Baited and switched by the Service Department. Set up an appointment for our 12K service through a telephone agent. She helped me with finding the correct time in order to qualify for a "Happy Hour" discount. When arriving at the dealership for the service, my wife was told that this was not what the service special was for, and the price would be double. Keep in mind now, the agent and I discussed over the phone exactly what we needed (12K miles service) and what the price point would be for that service. She did not mention any higher level service or anything like that. Needless to say, my wife walked out of there. An increase of $170 isn't going to take us to the poorhouse, but seriously, if you're gonna play dirty like that, what else are you doing to people's cars over there?!?! You would be wise to avoid Putnam for any kind of business. I have been without a car for years and last time I went, I had my mom as my negotiator. Getting a car can be a confusing and scary process, but not at Putnam Subaru! I contacted them ahead to make sure I could test drive (amidst Covid everything)-- as I would suggest you do as well-- and got a reply from Miguel Reyes who took care of me through the whole process! I test drove the car and upon deciding that was going to be my new ride, Miguel got everything going for me quickly. Of course I had a lot of questions regarding everything from insurance to payment plans and got some (metaphorical) hand holding along the way! They gave me what I thought was a great price and explained all of the options along the way. They cleaned the car while I was doing paperwork and answered all of my questions. Try calling to get information about a car that was purchased from them. No response. They seem like they just want to sell sell sell and up sell. When I am ready to purchase my third Subaru, I will probably go somewhere else because I'm fed up with idiot replies when I call. The person that answers the phone doesn't know jack. It's hit or miss with service as well. In the beginning, I would say the customer service was top shelf. Now it's hit or miss. Nice, rude, rushy, polite, dumb... there is no continuity. i was so traumatized by my experience at Subaru, it has taken me a while to write a review. I was a faithful customer and brought my Subaru for service since 2016. Over the past year the service dept caused 3 oil leaks: 1) folded the oil plug gasket, 2) stripped the drain plug, 3) cracked the oil pan. They did at least repair the damage for free. I was very discouraged and contacted "customer loyalty" to consider replacing my car. I wanted a hybrid AWD Honda. I was not in the best shape having recently had major surgery and I feel I was taken advantage of. I understood the car I was purchasing was the hybrid AWD model, but I discovered when I brought it home that it was a regular gas 2 wheel drive model. I had neglected to pay the small fee to allow return of the car. I met with the General Manager and while he said he understood how I could feel mislead, it is "buyer beware" and I should have checked the VIN number for the car to confirm its specifications. Really?? (Note: I did request a printout of specs and neither fuel source or drive was listed). I returned the car and was charged a several thousand dollar return fee. I opened the dealership door and was instantly greeted by Max Garcia, a salesman. Hard to know if he was smiling behind his mask, but I assumed so. His voice was warm and genuine. That warmth remained throughout our conversations, over two days. I needed time to decide, and Max never pushed, pressured, or hurried me. He listened, carefully, making me feel as if my car buying needs were truly important to him. As a 62 year-old woman, that was important to me. I am re-reviewing my experience here as I was treated like absolute crap after they got my business. The sales guy Mitch called me a few days later after my purchase to see if i would bump the 4 stars i had given them to 5 which i did. After that i was in contact with him back and forth for the cargo cover of my subaru. He said he has a spare one that he got managers approval to ship it to me as i didnt live close by to the dealership. 3 weeks went by i received nothing. We texted back and forth a few times, he said he was going to ship it that day. And then nothing. I call to find out he no longer worked there. The person who picked up the phone hung up on me twice. I asked to speak to the manager and he wouldnt let me. He rudely said - "the cargo cover is here - pick it up or forget it" then he hung up. He spoke to me so rudely- i couldnt believe thats how you speak to a customer! To be treated this way after spending thousands of dollars at your business is pretty shocking. Do not shop at this dealership. They lie and will go back on their word the moment they can get a better deal. If you must, here's some advice before I get into our experience: (1) don't trust a word they say; (2) if they offer you a car