Marvelous, delicious and entertaining, but our afternoon tea experience was marred by other patrons who thought it was okay to bring a child who was actively coughing. One of my girlfriends and I went here to celebrate our birthdays - it was OK. The service was really nice - the young, college-age lady that was our server was just darling! Very kind and sweet. First things first: I LOVE high tea. Really really love it. It's usually an activity I seek out whilst vacationing in another city, and the experience is elegant, relaxing and enjoyable. That said: Queen Mary's is a place strictly for kids and old ladies. It's a teeny tiny house crammed with tables, chair and frill. Any space not reserved for dining has been crammed with retail merchandise and over-decorated in nauseating floral chintz. It's overwhelming. Pricepoint is $31.00 / adult and $36.00 / adult if you add a glass of bubbly (which we did). Nice selection of tea, however, not much in the way of decaf tea and after four cups of Ceylon I was buzzing on the caffeine (ha ha!) Also, HUGE de-merit for the sugar. It's rainbow confetti sugar. Sorry - I do not want to put blue and pink sugar crystals in my tea! No other sugar substitute was offered, either. The savories, sandwiches and mini-desserts were standard and boring, not super fresh. However, the fresh fruit was lovely: pears, tart apple, strawberries, raspberries, melon, peach and blueberries! Also, there was an apple-date bread that was very nice with a dab of fresh butter. Not fabulous...but not awful. However, I wouldn't return. The BEST part? You get to wear a huge, sparkly tiara. Since our trip coincided with two of our birthdays, a friend sweetly planned afternoon tea for us While in the car the day before our reservations, she received a phone call addressing her as the birthday princess party of some sort. HOW ADORABLE! Upon arrival, they had a table ready with two tiara's for both of us! This REALLY is a Princess Party! :) They brought a tea sample for us to have while we perused the menu. We ended up getting afternoon tea for three and each chose our own tea. I always pick English Breakfast :) and theirs was so yummy! Their tiers are filled to the very top with all sorts of sandwiches and treats! Their top layer of breads/scones/cakes give you a variety of about SIX, the bottom tier allows each girl three different sandwiches, and the middle tier being the most amazing was filled with treats and fruit! It was colorful and definitely a hearty treat that I really appreciated. Some tea places definitely skimp and don't provide such a variety, I definitely loved what they offered here. We had great service and they even added birthday candles into our tiers so we could blow them out before we ate. Such sweet little details made for an adorable afternoon! Their menu offers more than fare for afternoon tea, but also includes one of my favorites: English pasties! Mmmm! The only thing that surprised me was when they served us whipped cream to have with our treats instead of clotted/devonshire cream. At the end, we were able to walk around their waiting area that is filled with teapots/cups/accessories. They pull out all the stops. PROS: 1. Decor and design. Floral wallpaper. Floral drapes. Silver teapots. Silver trays. Frumpy floral aprons that the waitresses wear. Colored sugar crystals. Gaudy knick knacks lining the walls. Even the bathroom sink faucet is old-fashioned with individual porcelain hot and cold faucet handles. Two doves on display in a corner glass cage. I felt like I was in some grandma's house in London. 2. Variety of tea. There were so many options! Black teas. White teas. Red teas. Fruity teas. Creamy teas. The menu was organized by tea and each one had so many flavors. The descriptions beneath each one were so detailed and made it hard to pick one. I had the almond cream it smelled and tasted divine. 3. Cute little tea steep timer. Instead of one hourglass, there were three side by side with different colored sand indicating 1min, 3 min, or 5 minutes. 4. Amazing entrees. I had the veggie omelette and my friend had the french toast. Our meals came with a huge mountain of random fruit that weren't even in season! There were slices of apples, oranges, mandarins, cantaloupe, honey dew melon, kiwis, pineapple, and blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, grapes...seriously. So much fruit! And it was so fresh and ripe. Nothing canned. Nothing overripe and squishy. Nothing browned like it had been sitting out all day. 5. Amazing dessert. We shared the coconut cream pie. Perfect. Nuff said. 6. Free "shots" of tea (samples) throughout your stay to try new flavors. If you're looking for a local, authentic, English high tea experience, this is the place to go. I am a fan. A huge gigantic tea crazed fan! A dear friend of mine that I only see a few times a year suggested we have tea together. This sounded fun! We met at the Queen Mary and boy did it not disappoint. From the decor to the sprinkles in the sugar, it set the tone for what was about to come... the tower of treats! Good lord, every small morsel was so delicious and fun that we found ourselves wanting more of everything but by the time we ate all three plates, we were full and realized.. we'd just have to come