They have the trendy fried chicken, but their sundubu (silky tofu stew/soup), dolsot bibimbap (stone pot rice), and other staple classic dishes keeps me coming back. Sundubu is perfect for a light meal if you order the vegetarian or oyster one; heartier if you order the beef/seafood combo. Served with delicious and authentic banchan (side dishes - different ones on rotation) - all of them tasty and appetizing! Most of the banchan is fermented (kimchi; and the young radish greens kimchi were yummy) and this great for the digestion. The flatfish/sole is a bit pricy at $35 but worth the splurge as they give you 2, and it is perfectly crisp and seasoned but with a just-cooked tender filet within; the dolsot bibimbap is literally perfect - crisped rice in the stone pot (not burned!), perfectly seasoned beef, veggies, over easy fried egg - make sure to add a lot of the sweet/spicy chili fermented soybean paste (gochujang) to taste, mix well, and you'll be in heaven. What's rare about this place is the service - been here twice and both times the service has been warm, friendly and genuinely kind! Stumbled upon this place because apparently many restaurant in Berkeley area closes at 8pm. This restaurant is located in a building on University Avenue and I liked how it got high ceilings and wooden decorations that made the place felt homey, and the positioning of the tables made the place felt not stuffed like most Korean restaurants (if you know what I mean). However, the food here was not really to my liking as most tasted sweet rather than savory. The kimchi tofu soup was on the sweeter side, although it got good amount of beef and tofu. The banchans were also on the sweet side. But my friend and I quite enjoyed the bibimbap especially with the stone bowl since it made the rice on the bottom crispy. You could select your type of chicken (fried chicken, yang num, or soy garlic) and your choice of bulgogi, spicy pork, or BbQ chicken. I had the yang num chicken and spicy pork. It was delicious! It also came with a side of banchan. All together it cost $27.31. Pros: -quick service. My order was ready when I arrived and was still warm -food is good! -covid measures are in place so you don't enter the restaurant (hand sanitizer was available) Cons: -it was tricky to find parking in the evening but I eventually got a spot Originally I thought that this place was a bit pricey but the portion size was great and the food was good. when looking for a great korean spot to take the homies on a lazy "i don't feel like going all the way to oakland for korean food" weekend, pyeong chang tofu in west berkeley hits the spot. technically, it is within walking distance from uc berkeley, but be prepared to walk a good 30 minutes like i did if choosing this method of transportation. for those of us who are a bit lazier (or smarter), take the 51b or 36 bus and save yourself the hassle. the restaurant itself is a pretty no-frills, traditional korean restaurant, but trust me! the food is on-point! from bibimbap to bossam, pyeong chang tofu will scratch that itch for korean food and leave you wanting more. oh, and did i mention their banchan (side dishes) are actually incredible? tbh i think their kimchi might actually be the *best* in all of berkeley. ok food review time: s-tier: banchan: pyeong chang tofu serves 4 side dishes with each other (one of the best varieties of banchan at any korean place here in berkeley), and they normally change their banchan on a daily(?) basis. the two constants are the kimchi and braised potatoes, and the other two may vary from braised eggplants to fish cakes. the highlight here is definitely their kimchi, which is super fresh and crisp, while still being packed with flavor. (note: they also sell their kimchi to take home!!) bossam: pyeong chang tofu's bossam is perfectly cooked. the pork belly is just the right amount of chewy, fatty, and meaty, and it pairs perfectly with the crisp kimchi and spicy jalapeño that it's served with! seafood pancake: i absolutely love seafood pancake in general, pyeong chang tofu's is up there as one of my favorites. their pancake is really crispy and tasty! a-tier: dolsot kimchi bibimbap: pyeong chang tofu serves some very solid bibimbap, and while i can't say it's the best, i do think it's better than most of the other korean spots near campus. Selected this place after reading the great reviews and based on that my expectations were high. My experience was very disappointing. The banchan was about half what I typically get at other Korean restaurants, only 4 items. The pancake was doughy with super chewy (overdone) squid and I barely recall any other seafood items in the mix, maybe a few other pieces. The ingredients in the bibimbap lacked flavor and it needed more rice. The complimentary tofu soup was ordered mild but was far too spicy. Was hoping for some yoju but didn't see it on the menu. Came here for dinner yesterday because it was raining so I craved some soup. We were seated immediately and service was very fast. We ordered the galbi tang and mushroom tofu soup. I was a bit disappointed by the galbi tang because the taste of the broth wasn't very good. It was mainly just napa cabbage