Kimchi Bibimbap and Original Tofu Soup
    Erica D.

The sign on the building says "Korean Comfort Food" and it was. Peter helped me choose between varied menu items. The original soup with tofu was rich and flavorful with a generous serving of pillowy soft tofu. The kimchi was the star of the meal with an appetizer of kimchi and cooked seasonal veggies arriving before my entree. Fantastic flavors, fresh ingredients, so many vegetarian options and great atmosphere. I will be back to try more dishes, including the bulgogi and to buy more kimchi to go. https://www.kqed.org/checkplease/23753/check-please-bay-area-reviews-fox-tale-fermentation-project-the-bywater-pyeong-chang-tofu-house

Solid Korean restaurant with locations in Berkeley and Oakland! This Berkeley location is decently spacious with fast service. We got there at around 7 pm on a weekday and were seated immeadiately as a party of 6. We weren't very hungry so we ordered their Seafood Pancake and Bossam. Their seafood pancake was okay. It reminded me more of a scallion pancake due to it being quite thin and not having much seafood in it. Their bossam was pretty good. It came with kimchi, tofu soup, and crispy rice! I like these additions a lot and it left us all feeling satisfied. I feel like the pork belly itself was not super outstanding, but solid among the restaurants in Berkeley! I'd recommend this restaurant to those looking for a nice Korean spot in Berkeley. I'd also love to come back to try more of their dishes, especially those with their kimchi or crispy rice!

Pyeong Chang Tofu has a welcoming environment with plenty of indoor seating. You are greeted right away when you walk in and you can place an order within minutes. As a group of 2, we decided to share the kimchi pancake appetizer that came with kimchi and various banchan. The pancake was delicious, savory, cheesy and a great addition with the dipping sauce. I also appreciated the kimchi that paired nicely together with the pancake. For the main, I ordered the spicy chicken bibimbap. Here, you can adjust your spice tolerance to preference - my tolerance is high but I decided to go for the medium level. The bibimbap came out in a hot and sizzling dish so just be careful if you're sensitive to hot foods! After waiting for it to cool down a bit, I mixed the layers around and was happy to get the crunchy rice at the bottom of the dish. The chicken was a good balance of spicy but not too overpowering. Depending on the preparation, you might be used to having bibimbap with sauce that you mix in, but this variation already has everything combined within the pot. It also comes with a small side of tofu soup, which was piping hot but so worth it as it was spicy and comforting. I really enjoyed all of the bold flavors with each dish and I'm excited to come back again to try something new!

I was craving some Korean tofu soup and decided to try this place. I had their combination tofu soup which came with beef, squid, clam and shrimp. It also came with a bowl of rice. The flavor was alright but nothing memorable. All I could remember was that when we were there, a party of around 6 people talking extremely loud which made our dining experience miserable and unpleasant. We ended up eating as quickly as possible so we could get out of here.

I came to have an early dinner with a friend last week. I'd only had Korean food a couple of other times (this might signal my enthusiasm for the cuisine) and was so disappointed it was erased from my memory. This one will stick for sure! We had original fried chicken and soy sauce with garlic. I personally liked the original the best - it came out hot and crispy but not so hot it burns your tongue :) The best parts were the pickled daikon and the excellent service! Everyone was so nice and on top of things, the staff noticed how much I loved the daikon and kept bringing more. I went to an upscale KBBQ place last night and after having dined at Pyeong Chang, I was sorely disappointed by the other place! Pyeong Chang takes the cake so far! The daikon here packs strong pickled punch!! F and I ended up playing chopstick wars over them because we both loved them so much! Looking forward to trying all their yummy appetizers!

Unique menu with lots of different options (options like soy milk soba noodles which u don't see too often) Also so many vegetarian / vegan options, and our waiter was well versed on what was veggie friendly which I appreciated. I picked the stone tofu bibimbap (+$1 for the hot stone, but the crispy rice is worth it!) and asked for no egg. They put fried tofu on it along with various veggies, like bean sprouts and carrots. The dish also came with vegan soft tofu soup, and you could choose the spice level. The tea was complimentary and had a great earthy flavor. Banchan was also delicious and vegan except for the kimchi which had fish sauce. We found free parking on University after 6 pm, and made reservations, but not too busy on summer weekdays in the evening since most of the Cal students are gone. Very pretty and clean interior with to-go boxes you could grab yourself, no need to wait for the waiter! Gratuity is automatically added for parties more than 5.