back! It's a nice looking place. Pretty easy to find and the parking isn't bad. I went on Mother's Day. I didn't expect to sit, but I wanted to look around since the sold tea and other items. Customer service is lacking. The person who greeted us was beyond rude. Of course there is frustration if you are trying to accommodate people crammed into a small room. But courtesy and politeness can go further than tea and finger sandwiches. I love afternoon tea and looked forward to making a reservation there in the future. My friend and I took our four daughters here today to celebrate summer birthdays. We adore tea parties, and have been talking about coming here for years. Finally, my friend made a reservation for breakfast and we gave 'er a go. The little girls loved the experience, but I've rocked out a royal tea with better food for cheaper. BOO: Holy Mother of Pearl this place is overpriced! The kids' "afternoon tea" was a pot of tea, a sorbet trio, a cookie, 4 tiny PBJ (or grilled cheese) finger sandwiches, a brownie, a fistful of purple cotton candy, a small plate of fruit, and a tiny saucer of too-sweet chocolate sauce for dipping. TWENTY DOLLARS PER CHILD. That better have been the best effing PBJ my child has ever had. The two-egg scramble was $13.50 and toast (or crumpets or scones) was $3 extra. The quiche was $14.50, and while it was yummy, the portion I got was closer to $10 worth. Maybe all the fruit on the side was $4.50? I get that we are paying partially for ambiance but COME ON, Y'ALL. And there are a lot of rules. A LOT. If you make a reservation, each person MUST order a full meal, even if some of those persons are small children who don't eat much. At least Daddy got leftover lunch. My friend and I couldn't just order a pot of tea to share; we each had to order a pot of tea that held about 5 cups worth. You better believe we sat there and drank every last drop! Expect to have warm tea if you order green tea - suppose to be HOT!! 4. The middle tier of the afternoon tea was filled with rotten fruits. Almost perished apples and pears, brown bananas, rotten blueberries and grapes...... VERY GROSS!! And we paid big bucks for all these junk! 5. Today was our third trip to the Queen Mary Tearoom and it was as great as always. We had done the afternoon tea before and decided to order off of the lunch menu this time and all the food was beautifully presented and very tasty. There's something about being served on pretty china plates that takes a chicken salad and makes it special. The choice of teas is almost overwhelming but all three of us ordered a different pot of tea so we could sample several. The servers are friendly and helpful in answering any questions you have about the teas. The space is busy with lots of items on the walls and shelves but I have a thing for kitsch so I like it. Also the bathrooms are really interesting... Small and similarly kitschy. I would definitely recommend making a reservation as the space is small and is always busy when we go. read more

Went for the first time for my birthday. I didn't have a reservation and they got my Mom and I in. My Mother is Vegan, and accommodating her was not a problem. They made the most incredible sandwich for her on marble rye with veggies. Of course the tea was spectacular as was the service. Sophie was a DOLL! I was really blown away by the freshness of the food. The fruit was not frozen, it was fresh...everything looked and tasted like they had literally picked it off the vine that morning. Yes, it's frilly. Yes, it's pricey. But yes, it's worth it. This is one of those places where I take visitors (generally of the female persuasion) when I want to show them something uniquely Seattle. They love it, and I do too. The wait staff was great to us. I went in with a long-time customer, so to those reviewers who said the staff was pushy, perhaps that's why I avoided such an experience. The food is tasty, and I just loved being pampered. My favorite teas are a ginger lime (it may have been seasonal, I never see it there any more), creamy earl grey, and jackfruit. I bring these teas back home with me at Christmas, and everyone always swoons over them. This would have been a four-star review, but I also had a great Queen Mary experience at a friend's wedding. I was a bridesmaid, and the bride had Queen Mary put together some food for us. Everything came on silver trays and was absolutely delicious. Whenever we stopped in our wedding day preparations to snack on the Queen Mary treats, it seemed like we were able to take a breath and more fully enjoy the fun! The gold standard by which I judge all other tea rooms. It's always a joy to have afternoon tea at the Queen Mary; it never disappoints. I grew up in Seattle, was introduced to afternoon tea at the Queen Mary over 15 years ago (I've been at least once a year since), fell in love with the practice, and now go out to tea as much as possible wherever I am. However, I have yet to encounter another tea house I love as much as the Queen Mary. High quality teas (and such variety!), there so many blends of their's that I now count as my favorites. The food for afternoon tea is a delight; there's so many little morsels to nibble on! From crumpets and scones to other sweet and savory baked goodies, fruit