I rarely have a bad meal here, which is why I'm willing to trek all the way to Elmhurst of all places for Chinese food. There is absolutely nothing pretty about this place, from the neighborhood, to the decor to the waiters. But the food is the star attraction and the chefs are masters at their craft. We always order the fried flounder which is served nice and crisp, where you can even eat the bones of the fish. Its smothered in a soy sauce which gets absorbed into the crispy batter of the fish. Wonderful texture. Some other dishes we order are: The peking style pork chops are some of the best in NY I've had. The house special T- boned steak is served medium rare, wonderful sauce. The fried shrimp with walnuts and salad dressing on the side, for your dunking pleasure. If you're the most adventurous kind, go for the goose feet. Don't worry, it's deboned. They stir fry it with black bean sauce and peppers for a kick. If you're ever in the mood for a good rice casserole. Call in advance and order a rice casserole topped with preserved duck, chinese sausages and veggies. When it's served, you drizzle some soy sauce over the rice and it's the Chinese version of paella with a wonderful crust at the bottom of the pot. read more

Food is a good 4 stars but their service is terrible. Be careful if you don't speak Chinese, they will LIE to you about their prices and try to rip you off. I called in and asked them how much the Peking pork chops and a bowl of white rice. The receptionist said they were $14.95 and $1.50, respectively. He asked if I wanted it, probably implying if I wanted it delivered. I declined and said I'll come and eat-in. Upon arriving, I looked at the menu and saw that the Peking pork chops were $12.95 and a bowl of white rice was $1.00... For a second I thought it could've been a mistake but to get two prices wrong especially on very common and popular dishes seems unlikely. To make matters worse, when I pointed at and ordered the Peking pork chops, the waiter brought me salted pepper pork chops. When I asked where was the "red sauce," he told me that's another dish. I told him to just get me the sauce on the side and that I ordered The Peking version and he just said, "oh..." and walked away. I was the ONLY customer in the restaurant as I went before the dinner rush and was polite throughout my stay. I still tipped above 15% but I won't be returning. It's a shame their service is poor and their business practices are deceitful. read more

Very good quality Cantonese seafood restaurant. The food was really good, the services needs some work though, but then it's pretty much the same every cantonese restaurant you go, the waiters/waitress are older Cantonese men and women and they don't really give you a good altitude if you don't speak their language. They are usually more friendlier to the regulars that goes there. Good food, lousy services. so it's give and take... but I think I will be back for the food... sigh... read more

