Horrible experience from beginning to end. We walked in at 11:20 and were 'greeted' with 'you know we close at 12'...yes I understand that but it's 11:20, plenty of time to have a late dinner. The food came out quickly and was as good as can be expected from a diner..but the entire time we were there the waitress and 'host/manager/cashed' were staring us down and we felt incredibly rushed...the busser even started vacuuming around us...eventually the waitress asked if we were having anything else and left us the check. When I first walked in my first thought was "dirty". The floors were covered in food crumbs and dirt. I decided to give it a chance. The hostess seated us, and our table wasn't even clean! The Purple Steer has been a staple for my friends, boyfriend, and I for quite some time when we're hungry late at night. We haven't had very many problems, in fact, no major ones I can think of off the top of my head. At times, the service can be slow but other than that we don't have any complaints. We live nearby so the drive is nothing, and the food continually satisfies. My favorite dish on the menu is the BLT Club sandwich - with some ranch to dip everything! - I believe this place deserves more credit. The Southern Skillet comes with scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage, cheese, onions and is very flavorful. I order this item every time that I go to the Purple Steer. Omg. They 1st of all need to clean the washroom. It reeked like piss and shit sprayed around the toilet. But the main thing was I ordered an omelette and i should have known when the waitress brought the food and it smelled really strong not like fresh eggs. My stomach has been in knots. As my daughter and I have thought about plans to travel to the area for the holidays, this is always the first place we talk about stopping to eat. We have been frequenting the Steer in Highland for about 30 years. In the last 5 or 6 there as been a gradual decline over all, service not quite up to snuff, the staff are dressed way to casual, to the point of being sloppy, food is good but inconsistent, had bad items several times this last year. Still, we like the place and have kept going back. Today, we went in for breakfast. The hostess was surly, to us and also to the single bus person she had on the floor, acted like it was way to difficult to find us a table, no greeting or smile. Finally seated us on the empty side of the restaurant, on the north wall, as far from the area the wait staff had tables as possible. Said nothing and left us. So we sat. The same hostess seated another couple on the opposite side from us and had words with the buss person again. And we sat. No water, no coffee, no one even looking our way. I was hungry, I had had some fasting blood work done and finally after about 8 minutes I asked my husband if he wanted to keep waiting or we could go to the Round the Clock? We left. He stopped at the desk and told the hostess she might have paid some attention to us. She said she would send us some one no. He said no thanks we would go someplace else. she said "Good! S O S for the Purple Steer! I was a regular. Two or three times a week or more. It used to be very convienient. It is almost like it has been taken over by new owners who have no idea of the food business. Sunday morning 10 am. A busy day. The moman who is trying to work the cash register is also trying to wait on customers at the counter. It doesn't work. The Purple Steer has the slowest kitchen on Indianapolis Blvd . No Joke here. There are too many other good restaurants with good service on Rt 41 to waste your time here. They have to learn that you just can't dump on regular customers. They will spend their money elsewhere.