that's not delivered yet, insist on putting down a deposit; (3) avoid sales manager Marc at all costs; and (4) don't pay their ridiculous "market condition" markups - after Putnam went back on our agreement, we bought a 2022 Forester Premium the same day from another dealer for under MSRP. Weeks ago, my girlfriend was shopping for a Forester. We had a seemingly great experience test driving cars at Putnam. When she got a quote from another dealer at MSRP, the sales rep* at Putnam confirmed in an email that he would match that price for a specific Forester that was slated to be delivered later in February. In an exchange of a few emails, they confirmed a deal: that car, by the end of February, MSRP, conditioned on an acceptable test drive. She stops looking for cars at other dealers, because she's got this one lined up. Fast forward to yesterday, the last day of the month. The rep calls mid-morning and tells my girlfriend that the car has arrived, but we need to get there fast or they might sell it to someone else. She says that's not acceptable, we have a deal, but we will be there between 1:00 and 1:30. He says he has the keys in his pocket but can't control what his manager (Marc, it seems) might do. The rep calls back at 1:00, when we are on the road five minutes away, and says they're selling the car to someone else for $10k over MSRP. My girlfriend says that's unacceptable, we had an agreement. We arrive at the dealership. The sales rep sheepishly says he's really sorry but he doesn't have authority to do anything for us. We ask to talk to someone who does, and we get put in an office with sales manager Marc. Marc tells us there's nothing he can do, the car's already been sold. Later, he's cagey about that - it hasn't already been sold, they're just finalizing the paperwork. We'll probably never know exactly what happened. He talks over us through the whole meeting. Acts like it's unreasonable for us to expect them to honor their deal. He says it's common for different reps to agree to sell the same on-order car to different customers, as if there's no way they could be expected to track that. (This conflicts with the rep's implication that someone came in off the street that day to buy the car - again, we'll never really know.) Marc tells us we didn't have an agreement. When we show him the emails, he's off guard for a minute, and then says it was an offer but not an agreement. When I point out that it was an offer that we accepted, which is an agreement, he says he doesn't have authority to speak to that. He says he doesn't know where the general manager is. Marc says he is not responsible for what his sales rep told us, and he himself is not someone who goes back on his word. Plays for sympathy by telling us his life story. Great - maybe put a sign on the door that the sales reps don't speak for the dealership. Marc says we didn't put down a deposit. No one ever suggested we should. The rep had told us he would sell us the car for the price we wanted. In hindsight, it feels like they were intentionally leaving their options open while leading us on to think we had a deal (because we did), but who knows. Marc refuses to send us an email confirming that they won't sell us the car. We tell Marc we had an enforceable agreement and would try to enforce it if they wouldn't honor it. He tells us to leave. If our experience isn't enough, look at reviews from a few months ago on here and you'll see folks with similar stories. Don't trust the good reviews - we overheard someone else at Putnam telling a customer they'd do their best to give them better sales terms if the customer left a five star review. (Yelp's guidelines: "Businesses should never ask customers to write reviews.") There are a lot of Subaru dealers in the Bay Area. Other dealers will treat you better and give you a better price. Don't go to this one. (* I don't know whether the rep is at fault here or if it's all Marc, so I'm not naming the rep.) read more

Most of the staff there at Mazda was very friendly also except for this one salesman there that turned us off with his threatening remarks stating "if his life depended on it he would rather be in a Mazda rather than a Subaru."That was a turn off. Second, my wife and I were glad that we gave Putnam Subaru a chance to compete with our business. I have bought and leased cars from regular and luxury car dealers around the Bay Area, and aside from the no-negotiation Costco Auto buying program and Tesla's full online purchasing model, I have never experienced a sales person who respected my opinions and took the time to listen. Perhaps CV-19 played a part in minimizing interactions and expediting the process, but from emails to texts to the in-person test-drive and final paperwork (including Finance - shocker!), it was a comparatively low stress process which resulted in a mutually agreed upon deal that made sense for Dominic, Putnam and myself. In truth, I netted out better than competing dealers, including one participating in the Costco Auto Buyer Program. As a side note, in my experience, it's actually rare to work with a salesperson who actually has spent their own money to own and drive the brand of car they sell. Loving my BRZ! read more