Deeeelicious! We came in around 7pm on a Wednesday night and did not have to wait long before getting seated. It was warm and cozy inside. I ordered the kong guksu because I love all things soy and it did not disappoint! It comes with salt on the side for you to add and adjust to your liking. The broth was nutty, thick and overall delicious. My boyfriend got a seafood tofu soup that came with an egg and crispy rice! The rice was a fun little bonus we weren't expecting! Our server (seemed like the owner perhaps) had great customer service so it was we left with a full belly and smiles on our faces!

This Korean restaurant is a cozy spot that serves delicious kitchen-cooked dishes, no BBQ grills at the table. I like this because I can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the food without any hassle of cooking myself. Plus, it means I won't have to worry about leaving the restaurant smelling smoky and BBQ-y. Parking was fairly easy to find on the street. The food was very good! We tried the original and shoyu chicken wings, and the latter was our favorite. The bulgogi and the soft tofu soup were also really tasty. They have a good selection of bonchons. The only thing that could be improved is the service. It was a bit hard to get the server's attention, and when they did come over, they seemed a bit hostile. It was a bit off-putting, but overall, it was still a good dining experience.

They both had a nice comforting vibe to each dish that I really liked. Their cold noodles and rose tteokbokki were not bad either, but I personally didn't find them to be too memorable. They have a cute patio in the back that we didn't get to sit at, but I heard is very cute. I'd love to come back to try their lunch sets as well! The interior is calm with great use of wood colours, the outdoor patio is brilliantly shaded by trees, providing a little secret treehouse vibe like in Pokemon ruby. Outside was pretty popping though so I sat inside and ordered the bulgogi comfort stew. This thing was stuffed to the brim. From the description it's easy to feel like it's going to be a pretty boring dish, but it was far from. The broth was definitely comforting, I didn't care about anything after the first taste. There were different varieties of mushrooms inside providing adequate texture variation and the beef portion was generous! Usually I find myself hoarding meat in these stews to make sure I get good bites but the dish deceptively had a great amount such that I could eat a solo meat bite and still have enough! The banchan was also very flavourful. I ended up stuffed in this little hideaway, surrounded by the supermarket portion of this establishment and the calming hiphop lofi, if I was heading straight back home I would have grabbed a few things. It was hard to fault this place. Throw back to my stomach rumbling, before I left I used the restroom in the front and unfortunately the cosy hideaway, clean aesthetic seems to end at the little corridor. The bathroom was not dirty but it was not as clean as expected. Service was great and the food tasted amazing, I'd definitely come back to try other dishes

I was violently craving seolleongtang and did some research to find a spot in Oakland. The menu is pretty big with a lot of enticing options--I love bossam and blood sausage--but because I had tunnel vision, I stuck with the soup. The broth itself was good, and they had salt and pepper on the table so you could season it to your liking. Unfortunately, the noodles were way too soft and almost mushy, and the meat was extremely tough and hard to chew. I couldn't finish it. If seolleongtang is one of your favorite dishes, I'd probably skip it here. My husband got the kimchi fried rice, which was huge and great for sharing between 2-4 people. Based on the portion size, I do think it could use an extra egg, more Spam and some nori on top. It leaned more oily and buttery than other versions I've had, but it was still good--just nothing too special. The vibe and service were solid, so I'd come back to try other dishes and update my rating accordingly.

The hostess was welcoming, and the staff who brought out our food were friendly. Unfortunately, our server provided a very different experience. When we asked for appetizer recommendations, he simply repeated the menu items without offering any suggestions. Throughout the meal, he never checked on our table, even though we noticed him checking on the surrounding tables several times. At one point, the patio umbrella unexpectedly fell near our table. Instead of first asking if everyone was okay, his only response was, "Do you mind if I close the umbrella?" That was disappointing and made us feel overlooked. The only time his attitude became noticeably friendlier was when he brought the check. We happened to be the only Asian table that afternoon. While I can't say for certain why our experience felt different, the contrast in service left us feeling unwelcome. I hope every customer receives the same level of care and attention.

The sauce it was paired with was the wow factor and we even asked for more. The bulgogi on both the bulgogi bowl and bulgogi scramble was tender and had a tasty marinade. I would had wished the bulgogi scramble didn't have as much red onion. I was surprised with the sweet potato tots option and that didn't disappoint. The spicy pork sandwich was elevated and balanced out with the kimchi slaw and cucumber combo. We finished with the Crunch French toast and it was perfection! Fluffy inside but a crunchy outside.