The service is pretty lame. The waiters were friendly and smiled but it took them forever to take our order!!! We ordered Fried Squid w/ Chili & Spiced Salt ($10.95), Pan Fried Noodles w/ Seafood ($11.95), and House Special Steak ($17.95). Out the three dishes only the calamari was delicious. The noodles were lacking in the seafood (see the photo!) and the steak tasted like breaded fatty steak in sweet and sour sauce. The food here is similar to what you would find in Chinatown in NYC. The soup, snow pea veggies, half chicken, pork, fish, steak was all good. I would have given this place 4 stars, but the only thing I didn't really like was them rushing us out as we were finishing our meal. We got the bill as we were still eating. I've been coming here since I was a little girl and have never been disappointed. This restaurant has been with my family for brithdays, celebrations, graduations, so many things because we love it. We just keep coming back. You know a place is good when the restaurant is in the middle of nowhere and the place gets packed. My favorites that I get everytime are the fried flounder (the best out of all the dishes), the hong kong styled steak, the shrimp and walnut, the house special soup, the friend garlic chicken, and the razor clams. Delicious!! I compare every chinese restaurant that I eat in to this one. I hope this place never closes cause Ill be coming back for years to come. The staff recognizes my dad since we go here a lot. The owner is a bit of a bitch because she likes to persuade you into ordering more food and tries to rush you by giving your check before you finish eating so that she can use ur table to seat more customers but I'm so used to her. We went to have a family dinner it was a party of 6 . Since the moment we got there we were being profiled. I have gone to many restaurants around the neighborhood and I have never been looked at so much and stared at. When we sat down we waited a couple of mins and they didn't give us the menu till we asked for it .. when it came to ordering no one asked if we wanted to drink something so I just said can I have a coke and my husband was trying to figure out what they had to drink as they pointed to refrigerator and then gave us a run down as if we were suppose to know what they had. We order food and as we are eating they are looking at us mainly an older lady not sure if she was the owner or the manager bc she was really wasn't doing anything just looking at us. As we have food in our plates they come and give us the check with oranges and stare at us till we take out the cash. When we give them the cash she comes back with the change and tells us tip is not included. When we were leaving they started asking for tip. Not really sure why this place was lauded as the pinnacle of Cantonese cuisine by other Yelpers. Discarding the hype, it doesn't even come close to being the best Canto restaurant in Queens. To me, and to my girlfriend's Chinese family, it ranked alongside most average Chinese takeouts. If you're looking for a quality eat-in Canto experience, I'd say head elsewhere to Flushing, or to Congee Village in Manhattan (Worth the trip). You'll get a better meal for a comparable price. While the fried squid with chili and special salt was fairly decent here, it was a grade down from Congee Bowery's version, which also comes seasoned with sautéed garlic and peanuts, and which is much more savory in flavor. As for the other dishes we ordered, the snails were a little gritty with an overly salty black bean sauce, and the veggies were tired, limp and pale green. Maybe it was because we came at 5pm, while all the staff was gambling and drinking in the back. Maybe it gets better later when the place is busier, but all in all, just a let down, there's much better meals to be had in the area. Cash only too. read more

This was my first time visiting this establishment and boy am I glad that I did. I went with a group of friends and found the food to be so enchanting and delicious along with washing it down it a bottle Tsingtao beer. I surely will try to visit more often though I am coming from Washington Heights in Manhattan to go to Elmhurst but it is surely worth it for the very authentic and crafted food by the staff here. I was skeptical but I took the advise of my friend who is a frequent visitor and enjoyed my experience fully. The staff was helpful and the environment was relaxing and down to earth. They are usually open till 4am as I was told and that's a very good schedule, then I found out that the reason for this was for the other people in the restaurant industry that get off late from work and maybe want a bite to eat before rolling home to bed at the wee hours of the morning. read more