and a selection of sandwiches, it's a wonderfully dainty smorgasbord! And beginning it all with sorbet and a shortbread is such a wonderful touch. The staff always gives great service, the ambiance is fun without being too frilly (more Victorian than English garden), and Mary is often there in full force of cheer and friendliness making everyone feel very welcome. Wonderful, wonderful place! Afternoon tea isn't cheap at $31/pp, but it's something that I always look forward to whenever I visit Seattle. Tea and food were great, was disappointed by service nd the fact they really rushed us out. It boils down to this: awesome place, but the fact that we were rushed out so severely overshadowed every other good thing. We had a reservation for 3 for "afternoon tea" at 10am and were seated on time. The waitress, though, didn't seem like she wanted to spend any time with us. She wasn't interested in talking more than hurriedly explaining the food in a monotone. We were asking about the tea and she kept saying she'd give us a few more minutes when all we really wanted was to ask some questions - but if we didn't know exactly what we wanted exactly when she was there... she would leave. She rushed plates away when we weren't finished, she rushed the check, and she didn't refill water, nor did she check in to see if we wanted anything else. I had to be quick to order another pot of tea... And as we were lingering over a shared 4th pot of tea, she brought us the check and told us we'd need to leave because the next party was there. There were other tables available the big group - which was not even complete when they ushered us out - but they didn't have them sit there, nor were we invited to scoot to another table to enjoy the rest of the pot of tea we still had. For an early Valentine date, my girlfriend & I decided we wanted to experience high tea together so we made reservations. I would recommend reserving a table because the place is a little small & people tend to stay over an hour on average. When we arrived, we were greeted with warm welcomes and were seated almost instantly. It was our first time & the server who helped us was able to go down the list of all the amazing variety of teas explaining each one. Words cannot describe how adorable this little tea shop is. I came here for afternoon tea with a friend and we were both treated like princesses. The tower of treats were very generous and delicious, to the point that we couldn't finish them! They had a great tea selection as well. Will definitely be back again, also to try their other food as well. The only complaint I had was that it was a bit dusty inside. My allergies started to kick in after about 10 min. A friend has raved about this place, so when she picked it for a brunch date, I was excited to go. Different strokes for different folks. This place was really pretty, but WAY too small and cramped. The tables are too close together. Since this place is a popular spot for groups, I'm surprised they dedicate so much space to their retail section. I enjoyed the pear toffee French toast. I would've enjoyed the Sugar Plum Fairy tea more if we had been able to share a teapot. Apparently this is not allowed. We each had to get our own. By the time we left, we had the caffeine shakes. Also, the server wasn't very attentive. I had to ask for a glass of water more than once. And it never came. Guy review: heads up. I was there for my wife's birthday tea party with family. It was actually very cool. The place is packed to the brim with STUFF. Everything is served to you in tiny cups on tiny plates or on little multi-tier racks. It feels like you're in Alice in Wonderland, but the cute kind and not the creepy Tim Burton kind. Our waitress (or whatever you call tea serving people) was very friendly and patient in the face of complicated food restrictions and confused tea-noobs. I ordered the afternoon tea combo (probably a classier name for it). It should really be called "mountain of pastries and sandwiches" because that's what it actually is. And it is awesome. There was a flaky pork roll and a scone and some gingerbread with frosting and all kinds of other stuff. You get a bunch of little marmalade and whipped cream and butter things, all of which I inappropriately slathered on everything else for delicious results. When you're faced with the intimidating list of teas, the solution is simple. Go to the front counter and sniff all the little sample tins. Order the one that smells best. (Spoiler alert) Which is the coconut baozhong tea. The bathrooms are super small and also interesting. I'd recommend you go unless you're morbidly obese, in which case you won't fit. In the men's bathroom there is a little letter to guys that explains that you're still a manly man even though you're at a tea room. Nice touch. read more

