trip was over! The Earl Grey scone had a strong Earl Grey flavour to it, which I appreciated as some bakeries make their scones with a very subtle hint of flavour. The flavour may not be for everyone though but tea lovers will love it. It was also soft and crumbly as I bit into it with each bite melting in my mouth. It was delicious and the perfect afternoon treat! I also really enjoyed the apple tart - it actually left me speechless for a few seconds when I took my first bite as I was savouring the fresh, homemade goodness of it. It didn't have that sugary apple pie taste to it that some pies can have - the shell and fresh apples in this tart just blended together so well and it just reminds you of home cooked baking but more stylish and in a cute setting. Upon walking in to this magical place, your nostrils will be assaulted by the scent of butter and warmth and fluffiness. This dangerous, toxic aroma will possibly compel you to acquire more than three types of cake, several scones, an entire loaf of bread, and countless samples. Am I saying this just because it happened to me? From the lack of table space between the hours of 3 and 5, I can confidently say there's an allure to these carbs in every variety that would lead even the most virtuous of Whole-30/paleo/gluten-free adherents into temptation. If you get one thing, get a scone. The perfectly crumbly apricot cherry vanilla is the clear winner. Ginger comes in second because it's a little tougher texture-wise, but those delectable ginger morsels are to die for. The vegan coconut tasted more like bread - I'd pass. The blueberry compote-topped scone was likewise uninspiring, and in contrast to the saccharine compote, the bread part tasted kind of like cardboard. Bar-wise, the chocolate chip brownie creation is somehow more decadent than the sum of its parts. The OMG is aptly named, and will dependably provoke this reaction in any diehard chocolate lover. The banana chocolate chip bar is oddly cold, and was just OK by my book, but my sister swore by it. There are some interesting flavors here. The chocolate rosemary (Adults Only) cookie has a very strong rosemary taste that I found very off-putting. Likewise, the lemon lavender loaf had a pretty strong taste of lavender, so you have to be chill with that. Still better than the lemon buttercream loaf, which had delicious icing, but was a little too cake-y/not moist enough for my liking. And because it's called PureBREAD (really, maybe it should be purecake?), we had to sample a loaf per day. The cranberry walnut was standout, as was the super seedy (and it felt *somewhat* wholesome eating it because pumpkin seeds are healthy, right?). The rosemary was delicious as well, but more run-of-the-mill. If you're craving savory, go for the jalapeno cheddar scone or this little egg muffin creation with bacon. The tomato pizzette creation was good, but there are better things to be had in this spread of infinite wonders.