This review is for both Putnam and Miguel specifically. I've leased three cars from Miguel. The first two cars earned him 5 star reviews - I felt he was honest, a good communicator and genuine. My more recent experiences have been quite bleak - hense the one star. On the third deal, a WRX i felt ripped off. I paid the imaginary 'Bay Area rate' and it wasn't until I took the car home that I realized I paid more than MRSP for a pretty shitty car. I was excited to be getting behind the wheel of a WRX so wasn't a very smart shopper, so I accept responsibility for this one...and while I was annoyed with Miguel for taking advantage of the situation and not being as transparent as I thought he should've been - I didn't think much of it. It's also important for me to point out that I also referred several friends to the same sales rep at Putnam where they both bought cars. Since my lease is coming up I was reached out to by their sale-man to get me into a new car. When I pointed out I wanted a better deal this time because I paid too much for the most recent lease - I was met with 'they are going for double what you paid' Which I know is an outright lie. I am 100% certain no one has paid 78 000 dollars for a WRX...I can't stand when salespeople tell out right lies. It's one thing to stretch the truth - but this is just a blatant lie - what else are they not telling the truth about? They were not helpful at all in meeting my needs, they reached out to me and when I wasn't excited about the bleak deal he proposed I got ghosted! Who does that!? I understand at present the car market is a little wild, and it may seem like a good idea to milk existing customers for every dollar (because you can..) but this won't last forever and when things calm down, I won't be returning to Putnam - I'll go to one of the other 20 Bay area Subaru dealers! After having tough times with other places trying to diagnose my parasitic battery drain, they took all day to test and verify (something other places just didn't have the patience to do) and found the root cause to be the DCM module https://youtu.be/jFBpTwGk67c . I wound up replacing mine (the youtuber says it's fine to remove the fuse if you don't use starlink). Even though it was an investment, I was glad to do it. The weather was grey and overcast. My husband and I dragged our 2.5 year old toddler to visit some dealerships, and Putnam Subaru was our third stop on the row. We hadn't test drove anything or even sat down at the other dealerships until we walked in here. Miguel immediately greeted both of us equally and asked us what we were looking for. My husband gestured to me first and I advised that we were looking for a 3 year lease and gave a strict budget, then I passed the inquiry back to my husband for the rest of the details, as he would be the main driver (I can drive anything). Miguel showed us a few cars until we made our way to an Outback towards the back of the lot. We opted to have my husband test drive while I chill in the dealership office with the toddler-monster for milk and snacks. I got seated me at a desk in the far back next to large windows where I can see the car, the lot, and my husband pulling away. Miguel brought me water and crayons and paper for my son. He checked back with me repeatedly to see if I needed anything and also to ask questions about where we stand in our car shopping journey. He also asked me a couple more times if I wanted to switch out with my husband on test driving, which made me feel like he was treating me as an equal to my husband (sorry to repeat the equality thing, but I have had some REAL BAD experiences car shopping before). I declined, because seriously I can and will drive anything, from a mini cooper to a minivan. My husband is the picky one. Hubby came back with some positive feedback, and Miguel had actually started on the paperwork and numbers already since I had advised that we are set on driving away with something today (our current lease expiry was looming and we were feeling the pressure), and I knew that my husband was eyeing the Outback before we left the house. The way Miguel works really cuts down on the usual HOURS it takes to get a new car. At first with the mark ups the numbers were WAY above what I was looking for, but Miguel went back and forth multiple times to bring it down, PLUS they took our other lease off our hands and took care of it for us, and used the payout as a trade in. We still ended up a little over our budget but definitely within our means. Miguel had our car detailed while we did the paperwork, and parked both of the cars next to each other by the financing office, so that I could make the down payment while hubby moved all of our stuff from the old car into the new car.