My wife and I were OH SO not in the mood to have a party at home, so we called Queen Mary, because we had heard great things from other parents, and frankly, from our daughters friends. Their eyes would light up when you mentioned QM. It really is a unique place. Its an intimate space, decorated in a sort of neo-victorian style. Lots of tea pots and whimsy (yeah, you heard me, whimsy. *grunts and picks teeth with hunting knife*). They even have a pair of doves. For adults, there is a standard menu, with lots of tasty UK inspired dishes. For the kids there is a standard 'tea service' that includes tea, tasty treats, fruit and a light meal. Each kid is given their own little stacked serving tray with treats. It really is 'magical'. The staff were GREAT. Seriously. Friendly and attentive, they managed to capture the attention of a horde of 9 year old girls, and keep the party moving. Top notch. read more

Overall, my friend and I thought it was good but not good enough to pick again over the usual haunts. Pros: * understand vegetarian and adjust the included treats accordingly * offer high tea all week, not just on weekends * food portions were very generous -- more than we could eat * sorbet, quiches, scones with clotted cream were very tasty * tea choices were extensive, though a bit light on the non-caffeine choices unless you want roiboos. Cons: * tea is served in metal teapots. It was our responsibility to watch the timer,open the lid, and remove the tea strainer. The metal lid was so hot, we almost burned our fingers. Learned quickly and used cloth napkins afterward. * popular place for b'day parties and little girls. For me, high tea is about paying to indulge in food, tea, and ambiance. This place is loud with kids, and we had to hear happy birthday sung way too many times. Too expensive to feel like we were at Chucky Cheese. * surprisingly, there is a time limit on reserving a table. We lingered too long, so the waitress explained that our time was up and they'd bring us boxes for the remaining food. This is not a full blown restaurant, people, it is what it is and what it is is wonderful, maybe not like you get in England but guess what, you're in Seattle. If you're into tea time, this is the place for you! A friend and I scoped out this spot to see if we wanted to hold her Bridal Shower here and decided to have Sunday brunch. It's an adorable, charming little tea house perfect for a girl's day out. It's quite small and intimate and full of girly decor. Your table comes fully equipped with all the tea accessories you will need for the full tea time experience which is great. For newbies like us, we were a little bit confused with what to do with all the accessories and had to look around to see how others were doing things. You'll find a Queen Mary crowd which takes their tea time very seriously. We saw fancy dressed little girls and equally fancy mothers enjoying their tea time together. That was pretty adorable. The tea room itself also takes itself seriously as you cannot split your pot of tea so for us, we wasted most of our tea. I did enjoy the samples constantly coming around for us to try and thought some of the teas were delicious. Our brunch (we both had the veggie scrambles) was good as well. The fruit which decorated our plates was quite lovely. It's not a cheap place either. You will pay a pretty penny for your tea time experience but that was not surprising. In the end my friend and I realized we were not big tea time people so decided against the venue for her shower, though I can see how others would really enjoy it here. Parking is hard there even though we were lucky today. We ordered two tea and lunch items. Everything was fine and food quality was on par with other restaurants. Price is very reasonable. Only problem was coconut cake was way too dry but glad that the server resolved this problem fast. Seems food needs a bit more butter also for favor. So what is the main issue?? Ambiance!! The entire tea house is very small very crowded and full of merchandise on the walls and shelves!!...What worse is I didn't have any break from seeing all these `buy me buy me' stuff even on my way to the bathroom!! There are tons of pictures and frames inside the ladies room. Why can't I have a break from this?? The silverwares and dishware are very dated and tried to look nice with tons of pattern however just too much floral too much pattern and tried so hard to be `British' that I can't find other word to describe this except `too cheesy'. I recently came here with a close friend of mine who is getting married and fellow bridesmaids just to spend a little time together away from the hustle and bustle of wedding planning and events. First, the waitress was so very sweet and friendly! We all got different teas and breakfast foods and just sampled from each other's! Lol. It was all very flavorful and filling. It's a small place, but it actually quite quaint and cozy. I found it more relaxing and laid back than being in a room filled with a large number of people. This is one of the cutest places I've found in the Seattle area. The owner Mary (thus "Queen Mary Tea Room") is knowledgeable about tea, very friendly and she operates the tea emporium just 100 feet down the street from the restaurant. I went on a Sunday afternoon and unfortunately it was not very crowded at all, so I became the only diner in that place which feels a bit awkward. Yet on the other hand it makes me feel like I am sitting in an English lady's home. =) I love their colorful tea sugar (changes color with the season), and the fancy tea sets. I had the whole afternoon tea menu ($36?) and it came with a little bit of everything. In terms of the quality and quantity, it's not