with a few chunks of meat so I felt underwhelmed. The tofu soup was better though. And they also gave us a side of crispy rice which was fun to eat. For me the real standout was the side dishes. I haven't eaten Korean food in Berkeley. This was my first time here and the food was delicious. We ordered a bunch of fried chicken from original to chili sauce to garlic ones. They all tasted flavorful according to my friends but the best one that stood out was the garlic chicken. They weren't dry either. I had my bibimbap with chicken which wasn't spicy at all. I love pyeong chang tofu! what makes it different here for me compared to other korean spots: - burnt crispy rice hot stone pot: let your rice sit in here, then take your crispy rice and dip it into your tofu stew. SO good - korean fried chicken was added: don't miss out on the soy garlic! a half order is pretty big, a full order could feed a group (even without sides) - love their rotating banchan - the oyster/fish roe/wakame hot stone pot is one of my favorites. i've never seen that anywhere else. i love the textures. - spicy pork belly is also good. Bonus that it comes with a small tofu stew on the side so you don't have to choose. It is def pricier at about $15-30 per person. When its just me and my partner we usually split the spicy pork belly (comes with a tofu stew) and then the hot stone pot, and make sure to enjoy the banchan. Came here for the high reviews and picturesque menu, but I have a few thoughts. One, the deco resembles a beer house, but the atmosphere doesn't. Not only is it overall too bright, but the tables aren't big enough and the staff doesn't play the part. Two, the service, as previously mentioned, is incredibly lacking. Not only was I given only four side dishes where two were the same and the amounts were small, but when I asked to change I was still not given options. Once people started coming in I noticed other tables received different side dishes. Huh. Three, the portions overall were rather small for the price. The beef soup comes in a tofu soup size bowl. A restaurant with good food and very good service, but parking is harder to find in the area! Pyeong Chang Tofu House is not very busy on Saturday lunchtime when we are there. We are seated without waiting and the foods are ready 10-15 minutes after we ordered the food. The Korean banchan is one of the main reasons I love Korean food. Their banchan is pretty tasty. I like it! I ordered the Short Rib Beef Stew (Galbi Tang). It is very good with lots of short ribs. My family said their Tofu Soups are very good taste too. They have a little parking lot behind the building but is not for the customers. Street parking is a little harder to get. Not bad, not great, definitely ranks the lowest for me personally when it comes to other Korean fried chicken I've tried (for KFC, I prefer Bowl'd and Bonchon), but it seems their tofu is their specialty. 2.5/5 rounded up for good service. Came here on a Friday evening and were seated immediately (table for two). Service was generally quick but I think we also had good table placement. I noticed a table in the corner kept having to get their attention in order to have their orders placed, waters refilled, etc. They serve hot tea but if you just want water it does take a while to get a cup, and they are a bit slow on the refills for both. After we ordered it took less than 10 minutes to get all our dishes, which was impressive, but otherwise no one stopped by our table except to bring us the check. We ordered: - seafood pancake: a bit chewy at times but well-cooked and the seafood wasn't overpowering. ($13) - beef bibimbap that came with tofu stew: deliciously crispy rice at the bottom, a bit lacking in flavor. I generally don't season my food and prefer less salt in what I eat, but I found the beef and vegetables to be rather bland. - garlic fried chicken: not crispy on the outside, but the chicken on the inside was moist. The tofu in the soup that came with our order was really silky and fun to eat, but that's not something I would order on a regular basis. There's a lot of competition and this restaurant just didn't make the cut for me, especially knowing there's a chance I could come back and experience poor service. On the other hand, the side dishes were more bland to my taste and I wish there were more options. The price of this restaurant is also on the higher end, about $26 a person. Decided to give this place a try on a Saturday evening. I called ahead to check that the vegetable and tofu soup were truly vegetarian. The waiter who picked up the phone mentioned they were actually vegan. Also if you want to check-in online to reserve a spot, you can do that on yelp. After calling, I saw that there wasn't a wait online so we just decided to drive over. When we arrived, we were seated right away. The waiter was knowledgeable and let us know which dishes can be made vegetarian. Once we put in our order, we had to do a lot of waiting. It took awhile for the banchan to arrive (3 out of 6 dishes were vegetarian). We waited about 45-60 mins for the main dish to arrive. The rice comes in a large stone pot and the waiter distributes it among us in small