I was excited to have the opportunity to try the Peruvian breakfasts at Puro Sabor on Van Nuys Blvd a few blocks away from Van Nuys City Hall. They only serve breakfasts on weekends and drew a crowd. Parking on the street is free only on Sunday. The glass tops over the table cloth give the restaurant a classy look. The walls are nicely decorated with Peru scenic pictures. The only problem I had was the menu. There is no English descriptions for breakfasts and I had to ask the waiter for explanation. He spoke perfect English and was very pleasant, however, I still didn't feel comfortable asking him to tell me every item on the menu as the restaurant was busy on that day. The 1st combo would have been my 1st choice but the told me that they were out of chicharones. made of fried pork rinds, one of the main items for the combo due to the big group that was there before me. It made me curious about it and I will have to go back to this restaurant. I ordered the combo that came with the Peruvian tamale and fried sweet potatoes served with seasoned onions. The Mexican tamales are more flavorful than the Peruvian tamales, I was still glad that I got to try a different version. It could be a healthier version without the lard that is commonly used in making the Mexican tamales. I ordered the pumpkin and sweet potato fritters to go. Usually come here because of the great food although horrific service. This is always one lady, who doesn't greet and is very dry when talking to the customers. However, one night my family and I rushed to here, came in at 8:40 and was denied service. The same waitress that's usually there said they were closing, even though the sign says they close at 9. I know the real reason was that they didn't want to cook or clean after us. We came on a friday night. Expect a long wait. Don't come here very hungry because the smells of the food will torture you. It took forever to get even just our water! There were only 2 people waiting on 12 busy tables. Granted they're polite and smiling but I'm hungry and getting cranky. How long does it take to make a cold ceviche?? The food wasnt bad. The ceviche was good and the beef was so-so. If you want better food opt for Cuban and go to El Criollo up the street. And why didnt anyone warn us about the (small) box of "homemade cookies" they were "recommending"?! The lady offered it to us first, we politely refused. Then the man came back and "recommended" it once again. We were wrong to assume that they were free since we thought he wouldn't bring it by again when we already said no. We had barely said our thanks when voila! Out from the other hand comes the receipt with the $5 charge for the cookies already included! Were they ever planning to take no for an answer??! Amazing food. This is the place to go to when looking for real traditional Peruvian cuisine. Their lomo saltado is very tasty! The green sauce is to die for. When I'm in the area, this is my favorite place to go to. The staff is very nice and attentive. The place is very welcoming and their prices are great. I highly recommend Puro Sabor to anyone who really loves great food! The owner is always around making sure that her customers are satisfied with their order. Looking for a place to eat this past wednesday around 8:30pm after meeting up with friends, my g/f was craving Peruvian food. I did a quick yelp on the Iphone and found this spot.. I've never had peruvian food before, so my expectations weren't the highest. I left unsatisfied, full, but not stuffed. We get in, and the waitress is obviously in no hurry to serve us, even though the place was empty other than one other table. Maybe she was upset that we came in just before closing? I don't know. As we waited for her to clean the table (how does an empty restaurant have so many dirty tables), we perused the menu. The first thing to jump out at me were the prices. Not exactly cheap, definitely not a place to pop in and get a cheap bite at. And it seemed like almost everything came with french fries, which didn't seem too authentic to me. We started with an order of yucca ala huancaina and I ordered the pollo al vino, she the grilled chicken breast. After we place our order, the server gives us a basket of bread containing TWO small rolls. I don't know if they bake this fresh or if it's from Costco, but the bread was stale and bland. I'm glad she only brought us two rolls, because any extra would have went to waste. However, she never came around to refill the basket, which kind of bothered me, especially considering that we were the only ones there. The yucca was deep fried, served with a hollandaise type sauce. I'm assuming this is the huancaina, because there nothing special about the yucca, which were more like tasteless fries. Somehow the dipping sauce justified another $2.25 to be added to the appetizer's price. I honestly don't feel like writing anymore about this place to I'll sum it up quickly: The chicken breast was tasteless and undercooked, the pollo al vino tasted like a frozen tv dinner, and the service sucked. My g/f has had peruvian food several times before, so apparently we're going somewhere else to change my opinion of the cuisine because this place does not give an accurate reflection of it. read more

There are several Peruvian restaurants in the Van Nuys area and this is one of our favorites. We've been here a couple dozen times and have had several dishes, all of which were great. Lomo saltado, excellent flavor and tender meat. This is made with strips of beef, tomatoes, onions and french fries and is prepared with a very tasty and we'll seasoned sauce. Tallarin saltado de pollo, also excellent and made in a similar fashion to the Lomo saltado except it's prepared with noodles instead of fries. The ceviche mixto is excellent and is a good portion of mixed fish, octopus, shrimp and squid. The aji de gallina is also tasty, although I have had better at other places. They give you hot rolls with butter and their aji sauce. Sauce is good, bread is just ok. Prices are reasonable, service is decent...not as great when they are busy as there's usually only one waitress regardless (about 10 tables in the entire restaurant). Metered parking on street is a little scarce at times as is free parking in back. Highly recommend. Our other favorite is Chios on Sepulveda, also in Van Nuys. read more

We've been back to Puro Sabor a couple times since my first review. There's an English menu now. Unfortunately the ceviche hasn't been as good as it used to be. What changed? It's still good, and seems fresh but just not as amazing, more of a mass-produced quality. I'll still go back next time I'm in town tho. read more

Use to be real good, Now the 2 girls that wait tables are on the cell phone all the time. They don't even pay attention to the food they bring to the table like raw fish and burnt bread. Even if you tell them you want very mild on the chilli they make it so spicy, you can barely eat it. Do not recomend it. read more

This is the best Peruvian food in Los Angeles. If you want to pay for high end Peruvian- Angeleno imitation fusion, go elsewhere. Service is so-so, restaurant is coffee shop simple. I have been going to Peru twice a year for the last 10 years, and this is the most authentic and true to the top Peruvian restaurants in Peru. There are a number of Spanish Language interpreters from Peru who work in the Van Nuys courthouse, and they all go here. Whenever I am in Van Nuys, I stop in. read more

Yummy. Food is very fresh. Lomo saltado, fried plantains, and ceviche are better here than other peruvian places I've tried. They also have a unique item I can't find at other Peruvian places - papa relleno- or stuffed potato, a fried potato filled with raisins, olives and ground beef. I used to think the prices were high here, but they're standard compared to other places, and you get way more flavor for your money here, hence the name. Luckily, you'll never have to wait for a table or service. It's small, busy at times, but never packed. Limited parking in the back. Call-in to pick up is great too. read more

This is one of the few Peruvian restaurants my wife and I frequent. We like to stay in the valley and there are not that many really great options for Peruvian. The food is consistently good. I usually get either the Lomo Saltado or the Saltado De Mariscos and I'm always satisfied. The chicken causa is really good and my wife likes the seco de cabrito, The ambiance leaves something to be desired and the service can be a little slow even when they are not busy but overall it's good.
