A hidden gem in SoMa! I visited Que Viet to satisfy my craving for pho. Conveniently, this place is located right off the 4th & Brennan MUNI station. We arrived as a party of 2 around 7 PM on a Saturday and were immediately seated without a reservation. However, within just 15-20 minutes, the place filled up quickly with more guests arriving. If you are on a tight schedule or in a hurry, I would recommend making a reservation or avoiding peak hours. The ambiance inside is very cozy with woody accents. The servers were very kind and service was fast, though it did get a little harder to flag someone down toward the end of our visit as the place got full and there were only 3 hall staff. Their shrimp spring rolls were perfectly made and come with avocado, which I loved, and the peanut dipping sauce is some of the best I've had. I love Asian fusion when it's done well (throwback: does anyone remember The House on Grant Ave?), but the dishes just tasted like Americanized Vietnamese food, and not in a good way. They're not really "bad," just forgettable. I DO appreciate the care they put into packaging up the dishes though. This is based on one experience (and not even a dine-in), so maybe it was a one-off. The dish came with two sauces, one the standard fish sauce but the other was a super pungent delightfully fishy concoction. I wasn't sure I completely loved it but it did add some zing! Thankfully both sauces were well wrapped and didn't leak. The rice wrappers required a soak in a plate of water and were accompanied by a nice mix of herbs. There was enough of all ingredients if you doled it out correctly. Pickup was easy and quicker than the estimate. The servers seemed polite, and it looked like a decent place to sit down if you're so inclined. Parked a couple alleys up as there's nowhere to stop on 4th St. I'll definitely be back to try some of the other meat combos with the woven vermicelli, which was very fine and soft. Que Viet is located in a semi-busy area. Parking is street parking, so it may be hit or miss (may be metered). Exterior is simple - blends in a bit, so it may be easily missed. Interior is a bit modern compared to your typical pho spot. Not that spacious, at least between some of the tables - felt like we were right next to the other table. Decent service - not the best, but not the worse either - probably because it was a slow and quiet weekend. My family all got a variety of appetizers and pho, while I got something different - one of their Grilled Specialty (the ribeye steak with vermicelli). My cousin and I also ordered a Thai tea. My family got their food first, while mine took an extra at least 15 minutes after their food arrived, so they shared their food with me. We thought the appetizers and food were decent, but definitely not worth the price point, but it is the city, so it makes sense.