bowls. There are 2 options for the rice left in the stone pot: 1. You can either add hot tea or 2. Scrape all the crispy rice and eat it. We opted to get hot tea since I haven't tried it before. The tea was a little bland and not very strong. We ordered the vegetarian and mushroom tofu soup. The spicy setting was good and not too spicy to eat. The vegetarian soup comes with seaweed flakes that give the soup an salty/ocean taste. I enjoyed the mushroom soup a bit more. Overall waiter service was friendly and quick. Food service speed could be improved, but at least food came out hot. FINALLY I get to try this place out! I came today, a workday, around 11:30am, so my experience may vastly differ from others. I've heard that there can be a 1+hour wait on the weekends, so I'm lucky I just came while taking a lunch break from work! It's super cute from the outside, and I was pleased that the interior was so cute, warm, and welcoming. The waiter who was the only one working immediately seated me, and he was so quick to bring me barley tea and banchan, and bring me my order. I had looked at the menu online before coming (which is the same as the menu in the restaurant, so if you want to save time, I highly recommend checking out the menu online first), so I knew what I wanted. I ordered the Kimchi Bibimbap in a stone bowl (which is $17), and decided to keep the menu in case if I wanted anything else (if you've eaten with me and/or read my other reviews, you'll know I can eat a lot in one sitting LOL!). In addition to the barley tea and the banchan, there was complimentary hot stone tofu soup! You also get to choose the level of spiciness for your soup. I went with medium. It was chilly outside, and I was cold on my way walking here, and I could barely feel my feet as I was walking. This soup really hit the spot and warmed me up from inside. I loved it! I was accidentally brought the Vegetable Bibimbap, which certainly looked delicious! I was starting to dig into it when I realized there was no kimchi anywhere in my bowl. I got the waiter's attention, and he was super quick to apologize and take the bibimbap away. I was thinking, "Oh, it's probably going to take another 10 minutes for them to correct my order." Oh heck, it ended up being UNDER 5 MINUTES for him to bring me a fresh stone bowl of kimchi bibimbap! I was impressed! Definitely 5 star customer service! As I was digging into the bibimbap and enjoying all the vegetables and ESPECIALLY loving how the rice turns perfectly golden brown and crunchy and crispy (my favorite part of enjoying bibimbap, no point of getting bibimbap if it's not in a stone bowl!), I thought of how much I wanted to get the seafood pancake too, even though I know I shouldn't be eating too much. But I thought, "Hey, I walked all the way out here, and I've already been eyeing this place for a few months. When's the next time I'll be back? Eff it, I'll just order Seafood Pancake!" I got the waiter's attention again, and he quickly brought that out too. This came out piping hot and fresh! I like to see how various Korean restaurants prepare their seafood pancakes. Some places have it thicker and cut in squares, some have it thinner and cut in triangular slices. The seafood pancake here is the latter version. The funny thing was that when deciding to come eat here, I was also trying to decide if I wanted Korean food or pizza for lunch. The seafood pancake certainly hit the spot with my pizza cravings, and the great thing is that it's a healthier alternative! Heck, the waiter even asked if I needed a take out box. I was like, "Nope! Everything is so delicious, I'm eating it all right here!" Great portions, absolutely filling! I walked back to work stuffed! It wasn't cheap--with tip, I paid about $38 (LOL I can't believe I spent so much on lunch AND ate all that in one sitting, this was about as much as a breakfast at Wicked Spoon in Vegas). This tofu house is closer to what I expect from a tofu house. I came here right when it opened and was seated right away. They have quite a selection on their menu so you are not confined to just tofu soup. Nonetheless, I went with the mushroom tofu soup. Generally this is a vegetarian option, but they put beef in it (you can opt out of this if you are vegetarian) but I welcomed the protein. Pick your spice level between mild, medium, spicy, and extra spicy. I got mine at spicy and it was enough to clear my sinuses. The soup came out hot, not bubbling hot, but hot enough. They give you an egg on the side to crack in if you want it. The rice is in a hot stone pot, which is how it should be. They scoop the rice out for you and then take the bowl to carve out the crispy rice. I was really impressed by their ability to get all of the crispy rice out in scoop. I'm used to pouring tea into the rice, but it was nice to munch on the crispy bits. I'm sure they'd let you do the traditional way of pouring the tea in if you asked. The tofu soup itself was flavorful and there were plenty of pieces of beef and mushroom. No skimping here. Overall, I really enjoyed this comforting soup on a chilly day. The banchan selection was pretty decent, and most of it tasted fresh as well! Service was