Fortnum & Mason obviously, but the intimate and a bit rustic feel of the decor/china/food/tea menu makes it more enjoyable for a private party. Their savory is good, but the best is the apricot tart (too bad they really do just give you a TINY square of it). I'd say the only room for improvement is that for the price of a double dinner meal somewhere, they should give you either a slightly larger portion on the items or offer a second refill. This is a great place to have a brunch or lunch with your friends and loved ones. It is a very small tea room so I definitely recommend not going there without making reservations first. The food is delicious but I usually order the afternoon tea. I love the decoration and the atmosphere. The service is good but I don't recommend making reservations for big parties during the weekends. read more

A great place to have a classy tea party with friends! Really good for birthdays, too. You get to wear a little tiara if you're the birthday girl. The little sandwiches and other tidbits they give you are fantastic (love love LOVE the quiche and the little cheesy meaty pie things) and their selection of teas is enormous. I used to LOVE this place. By far my favorite tea room in Seattle, but my three most recent experiences have been awful. I've waited to post my review, hoping things would change, but if they've changed it's only for the worse. So, so sad. Strike One: Went in for high tea and got seated RIGHT next to the single occupancy bathroom. What with all the tea being consumed, there was a constant line, resulting in people standing so close to us waiting for the bathroom that they were literally touching us. Afterwards, we talked to them about it and they said to ask for a different table IN ADVANCE next time. Strike Two: Having learned our lesson, we asked for a different table about a month in advance. This was a BIG DEAL tea for my mom's 65th birthday and for mother's day for three of us, which required multiple babysitters and quite a bit of logistical planning. We made sure to let them know WAY in advance that it was a big deal and that the table location was important. They called us the day before to confirm. All good. So we get all ready, drop off kids with sitters, get dolled up, and drive our 30 minutes to get there (we don't live close) and when we arrive, they seat us AT THE BATHROOM TABLE AGAIN. They said it just didn't work as conveniently to seat us at a different table, but didn't feel the need to let us know when they'd called the DAY BEFORE. Unbelievable. Not wanting to spend another special occasion and $$$$ sitting in the middle of the line to the bathroom, we left. Strike Three: Totally put off of the high tea, I went back just to buy some loose leaf tea. Again, having learned my lesson, I checked in advance to make sure they had the tea. Yes. Confirmed they opened at 9. Yes. Schlepped myself and kid for a 60 minute round trip for my tea. Got there, and was told I could only get it in a smaller size in a tin which, at the volume I was buying, was about twice as expensive. I asked if they could just grab what I wanted from the emporium (across the street) since the folks from the emporium were also present at the time I was asking. They said NO, then took their breakfasts from the kitchen, crossed the street to the emporium, and went inside. It would have been NOTHING for them to have just handed me out the pre-bagged tea I had spent an HOUR to come get, but apparently that's how little they care about their customers. read more

Came in recently with my girlfriend and a family member and ordered the high tea that came with a large tower of food, as well a couple different types of teas. The tea was great but the food was just average. Nothing to write home about. The chicken sandwiches were swimming in dijon mustard/mayonnaise? The owner woman also just added a tense presence to the atmosphere. Would smile, then turn around and frown again and even shoot dirty looks towards her employees. We also felt a bid rushed out of our table. We would have liked another half an hour at least. My girlfriend visiting from out of the country bought a tin of tea across the street at the emporium to take home, so at least she was happy about that. read more

As soon as you walk in the door it feels like you're in an English grandmother's house. Lots of pictures on the walls, stuffed animals, dolls, floral china, and trinkets everywhere. My sister and I really enjoyed aternoon tea. It's a little pricey at$30 per person, but its mostly about the experience. Each person chooses their own tea from the menu and then they serve a 3 tired tray full of yummy little snacks and finger sandwiches. The place itself is on the smaller side, so its best to make reservations before going. read more

Amazing, amazing and amazing. It's so cute and dainty here. I freaking love it. The outside is so charming. Their tea... is wow. SO GOOD! I can't wait to come here again. It's sooo sooo fun. Their breakfast is just heaven on earth. I got their french toast. Me and my friend came here for our birthday (we're bday twins, cool huh) and they put a candle in our breakfast. So cute and so kind of them. I am not kidding, I can't wait to come here again! My experience was A+ fantastic. read more