This place is legit. It's nothing fancy but the food here is what can be defined as genuine Cantonese eats. My family and I have been coming here for years and the fact that this place is as old as I am pretty much says it all! You can't go wrong with any dish here. A few of our favs include the jellyfish and preserved veggie appetizer, 'sizzling chicken platter' served with veggies, scallops and broccoli served in a black pepper sauce, the sweet & sour pork chops, the tofu casserole, and of course, the famous shrimp & broccoli dish served with walnuts. That didn't really bother us. But what upset me tonight was that the lady boss when I gave her the check and the $ for it as she walked by, she literally counted the cash on the table in front of everyone bill by bill, and then have the nerves to make a point of making sure I leave a tip on the table. I then followed her to the register and told her off like hey, don't do that next time. Told her that it's disrespectful. And she's like well next time you pay up here. I'm like, you were walking by, it's not unusual to pay the bill from table. Plus they don't take credit cards thus making this a cash only place. I very rarely leave a bad review. Family style chinese dining. It's good, but Chinatown has a lot of other options for a better meal. For Elmhurst though, this is the go-to place for a family style meal. I wasn't a big fan of the fact that workers (and their buddies) were smoking in the restaurant one night. Not what I would consider sanitary. I'd go back again, but sometimes there's just things that I see there that might make me reconsider. Always come here when I get out of town family visiting and they agree that "High Pearl" is definitely worth the trip (esp since we now live in LI)! We usually get any of the following (depending on size of party): Peking pork chops, snails in black bean sauce, walnut or fresh "white steamed" shrimp (w/ chili soy sauce), crispy or salted chicken, salt and pepper calamari, a tofu casserole pot, and topping off the order with any of the seasonal greens. You really can't go wrong with any of the food here. If you want suggestions for your party, feel free to ask the waiters! (Better if someone speaks Cantonese though.) Food is quick and service efficient. Most of wait staff is decent, but like most Chinese waitstaff--deadpan as heck--especially if they're busy. Surprised they are able to cram so many tables and people in such as confined space and not be called out by the FDNY for being a fire hazard, but maybe the firemen eat here too and they don't want to lose this precious gem of Chinese food. I went to there because it's four-star on Yelp. I am native Chinese, but the food is NOT good to me at all. We order a soup, a plate of River Snails(田螺), a shrimp and a tofu. The soup is simple and okay. The shrimp is NOT FRESH. It's claimed to be a seafood restuarant! And the size of river snail is so small that only half of what you have on Chinese street with 10 RMB. I haven't been here for a few years and since I was around the neighborhood, I decided to drop in for dinner with the fam. And boy do I regret it. The shrimp with cashew was dry and the chicken was super salty. The veggies was bitter to the taste. This place has pretty good authentic Chinese food. I think it's as close as it gets to Chinatown. The restaurant reminds of a restaurant in Chinatown called Sun Lok Kee on Mott St. Nevertheless, the place has great food and descent service. The ambiance of the restaurant is not all that, but the food makes up for it. Also parking can be a pain; again it's worth a try. Great Cantonese food here! I highly recommend coming here either for early lunch, dinner, and late night take out. Do not come here between lunch and dinner (4pm to 7pm?) The entire staff is straight chillin during that time. The waiters and chefs just don't care during these hours. Food - Delicious! I came here several times for dinner and walked out very satisfied. The shrimp with pecan and mayo sauce is awesome here! I don't remember the name of the dishes here because I always let my friends or family order here. My only request is that shrimp dish! Drinks - Tea, soda, water. I'd stick with tea or soda here. I'll tell ya why soon. Service/Ambiance - If you come here on the right time, the service here is fine. But if you come here during the hours I mentioned before, service is gonna suck ass. This restaurant isn't fancy or pretty at all. It looks cheap and very ugly. The cups sometimes don't look very clean which is the main reason why I refuse to drink sink water here lol. We were loyal customers and always spent quite a bit here (we always came with a large family). But did they care? No. Because of their soaring popularity, they had the guts to tell us to die and that they don't want our patronage after we said something about their lobster not being cleaned well. But after 10 years of not going, I miss the place and decided to return because the food is that good. The thing about this place is that the cooking has a lot of "wok hay". Cantonese people will know exactly what I mean. It's that distinctive taste you get when the chef throws in the aromatics and oil when the wok is crying a million degrees. The flavors of the garlic, oil, soy sauce, and green onions get extracted molecule by molecule so that you taste this awesome flavor. I can't really explain it, but this is the only restaurant that has this distinctive flavor in every dish. Other restaurants don't have much of it. One of the best dishes that you can get where you can experience this taste is the clam dish with the black bean sauce. The clams are this long type, and it's got peppers, so the dish is quite spicy. If cooked incorrectly, it can be quite fishy, but this place serves it great. Even the kids loved it. The last time I went, which was just this Tuesday night, we had the duck feet with the black bean sauce (same flavor as the clams, but just feet, with the whole thing edible, even the "bones"), sauteed sliced conch with veggies (very good and a must have at many Cantonese restaurants), flounder (tips were fried, but fillets sauteed). I didn't care for this dish. Not much flavor but you can eat the whole fish since the tips (tails, fins and such were fried to a crisp). It's like the ep. from the Simpsons: Homer fried a boot and ate it. We also ordered this beef dish with sour/pickled veggies. Not that great because Chinese restaurants tend to put a lot of tenderizer on the beef. Never order anything beef related at Chinese restaurants, trust me! The food here is so good and cheap that my uncle and aunt secretly come back here, even though we all vowed that night that we would never return because of that scuffle 10 years ago. But we all broke that pact because we just couldn't resist. By the way, that one waiter who dissed us still serves (despite rumors that he died of cancer).