good - we were checked up on frequently and our teas were refilled. Ordered a kimchi pancake, hot stone beef bibimbap, and a beef soondubu. The kimchi pancake was unlike anything I've had before. Usually, kimchi pancake is crispy as it first comes out, and then get soggy over time. Pyeong Chang Tofu's kimchi pancake comes out super crispy, and by the end of our meal, still retained the crispy bite without losing any of the moisture inside. As always, side dishes are all amazing and my favorite dishes include the kimchi pancake, young radish bibimbop, budae jjigae, and tofu soups. Even if they dropped their prices 50%, I would still choose Bowl'd on Solano over Pyeong Chang Tofu. We went for dinner and ordered the Seafood Pancake and Kim Chi Bi Bim Bap with tofu. They give you only 4 banchan (Bowl'd gives many more) and charge you if you want more of any (Bowl'd does not). Banchan portions were larger, though, and I loved 2 of them and my companion loved 3. That was the only thing we liked. Seafood pancake was thick with a rubbery texture. There were no mussels at all in it (menu says "squid, mussel, and clam"), and the squid and clam were overcooked and rubbery. The Bi Bim Bap bowl was half the size that Bowl'd serves at 1.6 times the price. Had no flavor whatsoever. And we asked for the stone bowl, but the rice never got crisp; I guess the bowl wasn't hot enough. Never going back. read more

Please read as 4.49. A couple of months ago the Chronicle had a long article about Korean food, one of their "Best of..." series. As I was reading it I was intrigued by the mention of galbi tang, the spare rib soup. It's described as comfort food and not spicy hot. The places they mentioned were in the South Bay so I decided to research whether Pyeong Chang Tofu on University had it and they did. I have driven by the restaurant many times after picking up my order at Three Stone Hearth and was curious about it already. I suggested to Nina that we meet here for lunch today and after I assured her that they had other dishes than tofu, she was willing to give it a try. For a change I was at the restaurant first and found a parking space right in front. I went in, was greeted and told to seat myself, which I did in the second room. The first room didn't have any tables and chairs that I noticed, so it may be mostly for takeout. I knew what I wanted, so when Nina arrived I encouraged her to look over the menu. It was hot today, about 89°, but the restaurant was comfortably air conditioned. Nina decided on the dolsot bibimbop, which we often have at Bowl'd. We were brought a carafe of iced water, which was most welcome, and then 4 banchan, generous servings of contrasting tastes and textures. Eventually we were brought our mains, both steaming hot. Nina's had something we'd never seen before, a separate bowl w/ an inverted rice crust, usually one of the prized parts of the dolsot bibimbop. My galbi tang was full of vegetables like cabbage and onion and chunks of short rib. While our food cooled down we ate the banchan, which were then refilled. There were chunks of potatoes, which I had never seen before, kimchi, a lovely dish of sliced eggplant and a seaweed salad that was slightly sweet. Nina's dish also came w/ a silky tofu soup. I tasted it and it was lovely. My galbi tang was delicious and I finished it, although I'm not sure I would have it again as I have had the dolsot bibimbop. Nina finished her dish too, although she didn't enjoy it as much as she does the one at Bowl'd. There is one gender neutral bathroom which is attractively tiled and spotlessly clean. Service was friendly and helpful. I thought prices were on the high side. For example, meat dishes were in the $40-50 range. My galbi tang was about $26. It was a good lunch and served as the main meal of the day, as I ate a small dinner tonight. read more

Much of the food was disappointing. For example, I ordered Tofu Stew with Oysters, plus an egg. When it came, the dish was 75% cut up onions... I don't happen to like onion and that ingredient was not mentioned on the menu... plus a handful of the tiniest (overcooked) oysters I have ever seen, some tofu, and NO egg. Still, the broth was hot and tasty, so I didn't make a fuss. Turned out other folks had somewhat similar mediocre experiences. The service was sort of dismissive, like how they tried to rush us to leave toward the end. I asked (several times) for hot water rather than whatever passes for tea there, but they kept bringing me cups of tea instead. What a great find!! Where we live there's not much Korean food! Pyeong Chang Tofu did not disappoint! It's a family restaurant which we love! Peter our server -super friendly and super efficient! I love bibimbap and their stone pot one was super yummy! Their appetizers - banchen was great too! Super yummy kimchi and eggplant. I asked for mild and they were spot on! finally tried out this location a few days ago, as good as the oakland location and the dining area is much bigger! service was attentive and good, food was really the same as the oakland location but i really enjoyed the spicy chicken bibimbop which oakland menu does not have. we will be back again soon! read more
